Lifestyles Of The Not So Austere & Socialist: Greek FinMin Edition

Tyler Durden's picture

As the Greek people live in perpetual fear of financial ruin and are subjected, on a near hourly basis, to rumors about just what kind of humiliation they may be forced to endure next in order to insure that Christine Lagarde gets the money she needs to prop up Ukraine for another couple of months, Yanis Varoufakis isn’t about to roll over and allow his people to drown in despair. On the contrary, the finance minister apparently believes the best way to restore the faith is to show the Greek people just how good life could be by staging a not very austere photoshoot…

Yanis enjoys the the piano…

...and modest lunches...

...and hanging out on the veranda with the (very happy) wife...

...and even though he occasionally has to slum it in economy class…

...overall life is very good…

So Greece, as you face the possibility that your salaries will be suspended and your pension funds plundered, take solace in the fact that you can live well vicariously through your elected officials.

Not all Greeks are particularly amused by the pictures. Here's one reaction via Keep Talking Greece

“No, No, No! That was unacceptable!”

“What did he want to demonstrate? No, no, no… And the pictures with Danai? Holding her up with his arms?!!!”…

“At her age in a mini dress? I couldn’t believe what I saw this morning on the internet,” “What was the purpose of such photo shooting? Is he the minister of a life-style country?”

Predictably, Twitter is having a field day.

Now the Greeks will learn.  "Don't vote.  It only encourages them."

First you win the war, then you fight.  And we are still in the information war phase. Until people know what it is they WANT (and therefore, what they do not want) nothing will change.

Debt jubilee, with an end to fractional reserve currency, and usury.  Thats my prescription.

He's actually an economist (not a banker) who's best mates with Steve Keen and he subscribes to the post Keynesian school with a bit of Marx dialectic thrown in. He is trying to angle for a debt jubilee on the basis of Steve Keen's recommendations but the bankers have got the Greek nuts in a pair of pliers. The guy hates the banks and bankers. Needless to say they hate him too. The best option for Greece and the Eurozone is a one-sided sovereign debt jubilee a.k.a. default.

Agreed.  Not just for Greece.

Despite Mr. Varofakis' intentions this photo shoot is a massive public relations blunder and he should have damned well known better.

I just don't understand how his wife is suspended...it's not like she's a 97 pound Asian lady.  Or even a 108 pound Ukranian woman.  The angles look unnatural and he doesn't even look like he's squeezing to hold her up.....this is very perplexing.   Maybe it's one of those cirque du solel thingy's.

Ok, so the first pic, he is at a nice piano and one which I would judge he can play well. So he has been doing this for year. Nice pianos can be picked up dirt cheap if one has the man power to move it at the right time.

The second photo he has a pretty wife sitting at a home made, but simple meal, fish, salad, bread, roasted veggies and a bottle of table wine.

Next pic he is in a small veranda in the midst of the city. Maybe its a rent or his home.

Then he is flying, "this fucking sux its so cramped" class.

And lastly he is smiling while holding a glass of white table wine.

WTF, I would call this well educated, worked hard, middle class. Maybe he didn't live a life of maxed out credit cards and save carefully and was able to buy nice thing that lasted. Note the lack if iphones, computers, 100 inch HDTVs, etc. All in all, he appears to be a fairly down to earth guy from these pictures.

He looks like that fucking greek traitor at Thermophylae that showed the troika from back then (Persia) the back door.  Guess he is doing the same thing to Greece in his reincarnation.  If only history could have eyes to show us his face it would prove to be this maggots.

Ephialtes of Trachis (Greek: ????????, Ephialt?s; although Herodotus spelled it as ????????, Epialtes) was the son of Eurydemus (Greek: ?????????) of Malis.[1] He betrayed his homeland, in hope of receiving some kind of reward from the Persians,[2] by showing the Persian forces a path around the allied Greek position at the pass of Thermopylae, which helped them win the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC.

