US-Armed Rebels Force Yemen President To Flee Country As Saudis Prepare For War

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: *PRESIDENT OF YEMEN SAID TO HAVE LEFT THE COUNTRY ON BOAT FROM ADEN, AP SAYS

As The BBC reports,

Yemen's President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi has fled his palace in Aden as Houthi rebels advance towards the city.

Gunfire could be heard around the city centre, and the rebels are reported to have seized the international airport.

On Wednesday morning, the Houthis moved to within 60km (37 miles) of the city after taking a key air base following fierce fighting with Hadi loyalists.

Government officials later said the president had been moved to a "secure location" but had not fled the country.

*  *  *

Previously we reported that in the latest "coup" for US foreign policy, the US had "lost" over $500 million in weapons in Yemen, until recently an Obama administration foreign policy "success story", following the abrupt evacuation of the US embassy there, all of which ended up in local rebel and al-Qaeda hands.

It didn't take long for the local Houthi rebels to put all these weapons to good use: as Reuters reports, Houthi forces in Yemen backed by allied army units seized a key air base on Wednesday and appeared poised to capture the southern port of Aden from defenders loyal to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, local residents said.

As a reminder this is the second time the Yemeni president, so close to Obama, will be forced to uproot and get out of Dodge, after his prompt "evacuation" from the capital Sanaa a month ago:

The Houthis and their military allies later advanced to within 40km (25 miles) of the city, where Hadi has been holed up since fleeing the group's stronghold in the capital Sanaa last month.

Yemen's slide toward civil war has made the country a crucial front in mostly Sunni Saudi Arabia's rivalry with Iran, which Riyadh accuses of sowing sectarian strife through its support for the Houthis.

Sunni Arab monarchies around Yemen have condemned the Houthi takeover as a coup and have mooted a military intervention in favor of Hadi in recent days.

The situation in Yemen is "fluid" but not looking good for the status quo: in Aden, heavy traffic clogged Aden as parents brought schoolchildren home and public sector employees obeyed orders to leave work. Eyewitnesses said pro-Hadi militiamen and tribal gunmen were out in force throughout the city

This happens as the northern militia alongside army units loyal to Yemen's powerful ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh have driven back an array of tribal fighters, army units and southern separatist militiamen loyal to embattled president Hadi.

The Iranian-backed Houthi Shi'ite militants took control of Sanaa in September and seized the central city of Taiz at the weekend as they move closer to Aden.

Houthi leaders have said their advance is a revolution against Hadi and his corrupt government, and Iran has blessed their rise as part of an "Islamic awakening" in the region.

Yemeni officials denied reports that Hadi had fled Aden.

Next up: yet another regional civial war involving a regime that was until recently so very loyal to Obama: a war which many blame on the former administration:

While Hadi has vowed to check the Houthi push south and called for Arab military support, his reversals have multiplied since heavy fighting first broke out in south Yemen on Thursday and the Houthis began making rapid advances southward.

In Houta, storefronts were shuttered and residents reported hearing bursts of machine gun fire and the bodies of fighters from both sides lying in the streets. Eyewitnesses said Houthi fighters and allied soldiers largely bypassed the city center and traveled by dirt roads to the southern suburbs facing Aden.

While the battle is publicly being waged by the Shi'ite Muslim Houthi movement, many Adenis believe that the real instigator of the campaign is former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, a fierce critic of Hadi. It was Saleh who was the author of the city's previous humiliation in 1994, when as president he crushed a southern secessionist uprising in a short but brutal war.

A body of army loyalists close to Saleh on Wednesday warned against any foreign interference, saying in a statement on Saleh's party website that Yemen would confront such a move "with all its strength."

Which is ironic because according to AP, what's left of the government is now actually calling for its neighbors to invade the country to restore peace and stability!

And as a follow up Reuters reports, the Saudi are indeed preparing for what appears to be the next MENA war, by moving heavy military equipment including artillery to areas near its border with Yemen, U.S. officials said on Tuesday, raising the risk that the Middle East’s top oil power will be drawn into the worsening Yemeni conflict.

The slide toward war in Yemen has made the country a crucial front in Saudi Arabia's region-wide rivalry with Iran, which Riyadh accuses of sowing sectarian strife through its support for the Houthis.

Just as Ukraine is a proxy war between Russia and the US, Yemen will be a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia:

The conflict risks spiraling into a proxy war with Shi'ite Iran backing the Houthis, whose leaders adhere to the Zaydi sect of Shi'ite Islam, and Saudi Arabia and the other regional Sunni Muslim monarchies backing Hadi.

The armor and artillery being moved by Saudi Arabia could be used for offensive or defensive purposes, two U.S. government sources said. Two other U.S. officials said the build-up appeared to be defensive.

One U.S. government source described the size of the Saudi buildup on Yemen's border as "significant" and said the Saudis could be preparing air strikes to defend Hadi if the Houthis attack his refuge in the southern seaport of Aden.

Another U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Washington had acquired intelligence about the Saudi build-up. But there was no immediate word on the precise location near the border or the exact size of the force deployed.

