Germanwings Co-Pilot "Deliberately Destroyed" Airplane, Identified As 28-Year Old German Citizen

Tyler Durden's picture

In one of the most chilling segments of this morning's press conference describing what was found on the cockpit voice recorder, screams were heard from passengers and crew as the realisation of what was about to happen struck them all. Prosecutor Brice Robin's findings state that when the German Captain left the cockpit - following what appeared to be - the 28-year-old German co-pilot (who was alive to the end) refused to re-open the door and began an "intentional", "controlled", and "steady" descent as he "seems to have sought to destroy the plane." Nothing indicates that this was a terrorist incident.

As The NY Times reports,

“At this moment, in light of investigation, the interpretation we can give at this time is that the co-pilot through voluntary abstention refused to open the door of the cockpit to the commander, and activated the button that commands the loss of altitude,” the prosecutor, Brice Robin, said.

He said it appeared that the co-pilot’s intention had been “to destroy the aircraft.” He said that the voice recorder showed that the co-pilot had been breathing until before the moment of impact, suggesting that he was conscious and deliberate in his actions. He said that his inquiry had shown that the crash was intentional.

The WSJ identifies the co-pilot as Andreas Lubitz...

The co-pilot of the Germanwings flight that crashed in the French Alps on Tuesday was Andreas Lubitz, 28, of Montabaur, according to a flight club where he was a member.

“Andreas became a member of the club as a youth to fulfill his dream of flying,” the LSC club said in a death notice on its website.

“He fulfilled his dream, the dream he now paid for so dearly with his life,” the club said. It said he was the co-pilot of the flight. A member of the flight club identified him to The Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

I'm wondering if the co-pilot fucked up.  If he was bat shit crazy enough to crash the plane, I'd guess that he would have wanted to crash into a big city.  Something between Nice and Dusseldorf.  Perhaps he decended too quickly.

As I understand it, the co-pilot entered the necessary commands for the "controlled" descent after he was alone in the cockpit, suggesting he was alive and responsive at the time.  His regular breathing did not suggest any medical condition to the investigators.

The point of impact - it must be said, even emphasized - is about 130 km, 5-6 minutes of flight time, to the three major nuclear sites: Tricastin, Marcou and Créas.

How would have reacted French Air Forces after the radar contact with Airbus was lost in mid-air eight minutes before the crash, faced with such a destructive danger?

The reason why the cockpit door was open during flight was so that the passengers could see the pilots and feel secure knowing they were being well cared for. It is really eerie to be in a plane and see that locked door. I hate it even though I know that 90% of the flight is automated. It takes the humanity out of flying.

The locked cockpit door is a bullshit contrivance to make people think the government did something about 9/11, just like putting 100k fat black people in charge of airport security.

What pisses me off more than anything is that my son will never get invited up to the cockpit by the captain to "fly" the plane. Being a kid today sucks, probably the worst time in modern history to be young.

Reminds me of a story. My son and I were walking the railroad tracks one day not too far away from were the trains stopped to get loaded up with grain. Well a train started coming down the track slowly towards us, and when it got near it slowed to a stop. The engineer walked out of the front door and invited my son and me on board to check out the inside. My son, who was four at the time, loved it. He got to sit in the engineer's seat and blow the horn. He thought it was amazing. I'll never forget that day.

I await for them to say he converted to Islam and when they say that it'll be considered an act of terrorism. If they don't say that and he is a Christian then I am going to proclaim all Christians want to crash planes.

I wonder if this is legit or if it was shoddy airline safety inspection and they are going to use the pilot as the excuse.

US and Egypt split on fatal plane crash
Suicidal pilot brought down flight 990 killing 217 people, insist NTSB sources, not a mechanical fault in the plane

EgyptAir flight 990 crash: special report
Michael Ellison in New York
Thursday 8 June 2000 21.11 EDT Last modified on Wednesday 1 October 2014 04.02 EDT

American investigators of a plane crash that killed 217 people last year are wrapping up their inquiry and may approve their conclusions without public hearings for fear of exacerbating strained relations with Egypt.
According to the New York Times, experts at the National Transportation Safety Board are more convinced than ever that a suicidal pilot caused the crash of EgyptAir 990 after it left New York last October.

