Why Putin Doesn't Need To Pander To The West

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Colin Chilcoat via OilPrice.com,

It’s quiet on the eastern front – as quiet as a conflict between world superpowers can be. Since February’s cease-fire agreement, relative calm has prevailed in Ukraine and world events elsewhere – Iran and Yemen – have shifted the global focus. Still, the West’s frigid relationship with Russia is no less chilly and antagonism, not cooperation, remains the modus operandi. Long-term, the stalemate looks to continue, but can either side afford such a result? And if not, who cracks first?

The prevailing judgment is that Russia cannot. And at surface level it’s a fair assessment. The Bank of Russia predicts the economy will contract by between 3.5 and 4 percent in 2015 and by another 1 percent in 2016; the ruble, while stable, is still down approximately 40 percent since June of last year. In all, former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin believes the events in Crimea will cost the Russian economy as much as $200 billion over the next three to four years. The political and economic situation is fraught with grey area however, and no one turns grey to green quite like president Vladimir Putin.

As Putin embarks on his 16th year at the helm – I’m counting 2008-2012 – he faces a situation not too dissimilar from his first year in office: a sluggish economy, falling standard of living, high capital flight, and low foreign direct investment. Russia’s demographics look good and its equity market is a top pick for 2015, but in the short-term, the country’s macro indicators don’t yield much hope.

Now, as in 2000, Putin will ride oil through to the finish. In that regard, the World Bank forecasts favorable price growth to the quarter-century mark. By 2018, Russia’s Minister of Economic Development Alexei Ulyukaev expects the economy to out-perform high-income economies globally. The longevity of such a strategy is questionable; it’s risky – and probably the only realistic course of action – but Putin doesn’t have to wait out the rough patch, only his competitors.

In Europe, the cracks are beginning to show.

On March 16, the United States effectively removed any easing of sanctions from the table – the State Department will continue to support and enforce sanctions as long as Russia continues to occupy Crimea. Germany, in song with the US, remains committed to the cause and German Chancellor Angel Merkel reiterated the nations’ shared ideology in statements to the European Council on March 19. That same day, European Union leaders collectively agreed to back sanctions until the Minsk accord bears fruit. Individually, the agendas differ significantly.

EU officials believe that up to half of the member nations are ready to scale back sanctions. Among the most vocal in their discontent are Austria, Cyprus, Hungary, Italy, Greece, Slovakia, and Spain.

Greece in particular is inching closer to Russia. The nation is on the brink of default and has yet to agree on bailout terms with EU officials. Newly elected Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will meet with Putin in Moscow on April 8 – a meeting that many believe is to establish a back-up plan to EU financing. Tsipras’ trip follows that of his Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis, who returned to Greece March 31 after securing Russian commitments to participate in an upcoming tender for deep-sea oil and gas exploration in the Ionian Sea.

In Hungary, Putin and Hungarian President Viktor Orban have finalized a $10.8 billion loan agreement that will see Russia finance the expansion of Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant. Whether it’s providing genuine aid or not, Russia’s message to the EU is clear – it won’t be stopped.

The growing piecemeal arrangements make obvious the sanctions’ limits – there’s not much further they can go – and demonstrate that nobody wants to be the last one to the table when the sanctions do indeed drop.

Russia possesses tremendous opportunity for growth and with no lack of suitors – east or west – Putin is in no hurry to pander to the US or EU hardliners.

Here's an alternative view from Handelsblatt: http://www.handelsblatt.com/politik/international/partnersuche-auf-russi...

I'd tend to be more on Handelsblatt's side, Russia is backed into a corner without any leverage and I seriously doubt if those supposedly fantastic energy deals with China are so great at all.

Other than the energy sector, Russia has almost no other industries to fall back on and everything they produce (electronics, cars, airplanes) is of such inferior quality that nobody else buys it.

They should have modernized and diversified much more, like China, and perhaps initially cater more to the West in order to build up leverage. Instead they stuck to the only 3 things they know; pump oil/gas, oppress the people with a massive surveilance state, and make shady deals with oligarchs and mafia kingpins.

I'm sorry, but this Handelsblatt article is simply misleading.

For example:

"Other than the energy sector".... as if this isn't one of the most important industries in the entire world.  Without energy, everything else is scrap. Why is America constantly invading countries with energy resources?

The article also neglects the robust military sales by Russia, and minor matters such as trillions in mineral resources.

