US Begins "Big Stick" Negotiations With Iran: Sends The "Big Ships" Into The Persian Gulf

Tyler Durden's picture

Following its "visual to the world" message last night by test-firing an ICBM, America appears to shifting to 'big stick' diplomacy. Following Iran's naval drills last week (attacking a replica US aircraft carrier), Sputnik News reports that as the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 nations come to a head, the US begins Eagle Resolve, a massive military exercise in the Persian Gulf. Eagle Resolve will involve tactical exercises from the US Army, Marines, and various other military branches "with simulated portions of the exercise based on a fictional adversary." Careful to ensure Obama does not lose his Nobel Peace Prize, a CENTCOM official explained, "the exercise is not intended as a signal to Iran."

As Sputnik News reports,

With the support of regional allies, the US moved nearly 3,000 military personnel, as well as "air, land, sea, and special operations components," into the gulf. Taking place just off the coast of Kuwait, the exercise will continue through the end of the month, and is meant to improve the military’s response time should an incident occur in the region.

"Eagle Resolve 2015 will consist of a week-long series of simulated 'injects' to exercise participants' ability to respond as a multinational headquarters staff, followed by a series of tactical demonstrations of land, maritime, and air forces from several nations," reads a fact sheet provided to the Washington Free Beacon by US Central Command. "The exercise ends with a senior leader seminar to foster an environment for commanders to discuss issues of regional interest."

Eagle Resolve will involve tactical exercises from the US Army, Marines, and various other military branches to test readiness in air defense, border security, counterterrorism, as well as "consequence management." These include amphibious landing exercises and ship-based search and seizure operations.

Officials insist that the exercise has been in the planning stages for the last 14 months, and has nothing to do with the Iranian nuclear negotiations.

"The exercise is not intended as a signal to Iran," a CENTCOM official said, according to the Free Beacon. "If there’s any message at all, it’s that all participants have a common interest in regional security."

"It’s important to point out that this is a recurring exercise, with planning for this year’s exercise beginning over a year ago," the official added. "The focus of the exercise is on bolstering capabilities useful in a wide range of scenarios to help preserve and bolster regional security, with simulated portions of the exercise based on a fictional adversary."

Still, it’s hard to ignore which nation that “fictional adversary” may be in reference to. On Saturday, former CIA Director General David Petraeus called Iran the greatest long-term threat to stability in the region.

I'm looking at the picture again and thinking "those are our BIG ships?"  Tender ship, an Aegis class, I think and one of those helicopter carriers followed by the little duckies.

Where's the real hardware?  Not in frame, I guess.

I would say the money system that we currently have is the biggest long term threat, but I'm just a retard.

Did Larry Silverstein recently lease some of these boats?

Let's hope the Navy learned some things about warfare:

Our Navy is in denial.

Aircraft carriers are sitting ducks.

Wake the fu.k up, WWII happened over 70 years ago!!

It's going to take a lot of American lives for the poop head Admirals to change their ways.

I say load an aircraft carrier with Congress and the White House and send them to the coast of Iran!!

The Persian Gulf is just a glorious bath tub; the perfect place for a naval ambush. There is just another maritime area with similar characteristics (almost closed sea, very easy to block): The Black Sea. Incidentally, NATO is playing its silly games in there too, as we speak...

The office of Military Intelligence has been vacant since 1998.  Instead we have the office of Military Propaganda which relies on the spirit of the enterprise versus the merits.

The Persian Gulf is a death trap to the Carrier navy.  Diesel subs, mines, underwater obstacles. shore based portable missles, fast attack boats with should launched missles just to name a few.

Exactly, and then there was the Russian helicopter that used some sort of localized EMP device to completely disable one of our naval ships a few months ago.  Americans have put too much faith in our ability to dominate other super powers militarily.

Oh oh.. I just remembered Guccifer's remarks about detonating a nuke inside Chicago in 2015 - as a pretext false flag to invading Iran, and the permanent election of Obama to a shadow FEMA martal law government..  But if you are going to invade Iran first you have to position the military assets to do the strike.

