"Black Friday History

For millions of people Black Friday is the time to do some serious Christmas shopping --even before the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers are gone! Black Black is the Friday after Thanksgiving, and it's one of the major shopping days of the year in the United States -falling anywhere between November 23 and 29. While it's not recognized as an official US holiday, many employees have the day off -except those working in retail.

The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1960s to mark the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season. “Black” refers to stores moving from the “red” to the “black,” back when accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit. Ever since the start of the modern Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the Friday after Thanksgiving has been known as the unofficial start to a bustling holiday shopping season.

In the 1960's, police in Philadelphia griped about the congested streets, clogged with motorists and pedestrians, calling it “Black Friday.” In a non-retail sense, it also describes a financial crisis of 1869: a stock market catastrophe set off by gold spectators who tried and failed to corner the gold market, causing the market to collapse and stocks to plummet.

Why did it become so popular?" ....

The scream comes when we look around.  Two new forclosures on my block this week.  My house is worth to the dime what I paid for it in 1998.  The foreclosures will go for 40 K less than that.  We have "illegal alien"  families living 20 in a home paying the same property taxes my wife and I pay with no kids in the school district schools.  When the city began to crack down on number of families in single family homes they were sued by the American Hispanic Society and lost a court battle.  So the people with no regard for the law can live four deep in single family homes and flood our schools demanding English as a second language teachers.  Our police department is now recruiting Spanish speaking police officers from out of state.  Seems the illegals don't want to work as the Po Po in our community so we pay to import them now too.

Am I bitter?  Nah.  The lights have gone out on America well over 20 years ago.  I was downsized by a company from an almost 18 year position.  The company caved with the 08-09 crash.  Out on the street looking for work at age 55.  Not fun but here I am.  The illegal I buy firewood from has me make out a check to his personal name.  Not his business name.  Wonder how many taxes he pays?  Hmm,  me too.

See America was a dream.  America was a place where at one time you could go as far as your determination and hard work was willing to take you.  That is broken.  Half our income supports the bloated beast that governement at all levels has become.  30 percent of our income support those too lazy to work.  They are efficient breeders and eaters but that is all.  It is for the children don't you know.  You want EBT you don't make more babies.  Period.  So that leaves the remaining 20 percent of your income for you to pay your expenses after taxes.  Do you realize you pay your expenses after taxes including property taxes?  Do you realize you invest as a rule with after tax income? Then you pay taxes on any profits from your investments. They are debating a rain tax here now.  You will be taxed according to how big the parking lot for your business is.  Yes,  you read it right.  Rain tax.

See,  Amercia was a dream.  That candle is no longer burning.  There is something amiss.  Now we have people demanding 15 dollars an hour as a minimum wage plus full time only and full benefits.  Can you say 14 dollar Big Mac?   Oh,  did you want fries with that?  That will be 18.50.

Broken.  It is not fixable.  It has become a rudderless ship floundering about.  Diversity.  Affirmative Action for 40 years.  No right.  No wrong.  Sex ED for second graders.  Run Jane run here comes Dick should work until at least 6th grade.

Broken.  We have been overrun.  We are ruled by few and abused my many.  I don't recognize my country.  I don't see it changing.

That shining city on a hill?  Not so much.  Who will change it?  Where there is no vision the people perish.  The days of vision are past.  Good day all.

Mid-Summers Nite Scream.

Maybe Mid-Summers Nite Collapse, but officially I called April 2015 for a Collapse... starting to look like I was wrong.

rgraf's picture

I'm not so sure that your April projection is wrong. There could be a 'passive' tax revolt on the 15th. With 92 million dropped out of the workforce, how many will drop out from filing? I wouldn't expect that to be publicly announced.

WB,

Did you ever consider that in the coming future that THIS particular piece of art willl be described to the schoolchildren that 'visit' the museums as...

(The winners write 'history', you know)...

A) The artwork of one that was killed in the Great Nuclear Holocaust of (insert date here)...

B) The artwork of a visionary who saw the inevitable victory of our way of life...

C) The artwork of an insurgent (Isn't it amazing that people who hated us could also hold so much hope? What a shame!)...

