Why We’re Drifting Towards World War 3
The Economist argues that there are ominous parallels between the conditions which led to the first world war and today:
The United States is Britain, the superpower on the wane, unable to guarantee global security. Its main trading partner, China, plays the part of Germany, a new economic power bristling with nationalist indignation and building up its armed forces rapidly. Modern Japan is France, an ally of the retreating hegemon and a declining regional power. The parallels are not exact—China lacks the Kaiser’s territorial ambitions and America’s defence budget is far more impressive than imperial Britain’s—but they are close enough for the world to be on its guard.
Which, by and large, it is not. The most troubling similarity between 1914 and now is complacency. Businesspeople today are like businesspeople then: too busy making money to notice the serpents flickering at the bottom of their trading screens. Politicians are playing with nationalism just as they did 100 years ago. China’s leaders whip up Japanophobia, using it as cover for economic reforms, while Shinzo Abe stirs Japanese nationalism for similar reasons.
The New Republic points out that global downturns can lead to war:
As the experience of the 1930s testified, a prolonged global downturn can have profound political and geopolitical repercussions. In the U.S. and Europe, the downturn has already inspired unsavory, right-wing populist movements. It could also bring about trade wars and intense competition over natural resources, and the eventual breakdown of important institutions like European Union and the World Trade Organization. Even a shooting war is possible.
The Telegraph notes that the economic crisis in Europe is increasing tensions:
Tensions between European countries unseen in decades are emerging.
(Indeed, Europe is stuck in a downturn worse than the Great Depression.)
Well-known economist Nouriel Roubini tweeted from the gathering of the rich and powerful at the World Economic Forum in Davos last year:

Paul Craig Roberts – former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under President Reagan, former editor of the Wall Street Journal, listed by Who’s Who in America as one of the 1,000 most influential political thinkers in the world, PhD economist – wrote an article about the build up of hostilities between the U.S. and Russia titled, simply: “War Is Coming”.
Similarly, Ronald Reagan’s head of the Office of Management and Budget – David Stockman – is posting pieces warning of the dispute between the U.S. and Russia leading to World War 3.
Trend forecaster Gerald Celente – who has been making some accurate financial and geopolitical predictions for decades – says WW3 will start soon.
Investment fund manager and adviser Martin Armstrong has charted the “cycles of war” back to 600 BC … and says that we’ll have major wars between now and 2020. He has written pieces recently entitled, “Why We will Go to War with Russia“, and another one saying, “Prepare for World War III“.
Investment adviser Larry Edelson – who has long studied the “cycles of war” – wrote last month:
This year … we will also be hit by another ramping up of the related war cycles.

Former Goldman Sachs technical analyst Charles Nenner – who has made some big accurate calls, and counts major hedge funds, banks, brokerage houses, and high net worth individuals as clients – says there will be “a major war”, which will drive the Dow to 5,000.
Veteran investor adviser James Dines forecast a war as epochal as World Wars I and II, starting in the Middle East.
Bad Economic Theories
What’s causing the slide towards war? We discuss several causes below.
Initially, believe it or not, one cause is that many influential economists and talking heads hold the discredited belief that war is good for the economy.
Therefore, many are overtly or more subtly pushing for war.
Challengers Give Declining Empires “Itchy Fingers”
Moreover, historians say that declining empires tend to attack their rising rivals … so the risk of world war is rising because the U.S. feels threatened by the rising empire of China.
The U.S. government considers economic rivalry to be a basis for war. Therefore, the U.S. is systematically using the military to contain China’s growing economic influence.
Competition for Resources Is Heating Up
In addition, it is well-established that competition for scarce resources often leads to war. For example, Oxford University’s Quarterly Journal of Economics notes:
In his classic, A Study of War, Wright (1942) devotes a chapter to the relationship between war and resources. Another classic reference, Statistics of Deadly Quarrels by Richardson (1960),extensively discusses economic causes of war, including the control of “sources of essential commodities.”A large literature pioneered by Homer-Dixon (1991, 1999) argues that scarcity of various environmental resources is a major cause of conflict and resource wars (see Toset, Gleditsch, and Hegre 2000, for empirical evidence).

In the War of the Pacific (1879–1884), Chile fought against a defensive alliance of Bolivia and Peru for the control of guano [i.e. bird poop] mineral deposits. The war was precipitated by the rise in the value of the deposits due to their extensive use in agriculture.

