Firstly, Farage is right...Europe did poke the Russian bear.
Secondly, with that said, the Brits say this because Europe as a rising sovereign power presages a relative decline in the influence and power of the Anglosphere. Growing EU power means lessening UK power.
Thirdly, regardless of who provoked whom...Europe is going to get access to energy diversification one way or another. They were not the first to use military power in energy geopolitics...and that is what all this is about, not Ukraine. Ukraine is only the latest battlefield.
The fact is that were it not for Russian diplomatic and military intervention, there would today be pipelines to the Gulf and to West Africa leading all the way to Germany.
Russia has a lot to gain if it can keep alternate European energy suppliers contained. And what does it have to lose if it fails? Only two things: 1) Good will 2) The power to avoid price competition in Europe.

The Russian government only cares about #2. For them this is entirely about protecting Gazprom and Rosneft from price competition.

We can set up a betting pool on who will destroy the pipelines. We can have a betting pool on who will take the blame for it (likely the US...whether it did it or not). But the longer this goes on the more likely the destruction of Europe's pipelines becomes.

In case you haven't heard yet, Russia is building a new pipeline into the Black Sea to replace the now defunct South Stream. When that one is ready (in about 2 years time) ALL Russian pipelines going through Ukraine will be shut down for good. By the way, the North Stream it's been ready and going full capacity for quite a few years now (which is why Germany is not too worried about their gas...)
