Syria "Welcomes" Larger Russia Presence

Tyler Durden's picture

Following Vladimir Putin's demands for an "immediate cessation of military activities" in Yemen, AFP reports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's comment during a recent interview that "with complete confidence that we welcome any widening of the Russian presence in the eastern Mediterranean and on Syrian coasts and ports," including the port of Tartus. Amid the Western-backed opposition National Coalition's planned boycott of talks, Assad pointedly remarked, "the negotiating parties must be independent and must reflect what the Syrian people want... people would not accept that their future, their fate, or their rules are decided from outside."

Syria would welcome an increased Russian military presence at its sea ports, President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with Russian news channels published Friday. As AFP reports,

"I can say with complete confidence that we welcome any widening of the Russian presence in the eastern Mediterranean and on Syrian coasts and ports," including the port of Tartus, Assad said.

"For us, the larger this presence in our neighbourhood, the better it is for stability in this region," he told journalists.

Russia operates a naval base in Tartus along Syria's western shores that includes warships, barracks and warehouses.

Set up under a 1971 security agreement, Moscow has called its Tartus presence "a supply and technical point for the Russian navy".

Assad told the reporters of eight news channels that Russian military support to Syria "has continued" throughout the past four years of war in his country.

He also welcomed Russia's role in hosting a second round of peace talks but said the negotiating parties must not be influenced by external players.

The Western-backed opposition National Coalition which insists on Assad's ouster has announced it will boycott the April 6-9 talks.

"For the success of these talks, the negotiating parties must be independent and must reflect what the Syrian people, with all of their different political views, want," Assad said.

"Today, people would not accept that their future, their fate, or their rules are decided from outside," he said.

"A solution to the Syrian crisis is not impossible -- if the Syrian people sit with each other and discuss, then we'll get results," he said.

Assad said Western countries, including the US, France, and Britain, "don't want a political solution" in Syria and were being "hypocritical".

"To them, a political solution means changing the state, the fall of the state and replacing it with a state that works for them," he said.

More than 215,000 people have been killed since Syria's conflict began, nearly a third of them civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group. In his extensive interview, Assad also said he hoped for a closer relationship with Egypt.

"We hope we will soon see a Syrian-Egyptian rapprochement," he said, although there was as yet no "real relationship" between the two Arab states.

What if all the huffing and puffing was phony?  What if the US recent sanctions stupidity was designed to give a leg up to the creation of the alternate to the SWIFT settlement system that will ultimately usher in the SDR?  I know, "What difference does it make!?!"  I think the Soros led shysters are performing their parts admirably well.  It all seems everyone is acting in their interest but the end destination still remains the same.  One bank uber allis.

So.  It is regime change or our kids? Servitude or nuclear fire?

Might want to have a care what replaces the clown regime.

The anti-clowns will know two things:

1) The ultimatum is for control, not extermination.  Extermination requries no ultimatum.

2) If clown's replacements believe you'd really do it, they should launch without warning, without limit, with only one object - complete depopulation.  With near total disregard for their own losses...because only a few need survive.

It is an awfully strange thing you prefer to clowns.

Complete extermination is a stupid goal. The goal is to reduce the population under 500 millions, not to kill everyone. Its difficult to do if you desire to control who gets included in the 500 millions. Its difficult to pull when you dont know who may betray or disobey your orders.

In the long term the dissemination of nuclear technologies will make large scale controls impossible and genocide affordable.

Big time pols are cowards. What we need are creative, curious and brave local commanders with access to tactical nukes and a willingness to roll the dice.

The Nobel Prize Winner will tell any lie needed to start a war.  Apparently, the depraved "mass-murderer" Putin has been known to stop wars:

Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has published an article demonstrating that the US government and President Barack Obama knowingly lied when they claimed that the Syrian government had carried out a sarin gas attack on insurgent-held areas last August.

http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2013/12/10/pers-d10.html

Since the beginning of the week, the three most influential mass circulation newsmagazines of the United States, Britain, and Germany—Time, The Economist, and Der Spiegel—have published cover stories that combine wild accusations against Vladimir Putin with demands for a showdown with Russia.