Westing (1986) argues that many of the wars in the twentieth century had an important resource dimension. As examples he cites the Algerian War of Independence (1954–1962), the Six Day War (1967), and the Chaco War (1932–1935). More recently, Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990 was a result of the dispute over the Rumaila oil field. In Resource Wars (2001), Klare argues that following the end of the Cold War, control of valuable natural resources has become increasingly important, and these resources will become a primary motivation for wars in the future.
Former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan (and many world leaders) admitted that the Iraq war was really about oil, and former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill says that Bush planned the Iraq war before 9/11. And see this and this. Libya, Syria, Iran and Russia are all oil-producing countries as well …
Indeed, we’ve extensively documented that the wars in the Middle East and North Africa are largely about oil and gas. The war in Gaza may be no exception. And see this. And Ukraine may largely be about gas as well.
And James Quinn and Charles Hugh Smith say we’re running out of all sorts of resources … which will lead to war.
Central Banking and Currency Wars
We’re in the middle of a global currency war – i.e. a situation where nations all compete to devalue their currencies the most in order to boost exports. Brazilian president Rousseff said in 2010:
The last time there was a series of competitive devaluations … it ended in world war two.
Jim Rickards agrees:
Currency wars lead to trade wars, which often lead to hot wars. In 2009, Rickards participated in the Pentagon’s first-ever “financial” war games. While expressing confidence in America’s ability to defeat any other nation-state in battle, Rickards says the U.S. could get dragged into “asymmetric warfare,” if currency wars lead to rising inflation and global economic uncertainty.
As does billionaire investor Jim Rogers:
Trade wars always lead to wars.
Given that China, Russia, India, Brazil and South Africa have joined together to create a $100 billion bank based in China, and that more and more trades are being settled in Yuan or Rubles – instead of dollars – the currency war is quickly heating up.
Indeed, many of America’s closest allies are joining China’s effort … which is challenging America and the Dollar’s hegemony.
Multi-billionaire investor Hugo Salinas Price says:
What happened to [Libya’s] Mr. Gaddafi, many speculate the real reason he was ousted was that he was planning an all-African currency for conducting trade. The same thing happened to him that happened to Saddam because the US doesn’t want any solid competing currency out there vs the dollar. You know Gaddafi was talking about a gold dinar.
Senior CNBC editor John Carney noted:
Is this the first time a revolutionary group has created a central bank while it is still in the midst of fighting the entrenched political power? It certainly seems to indicate how extraordinarily powerful central bankers have become in our era.
Robert Wenzel of Economic Policy Journal thinks the central banking initiative reveals that foreign powers may have a strong influence over the rebels.
This suggests we have a bit more than a ragtag bunch of rebels running around and that there are some pretty sophisticated influences. “I have never before heard of a central bank being created in just a matter of weeks out of a popular uprising,” Wenzel writes.
Indeed, some say that recent wars have really been about bringing all countries into the fold of Western central banking.
Debt
Martin Armstrong argued that war plans against Syria are really about debt and spending:
The Syrian mess seems to have people lining up on Capital Hill when sources there say the phone calls coming in are overwhelmingly against any action. The politicians are ignoring the people entirely. This suggests there is indeed a secret agenda to achieve a goal outside the discussion box. That is most like the debt problem and a war is necessary to relief the pressure to curtail spending.
The same logic applies to Ukraine and other countries.
Billionaire hedge fund manager Kyle Bass writes:
Trillions of dollars of debts will be restructured and millions of financially prudent savers will lose large percentages of their real purchasing power at exactly the wrong time in their lives. Again, the world will not end, but the social fabric of the profligate nations will be stretched and in some cases torn. Sadly, looking back through economic history, all too often war is the manifestation of simple economic entropy played to its logical conclusion. We believe that war is an inevitable consequence of the current global economic situation.
Runaway Inequality
Paul Tudor Jones – founder of the Tudor Investment Corporation and the Tudor Group, which trade in the fixed-income, equity, currency and commodity markets – said this week:
This gap between the 1 percent and the rest of America, and between the US and the rest of the world, cannot and will not persist.
Historically, these kinds of gaps get closed in one of three ways: by revolution, higher taxes or wars.

War Is Destroying Our National Security, Our Democracy and Our Economy
We spent trillions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Yet a top Pentagon official say we’re no safer – and perhaps less safe – after 13 years of war. Indeed, war only PROMOTED the dramatic expansion of even worse terrorists.
Never-ending wars are also destroying our democratic republic. The Founding Fathers warned against standing armies, saying that they destroy freedom. (Update). Perversely, our government treats anti-war sentiment as terrorism.
The Founding Fathers – and the father of free market capitalism – also warned against financing wars with debt. But according to Nobel prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, the U.S. debt for the Iraq war could be as high as $5 trillion dollars (or $6 trillion dollars according to a study by Brown University.)
Indeed, top economists say that war is destroying our economy.
But war is great for the bankers and the defense contractors. And – as discussed above – governments are desperate for war.
So it’s up to us – the people – to stop wider war.

