Syria Shoots Down US Drone

Tyler Durden's picture

Perhaps it is purely a coincidence that on the day in which the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (which as profiled earlier is anything but) released several new YouTube clips "confirming" a poison gas chemcial attack by the Assad army had killed 6 people in the country, that several hours later a US drone was shot down by the Syrian military according to CNN, which cites Syria's SANA news agency reported Tuesday.

CNN did not report why the shooting of a US drone flying over someone else's sovereign territory - especially someone who was nearly invaded by the same US two years ago - is news: the outrage here is that the US once continues to assume it is still a unilateral world in which D.C. can invade and treat any country, especially those half way around the world, with impunity and expect zero reprisals (although Jack Lew is finally figuring out that world is changing). We await to find out. In the meantime, this is what CNN did report:

"Syrian Air Defense systems shot down a U.S. UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) north of Latakia Province," the Syrian Arab News Agency's breaking news report said.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The United States has used drones for surveillance and targeted killings, allowing missions to be carried out without risking the lives of U.S. military personnel. But it's not alone. More than 70 countries now have some type of drone, according to The New America foundation.

Moments ago the Pentagon confirmed, via Rueters, that the US had indeed lost contact with an unarmed drone aircraft flying over Syria's Latakia province.  A second U.S. official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said it was unclear whether the aircraft was shot down and said the incident was being investigated.

Reuters also adds that it was the first such incident since the U.S.-led coalition began carrying out air strikes against ISIS last summer.

Then again, perhaps it is not a coincidence, as little by little the summer of 2015 is shaping up to be a replica of what happened two years ago. Because as every self-respecting Keynesian will admit, with Neo-Keynesian economic policy failing around the globe, only war is left as an "option."

Latakia Province is on the Mediterranean Sea bordering Turkey. It was the site of a large Al Nusra rebel offensive which was eventually repelled by the Syrian Army.

"The 2014 Latakia offensive was a rebel offensive in the Latakia Governorate of Syria launched on 21 March 2014 by rebel Islamist groups including Al-Nusra Front, which called the offensive "Anfal",[1] while a coalition of Supreme Military Council rebel groups called the offensive "The Martyrs Mothers".[22] The objectives of the offensive have been stated to be the taking over of all strategic observatories, government villages and the Mediterranean coast.[39] Observers have stated a strategic aim was to force the Syrian army to redeploy forces to Latakia,[40][41] which would relieve pressure on other rebels elsewhere in Syria.[42]They reportedly succeeded in this with government forces being sent from IdlibHama and Aleppo to bolster defenses.[16][17]

During the offensive the Syrian military was joined by Hezbollah, Iraqi Shi'ite militia and Iranian military advisers.[43] After almost two months of fighting, the offensive stalled and eventually petered out, with rebels losing most of their early gains.[21][44] However, the rebels' established strategic bridgehead consisting of the town of Kessab and nearby territory remained.[11] By mid-June a new advance by government forces recaptured the last rebel gains of the campaign, including Kessab.[10]

The offensive, and in particular the degree of Turkish involvement in it, has been widely attributed with the deportation of the native ethnic Armenians of the town of Kessab, who make up 70% of its population, and has been compared with the past Turkish killings of Armenians during the Hamidian massacres and Armenian Genocide."

What is interesting though is Latakia has been used as a major distribution hub for narcotics originating in Afghanistan. From the Turkish Daily News: 1996-12-19. Retrieved 2009-01-01...the PKK is a very rich terrorist organization from its illegal activities, which he said are linked to the mafia and terrorism. He said that the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) usually uses a route from Afghanistan through northern Iraq to Syria's Latakia (Lazkiye) harbor to transport drugs.

Since the US led invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001, the Golden Crescent opium trade has skyrocketed.

IMHO, drones are there to ensure that the drug supply lines are kept open so that the cash from the drug trade can continue to help fund war and terror.

I am suggesting there is more to these stories than the main stream media is bothering to report.

"Jawid Kohestani, a  military affairs expert alleged that narcotics cultivation and transit in Afghanistan have become an international affair now, and the intelligence networks operating in the region in collaboration with some Western countries are selling narcotics in European markets, and the trade is now a whooping $61 billion phenomenon (The UN December, 2011Report)."

