Which States Have The Most Student Debt

Tyler Durden's picture

Just under two years ago, we presented a full breakdown of the student loan bubble, broken down by state, in which among other things, we found that Washington D.C. stuck out like a sore thumb as the "students" residing in it had on average just under $40,000 in student loans.

Yesterday, as part of Obama's most reent push to change the bankruptcy law and promote legislation that facilitates the reduction or outright forgiveness of student debt, the White House provided a full state-by-state breakdown of where the 43.2 million borrowers on the hook for some $1.135 trillion in student loans.

But before we present the results, it will likely come as no surprise to anyone that once again, it is the students in the nation's capital, the District of Columbia, where the debt burden is once again heaviest: As Bloomberg recaps, "at an average of $40,855 per borrower, the student loans of debtors in the nation's capital are 140 percent higher than the national average of $28,400, and they exceed by more than $10,000 what borrowers owe in Georgia, the state with the second-highest student debt level."

Here is state breakdown, ranked by highest to lowest average per student debt. One wonders how much clearer the unprecedented student debt fraud taking place in D.C. has to be before someone actually investigates.

Some more details on the 10 most troubled states, courtesy of Bloomberg:

Washington, D.C.

  • Average student debt load per person: $40,855
  • Number of borrowers: 140,000
  • Student loan default rate: 11.4 percent
  • Median household income: $61,365

Georgia

  • Average student debt load per person: $30,443
  • Number of borrowers: 1,454,000
  • Student loan default rate: 14.5 percent
  • Median household income: $47,958

Maryland

  • Average student debt load per person: $30,064
  • Number of borrowers: 829,000
  • Student loan default rate: 11.2 percent
  • Median household income: $69,826

Virginia

  • Average student debt load per person: $28,467
  • Number of borrowers: 1,058,000
  • Student loan default rate: 10.0 percent
  • Median household income: $66,015

South Carolina

  • Average student debt load per person: $28,271
  • Number of borrowers: 649,000
  • Student loan default rate: 13.7 percent
  • Median household income: $43,437

Florida

  • Average student debt load per person: $27,907
  • Number of borrowers: 2,457,000
  • Student loan default rate: 15.4 percent
  • Median household income: $47,114

Vermont

  • Average student debt load per person: $27,637
  • Number of borrowers: 96,000
  • Student loan default rate: 8.6 percent
  • Median household income: $54,982

Alabama

  • Average student debt load per person: $27,591
  • Number of borrowers: 591,000
  • Student loan default rate: 14.2 percent
  • Median household income: $43,196

Colorado

  • Average student debt load per person: $27,562
  • Number of borrowers: 793,000
  • Student loan default rate: 15.3 percent
  • Median household income: $60,727

New York

  • Average student debt load per person: $27,478
  • Number of borrowers: 2,821,000
  • Student loan default rate: 10.1 percent
  • Median household income: $51,554

That's the breakdown by most debt per student. Additionally, below we show another perhaps just as interesting series, one showing the total number of student borrowers by state. As the chart below shows, we wish student debt collectors the best of luck in the states of California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

I wouldn't be so sure. I'll grant you that many of my generation are retards and numb nuts. However, anyone can be trained to shoot. Anyone in 12 weeks can get up to military fitness. Given a few months of training, and the millennials would be an army. Boomers have the disadvantage of being old.

I'll concede that it would be hard to motivate the millennials to fight. Older
generations have a better grasp of principles and haven't been as badly nuetered by education.

In any event, the whole thought experiment is pointless. Any class war that erupts would almost certainly be orchestrated by TPTB, to make us fight each other instead of fighting them. When the fighting comes, let's try to remember that point.

I hear you, but I am not just talking about the boomers, I'm gen X and we are still pretty young.  Plus one reason why we will lose WW3 badly is because of how pathetic and feminine the young "men" are these days.  I don't think there will be enough time for training these idiots.

Listen asshole, if you think millenials have anything to do with the problems in this country - you are seriously full of shit.  You think it was fun graduating from college in 2008?  Right after the GenXers and Baby Boomer Bankers made a killing off the real-estate bubble?  It was really awesome watching the stock market and real estate markets reinflate without any capital to invest... yay!

