The West's Plan To Drop Russia From SWIFT Hilariously Backfires

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Simon Black via Sovereign Man blog,

If Vladimir Putin is remotely capable of laughter (the jury is out on that one…) then he’s probably doing so right now.

Russia is once again Arch-Enemy of the United States. It’s like living through a really bad James Bond movie, complete with cartoonish villains.

And for the last several months, the US government has been doing everything it can to torpedo the Russian economy, as well as Vladimir Putin’s standing within his own country.

The economic nuclear option is to kick Russia out of the international banking system. And the US government has been vociferously pushing for this.

Specifically, the US government wants to kick Russia out of SWIFT, short for the Society of Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications.

That’s a mouthful. But SWIFT is an important component in the global banking system because it lays the foundation for banks to communicate and transfer funds with one another.

It’s a network protocol of sorts. Whenever a bank in Pakistan does business with a bank in Portugal, the funds will clear through the SWIFT network.

According to the SWIFT itself, they link over 9,000 financial institutions worldwide in over 200 countries, which transact 15 million times per day.

Bottom line, being part of SWIFT is critical to conducting business with the rest of the world. And if Russia gets kicked out of SWIFT, it would be a disaster.

Now, SWIFT is technically organized as a ‘Cooperative Society’ and governed by a board of directors.

There are 25 available board seats, and each seat is allocated for a three-year term to a specific country.

The United States, Belgium, France, Germany, UK, and Switzerland each hold two seats. A handful of other countries hold just one seat. And of course, most countries don’t hold any seats at all.

Here’s what’s utterly hilarious—

On Monday afternoon, not only did SWIFT NOT kick Russia out… but they announced that they were actually giving a BOARD SEAT to Russia.

This is basically the exact opposite of what the US government was pushing for.

Awkward…

But this story is even bigger than that.

Because at the same time that the US government isn’t getting its way with SWIFT, the Chinese are busy putting together their own version of it called CIPS.

CIPS stands for the China International Payment System; it’s intended to be a direct competitor to SWIFT, and a brand new way for global banks to communicate and transact with one another in a way that does NOT depend on the United States.

We’ll talk about CIPS in more details in a future letter. But in brief, it addresses some serious weaknesses, inefficiencies, and technological challenges of SWIFT.

And it should be ready to go later this year.

Make no mistake, this is the beginning of the end of the US dollar’s global hegemony. It’s time to stop hoping that it won’t happen and time to start preparing for it.

Shame it wont make the slightest difference. The US only has one policy.

Psychopaths will never go quietly into the long goodnight.

I said Russian expulsion from SWIFT would start WWIII for real, now the US will just

fabricate another FF or cassus beli.

Its funny but I see a lot of parables between the whole SWIFT blow-back and the unintended and earth-shattering consequences to Gorbachev's perestroika and glasnost on the Soviet's Party.

I'm not some broken ex-Soviet "expert" but when Gorbachev introduced Pepsi at a Coke only party by his programs it relativized the Russian Communist Party.  It took the mindset from The Party to the Party AND something else.  The take away is that an absolute operational code (yes - we at getting the the way-back Kennan machine here) - be it a political philosophy, religion, or a international Banking Hegemony cannot exist with competition - it can't exist with another competing dogma.

And that is what the Chinese CIPS is.  Its competition to SWIFT, just as the Chinese Development Bank is competition to the IMF and World Bank and all their strings, just as the yuan will be the replacement to the dollar.

The Chinese are still emerging from a 100 great depression - political, economics and spiritual.  While nothing is for certain, the central theme is the MTV generation thought themselves so clever to read the rules of realpolitik upside-down that they finally forced the little kids on the playground to break into their uncle's garage and return to school with a .38 Special to confront their bullies.

Reserve currencies are built and kept by a robust and independent domestic industrial base, gold and and export surpluses.

Not off-shored meta-data, another app and parabolic debt.

There's a Singularity in there somewhere. For Someone, but not You.

"If Vladimir Putin is remotely capable of laughter"

That's from a guy who has obviously not bothered to watch any video of Putin. He'd understand why  Putin is famous for his wry sense of humor, but no. Americans always prefer not to know what they're talking about.

And please, can somebody explain why Americans always write things like "Make no mistake" or "think again"? Is it a Pavlovian lecturing reflex or something?

To conclude, aren't you all good Americans, I mean proper honest people of America, fed up with how flat-footed your government is? I mean, there's only so much embarrassment anyone can take.

I'm not American, and yes, most Americans are indeed clueless morons.  But do you understand what the last paragraph of your message implies?

