Does America really need the absolute army of economists that fit into every nook and cranny of the public and private social and economic system we live in? It seems that more people teach economics to more students than could possibly ever find anything usefull to do with their economics credits.
And what do they actually add to their employers. Somebody pays all these economists to spout off, on TV on radio and on blogs. Corporations have them, think tanks have them, government agencies have them, colleges have lots of them, private equity and hedge fund employ lots of them, Banks are loaded with economists.
In 2005-8, literally thousands of economists looked at the numbers and predicted further growth. Said that there was no housing bubble, predicted further house price increases. Hundreds of economists said that private debt was not too high, household debt was not maxed out. Many claimed house price rises opened a key new source of consumer spending via increased equity, this was a powerful driver of more consumer spending. Banks were all sound, and well capitalized. Blah! Blah! Blah!
The fucks were ALL wrong, but they all kept their positions, and are still there spouting the same bullshit in the media and teaching the same bullshit in universities. They all predict the Fed has weathered the storm and reset growth. Housing is coming back. The consumer is confident. One economist on NRP two weeks ago Saturday said we had achieved full employment.
We live in an age of denial. In an age of rewarded failure. Of collective stupidity, often called public education. Media lies are never exposed, but simply forgotten and new lies told. Manipulation of economic statistics is rampant. Markets are managed by a Supreme Soviet of Fed Bankers. Money is free to the connected, but comes with a real interest rate to ordinary borrowers. All is well, and on to the next war.
Well said Jack... and it can only happen under enormous budget deficits at Federal, State, and City levels. This time however, NYC for example did not go bankrupt, nor did their borropwing costs go up.
The Federal reserve bank bailed not only the banks out but also the neo Bolsheviks that run all the major cities, Universities, and mostly importantly .. the Media companies (ths includes Facebook and Google). Printed $$ can be had at anytime, production / costs / profits are an after thought.

We know there are various schools of economics, each with smaller sub-divisions.
These schools are based on radically different ideas as to how an economy works.
If one school was even close to being right, it would have quickly supplanted all the other schools.
But Economics is in the dark ages, with no school being able to supplant the others as each is right some of the time; nearly right some of the time and wrong the rest of the time.
In the world of real science, E = mc2.
