Bitcoin Scammers Run Off With $12 Million: “Going to The Caribbean… Hope You Guys Understand”

For the casual observer the underground online marketplace, often referred to as the DarkNet, seems to resemble the lawlessness of the Wild West. Over the last several years millions of dollars worth of digital crypto-currencies have been stolen, oftentimes by the very operators of the web sites tasked with managing the online digital “hot” wallets of its users. (A “cold” wallet is used to store crypto-addresses on your own Flash drive or can be written down on a piece of paper).

The most recent example comes to us from the “Evolution” Darknet, which according to a report from Crytpo Coins News shut down their web server and ran off with $12 million in user bitcoins:

Users of the popular darknet marketplace Evolution were disappointed over the last couple of days as the site has been unavailable. Spotty access is normally unsurprising for the market, and there is a long list of alternative URLs. But none of them have worked, so it appears the site is down.

Evolution has become much more active in the wake of the arrest and subsequent conviction of Ross Ulbricht, the operator of the first major darknet marketplace, Silk Road. Its operators do not have the same philosophical drive as did the Silk Road operator.

A user or users operating under the name Verto and Kimble appear to be the culprits responsible for transferring the funds out of the Evolution network. But the story doesn’t end there.

The operators of Evolution did leave a note for their users letting them know what happened to the money. As you might expect, the $12 million in bitcoins that have been disappeared will be shared among the former admins of Evolution, with the operator of the site claiming he’s headed to the Caribbean to enjoy his profits:

Due to unforseen events I decided to close down Evolution Marketplace. We want to thank you guys for you effort and help making this the most profitable and popular marketplace. This wasn’t an easy decision but due to other marketplaces getting shut down and the forum going downhill I decided to cut my ties and exit with an eight figure profit. The millions from evo will be divided up amongst the mods a few admin and members. Since this is such an abundance of money I may consider buy ins from former evo members in exchange for 1k bitcoinis. I’ll be around around for a short period of time before permanently moving to the caribbeans, I hope you guys understand.

Crypto-currencies like Bitcoin are gaining popularity across the world, but with the anonymity the provide the entire system remains open to unscrupulous brokers.

For those utilizing bitcoin and other crypto-currencies it is strongly recommended that they keep their funds in “cold wallet” storage to avoid broker shut downs and theft of “hot wallets” that are stored online.

Your balls also bear no counterparty risk. Yet, if you hand them to someone else for custody, you risk an unpleasant outcome. This is exactly what happened in this case. If you don't hold your private keys you don't reaaly own "your" bitcoin.

Yes, I can't understand too why people can leave their bitcoins unsecured outside their personal wallets. The strength of bitcoins is exactly in private possession; anything else is inherently vulnerable to fraud or theft. If I buy bitcoins on exchange I hurry to transfer them to my wallet if not managed automatically.

For a TRUE copy of 'THE BOOK', go to the website 'voodoo-magick-scuba-in-aruba' dot com. My sister's roommate's boyfriend makes $78.32 an hour mining a secret stash of forbidden knowledge simply by letting his computer act as a wealth-generating device. But....But..... But where are all of the BitCoin Tards who used to populate ZH?

Cool logic employed there bro. Say, when you are mugged by a gang of hoodlums, who beat you into a bloody pulp in the gutter before stealing the $400USD you had in your pocket, do you shake your fist at the USD or the thieves?

Any bitcoin I hold is accessable only by myself, which can't be said for any fiat I hold. That said, were I to transfer some of my bitcoin to an anonymous darknet drug market wallet to buy drugs, I am vulnerable to theft or scams. This situation is akin to buying drugs from the streets or participating in any black (aka free) market, but I guess the sort of person hating on bitcoin without even a basic understanding of it is likely to be the same close-minded flop who has never tried drugs, so I might be losing you there.

I would love to delve into the mind of the average bitcoin-hating zerohedger. That their zeal in decrying an inherently corrupt fiat monetary system is equalled by their aversion to an ingenious new system with the ability to supplant corrupt fiat systems (and so so fucking much more), leaves me equally fascinated and dismayed.

So you don't agree with this particular attempt to subvert government monopoly on currency, I can accept that, but why the antipathy?

A cynic might posit that the antipathy and fear of bitcoin in the zerohedge community stems from bitcoin's success being perceived incongruous with the zh pipedream of gold becoming the new global currency and all phyz holders waking up one morning as the new 1%. But then wtf do cynics know?

When the first Carrington Event of the so-called 'modern age' happens (and IT WILL), you will try to 'log on' and find a dead computer and no power to operate the SHITCOIN 'purse' thingie.

It'll be a REAL BITCH when you run out of food and fuel, you know; as your 'modern' flat and office cool down to outside temperature, and the food in the refigerator starts to spoil, and the toilet doesn't flush (washing your shit away) because the electicity has FAILED.

Mommy's basement will look REAL GOOD about then. It's warm and dry, and you can relax (and take the 'nerdpack' out of your shirt pocket, as well. Those unsightly INK STAINS on your chest soon will be a distant memory as you re-learn how to TRY to support your sorry, interdependent ASS). All the 'memes' and cutesy 'abbreviations' like 'WTF' and 'LOL' will have NO MEANING then, as your gut rumbles with hunger, and you shiver in the cold.

YOU are a fucked-up CITY BOI, I suppose, 'nailgunnin'.

I'm not a 'cynic'. I'm a REALIST.

SHIT HAPPENS.

You can't possibly try to play against those who COMPLETELY control the game by using the tools that they have provided.

You never thought about this aspect of REALITY, though.

Don't try to overcomplicate the matter. This is your FIRST mistake.

HE WHO DIES WITH THE MOST TOYS...
Is just as dead as the one who has the second-most.

Da water be pumped from da ground / reservoir somehow.

