US Sends Over 100 US Tanks, Armor To Latvia As Nuland "Confirms" Russia Delivering Weapons
No lesser trustworthy character than Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland explained this morning that the US can "confirm" new Russian weapons delivery to Ukraine and that they "can tell" when Russia sends in new weapons (though offering no explanation of this statement). This comment to the Senate Committee comes a day after the US delivered 'lethal aid' to Latvia - 120 armored units (including tanks) - with US Army General John O’Conner who witnessed the tanks arriving on Latvian soil said, "Freedom must be fought for, freedom must be defended." And finally, one more shot in the eye of the germans, deputy under-secretary of Defense Brian McKeon said the US is "actively considering more weapons for Ukraine," seemingly implying they alreadt sent some?

And this comes a day after the US delivered lethal aid to Latvia...
Latvia has confirmed more than 120 armored units, including tanks, have been delivered by the US. According to the Latvian Ministry of Defense, these include M1A2 Abrams tanks and M2A3 Bradley armored vehicles.
The move to deploy yet more tanks and armored vehicles was welcomed by Latvian Minister of Defense Raymond Vejonis."The presence of our allies (US and NATO) in Latvia is a confirmation of solidarity and security in the region," Vejonis said in a statement on Twitter.
The tanks were delivered to Latvia via Riga Freeport after being offloaded from the carrier ship Liberty Promise on Monday. US Army General John O’Conner who witnessed the tanks arriving on Latvian soil said, “Freedom must be fought for, freedom must be defended," as reported by the US Embassy Riga Twitter feed.

He also added their delivery would "demonstrate resolve to President Putin and Russia that collectively we can come together," while General O’Connor also mentioned, they would stay "for as long as required to deter Russian aggression,” as reported by AFP.

I don't really understand the angst / surprise / vitriol that we are sending armor to a NATO ally. If the alliance is tested there and our word as a participant in the defense of the alliance is shown to be weak or false then there are serious global consequenses. If the NATO alliance is just a bunch of weakly defended nations that are suddenly afraid they will dramatically shift spending priorities for defense. The European utopia of socialized everything falls apart as they can't afford all that stuff. Then our trade with them dumps our economy down, we get even more into debt and suddenly we can't afford war. Everyone fighting for their own prioities and pecking order would be the WWIII. There is also the knock-on effects if Japan believes our nuclear deterent umbrella is not really there. Them pursing their own nukes as deterrent to China will just make the Pacific the definition of $&!*storm.
Basically I don't want war, we have had enough of it. I am tired of playing cop, but hegemony, as much as people hate imperialism / colonialism / sticking our nose in, promotes stability. I hate the money masters that use credit to control and ruin societies over decades of playing God, but our promise of military support keeps a lot of smaller states peacefully fulfilling their social and economic goals (using that easy credit unfortunately for some).

As a latvian, I can say this is not good. It's enough of a deal to be provocative, but not enough to be a deterrent. The ideal scene involves *no* militaries or imperial interests, but sadly we've been wedged in the middle for hundreds of years. It was mostly a back and forth between German and Russian interests, but now Americans. I had heard a recent musing that the US was going to slowly go away from western european bases and move things further east. It appears they really are going to go ahead with that. I will be curious to see if the swedish banking interests, which own some 90% of baltic-based banks, will be muscled out in favor of american ones (not that I want to eat from that shit pot either). To me, the real solution is real free trade--not these f***** EU rules, and a recognition of Russia as a member of Europe, as a minimum.

Wasn't much of a war effort for Germany to roll over the West straight to the Atlantic. Fortifying and holding the Atlantic coastline for so many years was incredible when you think of it. Russia was a much more formidable enemy in the East. Without help from the Americans though, the Germans would have taken Moscow. Then the Americans launched their allied attack on Germany from the West after securing the flow of spice from the Arabs and the Med.

Contrary to the "conquering hero" hollywood script, humanity is actually the cornered beast. We did make some effort while we were still free to develop better death controls (one-child policy, birth control technology) but those failed to keep pace with the problem. We have backed ourselves into a corner. We are incapable of enforcing a zero-child policy now, and that would be a minimum requirement at this 3 minute to midnight moment. That would have to be a universal policy enforced by militarism, employing the NSA, the "internet of things", and "community watch". The disruption in the economy from the zero-child policy would have to be addressed before stepping away from the strict policy. The first step could be a global lottery for the right to have a child.
Of course this will not happen.
