China Builds $6 Million Bridge To Nowhere

Tyler Durden's picture

As Beijing gets set to expand its global footprint via the launch of multinational institutions like the AIIB which are aimed squarely at disrupting the post-World War II economic order and shaking up a system that’s been underpinned by the notion of dollar hegemony for decades, it’s important that China keep up the momentum when it comes to besting the US wherever and whenever it can. Presumably that’s why the country sunk nearly $6 million and 12 months of work into building the world’s longest glass bridge that leads absolutely nowhere. The key point, apparently, is that the structure is a whopping 5 meters longer than its US competitor.

Via China.org

Workers are finishing the construction of a glass cantilever bridge in Longgang scenic area in Yunyang, Southwest China's Chongqing municipality. The transparent structure, 718 meters above the ground, has a cantilever extending 26.68 meters from the edge, five meters longer than the Grand Canyon Skywalk. The project, with a total investment of 35 million yuan($5.6 million), started in March 2014. The bridge has a carrying capacity of 1000 tons. [Photo/China News Service]

Didn't know there was a Grand Canyon Skywalk - was last there in 2000. Apparently it cost $30M to build. Gotta applaud the Chinese for doing it in $6M considering the significant inflation since '07?

But to anyone sniggering at China, their works tell a story, as does what is happening int he US, with collapsing bridges and all...

wow a whole $6m dollar bridge that is actually a major tourism investment

in Chongqing, a major tourism hub as Chinese domestic tourism rapidly begins to move into central China...

and this is somehow even remotely analagous to a $200m infrastructure bridge that likely gets less than 1/100th of the traffic volume

and i mean, fuck, China is LOADED absolutely FULL with great accurate 'bridge to nowhere' wasteful infrastructure examples...

WTF would you even need to use such a shitty example

Well said. What the fuck is with the reporting at zerohedge these days? I remember when this site used to be technical and educational. Now is all doom and gloom, conspiracy, race-baiting and just epic bullshit (not saying the doom and gloom isn't true, just saying that there is no need to overstate the case - you lose credibility when you inflate tiny issues into big monstrous issues).

Reminds me of the story on the Shanghai Index margin debt. "Oh look how bad China is doing".  Ok, sure there are issues in China right now, major issues, but why fucking blow something irrelevant out of proportion.

Any criticism of that observation platform should be purely on the aesthetics, which aren't all that...

That's nothing. In western Ukraine about ten years ago a replacement bridge was built over the River Prud. Everything was do according to proceedure and by the book. Everything was fine until a bussload of people went over and the bridge collapsed. It was then determined that absolutely nothing was done - the money was simply stolen. Dont think anyone was punished as this crime involved everyone in gvnt.

Just think what the US could do with all that money: (maybe a mil spec toilet seat for an F-35?)

The F-35 Lightning II was designed to be an affordable 5th Generation fighter, taking advantage of economies of scale  Since we built the first F-35, production costs have dropped 55 percent.

The most recent unit costs for Low Rate Initial Production lot 7 (not including the engine) are:

  • F-35A: $98 million
  • F-35B: $104 million
  • F-35C: $116 million

Since the F-35 program Technical Baseline Review in 2011, the team has studied and successfully implemented numerous affordability measures to drive costs out of the program.

Sometimes I think people post negativity just because it gives them some sort of self amusement.

There's a lot of crap to call China out on.......6 million for a scenic view and potential tourist draw doesn't sound all that bad to me when stacked next to the trillions of other things going shitty in the world.

Actually, the bridge was originally designed to go to Nowhere. However, following the economic downturn, the budget ran out. As the bridge is too narrow for traffic to turn around they had not choice but to turn the bridge back to where it started.

I think calling it a bridge to nowhere is a stretch.  It looks like a pretty cool observation platform.

Would you stand on that platform knowing it was built by the Chinese?

Not me!!!

I think the Chinese are plenty capable of building a safe bridge, building, etc.  I think their problem is quality of material that goes into building that bridge.

The Chinese high speed rail network is amazing in how fast its been built out.  Now it will be interesting to see if it holds up long term.

Question: When is a nice, modern viewing platform overlooking some pleasant scene of nature actually a bridge to nowhere? When ZeroHedge is involved, and apparently needs content filler.

For once I can unironically say "move along, nothing to see here."
