Russia Responds To European Army Proposal: Rattles "Nuclear" Sabre
Having specifically aimed his call for a unified European Army at "reacting credibly to show Russia that Europe is serious about defending its values," it is no surprise that Russia has responded to Jean-Claude Juncker's statements. As TASS reports, first deputy chairman of the United Russia faction in the State Duma, Frants Klintsevich, told the media on Sunday that "in the nuclear age extra armies do not provide any additional security. But they surely can play a provocative role," adding it was regrettable that such ideas had already met with some support.

The president of the European Commission has called for the creation of an EU army in order to show Russia “that we are serious about defending European values”.
In an interview with German newspaper Die Welt, Jean-Claude Juncker, who leads the EU’s executive arm, said an EU army would let the continent “react credibly to threats to peace in a member state or a neighbour of the EU”.

Mr Juncker said an EU army would “help us to develop a common foreign and security policy, and to fulfil Europe’s responsibilities in the world”. Nato was not a sufficient protection for the EU as not all EU members are part of the alliance, according to Mr Juncker.

“I support Juncker in building an EU army, if it means the termination of all EU member states’ armies and is controlled by the European Parliament,” tweeted Jan Philipp Albrecht, a German Green MEP.
Furthermore, German Defense Minister von der Leyen went so far as to note, "I think what is most important, it shows up in Europe, 70 years after the Second World War - and 70 years ago we were mortal enemies - that today the peace in Europe, in the European Union stands on firm footing, and we Step by step, more and more firmly establish our alliances, especially in the security policy. This interweaving of armies with a view to provide also have a European army one day, in my opinion, is the future."

You remember that Soviet troops really did occupy Austria after the war, right? They left in 1955 after a treaty with the other Allies guaranteed Austrian neutrality.
Stalin didn't actually have his heart set on occupying Germany or Austria forever, and Germany could (for better or worse) have been re-unified a lot sooner if the Allies had agreed to his proposals for a neutral, demilitarized Germany.
As it was, DC wanted West Germany for a military base as close to Russia's doorstep as possible, during that brief window of time when nuclear regime change in Soviet Russia would just about doable at acceptable cost (to Wall Streeters sitting in New York out of range of that generation of Soviet bombers, anyway).

Yawn. All the relevant members of the EU are already members of NATO. There is no need for another layer. The only EU member bordering Russia that is not in NATO is Finland, and defending it in a major conflict situation would be almost impossible anyway. They will tie Russian forces in a conflict situation even as a militarily neutral nation - not having to waste too much resources on it, or the credibility of NATO, is a positive for the organization.

In my envirinment (Austria, Cz, H, Sk, Pl) 90% people do not trust a single world from government or emdia, what so ever they tell us. unfortunatelly 80% are totally passive, as they do not starve, have a place to sleep and do not care about politics at all.

This should be seen as a call to abandon NATO and have a truly European defense structure. SACEUR's statements regarding Russia made a lot of people in Europe nervous and question America's intentions in Europe. Now, having an army requires the possession of the latest weapons including nuclear weapons. But that only will not keep Europe safe since Russia has thousands of them. What is required is an interception system that functions as an umbrella. But once you do that the other side will get very nervous.

Actually I was cautiously optimistic over JCJs suggestion. I saw it as the creation of a European army to replace NATO, and as we all know, NATO is in the business of warmongering. Anything which replaces NATO is to be preferred. Of course, I could just be naive...
