"Serious Depressive Episode" May Have Driven Germanwings Pilot To "Criminal, Mad, Suicidal" Action, Prosecutors Allege

Tyler Durden's picture

Andreas Lubitz, the 28-year-old co-pilot who murder-suicided a plane full of 150 people into the Alps, had been judged to have suffered a "serious depressive episode" around the time he suspended his training in 2009, according to internal documents cited by Germany's Bild. As Reuters reports, Lubitz had broken off his training in 2009 and reportedly spent a year in psychiatric treatment but as the Lufthansa CEO noted, "After he was cleared again, he resumed training. He passed all the subsequent tests and checks with flying colors. His flying abilities were flawless." French Prime Minister Manuel Valls urged patience during the investigation but stated, "everything points to a criminal, mad, suicidal action that we cannot comprehend."

As The Wall Street Journal reports, the Germanwings co-pilot who appeared to intentionally crash an airliner into a French mountainside this week, killing himself and 149 passengers and crew, received a note from a doctor excusing him from work but apparently tore it up, a German prosecutor said Friday.

The prosecutor said evidence collected in a search of Andreas Lubitz’ Düsseldorf apartment on Thursday afternoon did not include a suicide note and gave no indication of a political or religious motive for his apparent decision to crash the plane.

“However documents were confiscated that contained medical information indicating an existing medical treatment,” the Düsseldorf prosecutor said in a statement.

...

“Doctor’s notes that were found that were current and for the day of the incident support the assumption, based on a preliminary evaluation, that the deceased concealed his illness from his employer and work environment,” the prosecutor said in the statement.

Earlier, Germany’s Federal Aviation Office said that Mr. Lubitz had a medical condition noted in his pilot’s medical certificate, but the spokesman couldn’t say whether the record was related to his mental or physical health because the information was confidential.

And as Reuters adds, Lubitz broke off his training six years ago due to depression and spent over a year in psychiatric treatment, a German newspaper reported on Friday.

Lufthansa Chief Executive Carsten Spohr acknowledged at a news conference on Thursday that Lubitz had broken off his training in 2009 but did not explain why. He said there was nothing in the pilot's background to suggest he was a risk.

"After he was cleared again, he resumed training. He passed all the subsequent tests and checks with flying colors. His flying abilities were flawless," Spohr said.

But Bild, citing internal documents forwarded by Lufthansa's Aeromedical Center to German authorities, reported that Lubitz had suffered from depression and anxiety, and had been judged to have suffered a "serious depressive episode" around the time he suspended his training.

Lufthansa and German prosecutors declined to comment on the report, which is likely to raise questions about the airline's screening procedures for its pilots and, if confirmed, could expose it to substantial liabilities in the crash.

Friends are stunned....

“He was a quiet person…not someone who tried to be the center of attention,” the club’s Mr. Rücker said.

Jörg Kämpflein—a flight club board member who has been with the club since 1993—said he was “surprised, astonished” by the allegations surrounding Mr. Lubitz. These, he said, “in no way” fitted his personality. Klaus Radke, president of the club, said Mr. Lubitz had renewed his pilot’s license to fly alone when he last visited.

*  *  *

Because nothing fixes despression and anxiety like smashing a plane into a mountain at 500mph.

BS I joke about faggotry often, but I worked around them for years in the TV biz. My tailor is a gay guy. They are not insane. Warped maybe, but that leaves more cooter for me.

What is warped is all the faggotry promotion going on in society.

I completely agree on the homosexual promotion angle, way over done and warped.  That's the way the State takes power away from the family to centralise control;  it doesn't mean that the homosexuals themselves are warped.

I heard on the news this morning that anti-depressants can have the side-effect of reducing impulse control.  It suddenly clicked why kids who take them actually have increased rates of suicide.  I suspect the same effect here.

Seems like we need to re-evaluate the drugs you can take that make you unfit for duty here.

I have a personal horror story involving Prozac. I confirm that it does indeed reduce impulse control AND it altered my thinking in a way that was unsustainable within a DAY of taking the stuff.

