Violent Clashes Break Out Next To New ECB Headquarters In Frankfurt As Thousands Protest Austerity: Live Webcast

Tyler Durden's picture

It's not just Greece which is protesting the utter lack of reforms enabled by the ECB known as "austerity" - as of today so is Germany itself with the so-called #Blockupy movement. According to local media reports, the start of anti-austerity rallies in Frankfurt coincided with the European Central Bank opening its new headquarters, whose occupants are now besieged by tens of thousands of protesters, so perhaps #OccupyQ€ would have been more appropriate. Police said they expect around 10,000 anti-capitalist protesters, marching under the banner of leftist alliance Blockupy, to attend the rally, with a march through the city planned for later in the evening. The result is what according to a police spokesman "is one of the biggest deployments ever in the city."

As the photos below shows, several police cars have been set on fire, with windows being smashed and demonstrators throwing stones at police ahead of the massive demonstration on Wednesday, and as riots break out across Frankfurt even as thousands of police respond with water cannon, pepper spray and mass arrests.

Authorities say at least one officer has been injured by a stone hurled by an activist, near the city's opera house.

Organizers have accused the police of sparking the violence, saying they set up a "civil war type scenario" to provoke demonstrators. "This is not what Blockupy planned," spokesman Hendrik Wester told German news agency DPA.

Video footage has shown riot police running through the city, with at least one protester being dragged away.

Chairman of the German police union (GdP), Oliver Malchow, says the violence has gone far enough.

"We're talking about serious crimes here," he told broadcaster n-tv.

"The term 'protest' doesn't fit in this case," he said.

Activists are targeting the European Central Bank (ECB) as a symbol of capitalism, as well as over its part in restrictive austerity measures in financially-troubled countries such as Greece.

Meanwhile, around 100 guests, including ECB President Mario Draghi, are expected to attend the opening of the ECB's new headquarters.

Authorities had erected a security zone around the 185-meter skyscraper, putting up barricades and barbed wire in preparation for the protest action.

A spokeswoman told news agency AFP "it is one of the biggest deployments ever in the city," saying they expected the majority of demonstrators to be peaceful.

But they believed some violence-prone protesters could use the crowds as cover, and had placed helicopters and water cannons on standby.

A special train has been chartered by organizers to bring 800 people from Berlin, and 60 buses from 39 European countries are also heading to the financial hub.

According to Frankfurt police, seven police vehicles were set on fire, adding "there were peaceful demonstrators and there were criminals also here this morning." The police said it deployed "upper-mid 4 figure number" of officers, but declined to comment on deployment of gas.

As for the ECB, demonstrators said they want to blockade the billion-dollar building, in an attempt to disrupt what they describe as "capitalist business as usual."

A clip of the police using water cannon on protesters and some of the highlights of today's protest so far:

The ECB, along with the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund, are part of the so-called "troika" monitoring countries' compliance with the conditions of bailout loans.

These include lowering government spending and other debt-reduction methods, which have been blamed for increasing unemployment and stunting economic growth.

The ECB says it plans to remain "fully operational" despite the action, with some employees working from home. Because buying bonds only requires a computer stroke from anywhere in the world.

awesome. Stupid leftists think they are fighting capitalism.  True capitalism can only exist in the absence of government. They are protesting a government agency, thereforce they are fighting government (or socialism/communism/facism/corporatism).

The government steals their money and doesn't give enough back and somehow thats the fault of private business?  Austerity is a term that refers to government policy.

This can't end well. Most, if not all, Western Government debt is still increasing despite so-called "austerity". It needs real austerity to do anything about that so in that sense "They ain't seen nothing yet".

The real target should not be austerity but a corrupt and broken system which needs REAL reforms not more QE to further enrich the Banksters.

Whilst I understand the sentiment the ECB doesn't make the decisions about austerity, it is a mere implementation tool and energy could be more wisely and optimally expended. Unfortunately here in the good ole EU we've all been disarmed hence the following is a nigh impossible option, however desirable it may appear to some. I was waiting to see which two idiots would first quote Thatcher against socialism, and claim this is not capitalism. So the gold and silver medals go to the first two comments.

There cannot be a capitalism without a government, there has never been and there will never be.

