Worse Than The Cold War: 81% Of Russians Now View The US Negatively

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder via The End Of The American Dream blog,

Russians view the United States much more unfavorably today than they did during the end of the Cold War era.  As you will read about below, an astounding 81 percent of all Russians now view the United States negatively, and only 13 percent have a positive opinion of this country.  In all of the years when Russians have been surveyed on their attitudes toward the U.S., they have never been this negative.  But of course Americans generally do not view the Russian people unfavorably.

So why is this happening?  Well, it all comes down to the actions of the Obama administration.  The Russian people are convinced that U.S. organizations organized, funded and armed the rebels that violently overthrew the democratically-elected Ukrainian government.  And once it was overthrown, the Obama administration immediately recognized the rebels as the legitimate government of Ukraine.  And now most Russians are convinced that the U.S. government is trying to promote a similar revolution inside Russia.  In recent years, the Russian people have become increasingly nationalistic, and at this point they view U.S. meddling in their affairs as a direct threat to their way of life.  Even while most Americans are extremely apathetic about what is going on over in Russia, an increasingly large chunk of the Russian population is angry enough to go to war.

Anti-American sentiment inside Russia has grown so strong that even the mainstream media is starting to report on it.  For example, the following quote comes from a recent article in the Washington Post

Thought the Soviet Union was anti-American? Try today’s Russia.

After a year in which furious rhetoric has been pumped across Russian airwaves, anger toward the United States is at its worst since opinion polls began tracking it. From ordinary street vendors all the way up to the Kremlin, a wave of anti-U.S. bile has swept the country, surpassing any time since the Stalin era, observers say.

For the recent survey that I mentioned above, Russians were asked this question: “What is your general attitude toward the United States?”

81 percent of Russians responded negatively, and only 13 percent had a positive response.

That is the most negative that Russians have been toward the U.S. since polling began back in 1988.

And this could potentially be just the beginning.

For a moment, I want you to imagine a scenario.  I want you to imagine how the U.S. government and the U.S. population would respond if the Russians organized, funded and armed rebels that overthrew the Canadian government.  And then imagine how the U.S. government and the U.S. population would respond if the Russians started shipping heavy military vehicles and sophisticated military equipment to those rebels after they had established a new pro-Russian government.

I can just see it now – people everywhere would be screaming “Red Dawn” and warning of imminent war with Russia.

Well, the truth is that Ukraine is Russia’s most important neighbor, and the two nations have ties that go back for thousands of years.

When we meddled in Ukraine, we poked Russia right in the eye, and now we have a very angry Russian bear to deal with.

For much more on how angry Russians are at this moment, please see my previous article entitled “This Is How Much Russians Hate America“.

And if Barack Obama decides to start sending heavy military vehicles and equipment to the government in Kiev, that is going to escalate things to a completely new level.

If you do not think that could happen, you should consider what the Washington Post is reporting

President Obama said Monday that he is considering providing Ukraine with lethal weapons to defend the country against Russian aggression if diplomatic options fail.

Of course it is not just Obama that is thinking this way.  In fact, there is lots of pressure on Obama from both sides of the aisle to arm the Ukrainians…

The pressure on Obama from the Republicans, but also from his own political camp, is intense. Should the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine not hold, it will likely be difficult to continue refusing Kiev’s requests for shipments of so-called “defensive weapons.” And that would represent a dramatic escalation of the crisis. Moscow has already begun issuing threats in anticipation of such deliveries. “Any weapons deliveries to Kiev will escalate the tensions and would unhinge European security,” Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of Russia’s national security council, told the Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda on Wednesday.

In the end, I believe that this is going to happen.  And when it does, all hell is likely to break loose.

If you believe that cooler heads will somehow prevail, you should consider what is already happening.  At this point, U.S. tanks and military vehicles have already rolled into Latvia

Latvia has confirmed more than 120 armored units, including tanks, have been delivered by the US. According to the Latvian Ministry of Defense, these include M1A2 Abrams tanks and M2A3 Bradley armored vehicles.

The move to deploy yet more tanks and armored vehicles was welcomed by Latvian Minister of Defense Raymond Vejonis.“The presence of our allies (US and NATO) in Latvia is a confirmation of solidarity and security in the region,” Vejonis said in a statement on Twitter.

How would we feel if Russian tanks were rolling into northern Mexico?

And many in Europe seem to be quite hawkish these days as well.  For instance, the president of the European commission says that an EU army is needed to deal with the potential Russian threat

The European Union needs its own army to help address the problem that it is not “taken entirely seriously” as an international force, the president of the European commission has said.

Jean-Claude Juncker said such a move would help the EU to persuade Russia that it was serious about defending its values in the face of the threat posed by Moscow.

All of this posturing could ultimately lead to something far worse than the Cold War.