Your last statement, "oppress the people with a massive surveilance state, and make shady deals with oligarchs and mafia kingpins"  easily applies to the US and to most of the world.

Not just Bismarck. It is the great fear of the US - The Mackinder Plan - Germany with Russia's resources as before 1914 when Siemens was dominant in Russia and Baku oilfields were the major play. Germany needs Russia and France needs Russia or their middle classes will sink into the proletariat. China plus Russia is what will force Europe to succumb because the US  TTIP policy will reduce Europe to full colony status and bring revolution which is why the US is deploying weapons to Europe and having its Dragoon Ride across the continent and no doubt waving Art 6 of the NATO Charter to show Greece how coups come about

Another ZH piece promoting Putistan.

It is important to understand that Russia today is a totally different country than Russia before the Zionist-Bolshevik revolution of 1917. (Well, the same is true for the USA before and after FED was created).

Today, Russia became a gas-station for China and EU. Under Putin watch, Russia economy, healthcare, and education system were decimated. A huge number of Russia scientists and highly educated people have left Russia for America, Canada, and EU. The present Russia elite is not Russian anymore and their families and assets are kept outside of Russia. Putin own children live in EU and the Lavrov (Russia Foreign Secretary) family reside in America. It is just a matter of time before this "Russian" elite (mostly Jews) will overthrow Putin. This Zionist elite, being controlled from New York, the City of London, and Tel Aviv, has no desire to live under China control.

Where is YOUR proof? You can't deny that many educated Russians have left Russia and now work and live abroad. Where are the details of that supposedly fantastic energy deal with China? How much is China really paying for Russian gas and oil? The Chinese are savy business people and I seriously doubt that they are paying top Dollar/RMB for Russian energy now that Putin has effectively castrated Russia's leverage.

This might be worth a read, but you'll probably dismiss it as well as "propaganda:" http://www.handelsblatt.com/politik/international/partnersuche-auf-russi...

About Russia they will be self sufficient soon (oil and gas export was only 18% of GDP in 2013). How will end West without Russian resources and wast market? Well current Somalia or Yemen maybe Ukraine is a good example for the Wests future.

The US continues its full spectrum war against Putin and Russia.  First there are sanctions. Then there is the attack on oil prices.  There are hundreds of CIA, FBI and Blackwater personnel in Ukraine today.  And Obama is sending a regiment to train Ukrainian troops and may send weapons soon.  The Congress voted to send weapons to Russia with a vote of 348-48. Not a single member of Congress took the floor to oppose this dangerous resolution.

Putin will have to ride out this attack from Obama and the warmongering Neocons.  Meanwhile the demonization of Putin by the free and fair press of the West continues unabated:

Since the beginning of the week, the three most influential mass circulation newsmagazines of the United States, Britain, and Germany—Time, The Economist, and Der Spiegel—have published cover stories that combine wild accusations against Vladimir Putin with demands for a showdown with Russia.

The most striking and obvious characteristic of these cover stories is that they are virtually identical. The CIA has scripted them all. The stories employ the same insults and the same fabrications. They denounce Putin’s “web of lies.” The Russian president is portrayed as a “depraved” mass murderer.

This appears to have been written by a business person, perhaps with a position to unwind or defend.

The Minsk agreement will be soon abandoned and Ukraibe hostilities will escalate very soon, but for very pragmatic reasons:
1. It is difficult to move heavy equipment around in the mud during the late winter and early spring period when frost is coming out of the ground, They are sitting ducks for artillery and neither side wants to lose what they have, hence the ceasefire.
2. The current boundaries are not natural and sustainable, if Donetsk and Luhansk are to be either independent or semi-autonomous, the political boundaries must be much further west.
3. Ukraine (aka US proxy) needed time, money and equipment to rebuild it’s military, but it seems unlikely that what has been done so far will be sufficient to recapture Donetsk and Luhansk.
4. The puppet master (USA) does not yet have what they want, regime change in Moscow and/or the breakup of Russia into smaller harmless republics.
5. Russia does not yet have what it wants, either regime change in Kiev and/or a secure land and rail corridor to Crimea.

So we can safely predict that the next round will commence within no more than 6 weeks. As the conflict escalates, it will become more and more difficult for the main combatants (US & RU) in the proxy war to conceal the extent of their involvement.

