It's Time For Angela Merkel To Stand Up

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Raul Ilargi Meijer via The Automatic Earth blog,

I need to start of off the bat with an update to this piece, which I started writing yesterday, since I now know that Angela Merkel actually did invite Alexis Tsipras on Monday. It only took her two months…. But that doesn’t take away anything from my point that Merkel has been sorely lacking and missing, it just goes to prove that point.

And if she doesn’t get her act together very quickly (why not ask Tsipras to be in Berlin tomorrow morning?!), this will, I’ve said it before, go down as her main legacy. She will be known as the person who let Europe slip into war, for no good reason whatsoever. Here’s what I started off with last night (Oz time):

The increasing ugliness of the ‘negotiations’ between the Greek Syriza government and the rest of the eurozone, which is ruled by the German government, needs to be halted and put in reverse. There is an urgent need for a detente, for cooler heads and for trust. And there is only one person who can act to create these things: Angela Merkel. But Merkel is nowhere to be found or seen.

The increasing ugliness of the propaganda war the west is waging against Russia and its president Vladimir Putin, also needs to be halted. There is an even more urgent need there for a detente, for cooler heads and for trust. There is only one person who can act to create these things: Angela Merkel. But Merkel is AWOL.

There are German voices in the Putin case that call for reason and quiet, and that have labeled people like NATO head Stoltenberg, NATO General Breedlove and US State Department ‘Assistant’ Victoria Nuland more or less insane. But Merkel’s voice is not among them, nowhere to be heard.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble was born in 1942. That means he was alive when German troops committed the worst of their war crimes and atrocities on Greek soil, and on Greek people, which the Syriza government says it wants to receive war reparations for. But Schäuble high-handedly poo-poohs these demands, claiming everything has been settled decades ago. As if he were talking about things that happened 1000 years ago or more.

They did not, Mr. Schäuble, they happened during your lifetime, and no level of high-handedness, not one level of it, is appropriate here on your part. The only appropriate reaction is humbleness and the highest level of respect you are capable of. Whether there’s a legal issue is something for legal experts to decide, but until then, you have no right to poo-pooh anything.

Besides, you’re a finance minister, and this is not a finance issue, it’s far too sensitive to be regarded as such. The only person who should indeed address it is your boss, Angela Merkel. But no-one’s seen her around.

Merkel should have told Schäuble weeks ago to keep his trap shut, but she has instead allowed him to antagonize Athens even more. And blame the Greeks for that.

It may already be too late when it comes to the Ukraine issue. Angela should have intervened a long time ago. She did not. She suddenly turned her back on her friend Vladimir, for reasons she never explained, and allowed US and NATO hotheads to completely take over European politics. Never a good idea, for obvious reasons.

And now she may be stuck with the consequences: a war on her doorstep. Which, in reality, has of course already started. 6000 Ukrainians are gone, millions have been forced to leave their homes. Angela Merkel could have prevented most of this from happening. Blood on your hands, girl.

She let Schäuble get out of hand with his hugely out of place and out of whack comments on Greece’s financial situation, on Varoufakis and on the crimes perpetrated by his parents’ generation in not just Greece, but certainly also in Greece. Comments not befitting the European Union’s de facto political and economical leader. And that has left space for extremists to come in and take the lead over from Merkel.

Likewise, she’s let Breedlove and Nuland take the lead in the Ukraine issue, while she could have easily defused it, leading to a situation where Putin this weekend made it a point to say that he felt so strongly about Crimea, he would have been ready to alert his nuclear capacity. That the western press chooses to put that fact in entirely different, and far more threatening terms, was and is only to be expected, for Angela as much as for you and me.

The most powerful woman in the world had better stand up now, or it will be too late in both instances.

Greece will be forced into a Grexit or Grexident, neither of which EU leaders have anywhere near the grip on that they try to convince us they have; more countries will leave after Greece, and financial markets will start betting on just that.

And the US and NATO will force Ukraine into a full blown war theater, something Merkel should never ever want to her immediate eastern flank, and something that was always entirely preventable is she had put her foot down.

Is Angela going to be the umpteenth tragic lady with a tragic footprint in history, or will she wake up in the nick of time, stand up, and say: no more of this?! We’ll soon know.

Sorry Tyler -

Germany doesn't owe the Greeks shit.  Lastly, the OP isn't that good at the maths.  Schäuble was born in 42 but the battle for Greece was in 41.

Math can be hard.

"Math can be hard. "  yes, but so what?  Power and control over real resources is all that matters and war is simply negotiation by other means.

So, same as it ever was then?