Since there is almost nothing but organized crime, surrounded by controlled opposition, "we" are PADDLING VIGOROUSLY towards WW III, while it does not appear to make any difference to the people doing the paddling that there are now weapons of mass destruction which are so many orders of magnitude greater than those which existed during WWII that there is NO RATIONAL COMPARISON between that and the threat of WW III.
In every way, the established psychological and political habits of the ruling classes and those they rule over have become runaway criminal insanities, due to the ways that those social habits endeavour to continue to exploit technologies which have become trillions of times more powerful, without any sign of having adapted their habits to those facts. In my view, the deepest source of the problems are the degree to which there are practically nothing but controlled opposition groups surrounding the core of organize crime, so that the only publicly significant groups promote bogus "solutions" based on the same old-fashioned false fundamental dichotomies and their related impossible ideals, such as the false duality of war versus peace.
The ONLY genuine solutions to the chronic political problems would require better death control systems. That would require going through BOTH levels of the problems that there is almost nothing but organized crime, surrounded by controlled opposition. The established systems operate death controls which were selected by the history of successful warfare to become based on the maximum possible deceits and treacheries, while the controlled opposition groups stay within the same deceitful frame of reference regarding the death controls.
Thus, there tends to be a sterile debate between deceitful death control systems versus the impossible ideals that there should be no death control systems, or none that human beings are aware of operating. All of the scientific progress and related advancements in technology have done almost nothing to change the ways that most people perceive politics, where the bogus arguments are between war versus peace, rather than about how to develop better death controls.
The most important of all the factors leading to war is "Competition for Resources Is Heating Up," because of the ways that the industrial revolutions developed to maximize the strip-mining of the natural resources of a fresh planet, at an exponentially accelerating rate. The temporary decrease in selection pressures, due to new stocks of resources, enabled by the industrial revolution has spun through its potential exponential growth phase, and now appears to have come close to peaking, in ways which are crashing into newly emerging limits of diminishing returns, that could be more drastic than ever before in human history, or any other time during human evolution. The chronic political problems which always exist were temporarily abated, only to now be coming back with a vengeance, much worse than ever!
All of the other reasons were playing supporting roles to enable the chronic political problems due to the constant potential for exponential growth of the human population to run into new, and perhaps worse, limits of the environment to allow that to happen, are in every other way the primary driving factors for future conflicts over even the most basic resources like water. When the ability to continue to strip-mine the planet's natural resources at an exponential rate reaches real limits of diminishing returns, the combined total of the human population and human activities will have already grossly overshot whatever might otherwise have been theoretically sustainable. One way or another, sooner or later, some radically different systems are going to have to adapt to the basic facts regarding the limits to exponential growth.
The first and foremost place that those problems are going to manifest will be through the fundamentally fraudulent financial accounting systems that were "paying" to strip-mine the planet, with "money" made out of nothing as debts. Since the human symbols control social access to natural resources, the struggle to control the monetary and taxation systems are the symbolic struggles to control natural resources, as the BASIC problem of available natural resources gets serious, the symbolic struggles will simultaneously get WAY WORSE!
Those who have the power to make that public "money" supply out of nothing (which are now the systems of privately controlled bankster frauds, enforced by governments), are all of the superficial reasons why they will continue to be VIGOROUSLY PADDLING towards World War III, regardless of how criminally insane that has become. However, the deeper issues are how could civilization develop sufficiently different integrated systems of human, industrial and natural ecologies, which were eventually adapted to a world where exponential growth of the strip-mining of the planet was no longer possible, while, during those processes, there was some degree of collapse into chaos, and associated mass murders ... which would perhaps leave some survivors to continue to develop some kind of new evolutionary ecologies.
The main obstacles in the way of doing that are the basic nature of the two-fold systems of organized crime, surrounded by controlled opposition, BOTH of which stay within the same frame of reference of the maximum possible deceitful attitudes towards the death control systems. Any genuine "peace processes" would have to actually implement different death control systems. Any "peace" based on stopping the death controls are deceitful, and demented, because that guarantees worse events in the future, due to the chronic political problems continuing to pump energy into the problematic political situations. However, BOTH aspects of the established systems of organized crime and controlled opposition promote that kind of impossible ideal, and are generally approved of within those living inside of those systems, despite that attitude being absurdly deceitful from the perspective of understanding how and why there exist chronic political problems inherent in the nature of life, which may wax and wane, but can never disappear completely.
The essential problem is that human beings have developed cultural systems of artificial selection whose social successes were based on the maximum possible deceits and frauds, so that there ended up being a civilization in which there was almost nothing but organized crime surrounded by controlled opposition. Hence, not only are the actually existing death controls done in the most deceitful manner, while those back up debt controls based on the maximum possible frauds, but moreover, the only public significant opposition groups also stay within that same frame of reference. Form a sublime point of view, it is astonishing to regard the degree to which human civilizations are collectively able to deliberately ignore the problematic facts of life, due to those having actually been resolved throughout history in ways which enabled deceits and frauds to become the most socially successful strategies to cope with those conditions.
The ONLY genuine solutions would require profound paradigm shifts in the ways that enough people perceive political problems, in order to comprehend how and why the world is almost totally dominated by professional liars and immaculate hypocrites, in BOTH the core organized crime gangs, and those groups that surround them as their controlled opposition. HOWEVER, as most of the articles and comments on Zero Hedge demonstrate the nature of those problems over, and over, and over again, including those well-researched articles from George Washington, their is a wide-spread agreement to deliberately ignore the basic facts of life, so that those are not publicly addresses, which attitude has been strongly reinforced by the actual human history of dealing with those situations ending up being that conflicts were resolved through fighting, in which those who were the most dishonest about that have prevailed.
Meanwhile, the rabbit hole goes far deeper than one can fully comprehend, through apparently infinite tunnels of deceits, such as the issues of whether or not there were already some kind of "alien" contacts, and/or there are significant alternative energy sources, which have been deliberately suppressed.

