CNBC's SquawkBox Has Lowest Nielsen Rating In Its History
Days after Zero Hedge broke the news that CNBC had just suffered its worst ever ratings year in 2014...
... we weren't at all surprised to read in the WSJ that "CNBC will no longer rely on TV ratings specialist Nielsen to measure its daytime audience, beginning later this year. Instead, it has retained marketing and research firm Cogent Reports for the task."
WSJ further reported that "CNBC’s daytime Nielsen ratings, which always have been relatively small, have fallen sharply over the past decade. In 2014—its least-watched year since 1995—CNBC had an average audience of 177,000 people from the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to Nielsen. That is down 17% from an average of 214,000 viewers in 2004, and it is a drop of 13% from 2013."
It has gotten so bad WSJ is now actively losing leverage, and money, when discussing ads: "Executives at CNBC said they were leaving money on the table with advertisers and they needed to make a change. “Nielsen has never measured us accurately,” said CNBC President Mark Hoffman. “If we can’t count the people the right way we can’t get paid the right way.”"
The problem, for Mr. Hoffman and CNBC's ad revenues, is that Nielsen is still counting it audience in whatever way every other TV network that uses Nilsen is ok with, annd the results are, well, unfortunate.
As the following update of CNBC's perhaps most popular (if least watched, lagging even Mad Money) day breaking segment, SquawkBox, the show that features Joe Kernen, Becky Quick and Andrew Ross Sorkin just suffered its worst quarterly Nielsen rating in the prime, 25-54 demo, in the show's history.
Perhaps moving to NYC from Englewood Cliffs in order to procure more "valuable" guests wasn't quite the viewership panacea CNBC had hoped it would be, unless of course said move was merely predicated by budgeting considerations as a result of the above.

CNBC should just hire the BLS to adjust its ratings.
people watch CNBC when things arent all sunshine and unicorns. time for a little correction? we havent had a good "markets in turmoil" segment in over 3 years now.....
I only watch CNBC at my favorite watering hole cause my old bar tender buddy is addicted to it.
But it's hilarious when other patrons come in they alll say "get that shit off the screen" and put on ANYthing else!
CNBC & MSNBC...
The turds at the bottom of the MSM toilet bowl.
Yep- just turds circling the bowl............
All they need to do is devote the hours of 10am-330pm to info-mercial leased commercials featuring revolutionary mops and cleaning products. No volume during those hours anyway. Better yet, make Cramer and Liesman pitch the mops.
People are waking up and tired of being lied to. Ratings reflect the uselessness of Liesman, Pisani, and bleached milfs.
I loved the one piece of propaganda I saw earlier this year when Liesman was doing some econ recon, and all of the sudden "Becky we just happen to have a Fed official on the phone to help explain all of this...." LMFAO. Can't get any more engineered news than this crappy outfit.
I like bleached milfs...
Their viewership lows mimic market lows.
TIME TO BUY !!!!
I love watching Becky Quick.
She has a real purty mouth
The abysmall ratings of a news outlet which often relies on bleached newscasters suggests the mythical superiority of blond hair is just that - a myth.
Indeed, as a man with blond hair and blue eyes, I never understood the Western media's unhealthy obsession with blond hair and blue eyes.
Regardless of their ratings, they will remain on their air spewing garbage until things really roll off a cliff.
Then, and only then, will their usefulness end.
Until that time, there are sheep to be decieved.
Our brokerage has maybe 10 monitors, all tuned into CNBC, and nobody, and I mean NOBODY watches it.
And it's a full bowl. Last night ABC evening news had a story about the "controversy" the video of Tom Brady jumping off a cliff on vacation is causing online. I very rarely watch the evening news, but I had left the TV on after the local news and happened to pass by and see this story. Couldn't believe this drivel was on ABC World News Tonight.
They give us this "drivel" because they can't tell the truth about their hero, Obozo's shitty economy!
CNBC can lick my sweaty nut sack!
Be careful... some folks there just might take you up on that.
Simon Hobbs wants you to call him
CNBC gets most of its ratings from the giant TVS in the lobbies of brokerage offices and TVs in financial district bars. If you turned those backgound-noise TVs off, there wouldn't be much left.
Or just count all the ZH CNBC views since they link the shit out of their stuff on youtube.
