Which American Cities Have The Biggest Income Inequality

Tyler Durden's picture

The top 5% of San Francisco households (the highest 'high income' city in a recent study on income inequality) earns over 47 times the income of the bottom 20% in Detroit (the lowest 'low income' city). As WSJ reports, a recent Brookings Institution study finds Atlanta, GA has the widest gap between rich and poor in the nation (followed by San Francisco, Boston, and Miami) and Virginia Beach, CA has the least income inequality.

Atlanta, GA remains the most un-equal large city in America and Virginia Beach, CA the least...

As Brookings concludes, these findings confirm that income inequality remains a salient issue in many big cities today.

*  *  *

So, it's time to buy back some more shares America...

not surpirsed NYC is near the top, it's like a Dickens novel here.

On a wealth inequality related note: If you happen to be in the city and are about to get on a subway car and you luckily find that there's no one in it (or only a few chinese people), there's a reason for that. Namely a bum who has shit his pants and the smell permeates the entire car.   If something looks too good to be true, it is.  So cram it in with the rest of the suits in the next car.

"What cities pay the most to the free shit army"

Exactly.  That's what causes the "horrors" of income inequality: Pay people to be stupid, not work, and vote for you.  Stop giving people "free" (but very costly to tax payers) gubmint shit and they will start earning incomes, reducing income inequality.  Problem solved.  Once again, gubmint **is** the problem.

I prefer to blame it on the worship of false gods leading the plunge, Rev Pied Jackson and the Rev. Piper Runt Sharpton. The downtrodden minorities will never achieve anything resemblimg bootstrapping by following those two charlatans  and as long as the govt provides disincentive loot of entrenched institutionalized freebies. Yeah. it's loot, looted from the productive.

Of course, that's only a part of the problem, though significant, but a growing percentage of whites are becoming worthless for similar reasons.

I was just brushing up on my early 17th century history the other day, and get this, they had INTERNATIONAL currencies and NATIONAL currencies side by side, at that time.  The national currencies were being debased so rapidly no one would accept them for international trade, so you had to use an accepted (gold or silver) international currency, like a Venetian gold ducat.

Now why were the national currencies being debased so rapidly?  To provide a source of seignorage/income for the 'sovereign' governments, of course!   But that was a long time ago...

Surely there are no pertinent lessons for our time in such an irrelevant yarn.

Recipe for increased income inequality: One heaping dose of "free trade," one big serving of H1-B workers, one big dollop of illegal immigrants, one giant portion of "campaign contributions" to help ensure these bad policies are enacted and never addressed, and there you have it! You've utterly annhilated the middle class, by using the simple magic of supply and demand; increase the supply of labor while simultaneously decreasing the demand for it. Congratulations!

Oh, and good luck finding people who can afford to buy the crap you sell, since you've taken everyone who works for a living and reduced their wages to the bare minimum needed to survive.

Atlanta, GA does indeed have a perfectly good baseball stadium, except that it's located smack-dab in the middle of a high-crime ghetto, driving away the suburban season ticket-holders the Braves need to remain profitable. The new stadium will be in suburban Cobb County, which is a much safer, cleaner and more upscale environment that can support the restaurants, retail and entertainment venues fans lack in and around Turner Field. As for the new football stadium, yeah, I  don't get the point of that one. They are literally moving across the street so it's hard to see what will be gained in return for all those taxpayer dollars. The Georgia Lottery is essentially a voluntary tax, and to those who volunteer I say "thank-you very much", though my kids chose out-of-state colleges, of course.

I live there and he's probably right. Atlanta, and Georgia in general, is experiencing a huge influx of blacks from other parts of the country, particularly the northeast and upper midwest. The area has the reputation of having a strong support network for blacks, providing a solid base for black culture, being steeped in civil rights history, and for being the home of several HBCUs. I read recently in an article lamenting the election losses of Michele Nunn (US Senate) and Jason Carter (GA Governor) that by 2016 the influx of democrat voters might well be enough to turn the state blue. Our house is going on the market next spring.