"Capitalist production and exchange are inherently "anarchistic". Individuals, each in pursuit of his or her private interests, cannot possibly take "the common interest" -- even of the capitalist class -- into account in their actions. Thus, the capitalist State has also to function as a vehicle through which the class interests of the capitalists are expressed in all fields of production, circulation and exchange. It plays an important role in regulating competition, in regulating the exploitation of labor (through, for example, legislation on minimum wages and maximum hours of employment) and generally in placing a floor under the processes of capitalist exploitation and accumulation. The State must also play an important role in providing "public goods" and social and physical infrastructures which are necessary prerequisites for capitalist production and exchange but which no individual capitalist would find it possible to provide at a profit. And the State inevitably becomes involved in crisis management and in countering the tendency for the rate of profit to fall . State intervention is necessary in all of these respects because a system based on individual self-interest and competition cannot otherwise express a collective class interest.?

Every single part of that argument applies equally to orthodox Marxism, anarcho-socialism, and anarcho-communism.

While it is a historical fact there has never been non-state capitalism, it is equally true that what you are calling capitalism has little in common with what others are calling capitalism... everyone is aiming at straw targets, most especially David Harvey, never thought I'd see him quoted around here. His analysis is entirely one-sided and historical, though of dubious accuracy - as with virtually all Marxist scholarship, it's just another method of history through which facts and opinions are made to support ideological conclusions - a narrative about history, but not a particularly accurate one.

PS: I like to do the same - wait eagerly to see which fool will label a state-capitalist totalitarian authoritarian oligarchy/dictatorship as socialist or even communist. Or label a gens or clan a tribe or nation, or anywhere a democracy (arithmetocracy).

Wed, 03/18/2015 - 14:32 | 5903019 macroeconomist
macroeconomist's picture

Just like every part of your analysis is a one-sided and historical account of socialism, which many calling themselves socialist condemn (State-capitalist Stalinisim and its variants I mean)

Just like those like you will repeatedly sing the same song against the possibility of a collective-cooperative society referring to the inherently selfish and self-preserving nature of humanity, those like Harvey are right to point out that a system based on the supposed merits of self-interest in which capital owners possess the economic power is destined to evolve into this crony capitalism. And he is not aiming at straw targets, as 98% of the world is crony capitalist and you cannot find a single counter example to that, while experiences of socialisms are very few when compared. If someone is aiming at straw targets, it is more you rather than Harvey.

The praxeology of Austrian economics is as low as any scholarship can get so I could not care less about what these charlatans call capitalism. At the end of the day, the level if illiteracy here is at such a level that they call Obama a socialist. I recommended a few times to those idiots that they don't say this anywhere in Europe if they do not want to make fools of themselves.

The problem is that even if the state does not exist in early stages in an anarcho capitalist system, as capital owners accumulate larger amounts of wealth, they will collude, merge, and form a state to protect class interests. This is not only intuitive but also historically what happened. So as long as such vast amounts of wealth accumulation is prevented (as in an anarcho socialist participatory-cooperative system) the same mechanics need not apply and such an oppresive state with class interests need not emerge. So your argument that "every single part of my analysis applies to anarcho socilaism" is not correct.

The problem with socialism is...

you've been conditioned to think its impossible.

Socialist countries have overtaken America by the dozen on issues like quality of life, average literacy and longevity.

Anyone who thinks socialism is a bad word to me is an intellectual relic of the past. These Europeans are light years, yes I said light years, ahead of the American public in their sophistication on these matters.

They understand the role of a society, that society and social concerns have a place. We only understand barren, conflicted individualism and striving competition of all-vs-all. We are the most easily atomized, separated, and distracted from anything like a social concern. Here you see Europeans living in a country with a quality of living that dwarfs our own (I have lived for years in both places) and they STILL protest, because that is the level of their development in terms of individual and social conscience and consciousness. We are far, far below them and that is why our country is a fascist-capitalist empire which anyone else would be disgraced to live in.

Every destructive force in the world is being labeled or directed at capitalism as the real culprit. Be it the protestors or the police saying it, it really doesn't matter. What matters is what people believe and unfortunately the principle issue is that they believe whatever they are told. These protestors are but another useful tool.

i agree. i cannot personally see how fractional reserve of pure fiat banking controlled by some heirarchy is at all compatible with true competition - it is the antithesis... maybe people are tired of "competing" for the fewer and fewer crumbs dropped under the "masters" table.. i reckon commodity money and decentralized truly private banks (or matresses / cookie jars) is the moral way to go... the rule of law needs implemented also to confiscate the stolen booty and somehow either destroy it or distribute it at reset.. the adoption of commodity money at this point, when the same cartel have just looted the worlds major stockholds of said commodities is not good logic - they also used their ill gotten gains to "purchase" "title" to the worlds natural resources, including mines. unless these two points (theft and false claim) are addressed, then adoption of commodity money simply herds the sheep right back into the masters pens

the modern banking systems are the epitome of false weights and measures

People insisting that there exists some "pure", "primordial" form of capitalism, which is somehow better and preferrable to what we're actually seeing -- sound to me a lot like Communists who used to say "What you're seeing is not true communism. True communism doesnt work like this, it actually looks completely different." This of course was the mantra of all marxist/communist apologists during the 20th century.

