Russia Escalates Military Posture: Deploys Strategic Bombers To Crimea, Launches Massive Drills Across Nation

Tyler Durden's picture

All those who were wondering where Putin had "disappeared" to, and spreading rumors whether it was more likely his girlfriend had given birth in Switzerland or aliens had abducted him, will probably be satisfied if he were to promptly disappear once more following news that not only yesterday had he put 40,000 troops on full alert as part of "snap-readiness exercises", but less than 24 hours followed this up with even more demonstrative military "drills" after Sputnik reported that Russian strategic Tu-22M3 (Backfire) strike bombers have been deployed to the Crimean Peninsula to hold snap combat readiness drills, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday, in addition to further massive troops and equipment deployment tests in the western part of the nation as well as around the Arctic circle.

As a reminder, Crimea was recently in the news following a weekend report citing Putin that he was ready to use nukes to secure the recently repossessed peninsula. So one can perhaps look at this as de-escalation.

“During the snap combat readiness drills by the Armed Forces, strategic Tu-22M3s will be deployed to Crimea,” the source said.

Then, perhaps to counter the build of NATO troops in the Baltics, Russia also deployed fighters and bombers to the country’s western exclave of Kaliningrad for snap combat readiness exercises, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

“Fighter and bomber aviation is to be redeployed to the Kaliningrad Region, and ground troops on the Baltic will be reinforced with Iskander missile complexes in the Western Military District that will be delivered on large landing ships from the Baltic Fleet,” the source said.

On Monday, President Vladimir Putin gave the order to bring Russia's Northern Fleet, separate units of the Western Military District and the Airborne Troops to full alert in snap combat readiness exercises. The drills involve a total of 38,000 troops, 3,360 military vehicles, 110 aircraft and helicopters, 41 ships and 15 submarines.

Snap military exercises will be held in the sea, as well as on the ground and in the air until March 21. Their ultimate goal is to improve the military capabilities of the Russian Armed Forces, according to the Defense Ministry.

And then completing the trifecta, in addition to Crimea and Kaliningrad, as many as 30 army air force crews of Russia's Western Military District are being redeployed from airfields in the Leningrad and Smolensk regions to a military airfield near the Arctic Circle as part of surprise combat readiness drills being held in the Northern Fleet and the Western Military District, according to an Interfax report.

"Army air force crews, which make up routine squadrons, are being redeployed. During the flight, the crews are practicing their pilot skills flying in units and near ground level," the Russian Defense Ministry has reported.

As a further reminder, Russia has been particularly interested in weaponizing the Arctic in recent months, the location of countless energy deposits, announcing late in 2014 it would build 13 airfields and 10 radar stations to meet "unwelcome guests." This is just a preview

The crews operating Mil Mi-24 and Mi-8 helicopters will have to cover more than 1,500 kilometers with a refueling stopover in the Republic of Karelia.

"Upon arrival, the army air force crews from the Western Military Districts will join a simulated operation to drop a landing force at a military training range, as well as will practice providing support for the Land Forces from the air, will conduct an air strike simulation against ground targets using missile and ballistic weapons, and will take part in simulated search and rescue operations," the ministry said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Northern Fleet, Armed Forces units in the Western Military District and the Airborne Troops to conduct combat readiness exercises, involving 38,000 servicemen, 3,360 units of military hardware, 41 combat ships, 15 submarines, as well as 110 airplanes and helicopters.

As Sputnik adds, military transport aviation crews of the Russian Air Force were redeployed from the Pskov region to the Severny airfield in the city of Ivanovo for further moving of personnel and equipment to a northern airfield, the press office of the Defense Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

"Military transport aviation crews will deliver paratroop units to a military airfield in Russia’s polar region under a snap combat readiness exercise. More than 10 Il-76 aircraft will be used for the redeployment. The aircraft will fly over 3,000 kilometers in 24 hours. The redeployment will take place in the daytime and in the nighttime," according to the statement.

According to the Defense Ministry, the exercises will continue until March 21

Many more are coming: the Russian Defense Ministry announced in December 2014 it planned to hold at least 4,000 military drills across the country in 2015.

And with the US now deploying tanks, armors and various other vehicles literally just across the Russian western border and soon, the Arctic as well, the possibility of an unexpected and unwelcome escalation in hostilities rises with every new military drill.

