The other actual choices are not even that good. That is the real problem.

Even at that America is as good or better than it ever been except the loss of lots of its wild outdoor recreation places.

"Mandatory voting" is a CLASSIC play out of the dictator's handbook.  It instantly give the air of legitimacy to everything the dictator does.  "The people voted for me, so I must be good."  Including, of course, complete control of the process by which votes are counted.

Brought to you by the same guy who gave you the Obamacare penalty (excuse me, tax) that you have to pay if you don't buy the healthcare he mandates.

It's a scam.  No, more than that, it's a RED FLAG of how far down we've already gone that a US President would bring this up in an even semi-serious way.

We have compulsory voting in Australia.  The upside is that voting is not mid week but on a Saturday.  It is actually a misnomer because it is only compulsory attendance at a polling place.  Unlike many dictatorships all of the votes are not in the bag or pre-determined before the election.  You are still free to cast an invalid vote if you don't like any of the candidates.  Of course, we still use paper ballots which cannot be interferred with by hackers or back doors in the software.  Not so in other nations.

+1 from another Australian

Mind you NSW just tried internet voting and, what to do you know, the system was found to be hackable after 66,000 votes were cast.

http://theconversation.com/thousands-of-nsw-election-online-votes-open-to-tampering-39164

I guess election day would have to be a public holiday in the US if attendance were mandatory.

It would force the special interests to explain to everyone why they deserve their boondoggles.

But as long as there is a Federal Reserve politicians don't need to balance the budget, so it would tend to impair the fiscal outlook without other measures.

I'm in my 50's and gave up voting about 5 years ago.  I'm simply tired of broken promises (e.g., hope and change) lies (weapons of mass destruction) manipulation (general propoganda via the corporate owned media) and most of all... I'm tired of voting for predetermined "winners" who are willng figureheads/puppets for the oligarchs who run things in attempted annoynimity from behind the Wizard of Oz curtain.  Participating in the current voting system is participating in fraud and adds legitimacy to a perpetually corrupt system.  I want no part of it.

The following link sums it up nicely:

Giving up voting as a protest is as bad as messing up the ballot paper, or giving a vote to some protest party.

Take your right to withhold your vote more seriously and not because you don't think it makes a difference, broken promises etc etc

Withhold your vote because you no longer recognise the legitimacy of the entire regime. Opt out completely. That way you aren't protesting and are genuinely uninterested in the system.

It is said that Norse Gods disappeared because no one believed in them anymore and not because people protested against their actions.

Care not for anything except what is presently before you, the future will take care of itself.

The big part of this whole Bush / Clinton thing that I hate is the focus on dynasty. Happened in Iowa when Grassley did a PR event promoting his grandson (or some such) getting involved in politics. It was more about the Grassley name than about what the relative had to offer as a candidate.

When the perpetuation of the dynasty becomes more important than the qualifications of the person leading then we're no better off than a dictatorship.

Traditionally, the form of hereditary governance you're describing is generally headed by a king or emperor who was given to a country ostensibly by God himself by right of birth. (That's called divine right of kings.) As far as I know, only the Kims of North Korea have so far been able to pull off a hereditary dictatorship, and my bet is the current occupant won't see old age or die in his bed surrounded by loving family. He won't be followed by a son.

That's not how US tyranny rolls.  They'll give us a choice.  They might even count the votes right.  And we'll have a choice between Turd R and Turd D.  Say it turns into Bush v Clinton again.  I think the question regarding who wins is much more appropriate than when it was infamously asked:  What difference does it make?  They'll both follow a neocon agenda of more war, cronyism and more spending.  The differences between them in terms of policy will be cosmetic.  Jeb might treat his staff better, for instance.

I'll say it again:  There is no need to rig the election when the candidates themselves are rigged.  A choice between a Bush and a Clinton isn't a choice.

Agree voting doesn't make a difference since in the USA we have only one party. I image there is only one party in the UK, Canada & Australia too. EU has been taken over by Technocrats of some kind so same thing.

But we should make a list of things we consider valuable in our government & banking to watch over them. Like small banks.

http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/USNUM (total Banks, steady decline since 1985, Call it a COUP)

1) Small Banks & Number of Businesses
2) Small Businesses and Total Businesses
3) Number of Savers and Amount of Personal Savings
4) Number of Pensions and Amount of Retirement Funds
5) Number of Americans with Equity in Housing, Savings, Retirement, Pensions

6) Number of Former Prisoners, Former Felons, Criminals
7) Number of Private Prisons, Total Contract Value of Private Prisons, Number of Prisoners in Private, State, Federal Prison, Quotas for Private Prisons

8) Americans put in Jail for Debt, Debt to the Court, Debt from Credit Cards

9) Number of Properties Seized under Eminent Domain that were homes, Ranches, Farms, commercial businesses

10) Number of Commercial Businesses that went out of Business due to Civil Court Ruling, Agriculture, Pharmaceutical, Ecological, Property Rights

11) Who is getting the Property Rights, Who is using the courts to enforce property rights, why don't Individuals secure property rights as much these days, which property rights are called public and for public good as technology provides new opportunities

Hillary scares me.  Any person who can say the words "Obliterate Iran" when running for the presidency or "Business does not create jobs" is not for any country.  When someone casually speaks about bombing a country, with innocent men, women and children living there they are not representing what I consider sanity, common sense or compassion.

