Another Middle East War Breaks Out: Saudis Begin Bombing Yemen, US Military Taking Action

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: *OBAMA AUTHORIZED LOGISTICAL AND INTELLIGENCE SUPPORT TO GULF, U.S. MILITARY TAKING MILITARY ACTION TO DEFEND SAUDI BORDER, TO DEFEND AGAINST HOUTHI VIOLENCE

John McCain & Lindsay Graham explain Obama's move...

U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) today released the following statement on Saudi Arabia leading an international coalition conducting air strikes against Iranian-backed separatists in Yemen:

Saudi Arabia and our Arab partners deserve our support as they seek to restore order in Yemen, which has collapsed into civil war.

We understand why our Saudi and other Arab partners felt compelled to take action. The prospect of radical groups like Al-Qaeda, as well as Iranian-backed militants, finding safe haven on the border of Saudi Arabia was more than our Arab partners could withstand. Their action also stems from their perception of America's disengagement from the region and absence of U.S. leadership.

A country that President Obama recently praised as a model for U.S. counterterrorism has now become a sectarian conflict and a regional proxy war that threatens to engulf the Middle East. What's worse, while our Arab partners conduct air strikes to halt the offensive of Iranian proxies in Yemen, the United States is conducting air strikes to support the offensive of Iranian proxies in Tikrit. This is as bizarre as it is misguided – another tragic case of leading from behind.

*  *  *

Earlier today we reported that, on very short notice, Saudi Arabia had moved heavy military equipment including artillery to areas near its border with Yemen, "raising the risk that the Middle East’s top oil power will be drawn into the worsening Yemeni conflict." In other words, Saudi Arabia was preparing for war.

Shortly thereafter, but before Yemen's president bravely fled the country over fears of the Houthi rebel advance, Yemen's foreign minister called for Arab military intervention against advancing Shiite rebels.

As we explicitly warned, "the conflict risked spiraling into a proxy war with Shi'ite Iran backing the Houthis, whose leaders adhere Shi'ite Islam, and Saudi Arabia and the other regional Sunni Muslim monarchies backing Hadi."

Moments ago all these warnings were borne out when Al-Arabiya reported that the latest middle-east war is now official after Saudi Arabia and Arab Gulf States had launched a bombing campaign against Yemen.

More details:

This is just the beginning:

and now the US is involved:

And tanks are crossing the border:

From Al-Arabiya:

Saudi Arabia’s Royal Air Force bombed the positions of Yemen’s Houthi militia, Al Arabiya News Channel reported early on Thursday.

Arab Gulf states had announced that they have decided to “repel Houthi aggression” in neighboring Yemen, following a request from the country’s President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.

In their joint statement Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait said they "decided to repel Houthi militias, al-Qaeda and ISIS [Islamic State of Iraq and Syria] in the country.”

The Gulf states warned that the Houthi coup in Yemen represented a “major threat” to the region’s stability.

It also accused the Iranian-backed militia of conducting military drills on the border of Saudi Arabia, a leading member of the GCC, with “heavy weapons.”

In an apparent reference to Iran, the statement said the “Houthi militia is backed by regional powers in order for it be their base of influence.”

The Gulf states said they had monitored the situation and the Houthi coup in Yemen with “great pain” and accused the Shiite militia of failing to respond to warnings from the United Nations Security Council as well as the GCC.

The statement stressed that the Arab states had sought over the previous period to restore stability in Yemen, noting the last initiative to host peace talks under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

As reported this morning, in a letter sent the U.N. Security Council and seen by Al Arabiya News, Hadi requested “immediate support for the legitimate authority with all means and necessary measures to protect Yemen and repel the aggression of the Houthi militia that is expected at any time on the city of Aden and the province of Taiz, Marib, al-Jouf [and] an-Baidah."

In his letter Hadi said such support was also needed to control “the missile capability that was looted” by the Houthi militias.

Hadi also told the Council that he had requested from the Arab Gulf states and the Arab League “immediate support with all means and necessary measures, including the military intervention to protect Yemen and its people from the ongoing Houthi aggression.”

To summarize: Saudi Arabia is now bombing a rebel force that has been armed by the US and is backed by Iran, even as the US is bombing an enemy of Iran in Iraq with the blessing of Saudi Arabia.

All in a day's work in the Middle East.

As for oil's reaction: after the algos initially appeared not to get the memo, they woke up...

True, but there is plenty of oil in Saudi Arabia. Those towel-heads might get some ideas about it... By the way, Iraq is already controlled by Iran where it matters.

The new Tim Osman? Hell, they have a whole herd of 'em. You mean to tell me you've never heard of that popular Wahhabi singing group The Osman Brothers? No doubt you'd recognize their latest hit single, Down By the Crazy River.

Of course, their singing is a capital offense, so to keep up appearances the Saudi government has to behead one of them every other week. But hey, that's why they have a whole herd of 'em.

Kinda ironic, Muhammad started all this bullshit in present day Saudi Arabia and through conquest of the sword it spread throughout the ME. Let's speculate: First, Yemen is positioned to cut off the southern end of the Red Sea and Saudi access to the Indian Ocean. The Saud's dominant religion is Sunni, the Houthi are Shia, diametrically opposed to each other. Saudi Arabia is one of the most tightly controlled governments extant today, and they can NOT be comfortable with all the overthrows happening in their neighborhood. Speaking of neighborhoods, all the countries which border SA are quiescent, except Iraq to the north (where they are contributing to the war there), and now Yemen to the south. And when the Alpha dog (USA) says attack, the Beta dogs rush in.