History (recent, and very recent) has shown that those who control ("own") the majority of assets of value in the US / EU are extremely reluctant to "share", preferring (by words and actions) to acquire more, in what may be nothing more than a battle of egos (along the lines of "My Pile's bigger than Your Pile").

Those in control have stated many times, very often overtly, their disdain for the "Lesser Classes" - or "Useless Eaters" - "Dr" Kissinger was referring to the elderly, but the mindset amongst the Ruling Elite encompasses all those whose existence is of no "benefit" to the members of the Big Boys (and Girls) Club.

Those in control would quite like a "traditional", high-carnage war, especially one fought "somewhere else" so their homes / boats / toys are at no risk of damage. What a "great way" to encourage the masses to "fight for Freedom" - and conveniently significantly reduce the head-count of swathes of people for whom realistic, rewarding "employment" is no more.

Lots of "Business Opportunities" too, especially once the Government decides to impose Martial Law (which they will - all that ammo was bought for a reason) - "opportunities" for the connected to indulge in real "theft at the point of a gun", with NO threat of any, let alone effective, push-back.

Maybe they should answer the questions on the broadcast license applications honestly, their privledges would then be returned ;-)

Maybe you would like to tell the readers here whom funds the 'independant' Tatar media and why an honest answer on the above applications is not provided. ;-)

Maybe you can tell us how you manage to see the keyboard to type while your face is burried in Putin's ass?  But what difference does it make?  What does it have to do with the legitimate national asperations of the Tartars, the Ukrainians or any of the other dozens on peoples the Russians have subjected to mass deportations, mass executions and/or mass starvation over the centuries?  Since when have the Russians ever ever apologised for their crimes against humanity?  When were they ever punished for the fact that they killed more in the Gulags than the Germans did in the concentration camps?

So how is Russian 21st century revanchism any different than German 20th century revanchism? Just because the venal corruption in Washington and Brussels is palpable does not make the Kremlin into Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

So you can't answer the question then. I'm shocked I tell you, shocked!

Do you have anything to support your assertion regarding independent Tatar media in Crimea? You Russophobes are well known for distortions and fantasy.

Maybe you should read som history of Russian repression of the Tatars sice the 1700's, including Stalin's mass deportations.

Stalin wasn't a Russian.

My what an appropriate moniker.  Stalin instituted "Socialism in a single state" i.e. national socialism, Russia was his instrument.  That makes him a Russian in my book.  Catherine the Great was German by birth. Was she not Russian? President Sarkozy is of Polish extraction.  Is he not French? The Plantagent kings of England were of Norman extraction. Were they not English?  Next thing you'll tell us all those former Russian occupied nations were forced to declare their independence because they loved their Russian occupiers.  Oh wait, I forgot, it was all a massive Jewish conspiricy to embarass the Kremlin!  Never mind.

Something a bit odd I've noticed about these commenters who cower in fear whenever Putin is mentioned. They fancy a lot on cocks and sucking cocks and always more and more cocks.

Strange how many of them have these fantasies of cocks and butthole sodomy to the point of obsession. Maybe they are speaking to each other in code somehow.

Since the Tatars captured and sold Russians and Slavs to the Ottomans as slaves perhaps that "repression" would be as justified as sinking some British boats over a tea tax.

The recent independent polls in Crimea state that all groups support annexation by Russia;
"One year after the annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula in the Black Sea, poll after poll shows that the locals there — be they Ukrainians, ethnic Russians or Tatars are mostly all in agreement: life with Russia is better than life with Ukraine."

That is from Forbes, hardly the most pro-Russian source on the planet:

Tatars were slave traders.

Brutal

They raided especially into what is now South Ukraine and Crimea

Even almost to Moscow once

They took beautiful women for sex slave market, stronger others for labor and killed old and help;ess..

They needed repressed....

Russians finally put end to it and save a lot of Ukrainians.

Urainians, many, seem to forgot that...

It would be interesting to read a thorough analysis of the current state of the Russian economy. I am still waiting to read one. Kudrin's remark on the annexation cost of the Krim has been wildly reported in western media but I think they got it all wrong particularly those that wrote about 200 billion cost annually. Kudrin talked about three waves of sanctions, one of which is in existence and two more have been drawn up. The next wave of sanctions, he said, could potentially trigger capital outflows of 50 billion per quarter. Capital outflow is not to be confused with cost. Unfortunately our press prints the releases from the news agencies without checking and hence they all copy the same bullshit.