OH SNAP!
BLS, what is that? Is it Bovine Lucrative Statistics?
Maybe their viewership has fallen, due to old viewers having gone broke on all the investment 'advice' they got from its paid shills, and current suckers in ICU?
They just told the truth their ratings would go through the roof.
Hear, hear!
It's was too FUCKING painful to listen to Stuttering JJJJJJJJJJOE, Becky blow Warren and Sorkin knob gob Obama.
Squawkbox? Isn't that just a euphemism for Hillary "What difference, at this point, does it make?!?!" Clinton?
I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do... www.nettrader2.com
Why don't you blow Kernan,he looks like he could use a thrill
CNBC is obviously a propaganda operation.
In a fair world they would pay you to tune in.
Bye, bye New Yawk media. You will be missed...,
like a tooth ache.
Unfortunately, they are not going away anytime soon. Considering the fact that the corporations that pay for this outlet to stay open have access to Federal Reserve funds at ZIRP, there is plenty more advertising revenue that will continue to flow to this pravda outlet. Carry on...
Take heart Dr.
Eg. The Sun News Network went away, regardless. Even Lenny Asper wouldn't touch it with someone else's ten foot pole.
Sun News was controlled opposition. Ezra Levant was mildly amusing, a sort of Canadian Seinfeld, but a conspicuously soft touch when it came to hard issues. Good riddance.
'controlled opposition' ? Opposition to whom, exactly? Certainly not the ruling 'conservatives'; it was more of a platform for floating 'trial balloons' on their (and their handlers') behalf. And Mr. Levant's touch is so conspicuously 'soft' that its cost him 80 large kanuck bux in libel damages.
But at least we agree wholeheartedly on your last sentiment.
I see no conflict between our descriptions. Levant and his colleagues were pawns. All networks are used to float slightly different groups of trial balloons to lure and hook different segments of the viewing audience. Sun News served its purpose, but people with conservative values tend to be an incisive bunch, harder to 'snow,' so the network never built enough audience to justify itself, and risked leading more people down thought-paths that could result in their waking up. Canadian media in general seems to be following the American trend of asking fewer meaningful questions, pushing more authorized narratives, and censoring, censoring, censoring. Fortunately, readership and viewership is tanking. People are sick of products. They want TRUTH.
Oh so that's why it failed: the people it planned to prestidigitate to were too perspicacious (h/t Rex Murphy)
What do you mean 'conservative values' anyway, fiscal or moral? Because the only literally fiscally conservative people since the industrial revolution to operate a gov't on the taxpayer's behalf are regulary referred to as 'socialists' by the Gary Allen addled majority here on ZH. And these same people were morally conservative enough to say 'No' to eugenics programs on their watch, unlike, say, administration after administration in Texas.
"People are sick of products. They want TRUTH."
Hahaha! even that entire demographic whom you've indicated are, uh, not so hard to 'snow'?
I missed your reply until today. You're right: I was thinking that 'conservative' is glib, naive and inaccurate. Pity the shortness of these exchanges and the lack of a more precise lexicon. There is a fast-growing group of people who want to avoid the usual myths and pratfalls of traditional economic and political discourse. What do you call them?
This should be stating the obvious: Levant is marketed as a political journalist, appealing to a capital-C 'Conservative' political audience, focusing soft-touch criticism on left-of-centre figureheads. He's satirical, barely controversial, just truthy enough to entertain, but lacking depth of conviction. Harder blows could be struck, if that was his purpose, especially if his focus was moral. The trouble with morality is that we live in an age of fashionable relativism. Take a firm moral stand in public affairs, and you will be attacked.
If I interpret your reference to the writer Gary Allen correctly, your message is that he challenged orthodoxy and would regard mainstream conservatism as too left-of-centre.
Hope your weather is warm.
They'll be directly state funded soon enough and renamed BBCNBC. They'll import some pedophiles from London to run it.
Get rid of Sorkin and Liesman and shills for the government and it will be much more worth while watching.
Rick Santelli all the time
CNBC Europe seems to be the networks most competent operation, and you will often find the more critical coverage here. The reporting, especially when from Greece or Russia or from Frankfurt, tends to paint a much more realistic economic picture versus what is reported from the US (which is why only snippets of coverage from Europe are shown in the US). The difference in the amount of propaganda is huge. Cramer´s show is never shown over here.
