Doing God’s Work – San Francisco Church Sprays Homeless People with Water to Keep Them Away

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

I’ve covered the plight of the homeless in America in recent years as another manifestation of the erosion of decency, empathy, morality and kindness throughout much of our culture. As a society, we’ve become increasingly obsessed with youth, materialism, power and short-termism, tossing aside wisdom, real joy, soulfulness and connectivity. One of the symptoms of this unfortunate transformation can been seen in how we treat the least fortunate and most vulnerable around us, particularly the homeless (see: In 33 U.S. Cities, Feeding the Homeless Has Been Criminalized).

Of all the institutions you’d hope to take a different stance toward the weak and struggling, places of worship would be at the top of the list. Not so for Saint Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco, which admittedly sprays sleeping homeless people with water in order to keep them away.

From CBS:

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — KCBS has learned that Saint Mary’s Cathedral, the principal church of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, has installed a watering system to keep the homeless from sleeping in the cathedral’s doorways.

The cathedral, at Geary and Gough, is the home church of the Archbishop. There are four tall side doors, with sheltered alcoves, that attract homeless people at night.

The shower ran for about 75 seconds, every 30 to 60 minutes while we were there, starting before sunset, simultaneously in all four doorways. KCBS witnessed it soak homeless people, and their belongings.

The water doesn’t really clean the area. There are syringes, cigarette butts, soggy clothing and cardboard. There is no drainage system. The water pools on the steps and sidewalks.

A neighbor who witnessed the drenching told KCBS, “I was just shocked, one because it’s inhumane to treat people that way. The second thing is that we are in this terrible drought.

Jennifer Friedenbach, executive director of the Coalition on Homeless said, “It’s very shocking, and very inhumane. There’s not really another way to describe it. Certainly not formed on the basis of Catholic teachings.”

A cathedral staff member confirmed to KCBS the system was installed, perhaps a year ago, to deter the homeless from sleeping there.

KCBS has also learned from a review of city permit records that the system was installed illegally, and may violate water use regulations.

Drought or no drought, when if comes to spraying the homeless, there seems to be plenty of water available.

Speechless.

YOU FUCKING LUCIFERIAN HYPOCRITE JLee2027

You take ONE VERSE...absolutely OUT OF CONTEXT and use it to justify YOUR INIQUITY???

What a FUCKING PRETENDER.

Enjoy your path on the road to your destruction.

James 2:14-17

14 What [doth it] profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be [ye] warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what [doth it] profit?

17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

I John 3:17-18

17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels [of compassion] from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

Romans 12:20

Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

Christ took care of the physical needs of those which he encountered before addressing the spiritual. Hungry people are not receptive to hearing the Gospel.

Even in the Lord's prayer the physical needs are addressed before the spiritual. Give us this day our...note OUR...daily bread.

Your self centeredness exposes you as a PRETENDER.

There are atheists who I will hold in higher esteem because of their WORKS.

You build a entire theology on ONE SCRIPTURE which VIOLATES EVERY PRINCIPLE which Christ taught.

You can hose them on even numbered days between 2am and 4am. Should you wish to hose outside of these hours you must apply for a permit on odd Monday's between 9 and 10am.

The only reason the I am posting the following is it seems that the Church which claims to follow Christ's teaching is apparently going to go to hell as the following words are said to have come from Jesus:

I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me.' The righteous will then answer him, "When, Lord, did we ever see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink?

When did we ever see you a stranger and welcome you in our homes, or naked and clothe you? When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?'  The King will reply, "I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these followers of mine, you did it for me!'  "Then he will say to those on his left, "Away from me, you that are under God's curse! Away to the eternal fire which has been prepared for the Devil and his angels!  I was hungry but you would not feed me, thirsty but you would not give me a drink; I was a stranger but you would not welcome me in your homes, naked but you would not clothe me; I was sick and in prison but you would not take care of me.'  Then they will answer him, "When, Lord, did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and we would not help you?'

The King will reply, "I tell you, whenever you refused to help one of these least important ones, you refused to help me.

What a bunch of C***s, if God had intended homeless people to be sprayed he would have attached a rain cloud to each of them.

Caring about your fellow man is obviously not a prerequisite to work for the church, and ability to use Nulandism is, if you can say "F*ck the homeless" you've got the job. Welcome brother.

If the church wants to get rid of homeless people, maybe the answer would be to help them not to be homeless and help them out of poverty. Doesn't the church collect money and items on behalf of the poor anyway, Or is that used to line someone else's pockets?

And yes, Organized religion is typically merely one step ahead (morally) than is government. Competing forces though...Apples to Oranges.

For the typical individual (think diversity bitch)....Government has been by far the most hostile force, the most destructive and complicit anti-human Liberty 'player'.