Usually with electricty from da power station which most likely is not protected from a solar flare, nor is da transmission lines, transformers, etc.

Unless one has a hand pumped well, pumps water into a jug, pours water into water tank in toilet then flushes will toilet work for long.

Much like with the new efficient hot water heaters, people are losing an extra 40 to 50 gallons of emergency water if things really go pear shaped.

Yawn , stil pushing the same old Carrington Event drivel I see.

Modern computers are resistant to such events these days. Satellites would be affected but I guess nobody told you that over 90% of data communications are now done over fibre optic which is not affected by electromagnetic interference. Even multiple global EMP's would not disrupt the bitcoin network.

So, in conclusion, you're all too fucking stupid (with few exceptions) to understand Bitcoin, much like that Senator that never sent an email, but is involved with technical governance.

Yes nidstyles mnewn and many others here are semi-anarchists. When the democrats are in, they are anarchist wannabes, when the republicans are in, they are statist fags.

As an actual anarchist, I find them cute; middle class white kids conflating the legitimate political philosophy of anarchism with an alternate meaning of anarchy, chaos and disorder. This allows worker ants to feel that they are rebelling in their slavish 9-5 lives while listening to shit bands like the sex pistols (Johnny Rotten implores you to vote you know!). If any of you anarcho wannabes are situated near Sydney Australia you should check out Jura Books, an "anarchist" library which last I checked had a poster on its door demanding the gov to increase spending on TAFE (aussie vocational college).

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

"So...like a false Bitflag or sumpin?"

Yeah, pretty much that. Several people had pointed out very early on that it was at a minimum a scam based on the people involved, but one of the more astute warnings drew parallels to how the illegal credit card trade was penetrated by law enforcement in US, and that the people behind Evo seemed to be following the exact same formula. I wouldn't be the least surprised if it was a data gathering expedition by the Feds.

Also, in case anyone has missed it. it's extremely obvious TOR has been compromised for some time, so if you're playing with dark markets and thinking TOR alone will protect you, you're setting yourself up for a bust.

I feel sorry for them (the victims, the marks, whatever one wants to call them) their hearts may be in the right place but their heads are up their ass.

If you can't touch it, you don't possess it, whether its a credit or what you think is real in an account (Cyprus anyone?) or a bit of data, you're relying on something beyond your control to "make it happen" or someones interpretation of a law, requiring a few moar "bits of something".

FØNESTAR ~ First of all... Welcome back...

2nd...

I use whatever currency is expedient for the purpose...

EXCEPT

When it comes to 'savings' &/or 'long term storage'...

I'll acknowledge that I don't have anything against using bitcoin for transactions [whereby, my timeline would be within, say, a 90 day time period]...

But as for LONG TERM... Well ~ all I can say is that I vividly remember you TEARING IT UP around here when the bitcoin craze was happening... One of the last things I recall reading was about how you were buying physical SILVER back then too [ostensibly trying to portray yourself as a bottom ticker of PHYZ which merged with a bitcoin blowoff top]... That was when silver was around $30 & it was around April because I remember I was grilling your ass for NOT paying taxes on your bitcoin profits [which the IRS &/or Canadian equivalent should be on your ass about]... So go figure the year based on that...

Notwithstanding quantifying the eventual ARBITRAGE differential... It would appear that your HYPE was timed poorly [IN BOTH CASES]...

So fine... You SUCK as a market 'timer'... Now ~ Convince me to make BITCOIN the storage vault of my LONG TERM WEALTH storage...

Its funny, because when ZH kept trying to beat Bitcoin down, apparently its worth enough for someone to steal. Sense the irony there?

If it wasn't worth anything, nobody would FUCKING STEAL IT.

Try to let that sink in.

Also, remember all those bank robberies and people getting mugged for their wallets, because it happens to cash, too.

But who am I kidding, this is ZH, the finest collection of OOK-OOKing cavemen that have ever owned computers, screeching out into the digital jungle, while shouting "IF I CANNA HOLD IT IN MY HAND, IT ISN'T MONEY".

Oh the fucking irony in that one, eh? What do you think your bank balance is, a pile of coins in a safe deposit box? (Answer - a virtual representation that uses electrons on a bank server.)

Nice theory.  Until the owners of the website run off with 12 million and the darknet has no recourse.

I do not think bitcoin is quite the "perfect" monetary unit as many gamers claim.  There is greed and sociopathology rampant among the tech savy/darknet. No different than Fall Street.  I do not trust any asset I cannot occupy or hold in my hand basically.

Gamers and Cloud? surfers are just playing into the long term  virtual currency plan.  There is nothing about bitcoin that is not corruptable.  And on a very simple level it seems.  "Show me the profits from theft and I am outa here"  Thanks Mr./Ms. tech frigging savy.

Much as I adore the tech revolution.  My wealth/family security will never, ever ever ever be assigned to a "cloud".  Nor some bitcoin that seems to be regularly stolen .  Playing into the desire for bankers 000/111  creation of monetary life beyond any reality.

Poof.  it is gone.  And "thanks very much I hope you understand."

Then don't store your coins on a cloud server, duh. Or in Escrow, or on exchanges. Almost all widely reported Bitcoin "hacks" are of coins stored in wallets where the owners don't have access to the private keys; it's the equivalent of complaining that your gold was stolen when you swore you had it safe and sound in those LBMA vaults.

If someone were to burst into my apartment right now, snatch up as many valuables (PMs included) as they could and make their way to Mexico, I would have zero recourse for restitution. Conversely, if someone swiped my laptop with an encrypted wallet, I'm out a laptop, but I could recover the coins in seconds from a wallet seed or backup.

Bitcoin is a young protocol with a LOT of flaws, but your complaints display your nescience on the topic.