If we keep pushing Russia, we could someday end up with a real war on our hands.

But don’t just take my word for it.  Just consider the following excerpt from a recent article by Stephen Lendman

Ukraine is ground zero. Ongoing conflict risks the unthinkable – direct US confrontation with Russia risking nuclear war.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev warned Ukraine’s conflict could “unavoidably lead to a nuclear war..”

Nuclear arms expert Steven Starr warned about things headed recklessly toward this possibility.

Nuclear expert Helen Caldicott believes US/Russian confrontation risks nuclear war. Things today are more dangerous than any previous time in the post-WW II period.

Former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark said “(n)othing is more dangerous than the aggressive US/NATO troop movements right on the borders of Russia.”

To most Americans, the threat of nuclear war with Russia is a joke.  Most people in this country believe that it could never possibly happen.

But an increasing number of experts are starting to wake up and realize that if we stay on this road that it could be a very real possibility.  For example, author Daniel Estulin had some very interesting things to say during one recent interview…

The United States and its European allies are seeking to overthrow the Russian government by escalating the confrontation with Moscow up to the “threshold of a thermonuclear war,” an author in Madrid says.

US President Barack Obama is orchestrating a regime change to topple Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Daniel Estulin, author of The True Story of the Bilderberg Group.

The US and Britain have “reactivated a policy of threatening tactical nuclear warfare against Russia and China to force them to submit to the crumbling transatlantic financial empire,” Estulin said during a phone interview with Press TV on Wednesday.

“That submission will not happen, however, as the Russian leadership has repeatedly made clear,” he added.

For much more on a potential war with Russia, please see my previous article entitled “While Obama Guts The U.S. Military, Russia Prepares For War“.

But before a shooting war happens, Russia will attempt to use other means at their disposal to hurt us if we start shipping military equipment to the government in Ukraine.

So let us hope that does not happen.

If the Obama administration backs off, things may have a chance to cool down.

However, if the Obama administration publicly announces that we will be arming the new Ukrainian government, that will be an absolutely critical moment for U.S.-Russian relations.  Once that happens, there will be no turning back.

When it comes to Russia, the Obama administration has been talking about “pressing the reset button.” It’s meant to symbolize a possible new start in U.S./Russian relations, which “crashed” after Russia invaded Georgia last August.

So when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton greeted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva Friday before sitting down to their working dinner, she was all smiles when she presented him a small green box with a ribbon.

Lavrov opened it and, inside, there was a red button with the Russian word “peregruzka” printed on it.

"I would like to present you with a little gift that represents what President Obama and Vice President Biden and I have been saying and that is: 'We want to reset our relationship, and so we will do it together.' ...

"We worked hard to get the right Russian word. Do you think we got it?" she asked Lavrov, laughing.

“You got it wrong," said Lavrov, as both diplomats laughed.

“It should be “perezagruzka” [the Russian word for reset]," said Lavrov."This says ‘peregruzka,’ which means ‘overcharged.’”

Vladimir Putin himself was behind the rebirth of the Russian Christian Orthodox Church. In fact, if you go to many east coast towns in the US you will find Russian Orthodox Churches that were set up by the Russians before the 1917 revolution. Christianity is more popular and more defended in Russia today then you apparently know. Buy a plane ticket. Get out more.

You actually have a point there. In the NuSpeak of global propaganda, "friend" and "ally" mean "people we will happily fuck over" and "enemy" means "people we will support, but pretend to hate".

Ukraine is the USA's "friend", and they robbed them blind, stole all their gold, fucked up their infrastructure, bankrupted them and sold them off piecemeal to their oligarchs.

ISIS is the USA's "existential enemy", and they've been air dropping them food, weapons, ammunition, and B52 target coordinators.

So, in light of that context, just what the hell is going on with Russia? What did Obama mean when he told Medvedev to "wait until after the election" when he'd "have more wiggle room"?

Probably 5,000 in downtown dallas, 1000 in Crawford when Tony Blair visited Bush, and several other smaller gatherings, including camp Casey with Cindy Sheehan in Crawford.  There is a nucleus of good people who understand what is going on  -but not nearly enough to be effective and make real change. It could be that most people do not even know WHO thier congress person is, and when they get the voting booth, and see the choices, paper or plastic, they may tend to choose the one that might sound familiar due to advertisments, etc.

Also, there really is no telling how accurate voting actually is thanks to Diebold anyway.

I beg to differ. It's not about imbeciles. The American Voter is usually very approving of his district's congressman

the whole knot here is that the American Voter has only two choices for his district, and one of them "takes it all". it's all about an antiquated voting system

face it, the American Consumer would revolt if he'd have only two choices of brands in the supermarket. but when it comes to political parties... it's fine

USSR had no right to give it to Ukraine in the first place unless it reflected the Will of the People.   The right to self-determination  is inalienable. Czechoslovakia splitting up didn't threaten the existence of life on earth. Yugoslavia broke up, the Soviet Union broke up. Kosovo was ripped out of Serbia by force. What's this nonsense about borders can't change. They do change. Mainly to correct mistakes by arrogant politicians. Ukraine should split along the Dnieper River. It's really two countries that are only together by odd circumstances.  Why are we defending the borders that were forced by a bloody dictator?

