Greek PM To Meet With Putin Amid Cash Crunch

Tyler Durden's picture

With Greece digging around in the couch cushions to try and scrape up €2 billion by Friday in order to make payments to the IMF, the ECB, and Goldman, and with celebrity FinMin Yanis Varoufakis doing his absolute best to sink the entire ship with a series of epic PR faux pas, one is left to wonder just where Athens will turn when Berlin and Brussels finally reach the end of their ropes with what increasingly looks like gross incompetence in the Aegean. We may have gotten the answer to that question today via Reuters

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will visit Moscow on April 8 after being invited to talks by Russian President Vladimir Putin, a Greek government official said on Tuesday.

Greece's government has previously said Putin had invited Tsipras to visit Moscow on May 9 and it was not immediately clear if that trip had been changed. It would be Tsipras's first official visit to Moscow since being elected in January.

There you have it. As Syriza faces the unenviable proposition of either completely giving up on its campaign promises or plunging the Greek economy and banking system into a drachma death spiral, it appears as though Athens is playing the one card it has left, which is threatening to effectively surrender itself to the Kremlin. As Reuters notes, this wouldn’t be the first time Greece has (maybe) inadvertently created speculation around the possibility that Moscow could end up being the White (or Red) Knight:

Tsipras's left-wing government ruffled feathers among European partners in its initial days in power with comments suggesting Greece might not support EU policy on Russia.

That prompted speculation that Greece might look to Moscow for financial aid to stave off bankruptcy, though Athens rejects the idea.

It’s also worth noting that Tsipras is calling for a high level huddle with Angela Merkel, Francois Hollande, and Mario Draghi on the sidelines of this week’s EU summit. Here’s Reuters again

The Greek official said Tsipras had personally made his appeal for a meeting this week in a phone call to Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, who organizes EU summitsand coordinates business between the EU's 28 national governments.

Tusk's spokesman Preben Aamann confirmed on Tuesday that Tusk was in contact with Tsipras and other EU leaders about organizing a meeting on the margins of the summit.

Merkel spoke with Tsipras on Monday amid simmering tensions between Berlin and Athens over his government's economic plans and invited him for talks in the German capital on March 23.

At that meeting Tsipras plans to reiterate Greece's commitment to implementing reforms and to raise Athens' cash problems, the Greek government spokesman said.

In other words, the Greek PM may be employing the always effective “negotiate or I might talk to Putin” ruse in order to secure some leverage at a time when Germany and France are already under pressure to deal more forcefully with the Russian presence in Ukraine. This is all made especially ironic by the fact that Tsipras is now “borrowing” from the public purse in order to pay back the IMF who will promptly channel the funds to bailout Kiev.

Oh, the geopolitical ironies.

But Lavrov said that some European leaders were still expected to come, including those from Slovakia, Norway, Greece and several Balkan nations.

In addition to Kim, Lavrov said the leaders of China, Cuba, India, Mongolia, South Africa and Vietnam had confirmed their attendance.

And these missiles will be pointed too!! They spend billions for guidance technology but the missles have to be "pointed" in a particular direction. So when the wind blows they have to point the missile 10 degrees to the left to compensate?

Excellent  point. Greece is in Europe but look at the location. It is not culturally oriented to Western or Central Europe, nor to the Islamic east which is only a fishing boat away. Rather it has always been oriented to its far northeast Orthodox kinfolk. It's only since the NWO took over Europe that the natural identity and culture of Greece was redirected into a Marxist Euro weenie state.

With the Bolshevik bloodsucking parasites booked out of Russia it will resume its thousand year old Orthodox traditions. It's just a split up family trying to reconnect and forge ties. There is no historical animosity between the two, so this might work out well for both. A disaster for the EU.

Donald Tusk HATES Putin and probably Russians in general. He also tried to sabotage the Russian gas pipeline (North Stream) going to Germany via the sea, avoiding Poland that didn't want to host the Russian pipeline over its territory. Donald Tusk became PM of Poland after the previous one crashed in that airplane traffic in Smolensk.

So to piss off Tusk, Tsipras just has to go and pay a visit to Putin.

Russia is actually pretty good at free trade, Europe had a good thing going with Russia and the Atlanti-CYSTS had to destroy it.  Russia sold oil and gas and got European goods in return and the business was growing.

Greece goes back to the Drachma, starts making stuff to sell to Russia, has a naval port, Russian tourists, acts as a transfer point for Russian gas from Turkey to Greece to Europe.

2. Cash for Greek Agricultural products
3. Join AIIB
4. Natgas+Oil pipeline from Russia, via Black Sea and Turkey, through Greece to Macedonia (then to Serbia and Hungary)
5. Principal Partner (co-owner) of Aegean development of gas fields
6. Cut Greek NATO spending in half, exit in 2-3 years. Every Euro removed from NATO budget to be added to Greek Navy.
7. Tell ECB to "Go stuff it!" Don't be polite about it.

There are many possible reasons for this show.

One being - This is just theater for the common Greek people.  They come back and tell them, we tried but Russia will not really help us, now let us go back to working just with the EU.  (And trying to regain their "rebel" image.)  If the Greeks buy the act then it stalls any movement to oust the current leaders/traitors and gives the traitors more time to assit the EU bankers in looting Greece.

Anyone with a shred of dignity, productivity, or a work ethic left Greece and joined the diaspora a long time ago. What's left are the dregs. Once you understand that, the rest of this farce falls into place. There aren't any good guys here. It's ironic that the final power struggle before Greece pulls a Ukraine will be between leftists and Neo-Nazis. Just grab a beer and watch the Molotovs start flying.

At some price (very high) Greece could sell sovrignty to an island and not miss it. Russian navy always wanted a warm water port, and Russian Oligarchs would like the mansions with ocean views they would build. Also, ordinary Russian tourists would have a warm, culturally friendly place to spend Rubels.

The situation is fluid, dynamic & evolving....

What happened to the 4 months extension that was INKED with Germany last month ?

China also offered a bridge loan to Greece as well back then.

The fractures & fissures are materializing within the EU more it appears. Perhaps infighting regarding the order or alignment ? The US's toxicity regarding World hegemony is metasticizing. The US is the "Poopy Pants Kid" in the room or "Turd in the Punchbowl" at the World's party that nodoby wants to play with.

BRICS will be the new game in town & US could fade into Deep State Technocracy / Neo-Fuedalistic state or Will the US offer a "Faustian Bargain" to co-rule w/ Russia & China via UN in the NWO ?

You can't roll in it without getting any on you...

This sounds like another barnyard, manure filled, unauthored ( attributed) hit piece on Greece.   We all know Greece needs a Caesrian Section Solution as similar to ancient Rome.   The bottom line here is that Germany owes Greece their WWII war reparations, adjudicated, recorded but never paid, while Greece has to play nice and say nothing ghastly out loud just before they joined EU.   Bottom line.  Greece ownes 340+ Billiion, and can never in the wildest stretch of anyone's imagination, pay it back.  Most would be about 100 Bil, and that is LESS than what Germany owes Greece.  Since the German War Repartions are legally arrived upon, and officially recorded, the debt owned Greece is no less than the debt owed Germany.

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