If we get to rewind back to the 40s -- does that mean when I marry my GF, we get to sue to Polish government for a castle is Schlesien that belonged to her family for like 150 or so years before the Soviets took it and gave to the Polish?  She'll be thrilled!  I'll let her know.

(And this is why Germany knows damn well it cannot do this, as if Germany opens up its wallet again trying to buy friends, every other group will come with their begging bowl -- hows that for European Unity)

I am not an economist or a politician, but it just seems to me the right thing to do would be for Greece to leave the euro, and Germany to get the rest of the eurozone help them do it gracefully as possible.  I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel of the Greeks being held hostage and gradually pillaged by the more efficient producers, as long as there is no Greek currency to fluctuate up and (mostly) down against the euro.  They're gradually being turned into debt slaves owned by Germany.  "A deal's a deal," I'm sure they said that about Weimar Germany's situation too.  My 2 cents

Agree with you 100% on this.

NO MORE REPARATIONS FROM POST WAR GERMANY TO ANYONE

These affairs and claims were all settled and paid decades ago. Can we sue France for Napoleon's wars? Of course not!

I do have symphathy for Greece and I do believe the Greeks have been sold down the river by their own leaderships in the past. Go after the former government of the Papas if they want to recoup some of the loot that was stolen during the first years of Greek EU membership.

Tsirpas and Varoufakis are playing with fire. I understand that they're at their wits end. From the beginning, I suggested that they need to prepare GREXIT and start anew with a competitive currency and try to postpone their debt payments until the 12th of Never. There is even a legitimate basis to declare all debts as odious debts at the courts of Le Hague.

Merkel and Schäuble are responsible for the tensions and the escalation of this strife. They should have prevented bailouts of German banks on the backs of ordinary Greeks and they should prevent the ECB from overtaking the national German treasuries.

It is high time this entire charade unwinds and gets tossed into the dustbin of history. But not before all ECB debts get defaulted upon and none of the holders of European debt notes gets made whole.

New cards, new money, fresh start for all!

No expectations whatsoever. Just stop giving them more already. It's not helping anyone. Germans need to realize that they will be footing this bill with higher taxes and reduced services or benefits sooner or later.

Best to take the medicine now. There are hundreds of billions of Euros parked across German regional banks. Just sitting there in saving accounts and actually losing money. Only 16% of Germans own stocks. Most money is deposited in banks or in insurance policies.

A Greek default is not the end of the world for Germany. It sucks but it is what it is. We get shafted again.

Besides war reparations, which may or may not be too late to ask for, Greece made loans to Germany during the Occupation which today are worth billions. Greece and many other countries are paying back loans from decades past. (I don't know if this is true but I heard Greece is still paying back some loans from the Ottoman period.) Why should Germany be exempt? Germany also stole archeological treasures. I don't know if there is a statute of limitations issue but the Greek government is obligated to make its case.

We Germans owe the Greeks exactly 478 million Reichsmark out of a loan from the early 1940ies. Todays value exactly: ZERO. But if the Greeks want to, we can print those 478 million Reichsmark for them, they may use it as toilet paper.

And tell me what archeological treasures were stolen by Germany? I don´t know about any. And if there are really a few illegal artifacts in Germany the Greeks can have them back. Seems ro me these are just the usual anti German propganda lies of the Greeks.

Fully agree on all points you make here and above. All persons involved in any atrocities back then are dead or extremely aged. Born in 41, 42 or even 36 does not make you accountable. I don't understand all the sympathy for Greece around here. The bill has come due and someone else is supposed to bail them out?

How about a market solution, like a return to the Drachma and a bond default, like Greece has done 4 times in the past 100 years?

You would be correct, the tragedy is that, what was once a debt owed to a bunch of bankers is now debt owed to EU citizens. And these very citizens are being bombarded by hateful propaganda so they never think about the damn bankers who made the loans and should have suffered the oncoming default but instead focus their anger on normal Greeks, whose biggest sin was being mislead by politicians (sign right up if you never fell victim to that, whatever your nationality is).

Merkel is doing what VICHY DC always does, "Kicking the Can down the Road"... after all the people don't tell her what to do.

She answers to the Big Money Powers and Bankers, she herself is an Elite.

We have all of these smart people around from Ivy League Schools and when they finally look at a Problem "Magic" it turns out to be a very narrow problem in which no one is implicated for stupidity or complicity or responsibility... even dead people are immune from responsibility.

So then they come up with a narrow solution: everyone must work harder or try to get along better.

Narrow Narrative, Narrow Problem, Narrow Solution that doesn't interfere with the Wealthy Interests... even if it means War in Iraq, or 14 years of War in Afghanistan... or even if it means a huge, expensive, new, "Cold War" at a time when Budgets are controlled by the EU Treaties.