The chance of war increases everyday:

Russian President Putin says Ukraine crisis threatens nuclear war

By Alex Lantier
17 March 2015

According to a documentary aired Sunday on Russian public television, featuring interviews with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia prepared for nuclear war after last year’s pro-Western putsch on February 21-22 in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

After an all-night meeting with Russian security officials, Putin decided at dawn on February 23 to prepare the return of Crimea to Russia. Fearing that far-right Ukrainian nationalist militias would attack the largely ethnic Russian population of Crimea and the strategic Russian naval base at Sevastopol, Russia mobilized forces it stationed in Crimea, under the terms of Russia’s lease of the Sevastopol base.

The Crimean population ultimately voted to rejoin Russia, and pro-Kiev forces in Crimea did not resist and were allowed to escape Crimea unharmed. “We monitored the situation and had to bring in our equipment,” Putin said. “They would have been wiped out after the first salvo.”

According to Putin, however, as the Kremlin and the Russian military began their planning, they did not know whether NATO would react by going to war: “This could not be understood immediately, therefore at the first stage of work, I was accordingly forced to provide guidance to our Armed Forces. And not just provide guidance, but issue direct instructions, orders regarding the possible conduct of Russia and our armed forces given any development of events.”

Putin said he was ready for “the most adverse development of events.”

Breedlove, like the rest of the neocon/neoliberal warmongers, talk a good line of shit but will do essentially nothing.  There is no military scenario where the pro USSA Ukie forces can beat Russia, including going nuclear.  NATO ground troops, for example, would be eliminated once they entered Russia via tactical nukes. If Hitler and Napoleon couldn't do it, Obama certainly can't.

This is why the USSA keeps launching false flags against Russia, and uses 'isolation' to force regime change in Russia.  Unfortunately for the geographically challenged idiots that control foreign policy in the USSA, one look at a global map would tell you that Russia, with 1/6th of the worlds land mass and sharing more borders with different countries than any other nation, is impossible to isolate.

damn. I just promised myself I would not comment, today, but no, COSMOS has to come again with one giant generalization

how many military forces from how many countries are "NATO"? as a reminder, the whole thing is built up as a defensive alliance

now, you might be right or not with "What the heck are the Russians supposed to do man...", but Russia is staging a lot of "military ballets"

so the answer to that is "military ballets" staged by NATO. it's damn choreografic reaction

which countries, meanwhile, have to understand your "back off, dude"? it's way less then the NATO total of them. Among them are Poland, the US and the UK, btw

but no, NATO as such has no business in "poking it's nose into Russia". and no, NATO will not "poke it's nose into Russia"

if indeed someone will poke his nose into something, the probability will be great that it will be some "unmarked, unregistered armed combatant unit" from a deniable source. a "game" that many are playing, nowadays (and which I find even more distasteful then "straight" war)

of course, a lot of this depends on your definition of Russia. as a reminder, the per-treaties-agreed boundaries of Russia don't go as far as "NovoRussyia".

But without going into the merits or not of what "New Russia" really is (historically the old colonial boundaries of the Tsarist Russian Empire. See "New France", "New England", "New Spain"),

from the perspective of the upcoming EU Council vote, all this choreographic military splendor (I love the Backfires, btw) is bloody inopportune. How the heck are the EU Foreign Ministers going to prepare a vote to drop the sanctions if the Cremlin insists on staging all this? Could all this not have waited one week?

except if... there is absolutely no will, by the Cremlin, to have some resolution based on the current circumstances. and this is the impression I am getting, besides crazy NeoCon talk (and action) on that

You're still waiting because your question is invalid outside of your own paradigm.

You statist perspective becomes obvious when you imply that one single entity (the person answering your question as proxy for the State) can determine the borders of a country.

The proper borders of any legitimate country will be imposed by an emergent process in which factor things like economy, ethnicity, diplomacy, shared cultured and goodwill, as various internal regions.secede, as various external regions ask to be annexed, willingly.

To imply that borders should be drawn and imposed  by some governing entity in an act of territorial hegemony stinks of millenia-old top-down empire building.

Get with the program.

do you imply that the Russian Federation has no "statist perspective"? I have to admit it is coherent to the meme that it's Russia-The-Nation fighting and Russia-The-State watching

interesting world order paradigm you are proposing. a vanguard of valiant colonists followed by a rearguard of... state, nevertheless

do the Ukrainians have a right to defend, in this paradigm? and if yes, what have they the right to defend? only themselves? their Nation? their territories?

The answer to your question - despite your desperate attempts to make it as complicated as possible via legalisms - is simple: where 'should' the borders of the Russian Federation end? Why, wherever the citizens living on its borders wish it to end.