Hard at work, 24/7, solving economic issues that asswipes everywhere have to live with (like photo-ops and flights on planes with photo-ops and eating lots of food with photo-ops and playing piano and photo-ops and getting some and photo-ops). Asswipes, of course, don't need to worry about the stuff HE does. They're too busy sitting on a park bench trying to keep warm with newspapers because they no longer have homes and pianos and food and sex and don't have money to fly on planes because there are no longer jobs or opportunities, because Mr 'Chianti' is doing a WONDERFUL JOB.

I don't see a 500 $ price tag anywhere, nobody in their right mind should be working 24/7, the plane's economy class and even politicians do have to travel, the food is home cooked, very nice, but nothing outrageous, and he knows how to play the piano and has a shiny one at home. So what? While I'm certainly not rich, I can send you a photo of myself next to my Cade, a 25 year old heavy duty touring bike with top case and saddle bags, cruise control, on board compressors for suspension and passenger seat when you're driving two up, the works. It looks like it came out of the show room only yesterday, I picked it up second hand for 2.500 euro, I service it myself, it's troublefree and an awesome ride.

I don't understand the hysterics here, this article is unworthy of ZH.

How often do we come upon a George Washington or John F. Kennedy?  Once in a lifetime.  At this point, I'd suggest of a man of honor and integrity who would step up to the plate today and save the world from the bankers should be in a place that is hidden from all of us, contacted only through internet and anyone who knows his/her where abouts should be treated accordingly.

If JFK had lived, we would not be here today.  But he was sent into a city street, in a state that was not democrat and allowed drive without any safety measures other than a few secret service police obviously working for the other side and killed in a fashion that was more than assassination, it was a messaget to any president or politician who tried to break away from t h e  f u c k i n g  b a n k s .

It is time the "nice" guys played their game - Calling all Assassins.  Go get the men behind the red shield and everyone who shares his DNA, and end this fucking circus once and for all.  What are we waiting for is my only question.  How hard can it be to find a man who lives in a castle?

Soooooooo . . . Does this guy look anything like Mr. Trump, Mr. Corzine, Mr. Blankfein, Mr. Buffet, Ms. Clinton . . . .  or any other of the hundreds of Private Jet, Private Yacht ASSHOLES that run the Oligarchic Plutocracy of the USA???

Really?

He looks like maybe average upper middle class American to me. What exactly wrong with that?

Zerohedge I hope they're paying you well for an obvious besmirching article. What exactly is EU-Fakkis guilty of? Having a meal with his family? Yes, that might be "lavish" when compared to those that rummage through the garbage bins, but I'm sure that many others in Greece are also having meals with their families. I don't see any wealth or lavishness on display, but an ordinary man. Could it be, that the apartment with a nice view of the Acropolis is government provided? And even if it isn't, so what?

The fact that you published this drivel shows me that you either want to appeal to the populist [manipulatable] idiot (ads are also good), or you don't have an appreciation for the dynamics in Greece. Fact - most of the funds that the EU spent to "bail out" Greece actually went directly into the pockets of the big EU banks. The Greeks assumed all of the additional debt and effectively indentured their kids and their kids' kids to pay off that debt so that the equity holders of these large non-Greek institutions can continue to misallocate capital instead of being punished for the obvious malinvestment. Zerohedge, why don't you publish an article that tells us who exactly is the equity holder and who exactly sits on the boards of these banks? Yes, I thought so.

In an unrelated observation, the quality of your content has dropped over the years. It used to be that there'd be at least one great story a day on your web site. These days we get more populist drivel which attracts the lower IQ crowd (judging by some of the wag the dog responses to this article) and on average, the count of quality stories these days is about one a week. The rest of the noise is made up of "articles" that have no data substantiation, or analytics of any sort -- the junk you find in the shitty newspapers that we came to Zerohedge to get away from in the first place. I'd recommend reducing the article count (quality is always better than quantity). If there's no data-driven analysis in the story, or opinions that are substantiated by data and/or years of experience (you know, the kind of stuff that one can learn from and trade on), then please don't post it. What exactly is the value-added from articles like "Spot the Odd One Out", "What Americans Think" and the rest of the BS?

