It's The End Of March And 99.85% Of California Is Abnormally Dry Already

Tyler Durden's picture

With NASA scientists warning about California only having one year of water left, it appears The Kardashians and March Madness continue to distract Americans from the ugly looming reality of water shortages. With summer around the corner, the US Drought Minitoring service reports today that a stunning 99.85% of California is "abnormally dry," and 98.11% of the state is in drought conditions leaving over 37 million people in harm's way.

As we concluded previously,

Right now the state has only about one year of water supply left in its reservoirs, and our strategic backup supply, groundwater, is rapidly disappearing. California has no contingency plan for a persistent drought like this one (let alone a 20-plus-year mega-drought), except, apparently, staying in emergency mode and praying for rain.

In short, we have no paddle to navigate this crisis.

Several steps need be taken right now.

First, immediate mandatory water rationing should be authorized across all of the state's water sectors, from domestic and municipal through agricultural and industrial. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is already considering water rationing by the summer unless conditions improve. There is no need for the rest of the state to hesitate. The public is ready. A recent Field Poll showed that 94% of Californians surveyed believe that the drought is serious, and that one-third support mandatory rationing.

Second, the implementation of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act of 2014 should be accelerated. The law requires the formation of numerous, regional groundwater sustainability agencies by 2017. Then each agency must adopt a plan by 2022 and “achieve sustainability” 20 years after that. At that pace, it will be nearly 30 years before we even know what is working. By then, there may be no groundwater left to sustain.

Third, the state needs a task force of thought leaders that starts, right now, brainstorming to lay the groundwork for long-term water management strategies. Although several state task forces have been formed in response to the drought, none is focused on solving the long-term needs of a drought-prone, perennially water-stressed California.

Our state's water management is complex, but the technology and expertise exist to handle this harrowing future. It will require major changes in policy and infrastructure that could take decades to identify and act upon. Today, not tomorrow, is the time to begin.

Finally, the public must take ownership of this issue. This crisis belongs to all of us — not just to a handful of decision-makers. Water is our most important, commonly owned resource, but the public remains detached from discussions and decisions.

This process works just fine when water is in abundance. In times of crisis, however, we must demand that planning for California's water security be an honest, transparent and forward-looking process. Most important, we must make sure that there is in fact a plan.

Call me old-fashioned, but I'd like to live in a state that has a paddle so that it might also still have a creek.

Over half of the comments associated with this article are hatred or ridicule of some political ideology.  Seriously? What the hell does a drought in California have to do with politics? I don't understand why some find it necessary to take every opportunity to blame 'the other people' for anything and everything... even the frickin' weather in California.

News Flash for you...the only Americans that can stand California's liberal bullshit is Californians, and not even all or them. I personally wish the state and all it's liberals would leave the union or dry up and blow away. Option two seems to be coming true. Bye bye liberal POS.

Right.  California used to be a wonderful place to live until the nanny state took over and ruined it.  California, along with New York, has the least personal freedom.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  Get ready for a massive water tax for CA residents (after all, somebody has to pay for all those yellow braille pads on all sidewalk corners).  And the tax will NEVER go away, even if CA sees itself enduring the storm of the century in the near future.

Your politics and religion certainly dictate what sort of blessings or cursings you will inherit. In this case California is reaping a whirlwind of Biblical plagues too many to mention. Whatever, Jerry Brown is only concerned about Climate Change when he should be praying for rain.

Are there any of ZH crown actually live in California? or Central Valley? I think not.

I despise what government is doing as much as next guy but the roots of what’s actually going on in California is much deeper than arrogance, ignorance namely it is malfeasance covered up by propaganda of water austerity.

It is true that we have drought in California but overall it is not as bad as it’s being portrayed, if we consider that in California almost half of area's designated as deserts and because of that most advanced water system in the world was developed over century ago.

The true climate accounts only for a third of a problem, two thirds of a problem are feudal-like water rights and abuse of system for water subsidies supposedly helping farmers but actually loading water moguls with cash. Even now, there is enough water available in California for everybody’s need, including small farmers, but there is not enough water for moguls’ greed. That’s the problem.

What if, IF, they are right?

I appreciate your comment. There's a drought alright but it's being created by weather modification. The pictures you cite tell a powerful story. I'm not saying everybody at NASA is lying. Just the top people and they work for the Globalists. That's the way it's always been. The agenda is to reshape California and destroy the economies of selected areas and divi them up.

The three photo progression you link to directly corresponds to the implementation of the heavy chemtrial spraying program along with HAARP. Just go look at Sat photos of the Jet Stream manipulation that has gone on during the same period off the CA coast.

In California, there is no terorist enemy, hence they invented a drought as the enemy.

Somebody is going to earn moeny on this scam.

I was in Ca on a business trip only, I live in EU and do not know much about Ca water system and water legislation.

My instinkt tells me, that the water shortage and the fears in MM are preset to make a big many....and  stray some fear among civil opulation for further restricting citizen's rights.

All they need to do is to do :
1. Use solar electricity to purify sea water
2. Pump the clean water upstream ; use wind turbines
3. Print money at Fed Reserve to finance the ops as usual ; Money For Nothing

with so much solar & wind power available to them, they can easily handle all this with an ocean next to it (and an unlimited ocean of money at Fed. Reserve)

Water desalination is already cheap ($0.43c per cubic metre max - that's 1,000 ltrs - and for perspective, that's cheaper than the water cost from free rainfall here in the UK - what's on the water companies accounts books anyway) and it looks as if Lockheed Martin's massively more efficient Perforene desalination membrane is going to arrive at the right time.

http://www.businessinsider.com/lockheed-martin-desalination-graphene-fil...

So why isn't California putting in the necessary desalination plant ready, use existing desalination membranes in the meantime, and switch to Perforene ones when they are ready?

Too busy pushing agendas rather than paying attention to reality?

To me, there's only going to be a water shortage, because somebody wants one.
