Another Oligarch Preaches To The Peasants: Charlie Munger Says "Prepare For Harder World"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

While several exceptionally wealthy and successful people have admirably come out and spoken passionately of the broken nature of financial markets and the political system, as well as the threat this poses to society in general (think Paul Tudor Jones and Nick Hanauer), there have been several examples of oligarchs coming out and conversely demonstrating their complete disconnect from reality, as well as a disdain for the masses within a framework of incredible arrogance.

I’ve commented on such figures in the past, with the two most popular posts on the subject being:

A Billionaire Lectures Serfs in Davos – Claims “America’s Lifestyle Expectations are Far Too High”

An Open Letter to Sam Zell: Why Your Statements are Delusional and Dangerous

The latest example comes from Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s right hand man, who tends to demonstrate an incredible capacity for verbal diarrhea. Recall his commentary on gold: “gold is a great thing to sew onto your garments if you’re a Jewish family in Vienna in 1939.”

Screen Shot 2015-03-26 at 12.37.58 PM

Moving along, Mr. Munger provided some typically insensitive commentary at an event yesterday in Los Angeles. Bloomberg reports that:

(Bloomberg) — Charles Munger, who became a billionaire while helping Warren Buffett build Berkshire Hathaway Inc., predicted it’s going to get tougher for consumers to maintain their standard of living in coming decades.

“We should all be prepared for adjusting to a world that is harder,” Munger, 91, said Wednesday at an event in Los Angeles, in response to a question about the increase in the size of the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet since the 2008 financial crisis. “You can count on the purchasing power of money to go down over time. And you can almost count that you’ll have more trouble in the next 50 years than the last.”

“Somebody my age has lived through the best and easiest period that ever happened in the history of the world — the lowest death rates, the highest investment production, biggest increases in most people’s standards of living,” Munger said. “If you’re unhappy with what you’ve had over the last 50 years, you have an unfortunate misappraisal of life.”

There’s a staggering amount of offensiveness in such few words. First off, he says that: “We should all be prepared for adjusting to a world that is harder.” Who is included in the word “all” here. Certainly not his fellow oligarchs, who already bailed themselves out in incredible fashion and have been spending the years since protecting themselves from the horrible future they’ve created. No, he is speaking to the masses, the plebs, the serfs, the peasants, the ruled. He is telling them tough luck, just try to avoid cannibalism in the future. Meanwhile, if you get close to my castle I’ll have you shot down like a dog.

He then shows his cards once again with the statement: If you’re unhappy with what you’ve had over the last 50 years, you have an unfortunate misappraisal of life.”

50 years of life? What about those us who haven’t had the pleasure of being alive so long. What about the millennials, the teenagers, and the babies being born right now? He couldn’t give a shit, which is exactly why he and his buddies went out of their way to protect the wealthy, older generations with their bailouts in 2008/09. Conveniently, this is the exact demographic he belongs to.

His comments are particularity striking when you take them in context of yesterday’s article from the Wall Street Journal: Executive Pensions Are Swelling at Top Companies. If you think these guys are going to be dealing with the “hard times” ahead like everyone else, think again.

From the WSJ:

Top U.S. executives get paid a lot to do their jobs. Now many are also getting a big boost in what they will be paid after they stop working.

Executive pensions are swelling at such companies as General Electric Co., United Technologies Corp. and Coca-Cola Co. While a significant chunk of the increase is the result of arcane pension accounting around issues like low interest rates and longer lifespans, the rest reflects very real improvements in the executives’ retirement prospects.

New mortality tables released last fall by the American Society of Actuaries extended life expectancies by about two years. That, as well as low year-end interest rates, helped push pension gains higher than many companies had expected. The result is much higher current values for plans with terms like guaranteed annual payouts, which are no longer offered to most rank-and-file workers.

Note that these guaranteed annual payouts are no longer offered to most rank-and-file workers. There are peasants and there are oligarchs. The peasants are the ones Munger speaks to.

GE Chief Executive Jeff Immelt’s compensation rose 88% last year to $37.3 million. Meanwhile, excluding $18.4 million in pension gains, his pay actually fell slightly to $18.9 million.

In all, Mr. Immelt’s pension is valued at about $4.8 million a year for life. The company puts its current value at about $70 million, up from around $52 million a year ago.

At Lockheed Martin Corp., CEO Marillyn Hewson’s total pay rose 34% to $33.7 million last year, with $15.8 million of that stemming from pension gains. An extra column in the proxy statement’s compensation table strips out those gains, showing her pay up about 13% to $17.9 million.

Executive pensions generally don’t consume the attention that pensions for the rank and file do. For years, as costs of traditional pension plans have risen amid low interest rates and longer lifespans, big companies have been closing them to new employees or even freezing benefits in place, often continuing with only a 401(k) plan for all but the oldest workers.