Take some goddamn responsibility for the consequences of the ideas you support, and the forms that they have morphed into. This is capitalism, whether you reject it as such on the basis of some wonderful qualifying schema you may have. The endgame of capitalism is that monopolists and "monied powers" eventually take over the government, fusing market and state. And thats what they've done. Don't get around that with an insistance on conceptual purity -- nobody cares about your purebred  unicorn in-a-perfect-world capitalism.

If nothing else, these weak arsed protests are boring me to tears.

ghost, not enough violence is the problem, and not enough target selection for the violence- effective revolution in modern countries is not about protest violence - it is about very limited eliminations..mass protests are for the collapse after select targets are removed.

Very well said.

Could not have said it better myself. All we have to do to make things a lot better is take out about 1000 of these tyrants who are shitting all over the world and the people And keep shooting the new ones until you get good, freedom-loving ones in power. And if that never happens, then enjoy the shooting. We have the tyrants so rediculously outnumbered that it's a farce. 800 pound gorhilla in the room.

The solution is simple, it just takes some big balls to start it up.

Cocked and locked.

The single greatest advancement of the police state in America would be the successful or even attempted assassination of Obama. The constitution would be ended along with EVERYTHING we could perceive as freedom. Only a fool thinks that anything will be resolved through violence. Violence is their goal. Just as economic collapse is, as it creates fear and chaos in a society that is primarily motivated by concerns of security derived through state control. The apparent absence of order and rule of law will aggregate power in the name of tyranny. Name ONE assassination that has advanced freedom.

This is a game that requires the gradual depletion of self reliance and simultaneous state dependency. It cannot be destroyed by the direct hand of government. It must be done through back channels, through the Alinsky approach of collapse from within, from constantly increasing demands for entitlements from a state starved of resources by greedy capitalists.

What are these protests about? Austerity? Really? Austerity for whom? Those holding their hands out for MOAR entitlements? Are there protestors out there demanding lower taxes? Less government intervention in business and commerce?

NO! ONLY MOAR FOR ME!

An American protest story: in sept 2010 we conservatives marched on DC, i was there with them..the MSM said it was a small turn out, they lied. the msm reported on racists being there - they lied, there was no violence, the park police stated we left the mall and capital in good shape with little litter. we had speeches and we waved signs and the media said ho hum all racist. a few congressmen came and talked about things that they then never did.

my point is in america those who see injustice and act civil get laughed at and lied about, while the approved protest class be come violent and get plenty of MSM face time.."burn it down burn this MF down"

why protest? it is as useful as voting in usa..I will never attend these events again..it does not move the powers that be one inch.

ps..the majority at that protest were protesting the FED's actions these people understood something was very wrong with our money system..not ave tv watching dupes.

Protests accomplish nothing positive. They only reinforce fear and insecurities in a population seemingly begging for MORE police control.

We EFFECTIVELY protest through our economic activity. Think about it. Everything our government does is not directly about freedom or liberty, it is about MONEY. Taxation, regulation CONTROL is exercised through the control of MONEY. What we buy, how we spend MONEY. Money that is the direct reflection of the ownership of our productive efforts. How we spend, how we "invest" our production is EVERYTHING. This is not hard to figure out, it is hard to DO, because they have figured on every weakness, every human response to front run and manipulate us. They CONTROL us, and if there is a public demonstration it will ultimately serve ONLY them.

So lets just stop it. Lets put our MONEY where our mouth is. They know we do not want to sacrifice, or even delay gratification. they will "loan" us the money to buy that TV or car or house or phone or any piece of crap, because they know we NEED it. They KNOW we will choose destruction before construction, before actually thinking and working for our own true benefit. They know our emotional needs, they create our emotional needs, and they enable their fulfillment. The only effective means of fixing this is to do what has not been done. Sacrifice OUR immediate needs for our future needs. Stop borrowing money. Stop asking government for ANYTHING.