I observed on WorldWide Exchange that the ticker includes all the forex cross pairs and sovereign bond rates rather than a constant barrage of equity quotes. They still beat the "DEFLATION IS BAD" drum for Europe (but never say bad for who).
2 thumbs up.
We turn the volume on in the doctors lounge when Rick appears
This is what happens when only 100 people trade anymore
If there is any motherfucker they need to fire, it's that fascist cocksucker Kernen. He'd be a Loyalist during the American Revolution he's such an ass kissing dickbag.
you mean HFT algo trading.
I still like Santelli--he may have to go back to trading for a living.
is cramer still at cnbc?
Santelli = Manufactured Dissent.
Santelli is just playing bad cop to create the illusion there is some objectivity. Now, we all know better, dont we. He would blow a donkey to keep that job.
Although he does like to rip Andrew Ross Sorkin for being a bleeding heart liberal, which is pretty funny.
What's CNBC?
CNBS...
"side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of common sense, loss of savings and income, and lastly loss of chics as a result..."
Canadian NBC...they show curling, Hudson Bay Freezing/unfreezing, get rich trapping shows, hockey, ice fishing, midget eskimo tossing...stuff like that
seems no one believe in this BS
Their ratings would go way up if they just had a blank screen with updated FOMC minutes
RIP Mark Haines
Mark Haines on 9/11 was outstanding.
Can we get an update on the golf channel morning show ratings now that Holly Sonders is no longer on the show? It has to look similar.
Forced me to Goggle who the fuck Holly Sonders is. Thank You.
cause for celebration?
Sorkin belongs in Blankfein's buddy basement.
What's with the stupid human vids, William?
Do you know something we don't? ;)
even when "muted" still hard to watch those assholes...
The propaganda is designed to work even when muted.
Cut the cord 4 or 5 years ago and never looked back.
It's amazing the clarity you develop when you're away from the incessant background propaganda.
Seeing television after being away actually seems like they're talking to 5 year olds. The point being, after a few years off you can't even take it any more without becoming nauseous.
Is that last Chart in % or actual viewers? I may know a couple of those guys...
I have the TV turned on to CNBC every morning during SquawkBox - but I don't actually watch the show very often - I just want to be able to relax, have a cup of coffee and see what the futures are doing.
They really need to get some fresh talent -
That girl that did the Carl's Jr Super Bowl commercial just got booted from dancing with the stars (my wife watches - I couldn't help but notice) - she would do just fine.

I like the idea. Like the scantily-clad weather announcers in spanish-speaking countries. That Drury girl with Australian accent is mesmerizing.
Go look at photos & videos of Drury when she was 20-ish .... top-quality!
Very inspiring ad - anyone know why they pulled it ?
Did the anti-sausage-eater's lobby complain ?
Was it because she did not use a napkin to wipe the dripping jizz ?
She looks smart. She's hired.
thanks...that brightens the day...who cares the market does
It's likely that Nielsen doesn't count CNBC viewers accurately. It's viewers are heavily skewed towards white males age 18-30 (front-line brokers and financial salespeople) and age 55-70 (not working anymore, retired).
If Nielsen is calling little old ladies in Idaho and welfare moms in Brooklyn for their surveys, that wouldn't reflect the viewership very accurately.
If Bernanke et al accomplished anything it was making people not give two fucks about the market. No one is buying stocks. No one wants bonds. No one wants cash! I mean when Yellen has to admit cash is not money and has no store of value/wealth, seriously, what are people going to do?
They are going to spend it on drinks (when I buy a beer under $5 I feel like I've found a deal), food, clothes, travel; people want to feel good and hording cash/stocks/bonds is equivelent to owning gold to most people now. Fuck the future, the time is meow!
I'd rather be force fed apple sauce in a tube at Guantanimo Bay that watch Andrew Ross Sorkin tell me about the "markets"
Orally or anally?
Kernan and MC^3 after Buddy Romer interview in 2012. (para)
Joe: I don't think that guys gets it.
MC^3: Well, he has an MBA from Harvard ...
Joe: But its not like he got to hang out at the grove, like we did.