Last June, Lockheed Martin told its nonunion employees that it would stop reflecting salary increases in their pension benefits starting next year, and that the benefits would stop growing with additional years of work starting in 2020.

Just in case you needed further evidence of how all “public” policy, especially the actions of the Federal Reserve, are specifically designed to enrich the 0.01% at the expense of everyone else, let’s take a look at some excerpts from a CNBC article published today: Fed Policies Have Cost Savers $470 Billion:

The Federal Reserve’s efforts to stimulate the U.S. economy after the financial crisis ended up costing savers nearly half a trillion dollars in interest income, according to report released Thursday.

Since the central bank dropped interest rates to near zero at the end of 2008, savers have labored under plain-vanilla bank accounts and money market funds that have yielded close to nothing. Critics have long said the Fed’s quantitative easing efforts have boosted asset prices, particularly in the stock market, but exacted severe costs across other parts of the economy.

If QE really helps everyone, then why has income inequality exploded? The answer, of course, is that QE picked winners and losers. Naturally, the winners have been the oligarchs, and the losers have been everyone else.

Well, at least they're no longer even attempting to lie & obfuscate about protecting the national currency and having a "strong dollar" be a source of everlasting value to the wage serfs...

“You can count on the purchasing power of money to go down over time. And you can almost count that you’ll have more trouble in the next 50 years than the last.”

...and the inquisitive nature of financial reporters & journalists has been replaced with the fawning cheerleading for governments everywhere to issue forth "tax credits" to smooth the publics plight, to salve the daily wound inflicted by that burning sensation, from one of the very sources that creates the problem in the first place, doctor .gov.

I fully expect (long after I'm gone) for one of these bastards (public or private oligarch) to actually say: "You must be fully invested in our version of crony-socialism or your un-American...nay, a traitor!"

And I only say American, every central bank and national government on the face of the planet is doing the very same thing, under the pretext that you can't have a strong currency and be competitive at the same time, which is another lie.

I agree Zaphod he makes the same points a lot of us do that comment here. However, as a billionaire he should learn better wordsmithing skills. He is a bit too blunt for a man in his position in the spotlight. I don't agree the next entire 50 will be worse than the last. I believe by 2025 we will be in a true global recovery, unless someone gets stupid and pushes the big red button. As a Gen-X'er I have certainly had to adjust.

In the end its evolution, I look at it not just as evolve or die but what satisfaction can I gain out of learning and overcoming big obstacles to become a better competitor. How to swim with the sharks so to speak but add value in the process. I admit it isn't easy! It is easier to steal right now then add value.

I was looking at food franchises the other day. Wild Wings franchise has a 94% failure rate! Pita Pit on the other hand has 17% and is on the SBA Fastrack program for funding. What's my point? There are still many people that will not educate themselves and do no research meaning you can still work smarter and make out better than most but it will take some effort that probably cuts into your free time. And this next decade expect gains to come a lot slower than what people were used to in the 80's and 90's meaning practicing being patient and considering decade long investments verse five.

Getting angry at Munger for saying something arrogant is like getting angry at grass being green.

I think it's very interesting that he's willing to speak publicly on this and say what I generally believe to be true.

I think it's actually decent of him to offer solid advice to those who most need it -- people like me who aren't rich.

SO....he's telling a half-truth. And never forget, a half-truth is still a lie.

And Munger's minions are now so skilled at pitting the poor and fading middle class against each other, that never a hair on Charlie's head will be touched.  Your fantasies of his painful death are just your opiate.  As things get worse, we will all be begging Charlie's police to protect us from each other.

He is right, no doubt about that. I've had the same thought with my young son. I'm scared of what the world will look like when he is my age(30). Hell, I'm scared of what it will look like in 5. And it's funny that munger made that comment about gold being useful " if you were a a Jew in Vienna in 1939 sewing it into your garments". Like that's a bad thing. If that isn't the best endorsement for owning some, I don't know what is. They sure as hell didn't bother taking paper money with them. If there is ever something going on in our country that bad, you can rest assured your pieces of paper will be completely useless once you cross that border(if you are lucky enough to cross one). They sewed gold into their garments because gold is the ULTIMATE currency, recognized everywhere.

This motherfucker won't die a peaceful, natural death if there is a just god.

There's a reason the ultra wealthy are building private walled compounds in remote areas, underground bunkers and special fortified 'safe rooms' in their mansions.

Soon we'll see a resurgence in actual castle building.

It's pretty obvious actually.  Drive along the back roads in places like Greenwich Connecticut.  All those old quaint colonials with low new england stone walls that served generations of America's wealthy have been replaced with huge castle like chateaus surrounded by 6 foot high stone walls with iron gates.   Some real kick ass surveillance and security systems with private security response.  Much less 'accessible' and 'neighbor friendly'

TheReplacement    Yes but when the younger generations figure out how badly they've been screwed by the older generations (Greatest and Boomers primarily) they are going to want to expedite things a bit.