It's pretty clear that much of Eastern Ukraine wish to be in the Russian Federation. Who are the Eastern Ukrainians to deny them their wish?

America, as a nation, has existed since 1776.  But it wasn't born 'fully formed'.  Texas, California, the Pacific Northwest, were NOT part of the United States at that time.  Does that mean these parts are 'truly American'?  Or is it more complex than that?

Russia has existed as a nation since closer to the year 1300.  While America has always (?) been a republic, Russia has most often been ruled by a czar or khan.  One man, entrusted with leading the nation.  That doesn't mean one way is right, and the other is wrong!  Clearly, having a czar or khan works FOR RUSSIA.

One answer could be: Wherever they prove strong enough to dominate and Force the boundaries Westward.   After all, to some extent, would that not simply be a re-taking of what was promised to them 20 years ago to 'Not one inch Eastward'...?

Ghordius, your base of information regarding NATO is all wrong. NATO was created as a counterbalance to the USSR, and SEATO to China. In truth both communist countries were created using tax money generously provided by the Federal Reserve. NATO was the cover story to keep us all scared while the NWO created it. The USSR is gone so there is no need for NATO, right? Wrong. NATO was created as the prototype of NWO international military enforcers. NATO is a massive parasite.

Ghordius, you are right about the 'military ballets' but totally wrong about who is leading and who is reacting. These Russian exercises are a RESPONSE to the NATO exercises that started in Estonia last week. USA tanks have been parading up and down the Russian border for the last week so surprise, surprise, Russia replies with its own parade. If you lament the Russian actions this week you should doubly condemn the NATO provocation launched last week. Why couldnt NATO have waited until next week? Because it wanted to pour oil on the fire before the EU meeting. Last year the UK deployed fighter jets which paraded up and down the Russian border, A few months later Russia sends bombers to return the favour by flying round the UK. UK squeals but they asked for the visitors by their own aggressive actions. NATO does the provoking and Russia responds exactly as predicted. Of course the first big provocation was Nulands Coup in Kiev that led to Russia policing Crimea in response. Examine the timeline - the West is always aggressing and Russia defending. Alas NATO stopped being a defensive alliance when it illegally (under international law) invaded Serbia in 1999. NATO has been offensive, in every sense, ever since.

Tue, 03/17/2015 - 11:21 | 5898206 Stumpy4516

There is a difference in the actions.  The NATO tanks (and other heavy weapons to follow) have actually moved to Russia's borders.  There they will stay and increase.  Russia just parades within it's borders and flies planes in international airspace.

"the West is always aggressing and Russia defending" - yes, and the west is always advancing and Russia is always backing up.  Crimea was an excellent move but was only accomplished due to the ethnic russian population.

Serbia?  Where was the reaction?  Just more parades within Russia.  Russia should have grown a pair when it was clear Iraq1 was being staged.  Better yet, Russia/Soviets should have had the backbone to follow through with Cuba instead of being chased off.  After that once they started backing up it has not stopped.

Cyprus?  Cyprus was looted and it's gold appears to be gone.

Syria?  Syria has been and continues to be bombed by the west and it's allies.  Syria is largely destroyed and it continues.  The planes ignore Russia and Syrian planes have been shot down.  A Jordanian was also shot down but neither Russia nor Syria has dared fire on the planes from the west or Israel.

Syria is being taken down the Libya path.  Russia/Putin is so afraid of upsetting the west that he cancelled the contract to allow Syria to purchase russian missiles.  Putin feared what might result if Syria used a russian missile to shoot down a plane from NATO or Israel.

Let's look at all the Neocon wars since 1990:

The Great War of the American Empire began 25 years ago. It began on August 2, 1990 with the Gulf War against Iraq and continues to the present

Following the Gulf War, the U.S. government engages America and Americans non-stop in one substantial military operation or war after another. In the 1990s, these include Iraq no-fly zones, Somalia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Haiti, Zaire, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic, Liberia, Albania, Afghanistan, Sudan, and Serbia. In the 2000s, the Empire begins wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya, and gets into serious military engagements in Yemen, Pakistan, and Syria. It has numerous other smaller military missions in Uganda, Jordan, Turkey, Chad, Mali, and Somalia. Some of these sub-wars and situations of involvement wax and wane and wax again. The latest occasion of American Empire intervention is Ukraine where, among other things, the U.S. military is slated to be training Ukrainian soldiers.