You think it's fun having no fucking savings account and no retirement prospects?  Meanwhile all of the Baby Boomers are just hoarding everything with their pensions and social security that millenials will probably never see.

Not all of us millenials are stupid and ignorant.  We are just trying to have some semblance of a "normal" life when "normal" is no longer possible.  Those of us who understand the situation are surrounded by fuckwads.

Sorry for being born, you fucking jerk!  I guess you learned all of that compassion from your fucking Bible!

im the youngest of the "boomers" i guess. born in late 1959. but i certainly remember the day our country was stolen from us november 22 1963. i blame my parents and their generation for not righting that wrong, and then the viet nam war and then the segregation of schools etc. etc.

i just had to deal with it being a kid.  i have seen the corporations take over our country, the socialistic upending of all morals and values etc. etc. in my lifetime.  i have been thought a fool by a great many people for a very long time.  i supported ross perot and i remember how all the media marginilized him with playground rhetoric,  "ha,ha, he has big ears".  and the media and most of the people laughing at admiral james stockdale as his running mate, (ps if you were to know or read any of james stockdales published works he is probably one of the most intelligent human beings to grace this earth).

when senator fritz hollings voted against removing clinton from office i sent him an angry bellicose letter questioning his honor, character, and integrity not only as a senator but as a citadel graduate,  that got me harassed and audited.  so i believe i have done a great deal to try to uphold the idea of our country and constitution.

now i am to the point where i wonder if it was not all an illusion of collective propaganda that i naively fell for.  when i swore an oath to god to protect and defend the constitution against all enemies as an officer,  perhaps i should have shot the guy administering the oath.

i don't have a problem with you younger people.  you were just born deeper down the hole than i was and we are all still in the hole. it will take the blood, sweat, tears hope prayer and about twice as much to give for each of us as we are aware we can provide to take it back, but take it back we must and will, as god as my witness i will never go down gently if i go down i pray and avow it will be standing up and fighting what i know to be wrong, and i hope you melennials and whatever other name for generations there are will be beside me.

I can relate to this. I was born in 1962 and feel estranged from the boomers who by their sheer numbers had the best opportunities and did well having such clout. The country adjusted to the needs of such a large population though I am not saying they did this purposefully. I feel much closer to the gen Xers having had more of a life similar to them.

I actually feel the Millennials have had a very difficult time and all cannot be blamed on them. I have spent a week at a corporate event and am just shocked how aged the population is. Fifteen years ago the mean age appeared to be 40. Now definitely over 60. Boomers are not retiring and youth is waiting on the sidelines when they should be being mentored by these senior people to take over. The brain drain will be fierce and probably unrecoverable.

I guess I view this generational war as just another way to divide and conquer. At some point the aged will depend on youth to survive and the power will pass to them. I will stand by their side as well as long as I can. I know who our real enemy is.

THANK YOU Wendigo.  Millennials are largely clueless, but so are most of their boomer parents, who helped create most of the mess we are in with their shallow, indulgent self-centeredness instead of being morally virtuous like their parents.  Millennials are naive and apathetic and don't really stand a chance in this world unless they wake up.  I myself am part of the ignored GenX group. I am trying to teach my kids (who are young millennials or whatever is after that). Those of us of any age who are awake should NOT make the mistake of fighting a misdirected generational war.  This fight should be against the elite SOBs that are trying to run the world and turn us all into degraded slaves.

You may be forgetting that the boomer war was Viet Nam....a much more democratic event, as the draft was in full force, rotating fresh troops in 12 month combat cycles.  These voluteers are far, far fewer in number, as the same guys get deployed over and over again.  More real experience for the volunteer army, but way more boomers with actual experience.  Plus, as noted, boomers just know a lot more in general about basic stuff.

Let's just hope these battle lines are never drawn.  There won't be many true winners.

I just see these youths on a daily basis with thier collective heads buried in thier phones. I know the majority can not see the forest from the trees.  I am glad there is at least one who gets it.