+1 to you CBM. Was refraining from posting in this article, but had to reply to your post.

Doubt his authenticity in standing for the Greek people and not the Troika - valid doubt, and my own stance in this game. Call him a traitor based on these pictures? For fuck's sake - I am sure many ZHers, let alone 'leaders' and 'important' rich people, lead similarly 'lavish' lives. Since when did having a decent (not extravagant) meal become a crime?

Another ZHer whose comments I generally enjoyed reading over the years, americanspirit, took his departure last year, due to the reasons you state in the third text block of your post. All good things come to an end. This place was sold down the river the day the old Tylers up and left after cashing out, and most of the independent researchers that added immeasureable value to the comments section also left. The quantity of articles is a function of featured guest posters. The quality is a function of Tylerian caliber and discretion.

If the primary source for an article is WSJ, I guess I didn't need to cancel my subscription after all.

If a man loves his wife, and she loves him, then they are wealthy beyond measure. Most people are poverty stricken in this regard.

To criticize a man based on the physical appearance of his wife is the mark of a true loser; and in the Great State of Alabama, is a wonderful way to earn an ass whipping of epic proportions.

I see nothing wrong with her whatsoever.

I live as well as he does, no doubt. I would not have the bread on the table, so I live better.

It is okay for him to be content, happy, and well off in his own life. It is okay for him to be in love with his wife.

I don't eat wheat. Helps with mood stuff, bloating, and I don't gain weight.

I like the bread, but I hurt maybe 15 minutes after eating it. I think more folks are like me than we realize. It took me a long time to figure out bread was hurting me.

This is awful, but I see his pretty wife, slightly plump, and I know she could knock the extra weight off in a month or even two weeks if she laid off bread and sugar.

Fri, 03/13/2015 - 20:52 | 5887531 Pinche Caballero

You are right with each your points above, especially the one about not enough people realizing the need to drastically reduce wheat intake in their diet. I know full well, as I live in a part of the country where obesity is prevalent.

My own experience years ago led me to eliminate all wheat, including products with wheat fillers, from my diet. The first week I suffered withdrawals as severe as any from quitting nicotine. However, over the course of several months, I quickly lost 35 lbs.

The results were drastic, nearly immediate, and have improved my quality of life overall.

Now I am just careful with what I eat.

Today I passed on a doughnut from the box of doughnuts brought into the office by a coworker. A fresh-baked loaf of homemade bread, though, still gets the better of me.

I was not on top of it, to detect your sarcasm! I should have.

Sugar is my drug I detox from. The bread is wonderful, but I make the stupid mistakes with sugar, unfortunately.

Meat, veg, good quality fats, some fruit, maybe rice or potato once or twice a week, is best for me. Some do poorly with steak, for me, my engine runs perfectly and I am really happy with a good steak. Tell me bad news or give me a problem to solve, after steak, I am your rock. After a candy bar? Oh GOd. I have been judged negatively for eating steak before, this is one reason I might have some sympathy for this guy. Yeah I eat steak, but I don't buy a bunch of useless stuff and I don't have processed foods in the house, so I spend less on food and luxury than others.

Every body is really different. I did awful as a vegetarian. Others swear by it. Congrats on getting off the wheat.

The whole issue of wheat and gluten intolerance has bothered me because it has been a staple for human history. Rome was built on wheat. Some research I have read recently has suggested it may be in fact roundup and its heavy use in wheat farming that may be the culprit. Glyphosate specifically.

Have you tried ancient sources such as farro or emmer?

I don't think he is awesome, I don't disagree with what you have said. I take the other side of the coin. I think McCain, Graham, and certainly Dimon have been shown to live quite high on the hog. Their lifestyles deserve our mockery. Jamie has let us know in no uncertain terms he deserves it.

The Fin Min's pictures are bad because he is supposed to be representing people who are in financial trouble, not because the house or the food is unreasonable.

The private life private is a great solution to this, which does point up some out of touch narcissism.