Also, the people looking to inherit or otherwise gain (corporations paying pensions) might also want to expedite things a bit.

----

Okay, then let's take your point.

Let's look back at the various revolutions. The majority of oligarchs got away unscathed. In even the most recent revolts in various countries ( Egypt for example), yes the top dog Mubarak got killed, but most of the other politicians and bankers? NO

What about another example Libya? Yea, Gaddafi got killed so then other powerful tribes took over, the new oligarchs. How about the current Ukraine?

Guess how those younger generations you speak of are doing? Basically the same as before. Nothing changed. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. You are still the slave.

Yes, people will fight for their survival. But even in that extreme situation, they align themselves with some more powerful group or person to achieve their goals of survival. This is basic and everyone should understand this. This is why we have had oligarchs for hundreds of years and nothing has changed.

If you don't see that, you become part of the problem because you are recycling the same old shit. I keep asking and looking for a new solution. I don't want to go to socialism. So far I don't have an answer.

I agree, it's not the message, per se, it's who it is coming from. My 80 year old grandfather would say the same thing, and he hardly qualifies as an oligarch. He was wise to their little game, though. He felt something coming and cashed out a few months before this last crash, everything they owned, except him and my grandmother ech kept one stock each. My dad thought they were crazy for doing it, but they didn't lose half their money when they were in their 70s. He hasn't gotten back in either.

In all, Mr. Immelt’s pension is valued at about $4.8 million a year for life. The company puts its current value at about $70 million, up from around $52 million a year ago.

Munger’s point is that non-oligarchs need to be happy with what they’ve had because they’ll soon be asked to pony-up more of their property and freedom to the ruling class.

The good news is that this oligarch dream won’t happen, and even now, the strains of supply and demand are in an economy threatening with every trend to return to a value-based, private property, free enterprise America. All of those charts we see are fighting against a paper economy, against the lies; underneath all of this is a struggle to get rid of the pretense, the fake market, to return to something Americans can depend on. And we will have it.

And that’s why all of the big talk, from the president, on down…

The message for Munger et al. is: You are the ones who should be happy with your past winnings, because “The times,” Bob Dylan would say, “they are a changin.”

Hope you are right. I have been watching this collapse thing since 2004-5. Back then, I would have never dreamed we had 10 years.

Just sayin'.

The Fed is using the money it steals to buy up America’s means of production. The Fed must be destroyed. Unless the Fed is destroyed, there can be no Republic.

These criminals are destroying the greatest economic miracle the world has ever known. When economic collapse of the current system comes, it will not signal despair, but renaissance.

The tsunami of demand is building where people want more dependable futures, to be able to work and to have value for that work. They don’t want to be slaves. It’s too important to be free, to build commerce, to invent, to shoot for the stars… If they are denied these opportunities much longer, they will fight.

The American people will force the kind of world they want. How do I know, MsCreant? I hear it, every day, in their voices…  It’s something we’ve lost and we can regain it!

JR, what you wrote above is quite inspirational. Will you run for president? You'd get my vote.

Keep dreaming.

If he has $100 million and loses 50%, he still has $50 million. He does fine for retirement

If you have $500,000 and lose 50% you only have $250,000 to retire on. Are you hoping Social Security is solvent?

And sadly, most Americans don't even have $500,000. A great number live pay check to pay check with very little savings.

No one has ever seen Yellen and Munger together in the same place.  This must mean Munger is actually Yellen with a wig.

"We should all be prepared to adjust to a world that is harder". Said a dusche bag who is 91. Just how far out in the future is he prepared for? The Old fart lives a lifestyle that would make king Soloman blush and it matters not to him what happens to the rest of us plebs.

Why am I almost sure that his lifestyle is more down on earth than yours and if you would have only a tenth of his wealth, you would surpass his lifestyle by multitudes?

I hapen to totally 100% agree with the guy. The Middle Class™, the various medications, the antibiotics, the abundance of cheap food, this is ALL COMING TO A QUICK END. The Middle Class™ is an abberation, NOT the norm. It's quickly becoming a thing of the past. The antibiotics are quickly losing their effectiveness and the old diseases your grandparents were dying from are also coming back, stronger than ever. The decades from 1950s to 1980s were the best decades humanity has ever known.

The authors point is it ain't gonna change for the likes of him. His kind have looted so much from the rest of us while we were not watching that it really is a "you all better get used to it." He made what is gonna happen to "you all" happen. Resources were squandered.

It ain't about the facts of what's coming. What is in debate are the facts of what is coming for his kind.

At 91, he may not have all that much longer, unless he really is an ugly vampire thing.

That is so fucked up, to make a vampire out of an almost dead carcass like that.

I know the young attractive ones make for better romantic novels and moving pictures. Perhaps reality truly is a hard mistress.

THEY want me here... you have no idea.