I was TOLD it would take two weeks to take effect and that was clearly bullpuckey. Since I rapidly became a (consciousless) danger to others, I chose to discontinue the treatment and take responsibilty for my own mind.

We are taught that other (more "qualified" people) have all the answers, I actually found that the best treatment for depression was to fix the bloody problems that were depressing me, and ignore the ones that are out of my power to fix.

My personal experience and observations suggest that an illegal drug dealer is far more likely to understand the full range of effetc s of his product and provide useful consumer safety information than any doctor or pharmacist.

Sometimes depression is related to some chemical defficiency so there's no un derlying "problem". Sort of like people who have low vitamin D may have seasonal disorder or lack of iron in the blood can cause schizoid thinking.

Last few times I've flown the pilots look younger than I am...they look like they are dressed up for halloween.  You can tell when someone doesn't belong in a uniform, like a fat Marine.  When I see a pilot who is middle aged and up they look seasoned, confident, I feel I can put trust in them.  These kids shouldn't be allowed to fly, the screening process should be age.

It is common in Germany to get a Doctor to sign a statement that you are sick. It's also necessary for most jobs when you're out due to sickness. It's like an absence note for schoolkids in the US, only it's written by a doctor. Much like the US rule if you're out sick for more than 3 days the school needs a doctor's note.

'Krankengeschrieben' (written off as ill) can be for the period of time the doctor thinks you need to stay out of work. If this guy went to the doctor the day before and was written off as ill for a week then the statement that he tore up a note for being ill on that day would be correct.

Doctors' offices open early as well, say around 8:00. He could possibly have gotten a note that day, but it's more likely he was written off in the days before.

You can get written off for depression, it's not unusual. Actually, nothing about this guy seems to be so unusual that it starts throwing off red flags.

The Nobel Prize Winner kills a lot more and no one complains - in fact, he is most admired man in this world in 2014 Gallup poll:

Today, the world’s greatest single campaign of terror entails the execution of entire families, guests at weddings, mourners at funerals. These are Obama’s victims. According to the New York Times, Obama makes his selection from a CIA “kill list” presented to him every Tuesday in the White House Situation Room. He then decides, without a shred of legal justification, who will live and who will die. His execution weapon is the Hellfire missile carried by a pilotless aircraft known as a drone; these roast their victims and festoon the area with their remains. Each “hit” is registered on a faraway console screen as a “bugsplat”.

“For goose-steppers,” wrote the historian Norman Pollock, “substitute the seemingly more innocuous militarisation of the total culture. And for the bombastic leader, we have the reformer manque, blithely at work, planning and executing assassination, smiling all the while.”

Uniting fascism old and new is the cult of superiority. “I believe in American exceptionalism with every fibre of my being,” said Obama, evoking declarations of national fetishism from the 1930s.

This statement puzzles me: "Mr. Robin said the plane’s voice recorder showed that Mr. Lubitz was breathing normally in the moments leading up to the crash, indicating that he had deliberately crashed the plane."

The puzzle to me is if the voice recorder was hearing Lubitz breathing, why wasn't the GPWS (Ground Proximity Warning System) heard loudly saying "PULL UP! PULL UP!" ?

Every modern jet has a GPWS and it should've been issuing a warning when it detected imminent contact with terrain under the conditions that existed just prior to the crash.

Fri, 03/27/2015 - 09:49 | 5933420 Blano

Is there some indication that it wasn't doing that?  I've read that all relevant warnings were going off in the cabin.

Also, just because the warning system says pull up doesn't mean he's going to if he's hell bent on dying.

No need for a passenger manifest - it's pretty obvious what the objective here was.

A certain country stepped out of line recently and sought to pursue a path not approved by their masters. Said country has just been informed via sledge hammer-to-forehead that any more independent thought will result in serious hardship for said country's industries and economy.

I think it is safe to assume the message has been received and will be taken into consideration before any further adventurism is contemplated.