Even if it means a new War in Iraq or with Iran or with Ukraine Rebels or with Russian Federation after 14 Years of World Record Spending by any Empire or Kingdom known to the Western World (The USA).

Thank you Tyler for another piece of Zionist propaganda. During the entire war American and British deliberately were killing/bombing civilian German population. It is Americans who starved to death more than a million of German POWs immediately after the WW II. It is the USA were deliberately killing civilian Japanese population ending up by dropping nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki cities with exclusively civilian population and no military value whatsoever. A war is a war and Germans were no any worse than American, British, and Stalin's USSR.

Shall I remind you Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, etc?

Tyler, your low-life Zionist and pro-Putin propaganda is disgusting. Who are you working for? Voice of Moscow or Voice of WallStreet?

Power w/o brains and guile means NOTHING: Ask a work horse when he's gonna reverse roles with the farmer.  Ask any Beast of Burden when it's gonna reverse roles with or be free of its "tiny, puny" master.

So it is with TPTB:  They are a small % of the Pop, lack physical size and prowess, and yet they keep steering and controlling the Unwashed Masses of Christians and Muslims in whatever direction and conflict they want to.  Facts are facts, and cognitive dissonance hurts, I know.

Given all this... Merkel is just another intelligent but dumb and vain politician, who has been stroked and deluded into thinking that she is "in control".  She is NOT.  She's just the public face of a German nation that is the Water Carrier for larger and hidden forces.  Merkel and Germany are the "Beast of Burden" in this game of Global Imperialism, and the PIIGS are there to be pulled along by the German work horse, until its job is done, or it wears itself out.

Germany and Merkel need a kick in the teeth, to wake up to what's rally happening on the world stage, and what part it has been assigned to play.  Maybe then and only then can they grow up to be a real power.  The Litmus Test will be if/when they kick out the Ally (50,000 US!) forces out of Germany.  Until then, it's just more German bluster and chest beating, or typical German kowtowing -- as the case may be.

It is highly likely that Merkel is controlled through various levels of blackmail and threats of personal harm to relatives.  This is standard procedure with TPTB.

We shouldn't sell Greece short just because Oberkle can't play up to their game. Greek outreach to Russia is smart. Varoufakis is the world's first finmin rockstar, now outed as having a hot wife. Tsipras's case for more German reparations is timely, and cleverly begins by recalling that Germany's fascism began with the humiliation of Versailles after WWI. I have not seen her addressing the PEGIDA problem properly as if there is no racism here in Germany. There were no proper conversations about this either.

You say she is doing her job, I say the EZB is doing its job to keep the whole thing together for a few more years.

6th of May- I live in Germany and am not happy with Angie running things. What I meant was that Germany is in some seriously deep Shit, which will be getting worse real soon. Why does everyone expect so much of her ? She can't save Europe or the World, but some expect her to ?  It doesn't make sense for Me, thats all.

I'm of Greek origin and I feel like you do-- Greeks and Germans are both good and bad. I tend to think that there are more bad people than good in the world, but I am a glass half empty kind of person.

I think that Germany is not the problem in Europe. Certain countries, like Greece, are trying to convince their populations that this is the case, that life in the eurozone would be fine and dandy if big, bad Germany left people alone. They don't want people to know that the eurozone is itself the problem. Having economic matters, which, aside from defense perhaps, are the most important matters for one's government, decided by unelected bureacrats is a recipe for disaster. So I don't blame Germany. It just happens to be the most powerful country. Any other European country would have acted the same way in its position.

But this is exactly Merkel's MO, she Never stands up for anything and always lets her henchmen do the doing and talking for her, .. how do you think she has enjoyed such high popularity with the German people for so long? Because she Never opens her mouth to talk about anything divisive or takes a clear stand on any important issue(unless it has already been settled by other means).

And this will not change. She's ultimately just another puppet and her only objective (given to her by her puppeteers) is to stay in power for as long as possible, making as few waves as possible(unless they tell her otherwise).

Good enough reason for Angela Merkel, aka Comrade Erika. Think any made men or women in the Stasi ever forgave their Russian comrades for stabbing them in the back in 1989?

Throw in Erika's personal hatred of Putin for humiliating her at every opportunity (someone has to), and you've got a recipe for the Third World War. For Wessi men the conquest of Russia is mostly about the opportunities for plunder. For the world's most notorious citizeness of the GDR, it's personal. Hell hath no fury.