And this from a US Embassy cable released by Wikileaks from 2006:

There is a free flow of people, goods, and drugs through the border. Lebanon is a major transit country for drugs in the Mediterranean in part thanks to the porous border with Syria. Opium from Afghanistan and Pakistan, and ecstasy from the Netherlands arrives in the port of Latakia, Syria. Customs control in Latakia is not strict, according to Razzak, who would not expound on the reasons. Once the drugs are off-loaded in Latakia, they are transported via a short drive to Lebanon's northern border where they enter Lebanon unfettered. Razzak explained that it is cheaper to import opium from Afghanistan for USD 200 per kilo, than to grow it in Lebanon at a cost of USD 1,000 per kilo. Iranian heroin is smuggled overland through Iraq and Syria before being trucked across Lebanon's eastern border. http://cables.mrkva.eu/cable.php?id=69658

Israel has kept Lebanon impoverished and in chaos for decades. Heroin going into Lebanon isn't profitable because the people there are broke. Heroin is only sent there by ZATO for social engineering purposes, not for profit. It isn't even very popular in Lebanon. The vast majority of Afghani and Paki heroin goes to Europe and the U.S. - that's where the real heroin bux can be made.

"...Observers have stated a strategic aim was to force the Syrian army to redeploy forces to Latakia..."

This was a minor objective at best, Alaric. Israel and the U.S. want to overfly Northern and Southern Syria with impunity (= violate their airspace). Remember how Israel and the U.S. pissed their pants when Russia started shipping S-300 PMU1 air defense systems to Syria? That's because they can shoot down most aircraft and cruise missiles and can easily take out a $15M Reaper drone. No doubt the U.S. took advantage of the already-stretched-thin Syrian forces to make a move on Latakia, but I can't imagine this was the primary objective. The Northern head-chopper campaign in Latakia and the Southern campaign along the Golan border were both aimed squarely at taking out Syrian air defense sites. U.S.-supplied TOW missiles were delivered just before those two campaigns and al Nusra 'rebels' were trained in Jordan on their use.

Latakia and Tartus are the two Western-most Syrian governorates on the Mediterranean coast. They're both heavily Alawite and were not friendly to the U.S.-backed rebellion. This has forced the U.S. to try (and fail) sending its fake al Nusra headchoppers in to 'take over' both governorates, or at least the air defense sites. About all they were able to do was take out a few Syrian air defense sites in the hills and destroy the equipment. They have since been chased away or killed, and the sites are back in Syrian hands. The lost equipment will hardly matter when Russia starts shipping the far more capable S-400 systems to Syria.

"...What is interesting though is Latakia has been used as a major distribution hub for narcotics originating in Afghanistan..."

Of course - according to Turkey - the experts at drug smuggling, human trafficking and arms smuggling. Illicit traffic through the Turkish ports of Iskenderun and Ceyhan dwarf anything that was ever able to make it out of Latakia and Tartus. Turkish Interior police can be bought for a cut of anything and they are the dominant organized criminals there.

"...the PKK is a very rich terrorist organization from its illegal activities, which he said are linked to the mafia and terrorism. He said that the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) usually uses a route from Afghanistan through northern Iraq to Syria's Latakia (Lazkiye) harbor to transport drugs..."

The Turks would love nothing better than marching every last Kurd into the ovens. They blame everything on the PKK. Calling it a 'very rich terrorist organization' is laughable compared to the massive organized crime networks of the Turkish government headed by their interior ministry and police. The PKK probably smuggles some heroin, but they're hardly able to drive convoys of semi-trailers across Northern Syria to the coast. As a matter of fact, neither does Turkey - they just use military transport aircraft (thanks, NATO) to move their Afghani and Paki heroin to wherever. I simply can't imagine ANY heroin-smuggling route through Syria by anybody - no single group has controlled all the northern border territories for years, and all the groups that do control that territory are trying to kill each other. Drones would be useless - there is no Heroin Highway in Syria. It's possible that there's one in Turkey, but it's already under government-control. No drone surveillance necessary.