Why would anyone want a human predator, or pack of human predators to NOT be "flat footed", or NOT be incompetent, or NOT look like idiots?

The implication from your message is... humans SHOULD sanction, defend and respect those human predators who call themselves "government".

Any sane individual in any fictional "nation" should want the human predators in their region of the planet to to appear stupid, ignorant, flat-footed, and be extremely embarrassing.

And so should you.

The problem with that poll is that it considered "dissatisfaction with government" as a separate issue from the others. Yet every other item is a problem because the government decided not to leave well enough alone. America's progressives expanded government drastically and everything they touch becomes a problem. Healthcare? Education? Economy? All made worse by government.

Next time someone comes to your doorstep and says "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you" grab a shovel, did a hole, and bury the bastard.

What is the actual power structure of SWIFT?  How are the real decisions made?  By sitting on the board does one have full access to the secrets and entry to all areas and meetings?

I doubt they will slow down, but any nation looking to avoid being vulnerable will not slow down developing there own international systems.

Real decisions are probably made after the board members get their marching orders from TPTB. Then the NSA monitors what happens within SWIFT to make sure things go as planned/desired.

Sorry, but the USA doesn't win wars. The goal of fighting is to generate profits for the Military industrial complex and enforce $US hegemony.

As long as the fighting is in far away places there is no reason to win these wars. Indeed, there are liabilities that accompany winning.

Also WMD date back to the earliest records, from poisoning wells to buckets of flaming naptha. I will say the USA make the best weapons ever, but the profit motive is still our shame.

The Rothschild KM created a master plan to control all of Judaism and mind-kontrol Judaics. The Rothschild KM has hijacked Judaism, patterned it off of Babylonian Talmudism (Luciferianism or Satanism), and gained control over the banking and Wall Street professions in general, Congress, the major mass media; along with most wealth and economic means of success.

Thus, the Rothschild KM could pass out wealth and success to those Judaics who drank their Kool-aide and use them as cutouts, assets and Sayanims. In this manner, the Rothschilds hijacked Judaism.

Their financing of the Israeli Knesset and construction of it using Freemason occult architecture displayed their commitment to the occult and Babylonian Talmudism and all the evil accompanying it, including child sacrifice to their secret god Baal. They set up a NWO system called World Zionism which taught and inculcated susceptible Judaics with a paranoid group delusion of racial superiority, which assumed that all Gentiles were intent on mass-murdering all Judaics.”

Unbeknownst by many is the possibility that Yahshuhua Ben Joseph, was an Essene as was also his family. Perhaps a reading of this book and further study of the meanings of the words "Jesus" and "Christ" would prove to be of fruitful consideration, rather than the arguing back and forth around what many have no clue about.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Aquarian-Gospel-Jesus-Christ/dp/1604598794

Speaking entirely from experience and not a book or some others words, the truest meaning of the word "Christ" is, awareness. Aware of many things, but not everything. There is too much to handle for the average human mind to grasp in the universal library of Knowledge/Light. Only a being using the full capacity of both halves of the human brain might be considered an applicant for the Godhead. Awareness also allows for openness of mind and heart. Open for any others fine and true experienced add on Light to this information.

Suggestion: ponder the defined meanings of these two words Jesus and Christ and then wonder, who was that unmasked Man?

Bodies Of US Soldiers Killed In Ukraine Float Ashore In Florida

According to this report, the MoD reported last month that the Obama regime had “effectively abandoned” at least 150 US troops embedded with over 5,000 Ukrainian forces in the rebel surrounded town of Debaltseve in eastern Ukraine from which thousands of shell-shocked Ukrainian soldiers managed to escape, and who later described their terrifying retreat from that apocalyptic rail town while being shot at point blank range.

Of the hundreds of bodies found in the aftermath of this horrific battle by rebel forces, this report continues, Russian intelligence sources identified at least 13 of them as being “probable” US Marines based upon “unique body identifiers[i.e. tattoos], military equipment used, and “electronic database identification knowledge” of US Special Forces personnel.

The bodies of these US Marines were then turned over by the rebel forces to Ukrainian authorities (who claimed them as their own) on 18 February after which, Russian intelligence sources in this report state, these remains were repatriated to the United States.

Okay, so these bodies were in the possession of the rebels and then turned over to Ukraine. So when did Russian intelligence get the opportunity to fondle the corpses and paw through the merchandise?

How would Putin's "miners and tractor drivers" in the rebel alliance know any of this stuff?