As a result, the Saudis would reather shoot first, ask questions later:

Saudi Arabia faces the risk of the turmoil spilling across its porous 1,800 km (1,100 mile)-long border with Yemen and into its Shi'ite Eastern Province where the kingdom's richest oil deposits lie.

“The Saudis are just really deeply concerned about what they see as an Iranian stronghold in a failed state along their border,” U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Matthew Tueller told Reuters on Monday at a conference hosted by the National U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce in Washington.

But a former senior U.S. official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the prospects for successful external intervention in Yemen appeared slim. He said Hadi’s prospects appeared to be worsening and that for now he was “pretty well pinned down.”

Slim or not, the countdown to another proxy war has begun. The biggest winner? These guys.

I'm gonna say a few things on this, ackowledging upfront that I have imperfect understanding.  If your read the Book, there are times and signs given, likely to play out as that *IS* the script, whether you are a "believer" or not.  Having said that, the establishment of world government comes before the Armageddon, and the seating of a false king (in ROme or probably Jerusalem) - to head the UN I assume.  So we're still a ways off.  Calamaities coming yes, and possibly million / billions - think it says 1/4 of population as a pre Armageddon- this is tribulation.  Viruses / plagues, earth shattering events (scalar EM - Haarp) - Note that Russia is supposedly ahead of the US in so called field of energetics.  If you read what Tesla was talking about it near defies the mind, nearly, but not entirely.  Pretty sure that stuff is for real.  The revealing period is happening now or will begin in earnest on a larger scale in the near future.

What will happen is that people will begin to see a picture emerge of their ancient past, theories, some true, some false, about what genesis actually means and what races rule the earth.  Many things have been hidden by royals, church elders and the builders.  The human race has been cut off from it's history - this is why the library at Alexandria was burnt, and why public schools have, at least in the past millenia or two, focussed on Greek and ROman cultures, cutting off visibility into Ancient egyptian and pre-flood activities.  Many will be deceived and fall pray to Luciferian beliefs (for they contain much truth).  But through the prophets, God said do not worship the host of heaven, as the rulers of the earth do - believingh it gives them authority and sustains their powers.  The truth is force of arms and deception sustains their powers.  The concept of the "Son of Man", as was later depicted as dying of the (astro-theological) cross is noteworthy.  The saving of mankind is the abondonment of the astro-theological based religions hiding behind facade of most modern belief systems - The Christ concept is to abandon such false worship and get back to a natural way of life - harmony with creation, Love. False religion has helped box in peoples minds :-(  Save what praise you want to give for God Almighty, not celestial bodies or the works of your hands.  Christ *is* the *Word* Of God, think about it.

Strange Propaganda being used in regards to Yemen.

The Houthi are Zaidi Shia group and are enemies of  al-Qaeda, ISIS or Islamic State. It is a bit like saying Oliver Cromwell was a follower of the Pope. Who and why the misinformation, based on previous form the CIA and Deep State actors spring to mind. Poorly aimed propaganda and a blinkered view as the people the USA should be bombing is the Saudis who funded the 911 bombers with full knowledge of the target. Really the PR guys for the Deep State should be water-boarded till they up their game it is pitiable  that this is the best lies that the CIA can spin.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

i've always concluded that it is because stability is the enemy of a u.s. gov. middle east destabilization policy for the region, and that goes for russia as well, if you look at ukraine.

if regions are destabilized, they can't oppose you. secular stable arab governments are a threat to global hegemony. global corporations don't want sovereign governments that can oppose their wishes.

Sorry but the logic doesn't work wholesale. You can destabilize a single particular regime and control the outcome only when you have reliable neighboring allies in the region. When you wreck an entire global region you are going to completely lose control of it.

My guess is, our middle eastern policy got hijacked by the Saudis sometime in the mid-seventies. The idiotic Muslim "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" logic seems to be driving our middle eastern policy. The problem with that is, Muslim nations are so badly divided along ethnic, tribal, and Islamic sectarian lines that total chaos is the only logical outcome once you start playing by their retarded and insane rules.

i think the u.s. state department in reality is quite ok with chaos as long as it keeps them in power and keeps russia and china, iran etc.....weak. it may be backfiring, but i think that is what has been going on. total chaos is perhaps less ideal then a perfect puppet state, but at least it prevents russia and china for gaining power in the region. seems as if there is also some changing of sides going on....with iran for example.

The Saudi's used to fund Pakistan. China has that role now (perhaps as a favour to BRICS partner India?). The take-over seemed to coincide with the Pakistani realisation that they had been made the scape-goats for Saudi involvement (planning, operations control, financing and carrying out) in 9/11.

Which is why Pakistan has been targetted so violently by the CIA created taliban in recent years.

That is what Kissinger wanted to do during OPEC embargo '73. INvade Saudio oilfields and "Internationalize" them under United Nations control.

It was decided that instead, as long as the Sauds and Shah in Iran recycled petrodollars and bought US goods they could keep their "ill gotten gains"

Now that the dollar is collapsing, it is obvious Saudi ARabia are in play. Let's see how good those fat fucks are at actual fighting. My guess is you will see China v. Vietnam '79 where the little guy pounded the shit out of the bully on the block.