If she would do that to Iran or any other country she did not like, she would do that to Detroit, New Orleans, St. Louis, Chicago and who knows where else.

You are right, Kardashian has the necessary qualifications and can't be worse than the GOTUS, golfer in charge or teleprompter in chief.  Another Bush?  no thank you.

Well, it is possible but the method is messier and it seems to be applied when all is for lost. Scraping soap scum certainly seems preferable to me.

I guess we humans need to grasp to the end our dwindling comforts hoping the vision of the future just can't be true. Then, when learned differently, and right the wrongs of past, we die and our progeny are doomed to the same path, not believing our tales and lacking the experience. The cycle repeats when the parasitic roaches see their opportunity once again and nibble slowly at the the producers once again. So pointless and such a waste of time and resources.

If there is a Devine Presence, I don't understand how he can keep from flushing the whole thing down the crapper in disgust. But I tend to lack patience.

I am for mandatory voting, if every president is limited to one term.

Still dont think it would change much if anything . . . banks will still run the show and pimp the country out.

Mandatory voting would simply ensure that everyone cast a vote for one of their pre-approved, pre-purchased candidates. As the chosen "leaders" are always nothing more than two sides of the same coin, it hardly matters whether 100% of the population votes or not. The only difference it ultimately makes is whose name the corporate overlords write on the check they give as a "campaign contribution." It would, however, make it all the more embarrasing if voting was made mandatory and the voter participation rate still continued to fall. Getting people worked up about the idea of every knuckle-dragging mouth breather out there voting is nothing more than a distraction from the real problem of how pitiful our options are and how little those precious votes actually matter. The same is true of the hysterics over "voter fraud." To hear some politicians talk about it, you would think the problem was both rampant and actually of any real consequence.

Boss Tweed once said, "I don't care who does the voting as long as I get to do the nominating!"

You don't have to control the answers if you control the questions. For example one northern European country had a referendum: Do you want to start phasing out nuclear power now or in 10 years' time? A majority voted for the later option, so a decade later they started shutting down nuclear plants because "the people said so".

Not voting is one of the strongest messages of disapproval that one can send to the regime. Apartheid in South Africa when voter turnout reached 7%. Similarly we need to bring down our DemoPublican regime by not voting in national elections and voting for third-party candidates at the local and state levels, and for selected Congressional elections.

Until there is a none of the above option on the ballot, and decent third party ballot access, nobody should support compulsory voting.

If you're disatisfied with the candidates and or parties, you can spoil your ballot simply by checking off every single box on the ballot.  That sends a much stronger message one is not happy with the choices rather than not showing up at all.

I voted twice in my life.

The first time I was young and innocent ad voted for Reagan.

The second time I asked myself why I needed to go through this bullshit.

Did they think I had changed my mind and become some fucking cock sucking socialist or something.

Decided to give it some thought and the answer hit me.

Needed to vote for someone, one time and one time only,  basically pledge my vote for the rest of my life.

looked at the candidates.

Only one stood out way above all the rest, someone who would 100 % look after me and my family and interests and would never shirk from that.

One who would still be there as long as I lived, and would spend whatever time was necessary to ensure  the things I cared about got taken care of.

Yes I voted for myself, didn't even wait until polling day and didn't even waste time with a fucking bit a of paper to play naughts and crosses on. Decided there and ten and made it permanent .

So now the fucking cock squatting fucking faggot Kenyan bath house trawling cock sucker and his fucking crony corrupt crews don't have to concern themselves.

Sometimes these  fucking retarded  clowns actually believe in the hustings they can get me to change my mind and vote for them instead of myself.

My vote is cast to the day I die.

And nothing will change that now.

America will be more in danger when illegal aliens can vote.

Absolute fools will be elected.

93%   African-American vote for Obama, down 2 percentage points from 2008, although 96%  of black women supported him.

64% of voters for Obama had no high school diploma.

The US has voluntary voting, and manages to consistently elect idiot sock puppets into public office.  Australia has manadory voting and manages to consistently elect idiot sock puppets into office.

Voluntary voting:  40% of the adult population chooses which TPTB-vetted candidate gets to be puppet for the next 4 years.

Mandatory voting: 92% of the adult population chooses which TPTB-vetted candidate gets to be puppet for the next 4 years.

Other than longer queues at polling stations, I'm struggling to see how it would change anything.

In the last election only 57.5% of registered voters voted.  This sends a pretty strong message in itself.  Americans are tired of the broken electoral system.  The 2016 elections are predicted to have even lower voter turnout. Let's see how low we can get it.  Under 50% would be amazing.

When the populace is taken in total, voting is "a measure of the effectiveness of the propaganda". Polls are just an earlier form of the same thing. The object is to get the polls to show what you want before you take the vote.

Knowing that, why "mandatory voting"? Well, there are several kinds of voters: 1) Informed; 2) Dis-Informed; 3) Clueless; 4) Careless

Only the "informed" votes represent democracy. All the other votes represent manipulation. So, if you're running a system through manipulation, you must dilute the (1)s in deference to all others which are most susceptible to propaganda.

The best way to do that? Demand that the non (1)s all vote, swamping the minority (1)s.

Democracy. What a joke!

If they hate them the probability increases that the person you voted for may actually be good for you.

Choosing not to vote is a choice. It sends the message that I do not approve and withhold my consent. Not voting is a legitmate option and the government should not have the power to take that option away.