"...Since the US led invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001, the Golden Crescent opium trade has skyrocketed..."

What a coincidence - so has the CIA's black budget. I wonder if there's any... No, that would be immoral and illegal.

"...IMHO, drones are there to ensure that the drug supply lines are kept open so that the cash from the drug trade can continue to help fund war and terror..."

Well, the CIA IS the middleman, otherwise they couldn't make much money on it to fund the Arab Springs. They don't rely on either PKK or the Turkish Interior Ministry police to move 'their' heroin and they don't need access to a Mediterranean port. The CIA deals directly with the heroin warlords of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and then flies their heroin out themselves. Who is going to inspect a CIA-operated contract C-130 operating out of Kabul? The only supply lines are the CIA-contracted transport aircraft and wherever they're able to fly in and out of. There is no land route to port cities that needs to be secured with drones.

Drones are used for spying on Syria, period. They gather intelligence to be fed to U.S.-paid head-choppers, or are used to locate Syrian anti-aircraft or missile sites for future destruction. They'll probably be used to assassinate Assad and/or his top henchmen. There's far more money to be made from natural gas pipelines across Syria then you could ever make with heroin. You need to use the big drones - the Predators and Raptors - to cover anything in Syria. Smaller drones don't have the endurance or range to be useful.

Good analysis but did Syria get S300s or S400s?  I have not seen any confirm.  Russians said the S300s that the Ukraien has are now out of date.  Also didn't Russia say they were selling AA missiles to Iran after reneging on S400s?

Your analysis of Lebanon and Syria left out the big white elphant in the room.  Hezboolah.   They have been helping the Syrians including protecting all Syrians including Syrian Christians.   They are formidable fighters.

I think if the USA or others tried to invade Syria then Iran and Hezboolah will be there in bigger numbers along with Russia.  This is why it is ISIS, ISIL, NUSRA and McCain's gang for now.

Supposedly Incirlik (sp?) airbase has always been a big drug tranship location.

No S-400s for sure - that would be a huge deal for Israel and the U.S.

There is some kind of intrigue about the (supposedly six) S-300 systems Syria had contracteed for around 2011. These would have only came with the SA-10 SAMs, not the longer-range SA-20s. Russia said the contract was cancelled and the already-built systems would be destroyed. The Russian ship Nikolai Filchenkov unloaded something in Tartus last year, but it was believed to be just some components, not any complete systems. Subsequent Israeli attacks on the port showed a couple of destroyed S-300 launch trucks, but no signs of them having any kind of missles in the tubes. One of the Syrian SAM sites on the Golan border did have the larger, long-range radar used with the S-300, but it may have just been using it with the older SAM systems. Nobody knows if it was related to the cancelled S-300 contract.

Hezbollah is another whole subject. They're considered terrorists and a mortal enemy by Israel, of course. The U.S. view is mixed. Clapper didn't mention either Iran or Hezbollah on this year's terrorist threat assessment report by the National Intelligence Agency despite having done so for years. One of the member agencies, the Defense Intelligece Agency, still does refer to Hezbollah as a threat. The U.S. screwed the pooch by creating a fake Sunni terrorist group - ISIS - and subseqently losing control of it. The U.S. is forced to sit back while Hezbollah plays a part in fighting ISIS in Syria and Iraq, with it's Iranian backers. The U.S. wants Hezbollah to be an enemy because of their Iranian backing and their support for Assad, but they can't actively go after Hezbollah since they're playing such a big part in containing ISIS. Hezbollah has lost a lot of it's most experienced fighters in Syria and is stretched pretty thin, but they are guaranteed to come home to Lebanon and 'threaten' Israel once again (= not obey Israel's commands or attempts at land theft). Hard to say where that's going. If the U.S. kills Assad, then Hezbollah has no reason to fight in Syria. They will turn their attention back to Israel.

"...I think if the USA or others tried to invade Syria then Iran and Hezboolah will be there in bigger numbers along with Russia..."