D) The artwork of a former creative and artistic member of society who became paranoid, and chose to jump out of a window with a nailgun in his hand...

E) The artwork of a true and honest visionary who tried to warn ALL people about the war that was inevitable...

(Obligatory <sarc> future comment added, for Mr. 7):

that's his statue, just over there...

next to the naked nubile young girl statues...

yes, kids, they DO appear to be fawning all over him...

The exceptional fools trusted their President, their Fed bankers, their Congress, and their media. The exceptional fools wanted their exceptional leaders to run the world. The ordinary Chinese and Russians did not call themselves exceptional. Trust in your exceptionalism always disappoints.

wisefool's picture

American exceptionalism = war/spy agency provisioning tax code. It works until it does not. Just like the interwebs did for both propaganda and "intelligence" agencies. Other parts of the world were not so myopic to put all the eggs in a basket made of chicken bones. In other words, thank god the USA is protected by those two big oceans. The "leadership" Hillary/Romney/Bush have all their assets in offshore accounts. They never cared or were capable of change.

dvfco's picture

I do believe in American Exceptionalism.  However, I think it failed when the message changed.  The children born of those from the self-proclaimed 'Greatest Generation' were taught respect, hard work, etc.

Those born after +/- 1978 had never seen anything bad in their lives that they could remember and had parents telling them that the world owed them.  I see a huge split somewhere between those born in the late 1960s and very early 1970s and those born 1980 or later.

I was born in 1970 and waited on lines for gas with my family while watching the Bronx burn.  My sister was born in 1979.  Her first memories are most likely the fall of the USSR, and all good things.  I didn't know anyone, seriously, whose parents were divorced, drove an expensive imported car, or who flew to vacations.   My sister's friends parents were all divorced, both parents worked but had nothing to show for it, etc.

I think you can figure out where a person stands politically based upon their year of birth more than just about anything else.

williambanzai7's picture

It is very easy to be shaped by the history and related propaganda you live through. That is why it is so important to constantly look further.

Anyone born in the 70s (a bleak period) began to form ideas during the 80s, the age of American neoliberalism and neconism and suddenly it seemed like a victory when the Soviet Union fell apart. This is also the period that inverted entitlement begn to take hold. Socialism and bailouts for the wealthy via the age of monetary central planning.

It has been all downhill ever since hasn't it.

Our exceptionalism, if there was any in the first place, was rooted in the Constitution, a long neglected artifact of history. We literally have purported experts and scholars (such as our President and his mentor Sunstein) denuding it of all meaning 24/7.

Cultural hegemony: "In this case, it is the domination of a people’s culture—ways of thinking, believing, and behaving—by those who own the culture’s “idea factories,” such as the mass media."

wisefool's picture

You said it better (more relevant) than me good sir. I am old so I was going to talk about how "the greatest generation" did have a solid work ethic, values, and patroitism, but it was the product of a highly nebulous war on foriegn soil.

You know, two or three years from now, these clowns are going to be sitting in the windowless ruin of what was once their home. Huddled around a small fire in the middle of their living room. Cooking what is left of the dog they killed three days ago and say, "You know, I sure wish I'd listened to those guys on Zero Hedge."

MontgomeryScott's picture

the founding fathers must be spinning in their graves...

Let me explain it to you so that you can undertand it.

The 'graves' are like a toilet bowl.

Now, you think that this is kind of 'strange' to fathom, I suppose.

Back in the '90's, the popular expression regarding what is happening is 'It's the BIG FLUSH, and we're on THE RIM'.

The whirlpool of the bowl is now sucking all the shit and piss down to be depostied in the place where formerly vibrant and life-giving elements go to decompose in to their baser elements (consider the expressions used in referring to the 'inner cities', described by SOME as 'cesspools' of humanity, for example, to get a grasp on what is occurring before your eyes).

The 'Founding fathers' gave us a REAL Republic, but WE couldn't keep it. I won't envoke THEIR lives and memories to help US, the HELPLESS and FECKLESS, to speak for what WE have wrought upon OURSELVES.

Did you think that you could 'cling to the rim' forever? The BIG SWIRL is now taking ALL BOATS down...