Asshat, actually Newfoundland was first settled by French Fisherm who made babies with the local natives. Then the Brits arrived, the party ended, and Newfoundland became a Colony of Britian. Then it became a dominion of GB. Then, this little cocksucker Canadian politician named Joey Smallwood convinced everyone to turn in their Union Jacks for the Mapleleaf and he promised everyone they would be in the land of Milk and Honey. Needless to say a lot of poverty and high taxes and fuck all followed for about 50 years after that. Thank Christ for the offshore oil. Fast forward today and most Newfoundlanders consider themselves Newfoundlanders first, then (depending on their ancestors) either French Leaning or British Leaning and then Canadian.

I swear, some of you guys need to get out of your parent's basement more often and see the world before Obama the Antichrist irradiates it.

We have agreement on hot mormon chicks.

As to the NSA and your huge salary...it's the morality and Constitutionalism of your operations.  Your agency is so far out of bounds that it is rogue and must be destroyed by any means necessary...as is our current, war criminal, government that you are a part of.

As you exit work, note the streetlights along the road, and imagine which one will hold your twitching body.  Because you won't get a clean drop...you're going to be hoisted and tied.  It will be slow and painful.  I'd volunteer to help hold the rope, but I don't live nearby.

But I've got a shitload of very awake mormon relatives that DO live nearby...

Russians move anywhere they want, however only about 10,000 people move to the US in 2010-2013 mostly to study and work for the large corporations. Russians don't even come to the US as tourists. Russian speaking people in the Us are mostly Jews, Ukrainians, and others from the former soviet republics. I bet you won't meet an actual ethnic Russian in Fl, or NY. "It is now official Russian policy that they will be forced to fight a war by the west sometime in the coming decade. They hope for 10 years, but fear Washington is driving for war this summer."

There will be no war. If there could be, it would be launched by now, as the crumbling Empire is desperate. America is only trying to get other countries to wage proxy wars with Russia, but it never will directly confront her. Why? Simple. The Russians have nukes that could bomb America back to the stone age. That's a risk no American, even the looniest, will take. In all their history, the USA have never been known to confront an enemy that could defend itself. They won't start now. Too chancy.

So, expect more "regime change", "color revolutions", proxy wars, murderous merc armies, etc, but no direct confrontation with Russia. Nor China.

And Putin is not going to commit Russian military formations to a protracted war.  He is a chess master.  He knows how to win a war.  You either don't fight at all, or you win in one battle that you stacked.  Whatever team Obama thinks is going to happen, sending formations piecemeal into the Ukraine battle, is not not going to happen.  If the war must happen, the war will be here.  It will end in one day.  It will be decisive.

"Russians view the United States much more unfavorably today... (and) it all comes down to the actions of the Obama administration." --Michael Snyder

Current Russian disapproval of the US is just a snapshot assessment of a much lengthier decline, and does not "all" come down to the latest president's reckless actions -- as the dubious graph above shows. Yeah, Obama's effed up the mess famously for sure, but he's just carrying out imperial orders no differently than Bush Jr, Clinton, or any of the rest. It's the cumulative effect of decades of frictive policymaking toward Russia -- administration after administration -- that has soured Russian attitudes toward America and its puppets.

Clearly, Russians weren't too bullish on America after Bush Jr pushed forward with the NATO missile "shield", negotiating deployment deals with Poland and the Czech Republic. Neither did they much like it when the Bush Administration went full-on in backing its Georgian puppet Saakashvili -- a man Russians had come to know as a ruthless dictator who committed atrocities in South Ossetia -- during the Russia-Georgia crisis... all while continuing American war crimes and hypocrisies in Iraq. But Snyder's minor acknowledgement of Republican complicity seems begrudging.

One could go on and on, decade by decade, describing the steady crescendo of western incursions on Russian sovereignty; to say that "all" of today's Russian resentment of the US is on Obama is to be lazy, incorrect, and a total conservative homer. That's right: Michael Snyder is a bible-banging fundamentalist Jesus-worshiper, so when it really comes down to it, the Republicans are under far less scrutiny over at the Economic Collapse blog. ZH sure seems to love the guy.