The house of suad is the dying empire. Their position has been increasing fragile over the last year. What better way to rally the faithful there than to invade and maybe conquer Yemen, a land that they think is rightfully theirs. This is a play by the Suads to consolidate power internally.

The US does not have the political challenges with Yemen that it has in Syria with Russia and so forth. Support by the US is a way to heal US Saudi relations in a backwater.

The House of Suad (a minority of a minority) and the House of America have a symbiotic co-dependent relationship. Which means when one gets sick it infects the other. And when one dies the other is not long for this world either.

Are you saying that the US /Saudi relations have not been stressed over the last several years with the Syrian debacle, Iranian sanction leniency, and now ISIS? And are you saying that the US would not be able to corrupt and use the a new government that would arise there? I don't think the US cares who is on the throne, as long as they are dependent on the US to protect them from Iran and now ISIS, in exchange for the petro dollar.

The House power struggle is a black swan waiting to happen. The new King is reported to have alzheimers and has appointed the first western educated heir. There are hundreds of grandsons from the 45 brothers of the 79 year old King that would like to change their positions. A power struggle is imminent with scores to be settled from over 20 years of the previous king's reign.

The House of Saud has many enemies and is beginning to act desperate, particularly with the American Empire faltering. The petrol dollar is no longer King currency and everyone knows this, thus the chess board is changing shape before our very eyes.

It is my understanding that the Saudis have a couple of years worth of welfare state money sitting there to keep the peasants placated. I'm essence, they can survive with their huge USD reserves for a couple years with oil prices around 50$, then they would start to lose the ability to feed everyone. Nothing foments revolution like an empty stomach. And none of those people really work. I spent some time in Bahrain, and met a lot of Saudis. All the wealth is concentrated at the top, yes, but they give the peasants enough crumbs to keep them from getting all 'revolution-y'. They run out of that, there are going to be a lot of private jets heading the the US and London.

I up voted you UP as soon as I read "If you are a dying empire"!

Around a decade ago, when I was reading up on the US "Deep State" and the US "Zionists", I came across a long range analysis of what Washington's aims were in the Middle East. Some people at that time suggested that the US was indeed a Dying Empire. They also suggested that Washington's goal in the Middle East would be an Israeli planned operation, aimed at the very long term goal of igniting a Middle East and World Wide war between all Shia nations and populations against all Sunni nations and populations. A global civil war of Islam with Islam, to turn the Sunni Shia divide into THE force that tears Islam to pieces and leaves Israeli as a Middle East Super Power, able to pick what ever pieces of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Sinai etc. that they want. The probelm possed was "How could the USA get the entire Muslim world to split into waring camps along Sunnia Shia lines.

Well, I read that a decade ago. I am starting to believe that this indeed was the US plan, and all moves by Washington in the Middle East has been to bring this about. Remember, it was the CIA, Mossad and MI6 working together inside conqured Iraq that set the Sunni Shia war going by a long series of terror bombings across Iraq, targeting first sunni then shia until both sides went to war. Way back in 2004 - 2005, Iraqi government soldiers stopped a truck in Southern Iraq that was filled with all types of explosives, and was driven and manned by British citizens dressed as Arabs. Most likely British SAS and MI6. The story even made it into Main Stream Media before being silenced and blacked out. At the time, it was believed that these men were part of the terror bombing campaign, and that they were in the south to bomb  Shia targets, making it appear to be Sunni doing it. All part of setting off this civil war of Sunni versus Shia.

I think we see now that this is and was the plan, and that it is working. Iraq parliament members have claimed that Iraqi army troops have seen and even shot down US and British Aircraft in the process of air dropping arms and supplies to ISIS in Iraq. At least a doaen such cases were pointed to by the Iraqi government. They claim the US is playing both sides, to fuel a deeper and more bloody war.

If you are a dying Empire (i.e. the USA) it is in your interest for every other potential enemy (especially your friends which you have been propping up for decades) to be in disarray and at war with each other.

Interesting point about the 'friends' of Vichy DC. The member states of the EU/NATO won't understand until Europe is burning again because their concepts of friend and enemy have been inverted.

DC may have supported it but I dont think that addresser the larger issues. I'll try to make mt point although I haven't formulated it nearly enough.

Using labels like DC, Tel Aviv, The City are descriptors of power centers that have no actual geographic manifestations. A century ago they may have applied, there were manifestations such as: Jekkyl Island, Newport, RI. , - places where the old power families would get away from the serffs.

With cotemporary transportation and communicatio technologies the planet has become much smaller. If one has a privat jet the ither side of the planet is  a few hours away.

The EU, the many wars, global chaos are engineered to be of benefit to some, and one may presume that they have a desire to survive.

What is workig behind global actions are transnational banking and other corporate structures that need to be labelled specifically and illuminated. The only positive aspect that I perceive in all this is this network thingy that's making possible conversations such as this on a global scale.

I hope this makes some sense, I'm not trying to be abstract. I sould have taken the blue pill.

Consider this take of our society, by Chris Hedges. I found it very telling:

…. It’s the end of literacy and the triumph of spectacle. What are our emotional and intellectual energies diverted to what? the kardashians -- I can hardly keep up with it, Anthony Weiner’s boxer shorts, you know?

Every week there's something else. And it's, go back and read the end of ancient Rome. Cicero, you know, in vain against the absurdities of a Nero and of the coliseum and the investment of emotional and intellectual life into the arena, and look at the entertainment industry, the way sports, professional sports, college sports, celebrity culture has, essentially, they flicker like the images on the wall of Plato’s cave.

And we're unable to see that the world's on fire.