And speaking of security doors -- we now have a policy in the US that let's flight crews bypass TSA security screenings. They just walk past carrying their overnight bag. How easy it would be for the co-pilot to bring a gun aboard, shoot the pilot, lock the security door, and repeat this same thing.

This was a mass homicide. I didn't know that depressed people became maniacal killers. This story is too pat, too soon. The responsible governments (Germany, France, Spain - Airbus principals) are running away from terrorism/pilot quals/aircraft maintenance/autopilot failure/control systems malfunction as root causes. GERMAN prosecutors revealed the “significant discovery” made at Germanwing co-pilot Andreas Lubitz’s home was a sick note covering the day of the crash.

Prosecutors found torn-up and current sick leave notices suggesting he was ill and receiving medical treatment, backing up suspicions he hid his illness from his employer and colleagues. While investigators did not specify what illness Lubitz had, German media reports he needed ongoing assessments for severe depression, BBC reports.

The news comes following revelations the captain used an axe to try and get back into the cockpit. German daily Bild cited security sources saying the captain,

Patrick Sonderheimer, tried using an axe to break down the cockpit’s armoured door.

This could not be immediately confirmed, but a spokesman for Germanwings confirmed to AFP that an axe was on board the aircraft.

Such a tool is “part of the safety equipment of an A320,” the spokesman told Bild.

Lubitz reportedly suffered a major breakdown following a recent relationship breakdown.

According to The Telegraph in the UK,

Lubitz was engaged to be married next year, but had recently broken up with his fiancee.

It is understood that the 28-year-old was struggling to cope after the relationship failed.

The theory emerged hours after The Guardian reported Lubitz stopped his training to be a pilot six years ago because he was suffering from “psychological problems”.

The report, quoted from German daily Bild, said the Lufthansa flight school in Phoenix designated Lubitz at the time as “not suitable for flying”.

Yesterday, police announced they had made a “significant discovery” at Lubitz’s home in Dusseldorf.

German media also reported that police were investigating one particular piece of paper which they believe held clues to Lubitz’s horrific actions.

Markus Niesczery of Dusseldorf Police told the Daily Mail: “We wanted to search to see if we could find something that would explain what happened.”

“We have found something which will now be taken for tests. We cannot say what it is at the moment but it may be a very significant clue to what has happened,” Mr Niesczery said.

We always hear in these situations that it will be at least 6 months to determine the cause of the crash.  This time we have the guy who did it, the motive, what he ate for breakfast, facebook photos, and every last bit of detail that normally wouldn't be reported for at least 6 months - if ever.  This is all too conveeeeeeeenient for my liking.

when you shoot a bullet through a paper target it makes a semi clean hole.  It does not approach the target and fragment into a thousand pieces and then pepper the target.  If that jet flew into that mountain on any kind of angle that debris field should be very limited in area covered.  All views of that crash site from the air show debris scattered as far as you can see.  It stinks.  I am not a physicist or engineer or air crash specialist.  It is all fishy.   That debris field appears to go on forever.  Just saying,,,, good weekend to all.

Anytime a plane goes down one has to ask was anyone on that flight that would be wanted dead by any of the worlds intelligence agencies. Plane crashs are the perfect cover for murder. In this case why would a co-pilot plan a sucide based on the pilot going out of the cabin to go to the bathroom. What if the pilot did not have to go.....was he going to wait for another flight to kill himself on. Seems unlikely.....what is more likely is that this plane was targeted to go down based on who was on it. Passenger manefests only tell a partial story as people travel under cover. On the flight we had an American with ties to the Geospacial agency, an Israeli, a few Iranians and who knows who else who may have been using the low cost air flight as cover. The cockpit door could be over ridden based on this training video from Airbus.
http://www.lemonde.fr/europe/video/2015/03/26/une-video-d-airbus-expliqu...
Even with both pilots out cold there was an override it get in. So why was it not functional. Because it was deactivated not by the copilot but remotely as these planes are all capable to be flown by wire remotely. The copilot was out cold from either a drink he did not know he was given or gas in the cabin....the flight them remotely piloted into the mountain side. No evedence....no bodies to autopsy. It's also interesting that the cockpit voice revorders were found and could be read but the flight data recorder, the black boxes, were found with the memory card missing.....feels, looks and smell of a black ops hit.....