I dropped cable T.V. shortly after that. Don't miss it at all.
lol fucking grove. If we could carpet bomb that place mid summer we would rid the world of most the rats.
Kernan = total dickhead. I will give Mandy a little look once in a while. She's a honey.
"Lowest in hispotry," ... at least they're 'exceptional' at something.
Too much Cramer for starters. And with all of the constant progandizing of central planning politics, superstar treatment for Buffet, Cook..., and constant interruptions to air the latest statement from the WH, CNBC has become utterly unwatchable. Somewhere along the line, they forgot that it is a show for INVESTORS.
Bear Sterns is fine!
The leh cfo. erin callan, came on and said, "lehman is just fine. we are solvent!" A few days later they were bk. she never served a night in jail. she moved to the hapmtons and married some fireman. she is living the good life on the backs of many dead investors that watch cnbc. they are filth. she is, too
I agree with all that you wrote up to "they forgot that it is a show for INVESTORS"
Obviously the CNBC management decided to transform the show into "news entertainment", so that it is increasingly marginally about investing.
How much could the show be oriented towards capitalism, free markets, investing, etc since
1. we don't have those anymore
2. hiring socialist coercive-collectivism obomination cheerleader effete sorkin as a full-time propagandist ?
Looks like a sell divergence in the Stock market price to CNBC viewship chart. Also, even that key demographic knows bullshit when they hear it.
Was gonna watch it the other day but found something better to do, that sock drawer had gotten unruly.
CNBC is to be viewed on "mute". The less one hears from a buffoon like Liesman and the pabulum that Becky, Kernen and Sorkin daily feed the "blind" the better for those that are informed by knowledgeable people in the business. The latter one does not see on CNBC and if they do the CNBC gang try to discredit them. Better stay away and ignore dealing with "puppets" for the banksters and the "elite". Comeuppance is in the air and will hit CNBC even worse when all starts to tumble like a :house of cards".
No one cares about the market any more. Not even fucking day traders. Who wants to waste time pushing buttons?
Still waiting on the iShares Cramer triple inverse ETF.
Bubble Head Bleach Blond Luciferians!
Send your congratulations to the bigggest asshole on the cnBS desk joe.kernen@nbcuni.com (if you taunt him enough he sometimes does respond)
Will we get put on a list?
I mean I'm not sure if they have on site FCC Agents and other government agents monitoring. Maybe you end up as a Government Employee if you work for US Main Stream Media.
That would be the logical approach after
- Church Committee
- Nedzi Committee
- Pike Committee
- Rockefeller Commission
I got responses from Liesman before when I called him out on lying. I started emailing him everyday and he quit responding after 3-4. The responses were really childish, like when did I lie? I just sent him a link to his own words and he shut up
When the Fed prints your invoicing currency, and is right across the street from you, does it matter if no one watches?
Seems to me that there are still 177,000 viewers too many.
I think the tvs at the airport only have one channel and that's it. Doesnt mean anyone is watching.
Andrew Ross wrote that book fawning all over Hank Paulson, Ben Bernanke, the VICHY Wall Street Banks, and probably VICHY Washington DC.
I guess history has turned on him.
I might tune in if Quick got naked just to satisfy a curiousity.
Kernan is such a major douchebag
I might tune in to watch Sorkin's execution provided it was painful. And for sure I would tune in to watch Liesman finally get his. Fucker
the only reason people watch is to see the horrified looks on their stupid faces on down days. no down days, no viewers.
... but, but Becky will lose her job when CNBS goes under.
Warren Buffet can always use girl next door eye candy around to motivate the shy, nerdy LLMs in his personal, wholely owned law firm dedicated to make sure he never pays/file taxes in his entire life. That and/or his personal secretary might be getting tired of the 35% deal.
Dirty old man Buffet like to fly Beckie Quickie around in his private jet.
Fuck CNBS & SquatSux !
Because it sucks
Joe Kernen says something pro-business/conservative, Becky Quick smirks and hopes she doesn't have a hair out of place from bobbing up and down on Warren Buffet's knob, and Andrew Ross Sorkin is still trying to perfect his Anderson Cooper look and muffle his adulation for Obama and the left.
