Many of these foreign investors then converted their dollars into gold, as was common practice in international monetary transactions at the time, in order to repatriate their holdings back to Europe. It could be that the USA is now a net debtor nation. We don't hear much about this. But foreign Investment is larger than US investment in other nations. I believe it is $28 Trillion in foreign investment in the USA while we have like $22-24 Trillion in Foreign Investment (assets).