Why does everybody assume the "lost" weapons was a mistake?

US "loses" weapons.  Jihadis take weapons and run amok across various ME countries, disrupting societies and domestic industrial activity.  Result?  Oil stays in the ground, safe and secure for when the US decides to come and take it back.

When US invaded Iraq they destroyed ALL infrastructure except the Oil Ministry and wells/pipelines.  Fuck the infrastructure and you halt dometic resource consumption.  MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

ISIL (ISIS whateva) running around blowing shit up is just the Iraq strategy on a larger scale.

The US Government does not want or care about Democracy.  Not for it's own people and certainly not for a bunch of people on the other side of the world.

They just want to secure the Oil and maximize the amount of Oil they secure and control.

The sooner the Saudis are eliminated the better.

It is the Saudis with their poisonous, 7th century, intolerant wahhabi doctrines who have been funding the increasing promotion of islam in the west, the building of mosques and the radicalisation of islam.

If ever there was a regime to wipe out of the middle east the Saudis must rank as at least second.

You can't accuse the Saudis of "radicalizing" Islam; if you read the Koran, you'll see that "radicalism" is built right into the text. It is the only religion in the world where the doctrine of killing unbelievers is written into the clear text of the foundational document.

There is violence in the Old Testament, but it is descriptive, not prescriptive.

The Koran has very clear PRESCRIPTIVE text promoting the slaughter of infidels.

And the New Testament, which is the foundational text for Christianity, abjures violence almost entirely.

Don't take my word for it; check the three sources for yourself. The texts are easily findable online.

well even if that were true,  i still think somehow its a mistake to be debating about the details of the koran, when we know for a fact that secular arab nationalism has been seen as a threat, and radical groups, from al-qaeda, muslim brotherhood, or any of the groups fighting to overthrow ghadaffi or assad have in fact been supported by the business suit wearing west. radical groups in the middle east have been used for decades to undermine our perceived enemies, not so different then the death squads used in central america to overthrow regimes there. they are also used to scare our population into giving up rights in the war on terror etc.....many birds with a single stone are thereby brought down unfortunately.

Man, the US "Deep State" sure makes a lot of hay from the fact that Americans don't know the difference between Sunni and Shi'ite.

The only allies "Al Quaeda" and "Wahhabi" Sunnis have are Saudi Arabia, the Gulf Despotisms (Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE), Israel and the US.  Sunnis outnumber Shi'ites globally about 10:1.  The Shi'ites are Iran, a majority of Iraqis, some Syrians, some Lebanese, some Yemenis (including the Houthis) and a few other groups.

The US, following the Wolfowitz Doctrine and Brzezinski's "Grand Chessboard" strategy, are stoking up and fanning the flames of a war to the death between Sunnis and Shi'ites, taking first one side and then the other.  Obviously, this move was meant to prolong the war, and open a new front on the Arabian Peninsula.  The goal is to destroy all civil society in such a geo-strategically important and resource-rich part of the world.  The same policies are directing our efforts to foster an all-out war in Ukraine, and to foment wars in Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, and the other "-stan" countries.

Religion is only the easy tool at hand to start these wars.  The intent is to create an entire region in chaos, where the only powers who can do what they want are those which can project military power anywhere in the world at any time.  Oh, wait.  There's only one such power?  How interesting.  What does that fact tell us?

Why would Saudi Arabia be "next?"  The Shi'ite areas of Saudi are pretty far from Yemen near Bahrain and the Gulf.  Iran seems to concentrate their efforts on areas where local Shi'ites nurse grievances.  Iranian intervention in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Bahrain makes sense.  And from Bahrain, perhaps the Shi'ite regions of Saudi Arabia.  The Yemeni Shi'ites they already seem to be supporting but I don't see how that expands much past Yemen, though that can't be good news for the Sunni "Al-Quaeda" groups.

Interesting theory by Jim Willie www.goldenjackass.com that Saudi Royals are willing to sell their oil for pennies, once it is all gone, they will evacuate their Saudi Arabian desert "Kingdom"and emigrate to their new prearranged resorts and so really don't care what happens to Saudi Arabia.  Its just useless sand after the oil is gone.

Then again, why would they spend all kinds of money to buy weapons if they weren't intent on defending their land? If so for how long?

I am beginning to think the same thing.

Here is what I understand: the Saudi's are pumping and selling as much oil as they can. The US is storing as much oil as it can.

If the US is storing this oil in expectation of the taps being shut off, why shut down a pipeline from the tar sands?

Don't give me that wheeze about the environment. There has to be a reason why one would be storing up all the oil one can get ones hands on, yet not be attempting to maintain the flow of oil from the friendly and stable neighbour to the north.

Typical wikipedia researcher.

Try looking at the US invasion of Canada in the War of 1812. The one where we burned their capital to the ground.

The one that caused Canada to deliberately move the capital to its current location because it is a more defensible location than the previous site.

Plus, at the time, Canada was a province of the world's mightiest empire. It wasn't the Canadians but rather the British who put up the fight in both wars.

What do you suppose Canada's chances would be in a modern-day rematch, hmmm?