The U.S. will never 'invade' Syria. We outsourced to paid mercenaries (Academi/Xe) or head-choppin' al Nusra 'moderate' rebels. The U.S. really doens't have any reason to be in Syria anyways - it's all about our little buddies Israel's and Qatar/GCC's gas and oil pipelines. We'll fight proxy wars for them, but it would be politically fatal for anyone in the U.S. to try to put our troops there. The U.S. will be happy after they assassinate Assad.

We can barely keep U.S. 'advisors' in Iraq - they hate us and don't want us there any more. Iran is more than capable of supplying and supporting them. They'll have Tikrit back in a few days, and I don't think they'll want the U.S.'s help taking back Mosul.

"...Supposedly Incirlik (sp?) airbase has always been a big drug tranship location..."

The only way I could believe that is if Erdogan is getting a cut of the profits. The U.S. wouldn't risk pissing him off and it's not worth the risk. There is no particular need to use Incirlik and risk that strategic location or relations with Turkey. Our bases in the Persian Gulf are closer. The Philippines are not that much further than Incirlik. If it's a CIA operation, then they fly direct - they don't need (and probably wouldn't even use) a U.S. military base.

That´s the principle. So you don´t shoot at drones with S300 but you use shoulder launched.

Or you put them down electronically, like the Russians do. And because of that I think, that Tartus is a drone free zone.

Also, it's about time somebody started shooting down the damn things, it can't be that hard.

Unfortunately it is EXTREMELY hard to shoot the damn things down.  For one, they typically fly at over 30,000 feet - which can't be reached with any arms available to the average person. Secondly they use camouflage paint on the underside which makes it almost impossible to see them in the sky (their relatively small size and the altitude they fly at makes them very hard to see regardless).  If they could be easily detected and shot down you can bet the guys in Yemen, Somalia and Afghanistan would be blowing them out of the sky left and right as they have access to light anti-aircraft missiles in those countries.

Strelas are good to about 5000 ft. - a Strela 2M can get to about 7500 feet. I suppose it's technically possible to take out a big drone with one, but pretty damn unlikely. You would have to be lucky and have the thing fly low and almost straight overhead to have a chance. They're not terribly fast, so speed isn't an issue with regards to Strela capability.

MQ-1 Reaper and MQ-9 Predator drones cruise as high as 24,000 feet but operate around 5 to 10 thousand feet when targeting. They are brought down for point surveillance, but not to within shoulder-fired rocket range if the threat exists. The drone Syria brought down was not doing targeting (that we know of). If it was doing surveilance, it was more likely at 10 - 15 thousand feed. $4M for a Predator and $15M for a Reaper - they try to be careful and not let them be shot down. They wouldn't use smaller/cheaper drones over Syria - they need the big ones because of the distance and endurance required.

I don't think the $4M MQ-1C Grey Eagles (sort of a new-generation Predator) are deployed yet. They have anti-SAM capability and are much more difficult for a shoulder-fired missile to take out. Bonus: they are hack-hardened so 20-year-old Iranian college students can't bring them down with an X-box controller.

Probably by a Syrian jet flying behind and straffing, would be my guess, assuming it's an old Predator a drone is about as hard to shoot down as the Goodyear blimp, it would be a waste of expensive missiles to use one.  Good old anti-aircraft guns do a fine job, too.

Putin cancelled a contract to sell the S-300 to Syria, out of fear Syria might defend itself and shoot down a NATO or Israeli plane.  Iran has a legal case ongoing against Russia for violating the contract.  I have not read anything about any actual reversal or voiding of the legal action

"...Putin cancelled a contract to sell the S-300 to Syria, out of fear Syria might defend itself and shoot down a NATO or Israeli plane..."

That was true a couple of years ago. Just a guess on my part, but I'm thinking that Putin could give a damn about hurting either NATO's or the Israelis' feelings today. In fact, he might just give Syria S-400s just to piss off the U.S.

China has already contracted for a few S-400s and Iran might even get them to satisfy the cancelled S-300 contract from 2007.

Putin has threatened to live up to his existing contract to sell missiles but it has just been hot air.  Putin uses the threat as leverage against the west, in other words he is using Syria and Iran just as Iraq and Libya were used.

Putin has not changed his refusal to sell missiles - he has talked empty words though.