How many peasant boys can spot US military gear at a glance? And what sort of YouTube video did they use to check out the "electronic database identification knowledge" that permitted them to make a solid ID of a bunch of shot-up bodies?

I mean, there's no connection between the rebels and the Russian Army, right? Putin himself says so.

cont.  " once the taliban had retreated south from kabul, cheney and def. sec. rumsfeld made this clear. america was planning action against '40 to 50 countries'. somalia, allegedly a'haven for the islamis cult al-qaida, joins iraq at the top of a list of potential targets. rumsfeld disclosed that he had asked the pentagon to 'think the unthinkable', after having rejected its post-afghanistan option' as 'not radical enough'. he did not mention that somalia and part of the n.western indian ocean are not a mojor oil and gas reserve, perhaps as large as the caspian sea. there, too, american copanies have staked claims and await the imposition of a pro-western regime. there is no evidence that al-qaida has bases in somalia. the americans are listening to a clan militia called rahanwein supported by and grinding the axe of neighboring ethiopia, which has long sought to keep somalia weak and divided.

september 11 provided bush's washington with a remarkable justification. pakistan's former f.m., niaz naik, was told by american officials in mid-july 2001 that military action against afghanistan would go ahead by the middle of october. s.o.s. powell was then travelling in central asia , already gathering support for an anti-afghanistan war 'coalition'. for washington, the real problem with the taliban was not their human rights violations; these were irrelevant. at first welcomed by washington, the taliban did not have total control of afghanistan; mujaheddin factions held territory to the north. for this reason, to the americans, the regime lacked 'stability', the control required of all clients."

Digging deeper...

>It is the first time Russia has had a seat on the 25-member board of directors of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) since it joined in 1989. Every three years the organization reconfigures the shares among the countries participating. Each country receives a number of shares in proportion to the traffic in the system. The reallocation has led to changes in the structure of the board.

By the end of 2014 the SWIFT traffic growth in Russia allowed us to reach thirteenth place in the world, so Russia has increased its stake to a level that allows it to nominate a candidate to the Board of Directors , the executive director of the Russian National SWIFT Association Roman Chernov told RBC.

On this basis, Russia gained a seat as Hong Kong lost one, Belgium gained an additional seat giving it two and the Netherlands lost a seat giving it one, according to The Banker.

Curiouser and curiouser... (someone apparently forgot to read the fine print)

In August 2014, EU leaders had been trying to use the interbank system as part of their anti-Russian sanctions, pushing SWIFT to disconnect Russia from the system. However, Belgium-based SWIFT didnt bow to pressure as it had no authority to make sanctions decisions.

Ah, now, some real research. +1

Although you're hawking some 3rd party blog, the Banker is an interesting little project by the boys from the FT and the City. (http://ez.no/Customers/Customers-by-Industry/The-Banker-Financial-Times-...)

When they state "this was not a political appointment", well:

HK loses out - slap on the wrist to China (or an acknowledgement that China is going to do their version anyhow)

Belgium gain - EU needs the backup for the upcoming Greek / Spain / Italy stuff (Belgium isn't Belgium, in this context, fyi)

Netherlands - you need someone to lose a point to give to Russia, might as well be one of the largest trading nations in the EU (ports) as a nod to the fact that sanctions have damaged world trade.

My memory tells me that the Russian SWIFT challenge was scheduled to roll out on March 14th. I might be wrong, but I'm glad people are actually working things out behind the scenes (and not sending rediculous letters like the US senate).

Good (wo)man. I suspected as much, so I'll junk myself.

What are your thoughts on the timing of this? Do you think that EU-RU has worked out the SWIFT deal (via CH earlier moves over pegging, this was the obvious signal that CH wasn't taking US directions and was working to preserve the larger trade sheet) and the RU SWIFT succession is off?

My gut thought is yes, but these are crazy-pants times.

" it was a lack of 'sability' that deterred investors from cont. to finance oil and gas pipelines from the caspian sea, whose largely untapped fossil fuels of the caspian basin have become central, if not critical, to american planning. in 1998, cheney, then a consultant on pipelines to several central asian republics, told a conference of oil industry executives, 'i cannot think of a time when we have had a region emerge as suddenly to become as strategically significant as the caspian.'

western interest in the caspian goes back to the era when oil was being discovered, and exploited for the first time. near the end of the 19th century, russia fought to keep john b. rockefeller's standard oil co. out of the caspian. the jounalist john reed, chronicler of the russian revolution, asked an audience at the 1919 people's congress of the east, in baku, the capital of azerbaijan: 'do you know how they pronounce baku in the u.s.? oil!