I am serious about this though, I have a great fear that the youth will vote for my destruction, because I belive in the Bible, and the 2nd amendment and many youth hate me because of it.  I do feel like they will be my destrutor like the Stay Puff man from Ghostbusters. It's a real fear.

just eyeballing the figures it looks to be about 25 billion or so per year in student loan defaults assuming the average default rate is about 13% and the average debt is around 27K per borrower.  now how exactly could they afford to allow these things to go bankrupt?  that would push the number to around 300 billion or so...  and they think we have deflation now!?!?

however, what the "default" refers to in the article, and is by the department of educations definition of default- is being late for a payment by 270 days or more.

That was after they changed the bankruptcy/student loan law. Now that may be after they change the bankruptcy/student loan law.

All of your debt belong to US. Just charge it to the American Credit Card at the Fed. It is only digits and not real money.

Now all of you who get your school loans forgiven go out and borrow to buy, buy, buy in the name of patriotism.

This is American exceptionalism, eh?

I am living next to the largest cohort of financially illiterate people in the entire World. 43 million subprime student loan borrowers with a combined default rate well over 10% of loans on the books. This is remarkable exceptionalism on the part of Americans I must say.

If you do what they have done, then how are you any different from a moral point of view? Unless you figure that the size of any wrong makes "the difference"...it is this type of immorality or :human-relative moralism" that has gotten us to the point we are now.

-When the fixed moral standard was abandoned, around the 1950's in earnest, when have seen the rise of gross sexual immorality, self indulgence and unadulterated debauchery..it is what happens when man defines his morality by using standards associated to man.

I'm not sure what you mean.  I've never borrowed a penny, so obviously there's no way I can default.  So, there is one way I am different.

Here is another way.  I have understood that fiat, fake, fraud, fiction, fantasy, fractional-reserve debt-notes and currency and LOANS are inherently corrupt.  Anyone who lends nothing created out of thin air deserves nothing in return.

You would be correct to respond with a statement something like "but the products productive people create are exchanged for that fiat nothingness created out of nothingness", so defaulting on debt isn't fair.

Well, you would be DAMN TOOTING CORRECT to object on that basis.  But the next question is, who is responsible for creating a system in which VIRTUALLY EVERY SINGLE purchase involves fiat, fake, fraud, fiction, fantasy, fractional-reserve debt-notes and debt-bits?  Who is responsible for dramatically jacking up the price of virtually every product on earth by making astronomical quantities of debt easily available to every man, woman and pet on the planet?

To be sure, the hordes of "regular folks" who borrow, and borrow vastly more than any responsible individual should deserve some blame too.  But they are not the primary culprits, the predators-that-be are.  The predators-DBA-banksters are.  The predators-DBA-government are.  The predators-DBA-centralbank are.  The predators-DBA-hugefinancialcorporations are.

I totally agree with you that most humans [in the west and beyond] are far from honest and ethical today.  Though you go too far and claim certain totally voluntary aspects of human life are "not moral" (presumably based upon some form of authoritarianism you've accepted), your claim is nonetheless valid.

Once a powerful pack of human predators have a certain level of control over "virtually everything", and realize astronomical benefits from their craven, diabolical lack of ethics, people notice.  And they get damn tired of being abused, punished, mistreated and enslaved for being ethical.  And sure enough, eventually they give in and join the party in various ways.  But who is primarily responsible?  Those who become unethical "because everyone else is" and "to compensate themselves a bit for being totally shafted and enslaved"?  Or those who established a fundamentally craven, diabolical, unethical system that rewards the worst human predators in history?

I don't defend any "government", for they are total fictions... just fake names that front for packs of human predators.  But I also totally understand that any of those packs of predators who call themselves "government" has ZERO ethical basis to borrow money and expect their slaves to repay those debts.  NONE.  Neither you or anyone else can justify such systems... systems that dump hundreds of thousands of dollars or euros of debt on newborns the instant the are born.

So yes, the PEOPLE should DEFAULT.  Which simply means, refuse to pay back loans that THEY DID NOT SIGN FOR.  If you believe some people can take out loans and expect others (non-signators) to repay those loans, then YOU are unethical.  Somehow, if you think about these issues seriously, I suspect you'd have to agree that such one-sided imposed "arrangements" are utterly unethical and immoral.