Strategic bombers in Crimea add nothing.  Neither does the snap alert of 40,000 troops.  The troops are being jerked around.  The money has to come from someplace.  Far better this than more Russian penetration of Ukraine.  Which, I note for the benefit of this board, remains a sovereign country.

If Ukraine is a sovereign country then what about the illegal, U.S.-funded junta in Kiev, instituted by political organizations,  (NGO's) given five billion dollars by Washington, as revealed by “fuck the EU” Victoria Nuland. Ukraine was broke, and political parties and organizations were vastly financed by foreign nations, (US & EU) which then encouraged them with covert and overt means to foment a violent coup. The junta in Kiev then illegally deposed the democratic president, and then illegally deposed all of its governors.

And the West has the right to preach about respecting Ukraine's sovereignity.  A little duplicity here?

I'm not sure if all the commenters here understand what this meme of "Ukraine is no sovereign country" really means. It's a propagandistic action to declare it as a territory up for grabs

corsair, yes. it is funny, for our modern eyes, including gaining sovereign territories through inheritance or marriage

but the modern Russian Federation ain't a anarcho-capitalist bunch of sovereignty/state-haters. it's a conservative polity, in this moment, and a sovereign nation, too

in fact I guess you are honest enough to admit that the Russian Nation is a very highly prioritized agenda point of the Cremlin and the Russian population

so it all boils down to the question I posed above to cosmos: where do you think the boundaries of the Russian Federation ought to be?

Tue, 03/17/2015 - 10:53 | 5898082 corsair

I was aluding to Ukraine's sovereignity and the fact that the last piece of its sovereign territory was gifted to that Soviet Republic a mere 60 years ago through an act of despotic whim by Khrushchev (that being only the last in a succession of simmilar acts in the past by Lenin and Stalin).

As for boundaries of the Russian Federation, I think we need a new set of rules (globally) before we can answer that question. Personally, I'm also interested in where boundaries of Serbia ought to be.

so the answer is no ?

Khrushchev was no Stalin, or was he ?

Excerpt from http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/february/25/newsid_2703... :

"  1956: Khrushchev lashes out at Stalin

The Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, has denounced Joseph Stalin as a brutal despot.

In a sensational speech to the 20th Congress of the Communist Party Mr Khrushchev painted a graphic picture of a regime of "suspicion, fear, and terror" built up under the former dictator who died three years ago.

He said he wanted to break the "Stalin cult" that has held Soviet citizens in its thrall for 30 years.

The prime minister described the purges during the period of 1936-38.

He implied that one of Stalin's most trusted aides Kirov had been assassinated in 1934 at the leader's behest. "

Is it likely not even high party officials would dare to question him giving away Crimea ?

Your thinking is rather binary on this topic, and probably on purpose as it seems you do not want truth to undermine your argument.  You already decided beforehand where you want to land.  Maybe this issue touches your personal interests more than mine.  Furthermore, the question whether anybody voiced opposition has little to do with prerogatives.   Thanks for sparring anyways.

Ghordius: "where do you think the boundaries of the Russian Federation ought to be?"

With due respect to your intellectual athleticism, I think your question is misdirected.  The real question is actually 3 main questions: 1. "How far does the USA think its spheres of influence should extend?"; 2. What threats does Russia perceive in US/EU/NATO moves such as the coup in Ukraine, moving NATO forces into eastern Europe up to Russia's borders, sanctions against Russia's financial interests, economic warfare against Russia, and in US/NATO/ISRAEL/US-ME allies moves against Syria, Iraq, and Iran; and 3. What measures does Russia see as necessary to counter moves made against it and its allies?

The opinion of Cosmos, and my opinion, of where the boundaries of the Russian Federation should be are of little import in these larger geopolitical questions, IMHO. (with due respect to Cosmos as having the perfect right to her opinions.  I have found the comments of Cosmos in many ZH threads to be relevant, reasonable, and well stated).

There can be no doubt that Russia sees its current boundaries as inviolable, and that any move into territories at or near its borders may present an intolerable threat to Russia.  The idea that NATO may move into Ukraine and install missile and anti-missile bases along the Russian border is obviously seen by Russia as an intolerable threat.  Also, the idea that Russia would be kicked out of its naval base in Crimea was seen as intolerable by Russia.