not only americans and the european imperial powers wanted the caspian oilfields. hitler, in his invasion of russia, and before running short of fuel and being defeated at stalingrad, planned 'to take the saving prize of the caspian resourses, and then to drive south for a greater prize of persia and iraq', as a contemporary journalist, john rees, has pointed out."

for the west, the existance of the soviet union barred the way to oil and gas reserves, whose potential excited constant speculation. the largest inland sea was said, perhaps optimistically, to contain a third of the world's oil and gas reserves. the most extensive fields are in kazakhistan and azerbaijan, the smaller fields in turkmenistan and uzbekistan. following the demise of the ussr, the u.s., russia, china, france, britain, and germany have competed in an 'oil rush' reminiscent of the imperial sramble for africa."

" in the 1990s the u.s. staked its claim with several demonstrations of its 'global reach', such as the well-publicised deployment of 500 paratroopers from the 82nd airborne div. in n. carolina to the desert of kazakhstan. at the time, this was the longest airborne operation in military history and meant to demonstrate, said a pentagon gen., 'there is no nation on the face of the earth that we cannot get to', adding the apparent afterthought that the u.s. was concerned with promoting 'independent, sovereign states that are able to defend themselves'.

president clinton's energy sec. richardson, candidly described the former soviet republics as 'all about america's energy security'. he said, 'we would like to see them reliant on western commercial and political investment in the caspian, and it's very important to us that the pipeline map and the politics come out right.'

the 'pipeline map' is critical, as the oil and gas are worthless without the means to carry them to deep-water ports. there are three routes a pipeline can go: through russia, iran, or afghanistan. for washington, dependence on russia is anathema, and iran is the country america has spent more than 20 yrs. isolating. it was not suprising that, in 1996 when the taliban took power in kabul, they found themselves courted by the american oil lobby with its eye on 'one of the great prizes of the 21st century', as the daily telegraph reported. oil industry insiders say the dream of securing a  pipeline across afghanistan is the main reason why pakistan, is a close ally of america's, has been so supportive of the taliban, and why america has quietly acquiesced in its conquest of afghanistan.'

following 9/11, none was more fervent in calling for the overthrow of the taliban than the wall st. journal. however, 5 yrs. earlier, the authentic voice of american capital had struck an entirely different tone. the taliban, the paper declared, 'are the players most capable of achieving peace in afghanistan at this moment in history'. moreover, their success was crucial to secure afghanistan as 'a prime trans-shipment route for the export of central asia's vast oil, gas and other natural resources'.

"not only were the taliban welcomed to wash., taliban leaders were flown to texas, then governed by gw bush, and entertained in houston by senior executives of the oil co. unocal[ united oil of calif.]. according to george monbiot, 'the company suggested paying these barbarians 15 cents for every 1k cf of gas it pumped through the land they had conquered.' a clinton adm. officail commented that afghanistan would become 'like saudi arabia', an oil co. colony with no democracy and the legal persecution of women. 'we can live with that,' he said.

in 1998, unocal's v.p. for int'l relations, john j. maresaca, told a congressional inquiry that 'by 2010, western companies could increse oil production to 4.5 ml bbls /day, an increase of more than 500% in 15 yrs,. he appealed for 'the development of appropriate investment climates in the region'. by this, he meant that ' construction of pipeline we have proposed across afghanistan could not begin until a recognised gov't is in place that has the confidence of gov'ts,lenders and our company [emphasis added].' he made know mention of the barbaric nature of the rgime, or of the al`qaida terrorists it was said to entertain.

when unocal eventually signed a 'mou' to build the pipeline from turkmenistan to pakistan via afghanistan, it did so on behalf of a consortium of enron, amoco, bp, chevron, exxon, and mobil. the deal makers were cheney, former def. sec. and future v.p., james baker,, former s.o.s., and brent scowcroft, former nat'l security adv. to the president. all had served in the cabinet of bush #41; cheney and baker are steeped in the oil industry; cheney is perhaps the most powerful figure in the w.h as i write; and baker remains highly influential, as of course does bush senior, the 'oil man's president'. peeling the onion of the ' bush oil and gas junta' reveals bush sr. as a paid consultant to the bin laden family through the carlyle group, which owns 64 companies that specialize in oil and gas, aero-space and weapons. the former president has met the family twice.

the pipeline deal feel through when two americans embassies in e. africa were bombed and al-qaida was blamed. the frisson between wash. and the taliban has since been revived with the installation of hamid karzai as president, a former employee of a unocal subsidiary, and appt. as american ambassador to afghanistan of none other than unocal's john j. maresca. post bombing deals have been struck with the caspian's oil republics, all of them sporting appalling human rights records. as the bombing of afghanistan got under way, rumsfeld promised 'ten's of millions of dollars' to tajikistan and uzbekistan, which share 900 miles of border with afghanistan."