What continues to be the MOST IMPORTANT developments are the Growing Grand Canyon Chasms between progress in physical sciences, versus practically nothing like that in political science. Therefore, between the history of World War II, and the potential for World War III, weapons of mass destruction have been developed that are trillions of times more powerful, and which make everything that happened during World War II be trivial in comparison to the potential destruction which could be done by World War III.
NOW, there are globalized systems of electronic monkey money frauds, backed by the threat of force from apes with atomic bombs. THERE IS NOTHING IN HUMAN HISTORY TO COMPARE THAT TO, AND SO, MOST EFFORTS TO DO SO AMOUNT TO NOTHING MORE THAN NOSTALGIC NONSENSE. The mainstream of society tends to not perceive that the established systems are based on triumphant organized crime, in which governments have become the biggest form of organized crime, controlled by the best organized gangs of criminals, which are currently the international banksters. Simultaneously, the few that do face those social facts tend to STILL continue to propose bogus "solutions" based on impossible ideals, because they STILL perceive political problems through the dualities of false fundamental dichotomies. Indeed, since the dominant natural languages that we use to communicate were mostly made by the ruling classes, and maintained for their uses, (in their war against the consciousness of those they ruled over) it is extremely difficult not to have the ways that one thinks continue to be controlled by the biggest bullies' bullshit world view! The degree to which there has been civilization based on being able to back up lies with violence for thousands of years matches the degree to which there has been controlled opposition, so that all historically significant religions and ideologies primarily became forms of controlled opposition. That means that there is practically nothing that exists in the public spaces but bullshit fighting bullshit, which is why bullshit almost always wins and controls civilization. As social pyramid systems gets pumped up and UP by progress in physical sciences and technologies, such as the development of weapons of mass destruction, that society continues to be almost totally dominated by bullshit, and run by the best available professional liars and immaculate hypocrites, means that we are collectively totally failing to adapt to the development of those weapons of mass destruction in any saner ways, but rather, are only lying to ourselves each other on astronomically amplified scales!
Hence, the most probable futures are that the runaway systems of debt slavery, that have generated numbers which have become debt insanities, ARE going to provoke death insanities, such as World War III, which WILL become orders of magnitude more criminally insane than we can currently comprehend. That continues to be extremely probable because there is almost no genuine opposition that is not controlled. It is practically impossible to have any rational public debates which faces the basic social, biological and physical facts, because of the degree to which civilization is dominated by the established systems of organized crime, surrounded by controlled opposition. The most socially successful systems are based on the maximum possible deceits and frauds, to the degree that the only publicly significant opposition stays within the same frame of reference, whereby there is almost nothing but superficial criticisms of the deceitful death controls, which tend to never face the basic realities that there must necessarily be some death control systems.
A couple of the things that people fight over most are sex and money. Both are subject to social taboos. The taboos over the discussion of money are actually now greater than the taboos around the discussion of money. Of course, there are reasons for that, such as, from a biological point of view, sex and death are inseparable, while from a sociological point of view, money and murder are inseparable. There are combined money/murder systems, because money IS measurement backed by murder. The international banksters dominate the global "money" supply because they ARE the best organized gangs of criminals. That is WHY war is a racket, or that wars are the harvest of the bankers. However, while most people still do not want to understand that, those few who do still tend to promote bogus "solutions" that there ought not be any such systems, despite that the problems come as necessary package deals.
The only genuinely superior solutions would require that political science catch up to physical sciences, so that progress in the cultural artificial selection systems were able to be reconciled with the natural selection systems. Of course, that is already actually the case, the sense that human beings and civilizations are already operating as entropic pumps of energy flows, of the same energy from the environment and back, through them as toroidal vortices. HOWEVER, the central problem has become the history of successful warfare based on deceits, which kind of human ecology then enabled the development of successful economics based on frauds. Since human realities are always systems of organized lies operating robberies, those who were the best at doing that became the most wealthy and powerful people, while their social successes at doing that also enabled them to control their opposition.
AROUND AND AROUND AND AROUND THAT WENT, THROUGHOUT HUMAN HISTORY, UNTIL AT THE PRESENT TIME, THERE IS ALMOST NOTHING BUT ORGANIZED CRIME AND CONTROLLED OPPOSITION, FIGHTING BULLSHIT WITH BULLSHIT, WHICH ONLY MAKES THE REAL PROBLEMS GET WORSE, FASTER!
Most of the controlled opposition does not recognize the degree to which it is controlled, and that it too much necessarily be some system of organized lies operating robberies. It is not clear to what degree the established systems of organized crime still understand themselves either, after so many generations have passed. However, it is clearer than those who have been controlled by bullshit for generation after generation believe in that bullshit, and want to continue to believe in that bullshit.
By and large, the current human social pyramid systems have different groups of people who fit into different niches, which each group attached to the ideas and ideals associated with those kinds of people who fulfill the requirements of that niche. There were good reasons for how and why human beings and human civilizations developed successful warfare based on deceits, and successful finance based on frauds. However, by and large, the vast majority of controlled opposition groups refuse to face those deeper levels of facts about the chronic political problems inherent in the nature of life. The daily lives and quotidian habits of the vast majority of people have become so far removed from their basic animal nature, and the history of their hunter gatherer ancestors, that most people are quite out of touch with basic facts of life, because, for them, their lives take place in quite artificial environments, that that operate in through very specialized behaviors. Although there are COMBINED money/murder systems, those who carry out the specialized tasks within either the monetary or military systems tend to be some of the most extreme examples of the ways that people generally are psychotically out of touch with a holistic understanding of their situation.