All accidents in a range of 0,0000001, means once in million years.
Thosse accidents all happen, when it is convenient to somebody.
Hence those are no accidents anymore, but conspiracies. there might be conspiracy theorists, but the main stream media employs coincidence theorists, where the coincidences can happen once in a million years. A reminder: the planes are barely more, than 100 years old, we have a way to go until 1 million years of airplanes flying.

All we will ever know is what they decide to tell us.  I didn't see any landing gear or large engine parts.

The landing gear are not made of space age composites, and usually they are lying out in the debris field.

Not to be too cold, but I didn't see any bodies, either. In the 1960's an airliner went down somewhere, there were bodies everywhere, even up in trees. Luggage, clothing, seats all these are usually seen in the crash photos. This crash looks like they dumped litter down the mountainside.

Depends on the velocity on impact. Controlled flight into terrain at top speed would basically flatten the plane and everything on it like a bug against a windshield. The luckier families will be able to bury a foot left in their loved one's shoe.

http://speisa.com/modules/articles/index.php/item.1086/the-co-pilot-of-t...

The co-pilot of the Germanwings Airbus was a convert to Islam

According to Michael Mannheimer, a writer for German PI-News, Germany now has its own 9/11, thanks to the convert to Islam, Andreas Lubitz.

Translation from German:

All evidence indicates that the copilot of Airbus machine in his six-months break during his training as a pilot in Germanwings, converted to Islam and subsequently either by the order of "radical", ie. devout Muslims , or received the order from the book of terror, the Quran, on his own accord decided to carry out this mass murder. As a radical mosque in Bremen is in the center of the investigation, in which the convert was staying often, it can be assumed that he - as Mohammed Atta, in the attack against New York - received his instructions directly from the immediate vicinity of the mosque.

Converts are the most important weapon of Islam. Because their resume do not suggests that they often are particularly violent Muslims. Thus Germany now has its own 9/11, but in a reduced form. And so it is clear that Islam is a terrorist organization that are in accordance with §129a of the Criminal Code to prohibit it and to investigate its followers. But nothing will happen. One can bet that the apologists (media, politics, "Islamic Scholars") will agree to assign this an act of a "mentally unstable" man, and you can bet that now, once again the mantra of how supposedly peaceful Islam is will continue. And worse still, the attacks by the left against those who have always warned against Islam, will be angrier and merciless.

For now the German Islam supporters like never before have their backs against the wall.

A forward-opening hinge door separates the cockpit from the passenger compartment. It has three electric locking strikes, controlled by the flight crew. In normal conditions, when the door is closed, they remain locked. When there is a request to enter the cockpit, the flight crew can authorize entry by unlocking the door, that remains closed until it is pushed open.
When the flight crew does not respond to requests for entry, the door can also be unlocked by the cabin crew, by entering a two to seven-digit code (programmed by the airline) on the keypad, installed on the lateral side of the Forward Attendant Panel (FAP).

good info on the door....

....so the if the cabin crew had the 'wrong' codes ?... that could explain it, but still leaves the posibility of airline involvement as only they would issue these codes.

If the airline is involved, it isn't a simple pilot suicide......

Yes, this stinks of cover-up. None here know what happened to the Germanwings flight. Lufthansa will see to it we never do. (Damaged CVR? Do you know how much of a licking those can take?)

This we do know. The airline are not just trying to minimize their liability and make Lubitz and not themselves look like the bad guy. They also see an opportunity to fiddle Lubitz's family out of his pension and any extra money for wrongful death claims---which, if they can convince a jury that Lubitz flew an otherwise serviceable plane into a mountain, they have every right to do.

Airlines play this card all the time. They tried this stunt with Air New Zealand flight 901, for example.

All those rumours about Lubitz being a sekrit Muslin are just that, as far as anyone knows. I wouldn't be surprised if Lufthansa's PR department started them.