They were NOT voting for a new PM. Nettanyahu's party, Likud, won (I think) a quarter of the seats but that's not enough to guarantee Nettanyahu get's to be PM. Both Likud and the 'second place' party have a chance to form a majority coalition. There's a big faction that broke away from Likud. It's still entirely possible that the 'second place' party and the ex-Likud guys form a coalition. I would say it's still pretty much up in the air. Nettanyahu is not a sure thing by any means even though Likud 'won' more seats than any other single party.

There are many rational Israelis that detest Likud's Nazi-like policies, want to have peace with the Palestinians and don't care to be the most hated nation on earth. Nettanyahu is like McCain - you can't judge the entire population based on one outspoken nutjob in a high political office. Neither Nettanyahu nor McCain represent the majority of little people's views they claim to. Both are certifiably insane and only represent their own little paranoid bizzaro worlds.

From USAToday

"...Under Israel's complicated electoral math, the party with the most seats short of a majority does not necessarily get the prime minister's post, and instead the elections begin a period of negotiations with smaller parties toward building a governing coalition of at least 61 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.

It will be up to the Israeli president, Reuven Rivlin, to decide who to call on to attempt to form the next government. Traditionally that task has gone to the leader of the party that receives the most votes. It could require weeks of political negotiations..."

and

"...Netanyahu's Likud party appeared on track to win 30 seats in the 120-seat Israeli parliament, to 24 for the Zionist Union, Israeli media including The Jerusalem Post reported early Wednesday..."

but the third-place Joint List parties won 14 seats and don't seem likely to form a coalition with Likud. Second-place Zionist Union has 24 seats and didn't concede to Likud and plans to try to form an opposition coalition. As I understand it, Nettanyahu's Likud Party has to dig up another 31 seats minimum to form a government, whereas the opposition (Zionist Union/Joint List) only needs 27 more. I have no idea about anyting in Israeli politics so maybe Likud can easily get the 31 and re-elect Nettanyahu. Maybe not. That's my admittedly hazy understanding of the process. People were voting for members of parliment though, not for the actual Prime Minister. If Likud can find the other 31 seats for a coalition, then they will surely keep Nettanyahu.

They say that Syrian Air Force is using S300 systems (quite modern). Anyway nothing the American Military couldn't deal with.

I really wouldn't count on that kind of thinking in light of the new Russian electronic countermeasures recently seen/reported on - particularly the The Black Sea USS Donald Cook incident that took place last spring:

(from https://futuristrendcast.wordpress.com/2014/11/19/what-frightened-the-us...)

On 10 April 2014, the USS Donald Cook entered the waters of the Black Sea and on 12 April a Russian Su-24 tactical bomber flew over the vessel triggering an incident that, according to several media reports, completely demoralized its crew, so much so that the Pentagon issued a protest [1].

The USS Donald Cook (DDG-75) is a 4th generation guided missile destroyer whose key weapons are Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of up to 2,500 kilometers, and capable of carrying nuclear explosives. This ship carries 56 Tomahawk missiles in standard mode, and 96 missiles in attack mode.

The US destroyer is equipped with the most recent Aegis Combat System. It is an integrated naval weapons systems which can link together the missile defense systems of all vessels embedded within the same network, so as to ensure the detection, tracking and destruction of hundreds of targets at the same time. In addition, the USS Donald Cook is equipped with 4 large radars, whose power is comparable to that of several stations. For protection, it carries more than fifty anti-aircraft missiles of various types.

Meanwhile, the Russian Su-24 that buzzed the USS Donald Cook carried neither bombs nor missiles but only a basket mounted under the fuselage, which, according to the Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta [2], contained a Russian electronic warfare device called Khibiny.

As the Russian jet approached the US vessel, the electronic device disabled all radars, control circuits, systems, information transmission, etc. on board the US destroyer. In other words, the all-powerful Aegis system, now hooked up – or about to be – with the defense systems installed on NATO’s most modern ships was shut down, as turning off the TV set with the remote control.

The Russian Su-24 then simulated a missile attack against the USS Donald Cook, which was left literally deaf and blind. As if carrying out a training exercise, the Russian aircraft – unarmed – repeated the same maneuver 12 times before flying away.