Still we search and invent such intelligent weapons
That kill each other like the Gears of War
Hoo-rah!!!

If you ride with thieves, then you die with thieves
Cross my heart and hope that you die, that you die!
When the smoke has cleared, the devil's in the mirror
And you see his warheads paint the sky, now you die!

Smart bombs, precision guided armament
A more sophisticated way to end up dead
Still we search and invent such intelligent weapons
That kill each other like the Gears of War
Hoo-rah!!!

A few months ago, here, he was Amerikan Patriot.

They have numerous accounts and will even have conversations with themselves.

It just serves to deomonstrate the dishonesty and the frantic panic which the Government Agencies are feeling all too well.

At least he is not copying and pasting CNN News articles, filling up pages upon pages with Mass Media Peopaganda here, as he has in the past.

Maybe that is the reason he was invited to leave...

"the russians are not unhappy with the arrangement, believing the republics will move closer to moscow as a counterweight to the americans. vladimir putin's collaboration has won favours in wash., such as the prospect of further strategic arms reductions and the license to proceed with his own 'war on terrorism' in chechnya, where an est. 20k people have been killed. the reason why chechnya is so important to putin is that it is that it is one of the last available routes for caspian oil. as the russians see it, the deal is that they keep chechnya and the u.s. gets unprecedented 'access' to central asia. as americans bombers took off for afghanistan, putin was being enretained by g.w. bush at his texas ranch. 'he is my new close friend,' said putin, waving from a golf cart.

the other principle member of the 'coalition against terrorism', china, was rewarded with firm u.s. support for its entry into the wto. sanctions on the sale of military equipment, imposed following the tinanmen square massacre in 1989, have been eased so that the chinese military can buy parts for american black-hawk helicopters supplied in 1980s. the issue of tibet and multiple chinese human rights abuses are now, like the human rights abuses of the taliban in 1996, irrelevant."

Nemtsov Murder Suspect 'Coerced Into Making Confession' Russian human rights council member says Zaur Dadayev "likely confessed under torture" to killing opposition activist.

11 Mar 2015 23:59 GMT | Politics, Law

A former Chechen police officer who admitted taking part in the murder of Russian opposition activist Boris Nemtsov "likely confessed under torture", a member of the Kremlin's human rights council has said.

Zaur Dadayev allegedly confessed and was charged, but has now insisted to the council's Andrei Babushkin that he is "innocent" and only made the admission under duress.

"There are reasons that lead us to believe Zaur Dadayev confessed under torture," Babushkin told the AFP news agency on Wednesday, after a visit to the suspect's Moscow prison cell.

"We cannot confirm that he was tortured, as we are not investigators, but we did find numerous wounds on his body," said Babushkin, who was swiftly rapped over the knuckles by investigators for meddling in their probe.

The shooting of Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister who became an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin was the highest-profile killing of an opposition leader during Putin's 15 years in charge.

Dadayev, a former deputy commander in a special Chechen police unit, was charged by a Moscow court on Sunday with the murder alongside Anzor Gubashev, who worked for a private security company. The two men and three other suspects were remanded in custody.

Babushkin said Dadayev claimed he had made the confession under duress after being arrested in the North Caucasus region of Ingushetia last week. Dadayev alleged that he spent two days manacled and with a sack over his head.

"They shouted at me all the time, 'You killed Nemtsov, didn't you?' I said, 'no'," Babushkin reported Dadayev as saying.

The suspect said he had eventually admitted to the killing to secure the release of an ex-colleague, Ruslan Yusupov, who was detained alongside him.

Russia's powerful investigative committee condemned Babushkin's statement as breaking the law and said that he and a colleague who visited Dadayev would be questioned over possible "interference in a criminal case".

Nemtsov, 55, was shot four times in the back on February 27 as he walked with his girlfriend along a Moscow bridge just yards from the Kremlin.

The killing sent shockwaves through the opposition, which accuses Putin of steadily suppressing dissent and the Kremlin of being behind the murder of one of its last outspoken critics.

The diminutive Putin (5’5” without lifts) is going down regardless of what Simon Black, the International Man of Mystery, has anything to say about it. Get used to it.

The only “laughing” that Putin is likely to do is of the hysterical variety. Psychopaths are known to do this sort of thing on occasion.