If you consider deeply enough, it has been 'governments' in their actual nature and practice which have pimped humanity into a position of cataclysmic, quite likely for billions indeed existential, "change".

I am sorry to go on, but the way homeless people are treated in our society is shameful. It is something that really touches my heart strings.

Here in Australia are several proactive charities that are really doing God's work. Here is one - http://swags.org.au - please take a quick look.

How much did the church pay for this shower system and why was that money diverted from helping the needy.

There are times whem I am truely ashamed to be a human being and this is just another illustration of fraudulant compassion disguised as caring.

NOPE!

The churches actually filled in when the garbage Deloitte stiffed people on unemployment checks after the subprime collapse.   Some of the churches also help foreigners learn English (Catholic Churches, Baptist Churches...)
The churches have filled in when people couldn't get food.

You have to look at NORMAL people and how they handle things, the US isn't like what you see on t.v.

And I don't know what Australia is like.  But a lot of these "homeless" people are tweakers.  Sometimes they're dangerous.
Also, ask a tweaker landlord (by default) if they would provide shelter to a homess person.
They have access to shelter and don't use them.

Professionals have provided meals for the homeless.  Some white dudes who think they're being helpful by pulling tweakers into the hood, I hate to say this but it's not safe?

When I was in San Francisco, I was looking for a charity to give to children over the holidays.  Well if you're there, the firestation does take donations for childrens' christmas gifts.

Let them eat ... water

Actually, not seeing a big problem with this. The actual practice is far less severe than intimated by the headline of the article. The headline had me picturing priests and nuns turning a fire hose on the homeless and washing them off the sidewalks around the church.

And btw - any church goer offended by the practice must realize they are automatically making it ok for the homeless to set up camp in the church goer's "backyard".... needles, refuge, poop, and all.

That's why I would never in a million years pay what they're asking for on a property.  Not to mention, the properties in San Francisco are horribly maintained with rat infestation, mold, mildew, chipping paint... that's why they have to sell it to wealthy EB-5 investors who are nieve to the actual condition of the former crack/meth/heroine infested properties.

Tyler,

I used to live in SF and the homeless there were not safe.  Some have aggressively gone out of their way to steal from normal people.

The Church is a church, not a state sponsored ward.  They DO help people.  You were not there.   I've seen them provide badly needed English lessons (right there is a big merciful huge act of kindness), gave their inner city minority kids activities to stay out of trouble (soccer, swimming, music lessons, art, etc.).

In Los Angeles, South Central is full of churches for blacks.  What population is growing in Los Angeles?  BLACK PROFESSIONALS.  Again, families taking advantage of church to keep their grown babies on the right track, yes they hold prayer services at each others houses (non-Jehovah).... again, better alternative to them socializing by smoking crack on a violence infested street so they don't mess up their lives.

Some Church members in the Bay Area have been very good about helping people find a GOOD housemate because the rents are excessively expensive out there.

In a lot of ways, the Churches have innovated to enrich the lives of people in need.   I'm not a fan of neocon self righteous politics myself, but I can show you a few congregations whose members have worked to help people.

Sorry people can't deal with the druggies.  Churches often consist of normal everyday people who don't have the training or means to handle those types of problesm.  Sorry- We can all pray for the homeless.

But Korean women in a rough part of LA chased a scary gang out of their noodle house restaurant by throwing pitchers of ice cold water at the gangstas  when everyone else was frozen scared.  It worked and nobody was hurt.

The tweakers in SF are not easy to deal with.  The tweakers in Hollywood and Santa Monica are downright dangerous (we haven't gotten to the crackheads on Skid Row yet)and it's worse when you have a shady LAPD or SMPD to fuss with.

The trouble with San Francisco is that the cops let the bums run over the city (a lot of stupid things that happen in San Francisco would never be permitted by the NYPD)- the SF Cops don't and sometimes can't (by law) do much about the homeless.

???

Obviously homeless have many faults and problems, particularly since US decided that public mental health treatment was expensive and that throwing the poor needing mental health care out on the streets to fend for themselves is more economical than caring for them...

Sure, organized religion is a Megabusiness that occasionally sees it necessary to justify their existence by  helping the poor and underpriviledged with whatever is left after helping themselves to as much as possible......

this help, however is no excuse for spraying the homeless with water on very cold nights in San Francisco, which constitutes a heinously barbaric human rights abuse of the first order, ranking with acts that---unless done in the Name of God----  are universally recognized as torture.

If only these "homeless" bums would go out and get a job instead of being parasites on American society. These miscreants spend all their government handouts on booze and drugs with no thought of saving money for a rainy day. There are plenty of houses to rent, motels, hotels and even friends couches to sleep on. It is well within the rights of the charitable, loving, kind and merciful Catholic church to hose the "homeless" out of their beautiful places of worship.