CNBC quickly got rid of any anchors with balls or guts that questioned the insanity or lost it on air (Dylan Ratigan, Jeff Macke, Melissa Francis). They even lost ole' nugget nipples Bartiromo to Fox!
Algos don't watch TV
But.....maybe.....watch the fucking dip (WTFD ©) !!!
Must be the proletariat are sick and tired of feeling ill and fatigued by these fucking cunts pissing down their necks all the while telling said folks its fucking raining.
Selling your very soul for the coin they print from thin air to obfuscate, outright lie, and fuck off the population you should be fucking loyal to?
Who knows??
Cunts
;-)
“Nielsen has never measured us accurately,” said CNBC President Mark Hoffman. “If we can’t count the people the right way we can’t get paid the right way.”"

Slideshow Presentation: Rig(ht) Counting...What the right way means to you and me.
Attendees: Sr. Nielson Account Manager & Mark Hoffman
People who still believe in the casino markets still watch, and thus...
I watch it for a few minutes every morning to start the day laughing my butt off. I'll bet their revenue comes from what their 'guests' pay to push what they'd like to sell.
I wonder what the ratings would look like for a business show that documented Wall Street crime, government fraud, craziness, global mayhem, and real risk on assets. I bet ya the Nielson ratings would pop up then. People tune out because they don't trust the fantasy being peddled by CNBC. Might as well go do something more entertaining and equally useless.
Might as well go do something more entertaining and equally useless.
Sad but true. Especially considering as recently as yesterday we have top government officials still blaming things in 2105 on the 2008 crash. Whose job would it be to prevent another one by putting some of the bad actors in Jail? Even just two year stints in the country club ones? ... Obviously not the government. They are in the speech giving business.
Waiting for the law introducted into Congress requiring you to watch. Right after the law passes requiring you to vote.
when they start showing the live guillotining of wrong doers I will start watching...kick it off with Corzine!
What is the naked_news.com change in viewership over the same time. That is a strange site that has only beautiful nude women reading offf the news on that internet site. The strange thing is that its news is less biased and often better than cnbc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_News
It is now based in Toronto Canada that allows topless dress for both genders in downtown public. So Some news interviews in public on the street are by topless beautiful women. Hint: News crew easily gets people to interview.
Andrew Ross Dorkin and Betsy "get down on Warren's dick" Quick: Could their be a more uniformative pairing of Hosts? Yep, just add Joe Kernan.
Ten years ago I watched it. Then I switched to the internet for all my political and financial news. I never looked back!
Am I the only one to observe that at the same time Tyler gleefully announces whenever CNBC's ratings hit a new low, while at the same time it is obvious based on his/their posts he/they watch CNBC 24/7?
Sun Tzu I guess.
Zero percent interest rates don't work. Plunging necklines and heavy eye make-up don't work either. When will they learn?
What advertiser is going to trust their "new" ratings? How about this, get some better programming and compete.
Bring Trish Regan back and I will watch 24 hours a day.
I stopped watching CNBS 15 years ago and got market clarity in return.
I stopped watching once they no longer had Corzine as a "tax cutting Govenor" on ......I always need a good laugh in the morning
"get that shit off the screen"
About sums it up.
Why do people have to watch it when everyone assumes the indexes hit new highs monthly.
Wallstreet front office jobs continue to contract - they should hire former analysts, traders & salespeople. Get rid of people like Rick Santelli & keep a few reporters to ask meaniningful questions of their guest(s).
Wallstreet front office jobs continue to contract - they should hire former analysts, traders & salespeople. Get rid of people like Rick Santelli & keep a few reporters to ask meaniningful questions of their guest(s).
Algo's don't watch CNBC so no point anyone else doing so.
Dead format, no more retail investors remaining.
I only watch if I want to see two diametrically opposed opinions on the same thing. Or a politician or CEO reciting their pre-approved by Legal Department spewology.
More hot babes. Then I'll watch.
Dylan Rattigan plus Melissa Lee at the Squawk Box Block! That would stir things up. Dylan would excoriate the status quo, and Melissa could shred any analyst or "guru" that didn't have his/her stuff in order.