The most striking and obvious characteristic of these cover stories is that they are virtually identical. The CIA has scripted them all. The stories employ the same insults and the same fabrications. They denounce Putin’s “web of lies.” The Russian president is portrayed as a “depraved” mass murderer.

So Syria is getting closer with Russia, and wants to be closer to Egypt, who is bombing Yemen, whose rebels are close with Iran, who are helping out against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, which is good for Syria but bad for Saudi Arabia and the US, but Saudi Arabia is bombing Yemen along with Egypt which is bad for the rebels backed by Iran, who is supported by Russia and is helping the US.

Sheesh, sounds like a Gordian knot, which is bad for most involved in close poximity, but which is good for the US.

Being closer to Russia has not benefitted other past countries in the ME.  Russia seemed to set them up.  Russia has had ships along Syria and in Syrian ports and it has not changed anything.  It has not stopped the planes flying into Syria or the bombs.  Russia has not fired a single shot to support Syria, nor did they for Iraq, Libya, Serbia.  Putin cancelled a signed contract to sell Syria and Iran anti air missiles years ago and was key in getting Syria to surrender it's chemical weapons (thus making Syria an easier eventual target).  Perhaps Putin just wants to be close enough to scoop up some of the loot this time.

When is the Putin man of action going to do more than strut, have photo's taken and talk?

The cycle of violence in Palestine started in the 1920s due to local overpopulation and inflation brought in by foreign investors. Land "suddenly" became scarce once enough of it was sold to jews. Riots ensued among the poorer arabs (not among the wealthier landowning arabs) and premeditated or not thats how it started.

Turns out you can fuck a population by buying their land just as good as you could by stealing.

Ukraine's economy continues implosion, though the western media will not cover it.

" The Pension fund of Ukraine is bankrupt and exists only through subsidies from the state budget. This was declared by the Minister of Labor and Social Policy of Ukraine, Pavel Rozenko on "First National" channel.

According to him, the situation with the fund is catastrophic.

"80 billion UAH is a subsidy to the Pension fund of Ukraine, which will not even suffice for the payment of all pensions. I want to say that this is a catastrophic situation for any country, when the Pension fund does not have enough money not even to raise pensions, but in order to timely and fully pay the minimum, which we have today in our country. The Pension fund today is bankrupt and without the help of the state, it would cease to exist," -  said Rozenko."

With no trust fund, only direct payments from Kiev's budget can allow for even the smallest pension payments. Meanwhile, in Crimea, living under a reign of terror, pensions have dubled and are payed on time every month. Though food prices have also doubled, the pensioner still is better off as only a % of pension goes for food.

"The Pension fund today is bankrupt and without the help of the state, it would cease to exist "

It is a State managed pension fund.

1. The State expropriated the money into the general budget instead of forming a legitimate sovereign/trust fund, or spent the money and put fist fulls of .GOV IOUs in a file cabinet and claimed the fund existed although it was merely an accounting fabrication ( aka as the U.S. Social Security 'Trust Fund' model ) .

2. The State made promises to it's bureaucrats and praetorians that the populace cannot support economically.

3. The funds were looted during one or more episodes of unbridled corruption and/or regime change.

My people, the Armenians, and other Christians and also Muslims in Syria are being slaughtered by the jihadi forces that are backed by the US.

The US is backing groups attacking Orthodox Christians everywhere in the region. Is this just a coincidence???

As an Assyrian my people have been obliterated thanks to Obama's tomfoolery trying to use ISIS vs Assad while it boomeranged into Northern Iraq

They Assyrians in the Nineveh Plain and Syrian panhandle have been made extinct in their ancient lands because of the evil actions of Obama and Kerry

Obama is the worst of all worlds. Evil, corrupt and manifestly incompetent

On all fronts, it is Putin who is advocating peace talks, whilst the US knows only one way -War. The US no longer knows how to utilise diplomacy. There is no "intelligence" in the Whitehouse, or anywhere else in the current administration.

Obama could always do another beer summit. Assad, ISIS, Iran, Saudi haveing a beer keg summit party.  I like the image, but less likely then an honest speech from Obama.