No.  It is 100% this US administration that is the problem.  The Russians think they can be civilized and outwait this moron Obama for another 2 years to make friends again.  So they are not antagonizing.  But if ethnic Russians start dying from NATO weapons, all bets are off.  That will not be allowed to happen.  Ukraine is in Russia's sphere of influence, whether Obama realizes that or not.  What goes on in Ukraine is Russia's responsibility.  It is full of Russians.  It is has been Russian aligned territory for 100's of years.  What Obama is doing there is unbelievable ignorance.

The US will eventually put heavy weapons into the Ukraine on the basis that it is  a long way from the US and any fallout will be restricted to the Ukraine and Europe leaving not only the US untouched but turbo charging the US economy.

Russia will as a result of US/ NATO  intervention in the Ukraine mobilize conventional forces, ultimately if this is unsuccessful Russia will resort to Battlefield nukes rather than surrender as surrender in the Ukraine would be seen as the end of Russia.

Hopefully at this point the insanity will end, otherwise nukes on the way to Washington will be next, Russia will never surrender when it see's itself as fighting for its very survival, US Politicians should study the history of Russia, this is not Iraq or Syria you are dealing with here.

Well, of course. These days they can find out for themselves that:

a) western banksters really did engineer the Soviet famine, hush it up until Stalin was no longer a useful pawn, then pin it on alleged Russian intolerance of Ukrainians and not their own sadistic social engineering experiment

b) bankroll Hitler's war machine, which came within a hair's breadth of exterminating Europe's Slavs as well as its Jews

c) and even now are plotting to conquer Russia, steal its natural resources and leave not only Russians but all mankind so destitute and so hungry they go back to killing their own children for meat, so a few thousand already unimaginably wealthy people can live like demigods above any human law---amusing themselves like Beria in the old days, no doubt, picking up pretty children of both sexes to rape, torture and murder just because they can.

Russians think the US and EU are abominations ruled by monsters? So would Americans and Europeans, if their media printed news and not disinfo and recycled Wall Street press releases. Because it's the truth.

Just because the folks, who have achieved the most success and gained the greatest power in America, would not risk for a moment their own blood, their own lives, or their own wealth in war, they cannot imagine that their counterparts in Russia would either.

This is a terrible miscalculation. Unless this is corrected, a war will come.

At some point in time, with as little warning as possible, the Russians will launch a series of attacks against the United States. I am sure that Russian "thinktanks" -or what passes for them- are evaluating comparable strengths and weaknesses, and are looking for a shift in military dispositions that would be most favorable to the Russians. I imagine that they would try to strike a crippling series of blows against America's conventional forces  without resorting to nuclear weapons; and leave the United States with the dilemma of accepting strategic defeat or inititiating nuclear war. Europe will be the prize, which will fall into the arms of whichever side prevails.

Between 2020 and 2028, the United States navy and air force will be at their smallest since the beginning of World War II. The army is already there. The technocrats believe that a superiority in drones and naval airpower will be able to offset the inferior numbers of other military assets relative to the Russians. To make matters worse, the pseudo-tacticians and armchair commandos in Washington DC are ingesting all the "BS", that the kind of forces which prevail in big battles, will be hopelessly out-gunned and and out-maneuvered by "smart" bombs and SWAT teams in what is called "4-G warfare".

There is a false hope in the American "thinktanks" that lower oil prices and economic sanctions will weaken Russia politically and militarily. They are smug in their conviction that "soft power" will triumph over military hardware. That's because it appeared to have worked against the Soviet Union in the Reagan-Bush era. Somehow, I don't think that this strategy will this time. The Russians have the benefit of that experience, and are reacting differently.

I wish that America would give up on the "New World Order" scheme. I wish that it would recognize that we have peers among the community of nations; and that these peers have their own spheres of influence and vital interests, which we should respect.

Every morning I wake,,, I thank Russia for being patient. I remember some not so patient Russian leaders in the past that would not have taken near the crap the usa has thrown at them lately. We'd all be incinerated by now.

Yes Russia has done some really bad things but then so have others. The American Indians, Germany and Hitler, France and Napoleon, England and the colonies, the Turks,,,, you name it, somewhere something happened and things went bad.

I believe Russia really wanted/wants to be accepted as an equal partner but some just won't let her past go.

I'll tell you,,, those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Anyhow, from this American... Thanks Russia.

Most of the world sees the US populace as ignorant, selfish and arrogant creatures incapable of thinking without the guidance of their media. Russians survived the first wave of western “liberation” during Elsin’s era and lost most of their wealth and dignity to some obnoxious critters-blood-suckers who’re hiding now in the cracks of falling empire. This shit will not be experimented with ever again.

Maybe it's time for Russia to put some missiles on Cuba so the US feels what it's like because they still don't seem to understand it.

Russians believe what they are told to believe. BTW as a recent (2011) poll showed about 33% of Russians believe the Sun rotates around Earth. The poll was conducted by the major state-owned respected institute (if you can read in Russian - http://wciom.ru/index.php?id=268&uid=111345).