But the Egyptian government is pressing the theory that the plane, a Boeing 767, developed a mechanical fault in its tail.

...
The investigators still believe that the words of the plane's 59-year-old co-pilot on the cockpit voice recorder were those of a man saying a farewell prayer. As the aircraft was heading for the Atlantic, 50 miles off Nantucket Island, Gamil al-Batouti said: "Tawakilt ala Allah" or "I put my faith in God". Then the captain, Ahmed al-Habashi, who is thought to have left the cockpit, returned to say "pull up" or "help me".

Egyptians say that the Americans misunderstood the co-pilot's words, a Muslim prayer. "This prayer would never be said in times of crisis," ...

Who has to pay damages if it was a suicide ?

Who has to pay damages if co-pilot fell asleep after being out all night chasing hookers and blow?

If the co-pilot fell asleep with his headphones on during that half hour while the Pilot was out taking a shit would he be able to hear banging on the door or would the mono-tone voice of some distant air-controller's voice be weaved into what ever he was dreaming at the time?

The co-pilot had to have disabled the over-ride to allow entry by code into the cockpit.  They also stated it sounded like he wedged the door closed just to be sure.

Honestly, if this was a grievance with Lufthansa, this would be one hell of a way to cause chaos.  I mean, how do you even protect against this?  What do you even call it?  It is one thing to screen people for terrorist ties, changes in behavior, etc but when you have seemingly lucid, sane pilots crashing planes for no apparent reason it is just chilling.  I mean, they already have safeguards (a door code) to help prevent what happened but it sounds like the co-pilot found a way to wedge the door shut.  Not much you can do if a pilot is determined to crash the plane.

Historically speaking in the age of flight, Germans have killed a lot of people and wrecked a lot of planes...Japs gave it a good go, and a fellow can appreciate the effort, but they are just too respectful of mechanical things to make it a Genetic trait, it was more of a statement than anything...Muslims are relative newcomers to this phenomenon...However, if you cross a German with a Muslim, now you got something!

If this guy really did what they are saying, it will be quite obvious.

Modern aircraft not only have a black box, they have something called a QAR,  which downloads all aircraft parameters to the company HQ.

If this guy had a seizure in the cockpit, he could have knocked the autopilot off by hitting the side stick and started a descent. That's just giving him the benefit of the doubt,  which the moron press never does.

If he was using the autopilot to descend, he would have had to wind down the altitude and pulled a knob to start the aircraft down, what is called, Open Descent,  in Airbus jargon.   He would also probably have deployed the speed brakes or wound up the speed.  All would be sure bets it was deliberate, and easy to discover on a QAR or black box.

The other option is manual flight, autopilot and maybe auto thrust off, easily picked up by the same.

The cockpit door also has a pass  code for entry, and a beeping sound in the cockpit, with a cockpit camera to I'D who wants access in the foward gally.

To stop someone from entering the cockpit, the pilot must pull a switch to over ride,  denying access.  If he does not the door automatically opens after 30 seconds.

The Co-Pilot was a German citizen.... Naturalized? Where was his birth? There is more to this story than meets the eye when reading their dry and washed comments... Wanted to destroy the plane,,, lol. yea, right.

Note how government that fixes everything causes everything. Years ago when people were still treated as citizens and not domesticated farm animals they carried weapons. Almost zero terrorism and the cockpits were open.

Fast forward to today. Like in the streets only the criminals have guns, badged or otherwise. The locked cockpit shows the absolute height, and stupidity of the security meme. Next we will hear about requiring more than one person in the cockpit at all times. Used to be that there were always three counting the navigator. Apparently they have eliminated another position for their sacred profit margin and stock prices.

Armed law abiding citizens would eliminate well over ninety percent of possible plane take overs which eliminate the need for locked cockpit doors.Of course in todays fearful and security conscious society this would never fly. Citizens today have no problem putting their lives and the lives of their loved ones in total control of one or two people and government goes out of it's way to assist in assuring the cattle are disarmed and completely vulnerable.