Well, one has to consider that some of us could also be in the same shoes if things went south on us.

Not everyone is lazy, lots of mental illness.

Anyway, like some here, I have helped the less fortunate and tried not to be judgemental

Though there were some difficult folks, most of them were a pleasure to be around

And you know, you get a good feeling inside when you help someone else.

It's not just any church. The Catholic Church is particularly ruthless towards the poor in ways that other churches aren't.

Had a friend, a devout Catholic, Irish as a fifth of whiskey and looked it. He got his wallet stolen in DC at a concert and it was late at night when he realized that he was stuck there (he was my neighbor, in the suburbs) until the morning when he could call someone to pick him up.

He went into a Catholic church and fell asleep on one of the pews in the back. A priest woke him up, yelled at him, and kicked him out.

So he went to an Episcopal church next. The priest there gave him a place to rest and some food and water and let him stay the night safely. Next morning he called me and I picked him up from the city.

I'm not really a fan of any church or religion at all, but the difference really should be noted. If you are looking for help in a desperate situation, don't ask the Catholic Church, they'll treat you like scum. But another church might do the right thing and help you out.

The truth about this problem (the homeless in SF) is that the gov't could be spending the $$ they spend on Israel and the endless wars to keep these people in some sort of mental health facility.

Regan pretty much kicked these people onto the streets.

In 10 year time expect alot of once middle class people to be sharing their rooming with these crazy asses.

back in the 90s there was a church here that used to let homless people sleep on the outside of the building at night.  that ended about 15 years ago.  part of the problem is the homeless tend to use the restroom in the area or wherever and so what do you do?  its unfortunate because not all homeless are drug addicts and alcoholics nor do they all use the bathroom in the hallway.

Treating the homeless like money-changers. How ironic. That said, I'm guessing this church and others nearby do a lot to help people like these homeless folks. Some churches have programs that allow homeless people to spend the nights in the churches. And a lot are involved in education, self-help, and similar programs. Water spraying was an insult and a mistake, problem could have been resolved in other ways.

I spoke at a church meeting last night called StreetReach.  There were 45 men and women of the streets.  Ages,,  19 to 75.  There are people who choose to be homeless.  Shocking right?  We feed them.  We get them into rehab if they wish.  We clothe them.  We help them line up social services.  There are alcoholics,  tweekers,  meth heads and heroin addicts.  I will be 60 this year.  By God's grace and mercy I have never slept on the street.  I have been close a few times.

We feed the urban outdoorsmen and women breakfast 5 days a week.  We have things that are not tied down routinely stolen from the church.  Video equipment,  musical intruments,  volunteer womens purses.  See,  drug and alcohol addicts are thinking of one thing only,  the next drink or fix.  I am not holier than any man or woman.  When I look at the street people I realize each is there because of choices made.  There are consequences of choices.  Those who wish for help can find it.  Those who wish for a good meal can have it.  We do not beat them over the head with God's love.  Those with eyes to see will see.

I was a drunk for many years.  I chose to stop being a drunk.  A month ago one of my younger brothers who chose to stay  a drunk took his own life at the age of 55.  See,  my road is no different than any others.  Life in all of its grandeur is just bigger than some people.  I give of my time because I am thankful there were people in my path that gave of theirs.  True religion pure and undefiled is to visit the fatherless and widows.  That is in the book I read.

I claim no all knowing intellect when it comes to dealing with the homeless.  The poor will always be with us.  They have mothers, they have wives,  they have children and siblings.  It is within all of us to have empathy and compassion.  I say give where  you can.  Help if you can.  Give where you know it will be used wisely.  I have yet to see a U Haul trailer behind a hearse.  You will not take it with you.

I have rambled on.  Forgive me.  Good weekend to all.

These 'homeless' deserve it.

San Fran is run by communists. They do all they can to overwhelm the city by catering to the 'homeless' trash. The city is overrun. Regular street maintenance is neglected but the communists running the city sure 'help' the "homeless" all they can, overwhelming the city's systems. There are streets so choked with 'homeless' trash that one cannot drive down them.

These people are a problem, not the defenseless angels of poverty they're made out to be. Many are just junkies, others mentally ill who should be institutionalized. All are in San Fran because the communists running the city have turned on the gravy train for them.

It is SF for goodness sake, in the land of fruits and nuts. This unGodly church shall be rebuked, as they seem to have no compassion for their fellow man. Not all churches act in this manner, as a matter of fact, MOST act quite the opposite.

My Baptist church provides food for the homeless, and invites them inside to take showers, with donated soap, shampoo and the like. They provide toiletries to brush teeth, etc. And for good measure, provide clean clothes to wear - all donated by the congregation.

Please don't denigrate the whole church for the acts of the malicious, capricious few!