The current group are dull, both in demeanor and in intellect. Personally, I like Cramer; but he is a huckster, with a demeanor more suitable to sell miracle cleansers or food processors on the Home Shopping Network. Faber and Sorin are straight men. They have good qualities about them; but they are as dry as they are insightful. Becky Quick? Please move to "The View"! Joe Kurnan? Get a seat on "The Five" or "Red Eye" on Fox!
Everyone, who watched Squawk Box back in the day, fondly remembers and deeply appreciates Mark Haines. Even Tom Keene on Bloomberg is no more than a shadow of that man. But he is gone! Jon Stewart -and I am being serious about this - is the only person I can think of, who can bring them back and keep them in their seats, day after day after day.
I remember Mark Haines' on-the fly reporting of 9-11 as it happened.
Cronkite had nothing on the job Haines did that day.
How he got teamed up with that gang of mutts and buffoons I'll never know.
I wonder what would happen to their ratings if CNBC, as a last resort of course, made an attemt at honest objective news reporting?
Common Sense Economics

it's okay to visit fantasyland once in awhile but don't get carried away with it
The problem with CNBC is a total lack of credibility. It is unfortunate that they are a designated propaganda arm of the Wall Street banks.
Cheerleaders get a tiring to watch, especially when they get old and you find our they have the insight of a kumquat.
i only watch when rick santelli is on.
when hes off, or just not on, dont even bother turning it on.
Why would anyone watch that blithering idiot?
Only other blithering idiots.
if u think hes an idiot, i can only imagine what u think of everyone else on that station.
hes the only one who actually has a clue on that station, and hes very anti fed also. works for me.
Remember CNNfn? That was CNN's answer to CNBC. Geezers may recall that CNNfn was cautioning investors about tech stocks just before that bubble burst. CNBC, meanwhile, was going gung ho! on tech stocks, and even apologized after the tech crash for missing it.
And which business network survived?
If they ran Steve Liesmann 24x7 the ratings would be the same but the could cut the budget by 98%.
Down hill since Mark Haines was murdered.
The last sane mane at CNBC.
I don't include Art Cashin & Rick.
Kernan sputters so badly that he only finishes about 25% of the sentences he starts. Can't imagine what he's going to be like when he retires. Maybe should be checked for Alzheimer's. Sorkin is the poster child for NYC nepotism and given his relative youth is just about as delusional as they come. Quick could be replaced by a robot and it would probably be a few days before anybody noticed. She is most proud of being CNBC's person for interviewing Warren Buffet. Been going nowhere in a hurry her entire life. Future likely holds addiction to anti-depressants and plastic surgery.
Kernan is a lizard.
The Lizard Anti-Defamation League will be in touch shortly.
SquawkBox Has Lowest Nielsen Rating In Its History
...why wouldn't it?
Is there anyone who actually hasn't figured out that the media organ and it's reguritating stenographers are merely (far too) high-paid shills for a fix and phony, financial kleptocracy?
Is the depravity not yet apparent enough, that government and media underlings continue paying fealty to unaccountable, liquidity driven, corporate monstrosities, the likes of which are preying on a common good (sustainable healthy society) as well as a distessed planet, experiencing ever-increasing spasms of violence.
All this so a handful of overlords can virtually accumulate power and wealth beyond anything YOU could ever concieve. Indeed, our modern day "Squawkers" would have made Joeseph Goebbels very proud. All hail the self-correcting, unfettered, corruptness of "I'm Too Big".
They'd be better off shutting down. Everybody hates Goldman Sachs. Arrest Lloyd Blankfein. They are criminals.
People are tired of listening to the same old pumping on this shill channel.
It lacks credibility.
CNBC doesn't need to pump stocks. The Federal Reserve already does that.
Change the people and the format if you want to boost ratings station heads.
only at CNBS do u hv a salary of $22M but a net worth of $14m
http://www.therichest.com/celebnetworth/celeb/tv-personality/joe-kernen-...
Seriously if they Kernan $22K he's overpaid. what a douchebag
Taxes take 11 Million and blow\hookers takes the rest.. Or this would be my bio.
who?
Is it "Kernen Claptrap Hour" or "The Suck Up To Joe Show "?
Unfortunately for CNBS algo-headline-scanning (or is that scamming) "bots" don't count.
When you orient your programming to the top 1%, don't expect to ever get 2% of the audience.