Parading the ships through the channel is like a fighter bowing right before the match.

USN attack submarines have routinely sunk the Air Craft Carrier in Naval War games since the late 1950's. By the 70's the submarine was able to appoach and sink the Carrier with regularity, much depending on the sea conditions in the operational zone.

Clearly, the submarine threat is a huge danger to USN Carrier Task Forces. Especially if the enemy knows where the USN Carrier will be operating.

In that case, the enemy Submarine goes to the known zone of operations, goes silent, and just sits making no noise, and right under a thermal layer in teh water column. Sitting silent, there is nearly zero chance it will be detected. Then it waits, waits for a chance. The better intelligence on operational zones of the carrier, the more likely the enemy sub kills the Carrier in an ambush position.

On the contrary. It's a great idea if you want to provoke some scared 23-year-old Iranian pilot into giving you an excuse to start the planned Iran carpet-bombing and Tomahawk party.

The Carl Vinson is the only one in the Gulf today - fighting fake ISIS along with the Charled de Gaulle. There use to be two U.S. aircraft carrier groups in the Gulf for years until they axed one last year. The politicians are alread crying about putting a second one back there again. I suppose our recent re-supplying al Qaeda in Yemen would be a good excuse for that (by Washington's calculation, not mine).

American Carrier groups are built to defend against air attack of all kinds. But nobody knows how really effective the radars, missiles and guns would be once the shooting begins. Iran would be mad to launch a single form of attack, as it would clearly be defeated. But if a carefully planed joint effort was made, then we just can't know. Iraq ideally would launch a whole host of old outdated anti shipping missiles, which they have plenty of, and include a handful of their very best new anti shipping missiles with this attack. Coordinate this air attack to coincide with an attempt by Irans submarines to approach the task force.

USN anti missile technology is very good. But Russia's most modern missiles are designed to defeat this very defense. Only when the two systems are launched will we know.

From the 2002 Millennium Challenge war games in the Gulf
Red is Iran. Blue US

What if Iran goes back to old school Tactics to counter US tech "superiority"

Red used a fleet of small boats to determine the position of Blue's fleet by the second day of the exercise. . In a preemptive strike, Red launched a massive salvo of cruise missiles that destroyed sixteen warships]. This included one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of six amphibious ships. An equivalent success in a real conflict would have resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 service personnel. Soon after the cruise missile offensive, another significant portion of Blue's navy was "sunk" by an armada of small Red boats, which carried out both conventional and suicide attacks that capitalized on Blue's inability to detect them as well as expected.

Indeed Winston. To quote the last Admiral to use Carriers in a real naval conflict. Your admiral Sandy Woodward, "The job of a carrier admiral is to never put his ships into a position where they can be shoot at, but to deploy forward the carrier's airwing to do the job."

This was in response to claims Woodward was holding back his two carriers in the Falklands invasion. He laid back and went forward only to launch and recover attack wings when he felt it safe. As he told the complainers, "If I lose a carrier, I lose the war. I can afford to lose some Frigates or landing ships, I can not afford to lose a carrier."

So YES, those USN Carriers should never enter the straights. Only a bloody fool would do it.

Actually being there while it was a War Zone, I concur.

Davey_Jones had the Surface Actions Groups (sans the Nuke Cruisers - CGNs) and some Air Support handle the our Convoys in the Gulf during the Iran-Iraq War; but Team_USA pulled it off during the 1st Gulf War since Saddam didn't have much of a Navy and they were at the deep end of the Gulf.

IRN was always a different story.  We had a few conflicts with them during our Convoy Runs.  There's a good deal of Traffic going through those "Dire Straits".

Mines, Small Boats, Torpedoes, Sea Skimmers, and now, Drones.

It's going to be pretty nasty if things go Hot.

Which reminds me to Tip my Hat to the Crew of the Josephus Daniels.  They had a T-Shirt Made - depicting an emptied bottle of "Jack Daniels", with the Label modifed to "Josephus Daniels", 100% Persian Gulf Waters.  There was a Silkworm Missile stuck inside at the shoulder. The motto on the Bottom read,

"We drank the whole Bottle; but we didn't eat the Worm".

