Facebook Does it Again – Company Sends Funeral Home Advertisements To Cancer Sufferer

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

I don’t know what it’s going to take to get people to stop using Facebook. I really don’t.

Last month, I highlighted an extremely important warning from Salim Varani in the post, A Very Disturbing and Powerful Post – “Get Your Loved Ones Off Facebook.” If you somehow missed that piece, go ahead and read it now. Here’s a an excerpt to give you a little taste:

“Oh yeah, I’ve been meaning to ask you why you’re getting off Facebook,” is the guilty and reluctant question I’m hearing a lot these days. Like we kinda know Facebook is bad, but don’t really want to know.

I’ve been a big Facebook supporter – one of the first users in my social group who championed what a great way it was to stay in touch, way back in 2006.

I got my mum and brothers on it, and around 20 other people. I’ve even taught Facebook marketing in one of the UK’s biggest tech education projects, Digital Business Academy. I’m a techie and a marketer — so I can see the implications — and until now, they hadn’t worried me. I’ve been pretty dismissive towards people who hesitate with privacy concerns.

With this latest privacy change on January 30th, I’m scared.

Given the company’s aggressive push to monetize all their users’ personal data and conversations, it was only a matter of time before we’d see an egregious real world example of what can go wrong.

It all went wrong for Daniel Kapp, an Austria-based strategic consultant diagnosed with prostrate cancer last month. Shortly after googling the disease, he became bombarded with funeral home advertisements on Facebook. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get rid of them.

The Daily Mail reports that:

A cancer patient who searched online for support about his disease was left horrified when Facebook began placing advertisement for funeral directors on his Facebook feed.

Daniel Kapp, 46, was diagnosed with prostate cancer last month. Shortly after he used the web to learn more about the illness.

When he opened Facebook the following day he said he was ‘bombarded’ with ‘insensitive’ promotions that he couldn’t remove.

‘I was just knocked off my feet to see that there on the screen,’ said Mr Kapp, who works as a strategic consultant in Austria.

‘It is just completely insensitive. And every time I tried to delete it, it appeared again.’

He blamed Facebook for monitoring the data about the searches he had done and then using it in order to sell it on to potential advertisers.

When contacted by local media, the directors of the funeral companies said they were shocked their adverts were being used to target people in this way. One said: ‘I can confirm that this should never have happened.’

It gathers information about devices, sites people visit, searches they’ve made and demographic data they have entered into their account on the social network.

Initially these cookies were just used on the site, but in September Facebook launched its Atlas ad platform that monitors these movements around the wider web.

Today Facebook added a new tool called Topic Data that now additionally scans what people are ‘saying about events, brands, subjects and activities.’

More abuses to come. Virtually guaranteed.

Facebook has not yet responded to MailOnline’s request to comment on Mr Kapp’s complaints.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. One of the most significant indications things are turning around for the better and that humanity is growing up, is when Facebook begins to bleed users. Until then…

"prostrate cancer"

What part of the body is the prostrate?

C'mon.  If the core of the article is a guy with cancer getting an inappropriate ad, at least get the name of his cancer right.

That demographic are very "appearance conscious", and so "lesser brands" just won't cut it, even though they may offer far more functionality / performance / battery endurance per $ outlay.

I think the implication was that the technology will be perfected when it predicts your impending demise without you giving it a big hint.

Sort of like getting package from (insert online marketplace here) full of toilet paper, wondering why, and then when you go to evacuate discovering that there's only 1 square left.

JIT delivery meets spooky action at a distance.

It could be far spookier: Imagine having the toilet paper delivered in a refrigerated van (when you had a particularly hot Vindaloo the previous evening . . ). THAT is when you start to really think "What's going on here??" :-)

@KnuckleDragger-X

I agree with you but the family members who survive you will be under terrible pressure to make decisions while in shock and mourning and that's where Death Inc. steps in to insist that lots and lots of money must be spent on a dead body. You think Goldman Sachs is filthy? Try any local funeral parlour for pure greed and coersion. Death Inc. is a filthy racket, one of the worst, why do you think they are in league with Facebook?

I went through this last year upon the death of my father. A lot of the pressure is self induced- we can't skimp on him now, we only get to do this once, so gotta do it right, blah blah blah. I work in an ICU and see death routinely. It sort of blunts me to wanting to be extravegant on funerals. But, my siblings all also get a say. Luckily, I convinced them to only be moderately ridiculous. We still spent somewhere near 20K. That is money that could have stayed in the family and helped some of the poorer ones. Lots of emotion/family politics all swirling about with this stuff. And the funeral home guys know it as typical and take advantage of it.

@Maskone909

Sorry to insist on it but see my post above, in fact my two posts above. Death Inc. USA is unbelievably pervasive and insidious. I'm trying to inform people of the reality. Death is inevitable we all know that but when it happens we are all vulnerable because of shock and grief - do not give away your family fortune of a few thousands of dollars to Death Inc. and a dead body.

Do it the right way. No chemical embalming and no expensive casket.Do not let anyone pressure you to do otherwise.

Embrace it? They invented it! Are you so naive? It's a huge, billion dollar business. How can you be so naive? Oh dear. When oh when will people ever grow the up ???

They don't "charge you", you have no idea what your rights are so you pay someone to do what you do not know how to do - and they charge you for what you do not even want but you are too sad and confused to even ask any questions. Well, stop it. Make it stop.