The current propaganda war waged by the Western media against Putin and Russia has been a great success in the EU and USA.  Many, if not most, people in the USA and EU are convinced that Russia invaded Ukraine, that Russia and Putin are evil, and that the EU is under threat of invasion by Russia.  EU politicians either swallowed the propaganda or saw it as being in their political interests to follow the sentiments of their voters.  When it became more evident recently that the EU was being played by the USA to the detriment and danger of the EU, Merkel and Hollande broke ranks and sought to de-escalate the crisis that the USA was stoking.  The Minsk 2 ceasefire accord resulted, but the USA and its puppets in Kiev are doing their best to sabotage the accord and to rejuvenate the Ukrainian threat against the eastern Ukrainian separatists and the threats against Russia itself.

The recent military exercises by NATO forces along Russia's western borders, attempts at a Maidan in Russia, stirring up a natural gas war between the EU and Russia, military adventures in Syria and Iraq with ISIS, negotiations with Iran, and attempts to gain influence in the Central Asian countries at or near Russia's southern border are all moves in the continuing geopolitical games played by the USA as it continues its attempt to secure the survival of its World hegemony and status as the World's sole superpower.  As the financial situation of the USA becomes more desperate, with its overwhelming debts, its failing economy, and its increasingly questionable currency (diluted by rampant money-printing, increasingly excluded from international transactions, and losing its sole World Reserve Currency status), the moves by the USA become increasingly reckless.  As Paul Craig Roberts has warned us, the neo-cons in Washington have convinced themselves that the USA can win a nuclear war with Russia, and that they should engage Russia in a nuclear war via a first strike.

The moves by the USA/EU/NATO cabal in Ukraine since Russia adeptly arranged to add Crimea to Russia have become increasingly strident, dangerous and reckless, and are constantly raising the threat level against Russia.  Russia is responding in kind, since that sort of threat seems to be the language that the neo-cons understand.  Putin's attempts at diplomatic solutions from February, 2014 and onward, have not been reciprocated by the cabal.  Now it seems that the only exchanges the USA will listen to are old Cold War type threats.

From the late 1990s onward, the USA has been concerned over the increasing political and economic ties of the EU with Russia.  The USA saw itself losing economic and political influence.  With the Ukraine coup and moves in and with the EU, such as sanctions, and provoking EU obstruction of the Russian South Stream gas pipeline project, the USA sought to drive a wedge between the EU and Russia.  The USA has been largely successful in this regard.  However, rather than submitting to the demands of the Western powers, Russia is increasingly turning to China and the other nations in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRIICS for its political and economic ties.  The EU is starting to realize that its political and economic interests are being sacrificed to the ambitions of the USA.

You could ask yourself whether that fence 's main purpose is to keep Mexicans out, or to keep American in.

I suggest Washington or NY or some main target place. Excellent essay "Will the Living Envy the Dead' somewhere in my library on the huge problems of Strontium-90 and other fall out products.

Heading towards the light myself when the times comes... Don't want my 2 and 4 year old kids wandering the streets alone scavaging for radioactive food (when my own stash is gone).

He is moving units to the Arctic. Alaska in range.

Moving units to the edge of Eastern Europe- Kalingrad.

NATO moves, Russia counter-moves. (NATO is the aggressor here).

Russia PLAINLY states NATO interference in the Baltic/Ukraine will be responded to.

Any attempt to re-take Crimea will be defended at High Cost. It costs a lot of Rubles to perform SNAP exercises!

Remember, Russians use a hammer to kill a fly: where Western forces would use a brigade, Russians will use a division! That is to say in their way of thinking, this is a proportionate response.

I do not know how more simply they can say, "Back Off, Bud."

Americans: Do you want to die for your Regime's Imperialism?

It seems that it is the Russians who are doing the dieing for the Regime's Imperialism.  Puutie says that he has no concerns about how many would be killed in his threatened nuclear war to expand his Imperial Rule.

You are a retard or a troll.

Puutie says that he has no concerns about how many would be killed in his threatened nuclear war to defend Russia from US Zio empire.

are you sure?

It costs a lot of Rubles to perform SNAP exercises!

With the current low demand for crude, I thought Russia was swimming in jet fuel.

A bunker deep underground with enough food, potable water and heating fuel to last you a lifetime. Failing that, don't waste your time. When the banksters decide to cash out nowhere on earth will completely escape the effects of nuclear winter---and nothing worth eating will grow in cobalt-salted topsoil.

As we all know by now,  they want to kill as many Russians as possible. Perhaps they believe a good Russian is a dead Russian.  After that they want to kill as many Chinese as possible. Without nukes,  how do you kill a billion plus people as fast as possible?

Puutie is intent upon having Russians killed in order to rule larger territory.  Best effort is to have those dead from the far eastern russia to control news reports reaching Moscow.
