"Serious Depressive Episode" May Have Driven Germanwings Pilot To "Criminal, Mad, Suicidal" Action, Prosecutors Allege
Andreas Lubitz, the 28-year-old co-pilot who murder-suicided a plane full of 150 people into the Alps, had been judged to have suffered a "serious depressive episode" around the time he suspended his training in 2009, according to internal documents cited by Germany's Bild. As Reuters reports, Lubitz had broken off his training in 2009 and reportedly spent a year in psychiatric treatment but as the Lufthansa CEO noted, "After he was cleared again, he resumed training. He passed all the subsequent tests and checks with flying colors. His flying abilities were flawless." French Prime Minister Manuel Valls urged patience during the investigation but stated, "everything points to a criminal, mad, suicidal action that we cannot comprehend."
As The Wall Street Journal reports, the Germanwings co-pilot who appeared to intentionally crash an airliner into a French mountainside this week, killing himself and 149 passengers and crew, received a note from a doctor excusing him from work but apparently tore it up, a German prosecutor said Friday.
The prosecutor said evidence collected in a search of Andreas Lubitz’ Düsseldorf apartment on Thursday afternoon did not include a suicide note and gave no indication of a political or religious motive for his apparent decision to crash the plane.
“However documents were confiscated that contained medical information indicating an existing medical treatment,” the Düsseldorf prosecutor said in a statement.

“Doctor’s notes that were found that were current and for the day of the incident support the assumption, based on a preliminary evaluation, that the deceased concealed his illness from his employer and work environment,” the prosecutor said in the statement.
Earlier, Germany’s Federal Aviation Office said that Mr. Lubitz had a medical condition noted in his pilot’s medical certificate, but the spokesman couldn’t say whether the record was related to his mental or physical health because the information was confidential.
And as Reuters adds, Lubitz broke off his training six years ago due to depression and spent over a year in psychiatric treatment, a German newspaper reported on Friday.
Lufthansa Chief Executive Carsten Spohr acknowledged at a news conference on Thursday that Lubitz had broken off his training in 2009 but did not explain why. He said there was nothing in the pilot's background to suggest he was a risk.
"After he was cleared again, he resumed training. He passed all the subsequent tests and checks with flying colors. His flying abilities were flawless," Spohr said.
But Bild, citing internal documents forwarded by Lufthansa's Aeromedical Center to German authorities, reported that Lubitz had suffered from depression and anxiety, and had been judged to have suffered a "serious depressive episode" around the time he suspended his training.
Lufthansa and German prosecutors declined to comment on the report, which is likely to raise questions about the airline's screening procedures for its pilots and, if confirmed, could expose it to substantial liabilities in the crash.

Jörg Kämpflein—a flight club board member who has been with the club since 1993—said he was “surprised, astonished” by the allegations surrounding Mr. Lubitz. These, he said, “in no way” fitted his personality. Klaus Radke, president of the club, said Mr. Lubitz had renewed his pilot’s license to fly alone when he last visited.

A government investigator got the release of his complete medical history in a day, and it was never avaiable to the Airlines. Many prescriptions would have shown up under random drug screen tests. Depends on the testing agency. This is all to quick and clean.

Part of his flight training was in AZ. Was he approached by CIA and programmed (Mind Kontrol)? Would like to see an interview with his doctor who wrote the notes stating he should call in sick.
Flight path was headed straight for Monaco before going down in the Alps. Monaco would have been a supreme target for a false flag. French fighter jets were scrambled to avoid that is my guess. Plane was remote controlled into clear terrain.
Cockpit audio was likely manipulated imo. Doctors notes at his appartment may have been planted before French authorities "broke" the story and local German police started looking at his place.
Too many variables here to really get a clear picture. Depression is a serious problem but it doesn't drive a man to ram a plane "calm cool and collected" (according to audio) into a mountain.

All of this information is from the airline and what they found in his home. An employee's records with a company are pretty easy to get, especially when said company is trying to avoid paying a huge lawsuit to >100 different famlies.

In Germany, both his Employment Record AND his monthly Paystub show his Religious Affiliation. The "Church Tax" shows up as a line item Deduction on the Paystub.
If you want to have it removed, you have to leave the Church (local Catholic or Protestant church will send you letters, urging you to reconsider, before kicking you out). If he were an Atheist, Agnostic or Muslim, it would show.
The fact that they won't talk about it (play dumb, deflect), is VERY telling: If he converted to radical/Jihadi Islam and decided to do a "9/11" on some other target, they'd want to avoid the public backlash against Muslims in Europe. It's that simple.

Um, there are plenty of nutjobs with security clearances. The CIA has different sets of questions for different categories of nutjobs during the recruiting process. They don't care if you are a nutjob as long as you are open about it to them.

It might be time to look at who was on board and what was in the cargo. It really doesn't make sense that a "depressed" guy would take 150 people he didn't know with him. There's a difference between suicidal thoughts and homocidal thoughts - although SSRI's can induce both of those symptoms. Kind of makes you wonder if he was on SSRI's to cope with his "depressive event" ....

He only racked up 660 hours of flight time in 1.5 years. He was grounded for *EXTENDED* periods of time, or flew on average -- less than an hour a day as a full time job.
This doesn't pass the smell test. Lufthansa knew way more about this guy than they are letting onto. I bet Lufthansa (or their insurers) pay through the nose for this one.
What are the averages? Guy was still young. Come to think of it, I have never seen a pilot that young. Probably because the guys with higher seniority get more hours. Full time pilot at Germanwings is ok but it's not as sexy as full time Captain with a 380 under your ass.
For some reason, the brain programming from the Denzel Washington movie "The Manchurian Candidate" comes to mind. He spent enough time in a Psych Ward for this to have happened.
No matter how "depressed" he may have been, you don't just kill a plane full of kids as part of your "Exit". It's not credible at all.

Another item people are not aware of, when you screw up in the training cycle (I have), they (the trainers) find something to blame it on versus the training. I screwed up more than once in training and you are always training. Severally depressed sounds like over worked in flying terms.

In a small number of cases, people have bad reactions to anti-depressants, and those who love them should be alert to any signs of trouble. These people slipped through the cracks.

Depends what the mother's maiden name is. Father's name is Lubitz which may or may not be Jewish heritage. Not many Jews left in Germany after the war. Some came back and rightfully reclaimed their possessions but that's another story for another day.

The puzzle to me is if the voice recorder was hearing Lubitz breathing, why wasn't the GPWS (Ground Proximity Warning System) heard loudly saying "PULL UP! PULL UP!" ?
Every modern jet has a GPWS and it should've been issuing a warning when it detected imminent contact with terrain under the conditions that existed just prior to the crash.

If you have control of a plane, careening toward a hill at 400mph, would you not expect breathing to be a tad faster than normal as the impact looms?

That news came out just on March 20th, a couple days before U4 9525 crashed. They say that the Germanwings plane had the latest computer and the issue that nearly crashed the LH jet in November was fixed.

The French were able to find the VCR (voice cockpit recorder) and retrieve enough audio to declare it was the co-pilot (lone gunman scenario?) who was in control of the plane and deliberately crashed it because he was insane. How could the prosecutor make such a definitive statement so quick without knowing at the time the complete medical history of the co-pilot or if someone else had rushed into the cockpit when the captain left to use the restroom?
The Dutch have yet to release their final report for what caused the crash of flight MH-17. Compared to the French investigation it appears the Dutch are purposefully delaying the report. Why?