Off topic but relevant,

I own my own business as some of you know, and back in 2008 when I was royally screwed over after the shock of being ruined I found the Internet.  I did a little rudimentary research and called in a few favours, and declared from that point forward, after researching 'Common Law', that Inthemix96 has withdrew his fucking 'Consent', period.  No fucking more.

Just this past week makes me laugh.  The Austrian bank that misplaced some 8000 million euros?  And no fucker gets their hands burnt?  No one get called called in for questioning?  No one faces criminal proceedings?  Scott fucking free after either stealing or losing 8000 million euros?  As you do eh?

Well one of the fucking companies I have a real problem with is my local water board sold to the fucking French.  For five years these cunts have chased me for £33 a month?  After allowing the likes of the above by our collective corrupt child molesting cunts that think they were born to rule?  Inthemix96 has not, and will not pay to keep this shit show alive.

Do the same my friends, cause serious small time problems and clog the machine up, by withdrawing the only thing they ever needed.

Your 'Consent'.  Its the 800 year anniversary of this document, use it, and on that note, fuck off northumbrian water you bunch of cunts, I have no intention of paying for something that falls from the fucking sky you fucking thieves.

Fuck it. JUBILEE! Screw all those dummies busting their ass to pay off this damn PRIVATE debt - what a handout to the TBTF banks - we won't allow BK on this shit. So screw the banks, too. I'm glad to see the problem is so acute in DC - just a chance it will get attention.

My solution? Allow bankruptcy on this shit. Those that can pay it off, will. Those that can't, will BK. The TBTF banks will stop handing out this can't fail debt, and college tuition will have to adjust - downward - to reasonable levels, or admissions will drop through a big hole, and a lot of tenured, overpaid ivory-tower assholes will get to retire early. Or, a lot of people won't be going to college, or going to local JCs - the good students will find a way to the 4 year degrees.

Life ain't fair, and a BA ore BS is sure no gaurentee of a job anyhow.

You got a better idea, let's hear it.

Cry me a river.  Adjusting for inflation, I left college with over $31,000 of debt in today's dollars.  I paid off every penny over ten years AT 7% INTEREST.  If these kids can't invest in their own education then what the hell do they think is worth investing in?  Porn?  iPhones?  Rap music?  Geez.  It wasn't easy making those payments every month but I managed to live with a used car and a smaller place to live until I finally started making some real money.  Fuck these kids and their parents too who are wanting me, the taxpayer, to pay for what they should be responsible for.  And to hell with Obama for feeding into this nonsense.

I graduated into the teeth of a bad recession.  So I hauled hay, drove a truck and worked odd jobs until I finally got my first job in finance.  I was pretty disgusted at the politicians, my banker who wanted to get paid every month even when I was broke, the system, etc. but I stuck it out.  I lived with my parents for a year to save extra money but that got old and I moved out with an extra strong feeling of being very grateful to them for trying to help me.  I made it.  I understand bad luck and hard times and if a kid can't pay their bills if he/she is really trying.  But allowing all of them the opportunity to "stick it to the man" by using a BK is teaching them the wrong lessons in life.   Unless they want to become members of the FSA like our Fearless Leader wants them to be.

I have met many American college grads who don't know shit from shinola about anything.

I bet I have out earned many college grads during my working years.  I am retired now,. debt free and big home PAID for.

You managed to live with a used car?? In NYC, many sacrifice and use dare I say -- public transportation - the subway instead of paying on average $2,000 a year just for car insurance alone... A decent used car that won't require thousands in repairs every year is close to $20,000...   You can add a car paying of at least $200 a month, another $200a  month for insurance + gas to what you are paying on student loans

And it's clearly obvious why: the collateral in question is you, the student. Since slavery is still illegal here, you can't net this debt out in bankruptcy. Do you think any lender would ever give a cent to students if you could discharge this debt with no collateral?

But that's old thinking...new thinking has lenders go along with subprime loans all the time.  How is it much different?  Is a car really an asset a creditor cares about it after a few years?  They eventually are worth nothing.

This is about inflating bubbles and kicking cans down the road...and this seems like a very logical plan in that context.  I say he wouldn't have even mentioned it if Wall Street and the corporatist elites weren't behind it already.  What choices they have when you don't have a real economy?  You shuffle debt around and call it assets after a while.