The only way to actually "prevent" World War III would be to develop better death control systems, which would become better forms of warfare. Instead of "thank you for your service" tell them : Sorry! What happened? What fooled you? How did they brainwash you? How did they convince you to become a part of war culture? Your premise starts from an economic cause, that is a faulty assumption. The basis for WW3 is religion, Shia vs the Sunni. It will be the Iranian Theocratic Empire versus the Sunni States and Israel. Russia and China are Iran's economic allies.
The US is it's own player as Obama intends to fully remove the US from leading any political effort in the world. Obama as the Commander in Chief will choose NOT to fully deploy military assets to intentionally kneel the ball on Iran's one yard line allowing them free reign to fight with the Sunnis and Israel.
Russia will cut off Europe's natural gas supply once the Shiites and Sunnis get into a full killing mode. Europe will capitulate to Russia to become a vassal state.

The W Wilson of 1916 ran on the slogan, "He kept us out of war". Once elected, he then actively worked to get the US involved in WW1.
FDR promised in the 1940 presidential campaign there would be no involvement in foreign wars if he were re-elected. Once elected, he then did all he could to get the US involved in WW2.
LBJ ran in 1964 with the contention that the Republican candidate would be likely to get the US involved in a war. After election, he then escalated Vietnam to become one of the costliest wars (for the US) in US history.
Nixon ran in 1968 with a promise to end the Vietnam War with his "secret plan" (which turned out to be expanding and escalating the war).
Obama ran as the "peace" candidate after Bush the invader. Obama's term is not yet over, but so far he has continued, expanded, and escalated US wars abroad, as well as increased military spending, and entrenched militarist policies foreign and domestic.