So fly the friendly skies.

PS: Where is the data from that long forgotten Malaysian flight that crashed in Ukraine? How about the ATC tapes of said flight. The speed of 'decoding' this German tragic crash is testament we are being bullshitted once again by our beloved governments. But, hey,,, we like being bullshitted.

MH17 was a clusterfuck beyond imagination. We will never know what actually happened. The air powers that be were immediatley searching the Straits of Malacca and for 12-24 hours after. Right down the hill from my abode. I watched their efforts.

I suspect many things, but that amounts to zero.

This Germanwings disaster seems to have had  a deliberate cause. Look into the copilot and pilot's lives to find the cause. One should not overlook complicity between the two as well as the identities of all passengers and any threats to them.

It's too soon to assume 'religious finaticism' and we should hope that's not the cause.

Obvious what happened, he was either being jilted by his lover, lover's sex yet unknown, but his lover maybe was on the flight.

OR, far more likely, he worked at the Post Office while in pilot school.

Seriously, it seems to me that a device palm print of the Captain should override everything else, or C4 explosive secretly stashed somewhere outside the cockpit. Yeah, I know, blowing up stuff is risky at 35,000ft but so is a power struggle with a mountain. I suspect this is like a county bureaucrat finally putting in a stop light or round-about at a dangerous intersection after a few fatal accidents have occurred.

In case anyone didn't realize it, when you enter a passenger plane you are, plain and simple, putting your life in the hands of strangers who you know nothing about- absolutely nothing. You are giving them the power of life and death over you, for the duration of the flight.

I have driven forklifts and telehandlers in the past for a company and still do from time to time. On occasion, a manbasket is attached to forks on these devices. I've been the operator on them when I haul a man up a distance to change lighting as a primary example. He's quite safe as he is wearing a fall harness. I understand them from my days working at height.

You are correct that pilots have the power of life and death, as indeed I'm granted the same somber responsibility each time whenever I do this, but you're missing out that if (and each time) you drive a motor vehicle, you're essentially doing the SAME THING!

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to ponder why in the hell a pilot who has given so much to achieve his goal of commercial flight would do such a vile, evil act. It makes reality TV such a "meh!" thing in comparison.

Re the motor vehicle analogy, I disagree. When I'm on the road, I am piloting my vehicle. Yes, there are many other vehicles being piloted around me, but I can take evasive maneuvers to avoid a lone lunatic seeking to kill me with her vehicle. In the airplane, we are all utterly helpless.

3 theories:

A) He just broke up in a relationship and would rather take his own life rather than live on

B) How are the working conditions at Germanwings?  I assume pretty good b/c Germany has strong benefits for workers, but have they cut back anything recently?  I would think that American/Asian pilots (who get paid dogshit compares to what the airline execs make) would be more apt to do this due to the "going postal" factor of stress amidst stagnating wages, rising living costs, etc.

C) The third (and most scary) theory - this was politically motivated, and someone thought someone on that plane had to go, other passengers be damned.

My heart goes out to the families of all involved.  the co pilot may have had some sympathy for the radicals of the world but, trust me, the trigger was self hate of his sexuality.  It is, as I always say, at the heart of who we are and how we live.

My wife took her first airplane flight ever from Kiev to Warsaw with me.  I told her that they would not issue her a parchute unless she explicitly asked for one.  At the time, her subsequent request was good fun and a laugh for the boarding agent and ourselves.  Now, I'm starting to think that the feasability of parachute evacuation of a commercial aircraft needs to be seriously examined.  Sure, many casualties on landing, especially in the Alps, but at least everyone gets a fighting chance to live.

i dont believe its feasible to exit a commerical jetliner with a parachute unless you have some sort of ejection seat mechanism. (although db cooper did it, there is no way to say for certain he survived) the airspeed is too great, and by that time the plane in is no longer under control and is pitching and turning. they could of course create large breakaway containers that would have parachutes attached, but it would be very expensive, and corporate america usually finds it much cheaper to simply pay off the surviving family members, now that most of us have no jobs, or not good jobs anyway, our lifetime earnings potential is much smaller than it used to be, the economics of transportation safety tend to favor settling with the lawyers after the accident.

anything is possible: Federal Express Flight 705

On April 7, 1994, Federal Express Flight 705, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 cargo jet carrying electronics across the United States from Memphis, Tennessee to San Jose, California, experienced an attempted hijacking for the purpose of a suicide attack.