Yes but it was the British and the Germans that sidelined themselves in Greece, the British weakened their N African campaign and had to evacuate ANZAC troops and had a lot of POWs taken on Crete.......and Germany had to prop up an Italian campaign in Greece as well as N Africa diverting huge resources from Operation Barbarossa which had been the main goal of Hitler's policies from 1920s.

Merkel should grasp the historical sweep and know that nothing in Europe is unconnected - it bubbles underneath the surface and you are always on the caldera

The people will be so poor (except the defense contractors)... that people will sell everything for food and medicine... they will pull wood, stones, appliances, furniture to sell in the streets or at the market... and VICE will rise drugs, prostitutes, human trafficking.

Greece might become the biggest port city in Europe. One big port with graft, vice, prostitution, Smuggling everywhere just to maintain it's GDP.

Hey maybe they could make it big smuggling people from Syria, Libya, Turkey, Iraq, and Palestine, refugees from the sound US War Policies in the Middle East, ... into Europe

I think Money Rules all Men and Europe too.

Money gets under your skin and it doesn't take long for Public Officials to start doing whatever the holders of Money want them to do. Look at the Open Borders and how both Unskilled Labor Rates and Skilled Labor Rates have been brought down or been kept flat. Chamber of Commerce wants open borders and has Lobbied for Out Sourcing overseas and Off Shoring as well. Effectively there are no Capital Controls to prevent US Workers from being laid off and put on SNAP-EBT, Welfare, and use their kids status to get many other Social Program Welfare.

Repost:

In the old days of the Haciendas or the two class system in South America I have this vision of the Wealthy living in big buildings with Balconies or Terraces. They just throw trash down on the street where the poor live.

This must do something to the Psyche.

Brazil still has millions living in favelas. People probably feel inclined to Socialism and that having millions of poor people is normal.

I looked at the Education System a little. It seems just like the USA System or Wilhelm Von Humbolt Prussian System from Germany.

https://feltd.wordpress.com/2010/09/16/the-prussian-german-educational-s...

Question is are all countries set up to allow the Elite or wealthy to attract foreign Investment... while holding domestic investment low to keep wages low & control the people. Off Shoring and Out Sourcing overseas also controls wages and suppresses growth of a middle class.

The Dirty Wars, the Military Coups in the Cone of South America, the Chicago Boys, are said to have destroyed a growing middle class and industrialization. So maybe this is how Neoliberals and the Elites plan to keep labor cheap and keep their Hacienda control.

Old Money and New Money in Europe is no different.

USA is like a Rich Uncle to NATO & Europe with funding for Military Bases and Employment for Local Nationals... Therefore with Super Power Status, Huge Financial Power, and Direct Funding to German and other Governments... Money again pulls Europe to the USA's Agenda.

Of course this implies there's any profit to Germany's owners in frontloaded and perhaps low RoI domestic improvement as opposed to rent-seeking, mercantilism, naked speculation, etc. Silly me.

Schäuble = complete psychopath
Merkel = champion in "Aussitzen", well learned from her mentor (Kohl)

However:
- Merkel cannot really influence Ukraine events, except utter some words (and as her strongest condemnation is "not hilfreich" that might be moot too.)
- Greece bringing up war crimes and reparations at this time is ridiculous and not worth even acknowledging with any statement
- her ultimate damning legacy will be to have sat idly in the up-run to another massive currency devaluation, if not another "Währungsreform" in Germany once again
- but Merkel's poll numbers are still very strong, so the German majority sees nothing amiss yet

Greeks are clever to say "Oh, morality? Ok, let me show you this nazi debt here..."

Somebody believes that Putin commanding the biggest nuclear power can be forced military to retreat? Even US-forces can't.

But if there is any politician out there to influence Putin it's Merkel - because Putin places value on European solutions.

Only economic pressure makes sense. In that sense it could be done more - but Putins position is not as incomprehensible as it is propagandized officially. The Eurozone has enough problems to handle - in first place Germany - and supporting another 60 million-folk like Ukraine could easily overstrain it's core. The Ukrain crisis in first place is an internal conflict and has to be handled between Kiev and it's eastern parts.

I'd like to know when we will start hearing about the crimes Vladimir's parents generation perpetrated on the peoples of Eastern Europe. War reparations would come in handy also.

As to the Germans and the Greeks, I think the Germans were to ones who bribed the entrire political class into backing this horrible Euro project. So if we start laying the blame for anything at the Germans feet, let's at least blame them for the right misdeeds.

As to war reparations, I think our young marxist pm in Greece or his champaign marxist sidekick minfin already mentioned that Greeks could never repay what they were forced to borrow. It looks like the debt is E320b. So let's call this war reparations and say we are even.