After that, the 4th generation destroyer immediately set sail towards a port in Romania. [Kind of like a dog running away with its tail between its legs . . . .]

The there's this from February 26th:

(from http://www.interferencetechnology.com/russia-unveils-top-5-most-effectiv...)

Russia Unveils Top 5 Most Effective Electronic Warfare Systems 02/26/2015

Russia has announced its top 5 most effective electronic warfare (EW) SystemsKhibiny, Moskva-1, Krasukha-2, Rtut’-BM, and President-S.

The Khibiny is a small torpedo shaped container that is mounted on wingtips of aircraft that increases the survival rate of aircrafts by 25-30 percent. After the aircraft has received an alert of a missile attack, the Khibiny covers the aircraft with a radio-electronic protective hood. This hood prevents an enemy missile from affecting the aircraft and diverts it elsewhere. [NOTE - Based on what reportedly happened with the Aegis system on the USS Donald Cook the Khibiny system does a lot more than outlined in the above paragraph]

The Moskva-1 is a passive radar system that allows Russian troops to receive data and see airborne targets from 400 km away without emitting any signals of its own, making it invisible to the enemy. The Moskva-1 scans the airspace and determines if objects are missiles, or aircraft and then transmits data to its command post. The operator at the command post will then decide if the object should be destroyed or not.

The Krasukha-2 is a ground electronic warfare device that is programmed to protect the air defense, ground facilities, and troops on the march.

“PTRC Iskander and other similar complexes are quite defenceless on the march. Krasukha enables them to easily reach the given destination and deploy the combat crew. Once Krasukha notices the enemy AWACS, it affects its radar with an interfering radiation within a radius of 250 km. Such jamming radio-electronic suppression makes precise weapon guidance impossible,” according to a report..

The Krasukha-2 has another feature in which it can influence the brain of fired missiles and change its target, which results in the missiles hitting false targets.

The Rtut’-BM is one of the most advanced electronic warfare systems and it is designed to protect soldiers and equipment from artillery fire, in case artillery has proximity fuses.

“In order to cause irreparable damage to manpower and weapons, proximity fuse must explode at the height of 3-5 meters. Rtut’ affects proximity-fused ammunition making it explode at a safe height, which keeps the troops intact,” according to product information.

The Rtut’-BM can protect an area of over 123 acres and can also destroy frequencies that enemies use for communication.

The President-S is an optical-electronic suppression device that can protect aircraft from destruction during missile attacks. During testing, missiles were fired from 1000 meters away and none of them reached the target aircraft. Electronic interference created by the President-S complex caused every single missile to deviate away from its intended target.

Beside deploying these systems on its own you can bet that if the shit hits the fan that Russia is going to provide one or more of these systems to countries that may be threatened by "the West" (AKA - the USA and its allies) - Syria, Iran, etc.  It won't be an easy ride for "the West" (ahem - "the international community") if things get serious . . . . .

Would I was only guiding the drone been a defense at Nuremberg?

Guess what? Nuremberg was a FARCE!!! While it was going on the Khazarians were raping, starving and generally exterminating MILLIONS of innocent German children, women and men. More Germans were killed AFTER the war, and WHILE the "Nuremberg Trials" were going on, than the supposed number of Khazarians "exterminated" in the Nazi concentration camps . . . . .

When US General George Patton had administrative control over part of Germany after the war he said something like; 'The Germans are an honorable and dignified race but the Khazarians (he used a different, more common, term) as a race are disgusting and dirty in their manner and habits [he was on record saying they would live literally like pigs in the German homes they "appropriated" from German citizens, defecating on the floors, etc.].  At times I think we fought the wrong people in this war . . . .'.   Again, I am paraphrasing here but the gist of this is pretty close to the actual quotes from Patton.  IMHO he was a true American hero.

It was not long after making those comments that Patton fell out of favor with Eisenhower and the "boys back in Washington" and not long after that he was killed in a controversial auto accident.

P.P.S. - It's funny (NOT) how the USA has routinely violated the same "international laws" around the world since WWII that the Germans literally got hung for at Nuremberg.  The whole thing makes me sick . . . .