That's as may be, but the point is that in terms of income equality we were in much better shape for most of the 20th century and we thought it was permanent.

Now, if indeed even the poor are much better off now, then it would matter less that those who were merely rich before are now crazy rich.  But the trick is that it's the middle 2/3 who are worse off and continue in free fall, worse yet if you exclude government workers.

It's funny listening to leftists talk about income inequality and it's not fair yet they do not make the connection to the type of government that is running their state/city.

All these cities are ran by democrats yet the income inequality increases when the left runs their government. The Marxist run education system has been a complete success because people are so dumbed down that they believe that only if we tax more will prosperity occur. Absolute idiocy on parade.

The movie Idiocracy was so dead on balls accurate it should've been given some form of Nobel Prize for science or something. But that movie illustrates the failure of government and highlights the virtue of free thinking and liberty.

Oxfam reports that just 80 people possess the same quantity of wealth as 3.5 billion others.

Inequality = Privatization of the Earth

http://michael-hudson.com/2015/01/inequality-privatisation-of-the-earth/

These 80 then must be 43,750,000 times more productive than a single wage earner?

They are really working hard, to make goods and services, and put their goods/services on the market as prices.  They must not sleep.

Stop blaming the victims!

The private banker "credit" money system itself takes about 40% rents in the form of higher prices.   Monopoly and other rent activity probably takes another 30%.

The transfer of the earths wealth and human labor value, upward into a vertical pyramid, is really welfare for the rich.  These rich then usurp government, and when government malfunctions, they blame it and suggest that more privatization is needed.

Go ahead people, continue to be dupes.

So, I guess most of the poor walking around - maybe many are stupid, but they weren't born just so rentiers could mount them and have a party in their ass.

I live in Minneapolis, and this confirms personal observations. About 3 blocks south of my house is a monument in somebody's yard.  A WWI vet, Minneapolis firefighter, and black man, bought a house for himself and his family in about 1932.  A couple thousand whites rioted, because black people weren't "supposed" to live on that side of 46th st.  The cops and firefighters stood watch around his house to protect him.  His comment was something to the effect that when he was in the mudhole trench hell of WWI, nobody said a black man shouldn't be there, so why the hell couldn't he house his family where he could afford to.

Now Minneapolis is a very nice city, comparitively clean and functional, with public institutions and infrastructure that actually work.  Sure, I can complain, and do, but compared to almost any other metro are of its size, this is a a very nice place.  But we have the largest "Achievement Gap" between white kids and black kids in our schools, in the country.  Black poverty is concentrated in a couple areas of town, and is intractable.  If you took a map of schools doing poorly, and a map of per-capita income, and overlaid them, they'd be the same map, and the poor areas would be the near South side and the near North side, where the poor black people live.

The Mexicans and other Latin Americans are doing very well, as compared to the timeline of other immigrant populations.  The Hmongs have been having a rougher time, and the Somalis rougher still, but all of them are doing better in a mere couple of decades than the American Black population as a whole.  The Black middle class is fine, or at least as OK as the rest of us in the middle class.  We have a better economy, higher wages, better jobs etc., than America on average.  But our Black underclass is way behind and falling off the pace.

It's a very segregated city in many ways.  I'm not at all surprised to see we're on the high side of income inequality.  Those of us doing OK to very well outstrip the rest of the country for the most part.  Those of us not doing well are probably lagging all but the worst hell-holes in America.

AND YOU ALWAYS WILL, YOU F*CKING MORON!!  Because blacks, as an ethnic group,  can't compete on an equal footing with Whites in today's techno-industrial society. How many more trillions of dollars will have to be wasted on trying to bridge the unbridgeable 'achievement gap' before this fact sinks in?

And almost without exception the so-called black middle class are AA cyphers hired to fend off the attentions of Rev'und Al Shakedown or else they're Gub'ment employees.