Auburn Calloway, a Federal Express employee facing possible dismissal for lying about his reported flight hours, boarded the scheduled flight as a deadheading passenger with a guitar case carrying several hammers and a speargun. He intended to disable the aircraft's cockpit voice recorder before take-off and, once airborne, kill the crew with hammers so their injuries would appear consistent with an accident rather than a hijacking. The speargun would be a last resort. He would then crash the aircraft while just appearing to be an employee killed in an accident. This would make his family eligible for a $2.5 million life insurance policy paid by Federal Express.[1]

Calloway's plan was unsuccessful. Despite severe injuries, the crew was able to fight back, subdue Calloway and land the aircraft safely. An attempt at a mental health defense was unsuccessful and Calloway was subsequently convicted of multiple charges including attempted murder, attempted air piracy and interference with flight crew operations. He received two consecutive life sentences. Calloway's appeal was successful in having his conviction for interference ruled as a lesser included offense of attempted air piracy.[2] To date, Calloway has not received any possibility of parole....

Come on! There are many more possible explanations why the co-pilot was incapable of flying the plane and could not open the cockpit door such as acute cardiac arrest and poisoning exhaust fumes in the cabin air. As long as no further evidence is available the conclusion that the co-pilot deliberately destroyed the plane is quite silly.

The A320 has a remote hijack recovery which means it can be flown by remote control. Why did the first report (from the daily mail)of this include eyewitness accounts of a huge long explosion and then two fighter jets were seen passing by? The very next reports scrubbed the eyewitness accounts of fighter jets. I believe we will find the truth once (if ever) we get the passenger list.

When cruising altitude of 38000 feet was established the Captain went to the toilet to have a piss.

Now there was nothing to do until the Alps had been crossed and they would initiate and dial in the 1500 fpm descent into Germany.

However the copilot had different Ideas. As soon as the captain had left the cockpit, the copilot locked the door and dialed in a 4000 feet per minute descent into the fly by wire A320 flight-computer,innitiating immediate descent. The captain returns and tries to enter the cockpit, but access is denied, even after several calls and punching in the special code to access. The copilot pushed the lock button from inside, which locked the door for 5 minutes longer denying access to everyone else including the captain.

this was a controlled flight into terrain, innitiated by the pilot in the cockpit who had to dial the numbers into the flightcomputer to innitiate a radical 4000fpm early descent

and crash the A320 into the Alps at 6000ft, for the sole reason of killing himself and everyone else on board.

The Passengers must have been aware of all the drama for the last few minutes, as the captain tried desperately to enter the cockpit door and tried to break it down and bang and scream for the copilot to open. All this can be heard on the CVR.

The A320 is fly by wire, which means that unusual commands had to be punched into the computer, or else the A320 would have continued to cruise at 38000ft at the assigned altitude that was programmed into the flight-computer at the time the Captain went to the Toilet.

The copilot had to physically change the flightpath in order to innitiate the 8 minute 4000fpm descent into the side of the mountain.

this guy had 630 flying hours, 28 years old a brilliant future, but some major problems...i.e. wife, Girlfriend, money, stockmarket losses, pressure, trauma, depression for any kind of reason, some kind of PTSD maybe a loss of some kind...pilots are only people after all and some can crack under pressure like all of us.

I blame that Idiotic door safety mechanism.....after 9/11 its a kneejerk reaction death trap!

but I bet you anything, that pilot was mentally unstable and he must have planned this ....

or else he could not sit there for 8 minutes, watching his intented flightpath unfold to the very end...

without a word, just the sound of his breathing to the very end, listening to their screams...killing everyone.

Andreas Lübitz was an ice-cold killer, and he planned to kill himself and all 150 people.

This is not suicide, this is mass murder...even terrorism.

I will call this guy a terrorist.

there is no excuse for all that happened!

WR;)