Sadly, it won't be that easy this time around...

Netanyahu is opposed to any deal with Iran - so no deal, and possibly conflict:

Israel Spied on Iran Nuclear Talks With U.S. Ally’s snooping upset White House because information was used to lobby Congress to try to sink a deal

Soon after the U.S. and other major powers entered negotiations last year to curtail Iran’s nuclear program, senior White House officials learned Israel was spying on the closed-door talks.

The spying operation was part of a broader campaign by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to penetrate the negotiations and then help build a case against the emerging terms of the deal, current and former U.S. officials said. In addition to eavesdropping, Israel acquired information from confidential U.S. briefings, informants and diplomatic contacts in Europe, the officials said.

The espionage didn’t upset the White House as much as Israel’s sharing of inside information with U.S. lawmakers and others to drain support from a high-stakes deal intended to limit Iran’s nuclear program, current and former officials said.

“It is one thing for the U.S. and Israel to spy on each other. It is another thing for Israel to steal U.S. secrets and play them back to U.S. legislators to undermine U.S. diplomacy,” said a senior U.S. official briefed on the matter.

All this floating hardware/gun platforms offers an easy target should something go wrong and hostilities break out with this hypothetical enemy. If this indeed somekind of highly visible big stick for Iran's benefit, I'd say that TPTB should start ordering the body bags now. Interesting point about Obama learning about this from CNN. Now we all know this is a sarc comment, but the truth is that the Obama administration, like the Bush one that preceded it, is riven with factions of all kinds who seemingly conduct their own policies without reference to the White House, viz Miz Nuland e.g., but there are lots more besides her cabal and it will be interesting to see who, faced with a keen sense of deprivation at the US's global reversals, actually goes for a home grown Samson Option. For example the entire South America is aligning with Russia. In Europe, Germany, France and Italy are irresistibly pulled towards Russia. And remember, Iran has a defense pact not only with Russia but also with China. Is the USA really prepared to take on the entire world??? Well, it seems the USA politicians will want to try.

Terrified US Aircraft Carrier Flees From Russian Subs To UK Safety

"...today that three Russian nuclear-powered Akula-class submarines belonging to the 24th Submarine Division of the Northern Fleet (NF) successfully “war-gamed” the American aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt [photo 2nd left] causing it to flee in terror towards the waters off the Hampshire coast in the United Kingdom.

To how this US aircraft carrier was “disabled” by the Northern Fleet’s attack submarines, this report says, was due to the Federations successful implementation of “magrav technology” weapons which had previously been used against American warships, and had “disabled” them too.

Magrav technology”, its import to note, was conceived by the Iranian-born nuclear engineer Mehran Keshe [photo 3rd left], but whose works are banned from public use in the United States under an Executive Order signed by President Obama on 23 April 2012.
The necessity of the US Navy to develop countermeasures against “magrav technology”, this report says, was clearly shown to them last year after Federation air forces completely disabled the feared AEGIS destroyer USS Donald Cook in the Black Sea.  So demoralizing was this attack against the USS Donald Cook, when it limped into a Romanian port for repairs, all 27 of its officers put in for reassignment and/or retirement.

UK Citizen Won Law Case That BBC Had Advance Knowledge of 9/11

A British judge ruled in favor of a UK citizen who said that the BBC’s premature announcement of the collapse of WTC Building 7 proved advance notice and constitutes a violation of the UK Terrorism Act as the BBC did not report to authorities that the BBC was told the building was down before the event happened.

Very interesting. Read here: http://www.globalresearch.ca/bbc-foreknowledge-of-911-collapse-of-wtc-building-seven-british-man-won-law-suit-against-bbc-for-911-cover-up/5438161

Under UK law the police have to investigate, but Washington’s sock puppet Cameron will invoke “national security” to block the police investigation of the BBC’s advance notice.