The strangest comments are from those who demand self-destruction as a means of proving one is "kind" or "caring." Under no condition does anyone have to self-destruct, and that means churches too, in order to prove ones charity. Liberals are always about self-destruction which is really weird; theoretically, self-preservation is the strongest of human drives. But with liberals, it's all a tear-it-down-around-our-ears.

Reminds me of Obomas love for the muslims; they would do some really nasty things to his daughters, but he loves that self-destruction so what the heck, eh?

I'm a small "l" libertarian. I don't give a rat's ass about the Catholic Church or any other church or religion.

I DO give a shit about "private property rights". Propertyy rights are the foundation of a libertarian society.

Nobody, including the homeless, has a right to trash someone elses property--including the property of a church we can all agree(or not) is a scumbag institution. Shitty church or not, it still has rights under the law.

Under the law most churches are tax exempt (even property taxes) on the basis that they are non profit charitable organizations...they  are not "private property" but somewhat less. Traditionally they can be sanctuary from the outside law and within the walls of Catholic churches, Canon law has sway. You should take a moment to educate yourself before ... and try to rise above   shitty, scumbag  etc.. it only illuminates where your consciousness lives.

For those of you not paying attenntion, the key word here is "syringes." Heroin is creating massive problems throughout this county and leaving syringes everywhere. I went for a walk the other day and found two, probably thrown out a car window, along the side of the road. As to the "homeless," one of my favorite books is The Grapes of Wrath, a testimony to the American stoutfastness and the core of our country: There is no job an American won't do. Unless, of course, the Tower of Babel destruction of our country, by assaulting us with third worlders who have absolutely nothing in common with us, is embraced.

According to recent articles in the NY Times, and elsewhere, California has less than a year of water in its reservoirs. In 1970, California (state of my birth) had 19,953 MILLION people (Wikipedia) of whom 90% were white. In 2014, California had 38,804 MILLION people. All of those 20 MILLION people are third world foreigners, the ceding of the state of California to Mexico and Chinese. This is high treason by our own government.

And that doesn't count the ten to fifteen MILLION illegals who are not counted. There is no such thing as "birth right" by illegals. One must be Legal to benefit from any law. According to the liberals, one can Steal a nationa by placing feet on the ground, even if those feet are three inches long. This violates every precept of law. Stop all immigration now. What part of Blade Runner do the beurecrats not understand?

People also seem to miss a bigger point here. Institutions are not individuals but people like to blame the institutions like they are somehow sentient and intelligent beings acting of their own accord. They aren't, it is individuals that drive the actions using the institutions as the vehicle not the institutions, regardless of said institutional culture or ideals. An institution is nothing more than tool like a hammer or computer.

There are genuine churches that perform extraordinary services to the poor and underpriviledged, and there are churches that suck...The Maytag Catholic Church in San Francisco obviously sucks....
Just compare it with Glide Memorial Church, which is atruly  great Church in San Francisco. (look it up in Wikipedia if you are not familiar with it)...housed in a humble building that is a far cry from the grandiose artifice known as the Maytag Palace, since the 1960s, Glide Church has provided various services for the poor and disenfranchised. Glide currently runs 87 various social service programs. Through their Daily Free Meals program, Glide serves three meals daily, amounting to over 750,000 free meals a year.
In 2007, Glide provided 750,000 meals per year through their community clinic, which serves more than 3,000 homeless people. They provided over 100,000 hours of licensed childcare and quality after-school programming to over 325 clients in 2007. They provided emergency supplies to 2,190 individuals in 2006. And they booked 5,707 shelter beds and helped 120 homeless persons move into permanent housing in 2007. According to their website, Glide’s daily Free Meals program served 934,000 meals in 2009.
The church also provides HIV testing, mental and primary health care, women's programs, crisis intervention, an after-school program, creative arts and mentoring for youth, literacy classes, computer training, job skills training, drug and alcohol recovery programs, free legal services for the homeless, housing with case management, and much more.

A poor old homeless man kept trying to get into a church every Sunday, and everytime the ushers would toss him out.

This went on for years, and then one day as he sat on the church steps,  there was another new man sitting there...He asked if they threw him out too?

The other man, Jesus said..." No, I've been trying to get in there for years".

People who are non-catholic are confused over these incidents.

The vast majority of the lapsed cathollics realize that when dealing

with these "archcoceses" you are dealing with organized crime with prayers.

I use to say the mafia with prayers, but there are somethings the mafia

could not do.

If any of you bleeding hearts had actually had in-person encounters with members of San Francisco's homeless community, you'd be thanking them for spraying water and not tear gas.

Fuck all religions.  It is a system designed to create slaves.  They are hypocrites and demons.  They exemplify the worst traits about humanity.

On the other hand, certain followers get it right, but they are 1 in a million.   But for each saint there a 999,999 rotten pieces of shit.