The deep urge is to relationship - at it's extreme, melting into some group or collective.  Socialism is a political/economic expression of the same urge.  People are intrinsically social but also have the capacity to operate as more-or-less independent agents -- but only if that capacity is developed, most fundamentally as the ability to face the naked existential fact of their own life and death.

socialism is much more sinister than simply attributing it to natural human behavior, or for survival.  its a product of corruption and croneyism- of powerful groups of men. to say its a natural tendincy would be to say corruption is too.  its a different matter all together when applied to individuals, vs groups, vs governments.

I use Facebook daily; mostly to troll my libtard friend with, you know, real things that are happening. Look, they already know everything anyway. Why bother to worry? If you're reading or posting on Zero Hedge you're just as far gone as anybody on Facesucker. The only way to escape "Them" is to move yourself to a cave somewhere deep within a national park and commit to a hunting and gathering lifestyle with no electricity or probably even fire. Otherwise, you're on the grid motherfucker! Have you ever walked into a convenience or grocery store? YOU'RE ON THE GRID. Have you ever driven a car? YOU'RE ON THE GRID. Have you given your real SSN to an employer? YOU'RE ON THE GRID.

It's a funny sort of fake moralism that strikes me more as generational animosity than legitimate resistance.

There is a key difference between facefuck and places like ZH.  I have not outright given my identity on here.  That means that if I post something that is outright incendiary, they at least have to have a pretext for snooping around to find out who I really am.  People on facefuck give their identities freely, which means that anything that they say is automatically open to scrutiny by the police state.

"They" know exactly who you are and absolutely everywhere you've been. "They" control the routers that make the connection between El Vaquero's PC and everything else on the internet. Absolutely every transaction is logged. You've got a file that would be a mile deep if it were a printed document.

Yes, and in order to use that, they would have to admit just how deep the police state is.  They cannot do that without risking the guillotines.  If you publically put out your identity, they need no pretext, no reason, and do not need to admit that they watch everything.

Why worry about it? It didn't help the Stasi and it won't help the American police state either in the end.

It'll be an interesting question about whether we should make all the records 100% public or destroy them. I wonder if people might be willing to feel a little more compassion for others' quirks, fetishes, and eccentricities if all their own were permanently memorialized as well?

Worry about it because if they really want to use the information that they have stored, they'll have to show their true colors.  If they really want to use it, not only will they have to go through it (IMO, there is more information than they can have humans sift through, which is another issue,) but they will have to take actions that will result in the justification of killing them outright.  They will have to bear their claws and fangs to use it.

some days you strike me as a genius, ... there really is little or no law for them, the people on this site have a special colored file (or the modern digital equivalent) and the more aggressive personalities are likely monitored relentlessly ... your only salvation, at present, is that a lot of people doing the monitoring tend to agree with the things you say, as do i

I hate to break it to you, but what used to be CCTV isn't closed circuit anymore. Now it's connected to Them. So have you ever walked into a government office? A grocery store? A convenience store? Have you showed yourself in a bank, outside a bank, or anywhere near a bank?

Boom, they've got your face and know who you are and where you live.

There is something new about them all being connected to the Internet and the NSA. Probably goes back 10, 15 years, maybe not longer than that. Don't believe me? Take a look at this.

@ ajax- Wrong. Bank camera captures your image with timestamp. They see when you do transaction with timestamp, see transaction details such as name/address/phone#/ss#/next of kin from account details in electronic database. Easy if you have access to bank servers. THINK before you type.

Well there is the additional detail that Zuckerberger is a complete liberal fascist asshole troll fuckmonster and by using his site you are supporting him and everything he believes in which other than code.org is objsctionable.  Personally I only signed up after they first published their API in order to do a prototype of a product that hooked into it.  I finally deleted my two accounts, neither of which actually used my real name, along with my developer credentials and projects about 3 months ago.  I cannot stand to support such a shitstick by using his shit, especially given how in your face he and his company are content to be in his attempt to catch Bill Gates as the richest motherfucker on the planet.

The NYPD is billing the public to improve their image.

Edits to Wikipedia pages on Bell, Garner, Diallo traced to 1 Police Plaza

Computers operating on the New York Police Department’s computer network at its 1 Police Plaza headquarters have been used to alter Wikipedia pages containing details of alleged police brutality, a review by Capital has revealed.

“The matter is under internal review,” an NYPD spokeswoman, Det. Cheryl Crispin, wrote in an email to Capital after examples of the changes were presented to the NYPD.

The edits and changes were linked to the NYPD through a series of Internet Protocol addresses, or IP addresses, which can be publicly tracked by various websites. (Here, for example, is one website that shows a number of IP addresses registered to the NYPD.) IP addresses can locate where a computer is when it connects to the Internet.

I own a health publishing website and we send email ads based on ailments. Here is how I run my business:

1) The consumer has to complete a registration form providing consent to receive ads.

2) We frequency cap how much email a user gets per month to no more than three.

3) We use a real-time opt out system. One click and the user is off the list.

4) We review content from each advertiser.

What Facebook did probably violated HIPPA laws and the Anti-Pornography and Can-Spam Act of 2004. This man probably can sue both Google and Facebook. Also, this kind of ad was very fucking tacky.

Those laws don't apply to an Austrian, in Austria.

And Hippa has been obliterated by the ACA, except when it comes to getting your own, or your child's, information.

“Lean In”, now please bend over.

And here’s the most insincere statement you will frequently hear from social media companies:

“We’re sorry if we caused you any inconvenience.”

And here’s a famous line from Jurassic Park, adapted to social  media:

“Your system developers were so preoccupied with whether they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

And for those who are still all-OK with the level of surveillance and invasion of privacy in our society, maybe this Bloomberg article will change your mind:
