Californians Outraged As Oil Producers & Frackers Excluded From Emergency Water Restrictions
California's oil and gas industry is estimated (with official data due to be released in coming days) to use more than 2 million gallons of fresh water per day; so it is hardly surprising that, as Reuters reports, Californians are outraged after discovering that these firms are excluded from Governor Jerry Brown's mandatory water restrictions, "forcing ordinary Californians to shoulder the burden of the drought."
California should require oil producers to cut their water usage as part of the administration’s efforts to conserve water in the drought-ravaged state, environmentalists said on Wednesday.
Governor Jerry Brown ordered the first statewide mandatory water restrictions on Wednesday, directing cities and communities to cut their consumption by 25 percent. But the order does not require oil producers to cut their usage nor does it place a temporary halt on the water intensive practice of hydraulic fracturing.
California’s oil and gas industry uses more than 2 million gallons of fresh water a day to produce oil through well stimulation practices including fracking, acidizing and steam injection, according to estimates by environmentalists. The state is expected to release official numbers on the industry’s water consumption in the coming days.
“Governor Brown is forcing ordinary Californians to shoulder the burden of the drought by cutting their personal water use while giving the oil industry a continuing license to break the law and poison our water,” said Zack Malitz of environmental group Credo.
“Fracking and toxic injection wells may not be the largest uses of water in California, but they are undoubtedly some of the stupidest,” he said.
The industry has received scrutiny for how it disposes of undrinkable water produced during oil drilling. Last month the state ordered the operators of 12 wells to halt injections of the water out of fear that it could contaminate fresh drinking water supplies.
...
In an interview with the PBS Newshour on Wednesday, Brown indicated that curbing oil industry water use would not help a state so dependent on petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel.
“If we don’t take it out of our ground, we’ll take it out of someone else’s,” Brown said.
Suck it up, or well don't as the case may be, serfs.

Oil's got electrolytes.
Then the profits can go towards starting bottled water companies and selling it back to Californians. Suckers.
And ya gotta get the oil to make all those bottles too!
I didn't think about that. Virtuous circle jerk!
Has anybody actually gone through the CA water use data? 2,000,000 gallons might as well be 0 gallons per day given the scale of California's water use. It's in the noise. It is nothing compared to agriculture use. It's such a small percentage that it means nothing. People are getting their panties in a bind over nothing.
Why, that's the most water usage SINCE LEHMAN!
They can't be too outraged, they contine to vote for all these nuts that run the state. Memo to my fellow Californians: when you vote for idiots, don't be surprised when they do something idiotic. It's not complicated.
Exactly. When you pay public lifeguards $200,000/year, you have to have some business making money that the gov't can forcibly take money from in order to pay off all the d'bag depdendents.
Nearly all of the water consumed/used in CA is used by commercial users, yet it is the slaves who will be penalized for watering their puny lawns. Do as your master says, slaves.
Corporations are individuals, people are mice.
The Supine Court has made that pretty clear.
The Frackers aren't using the water. They are simply moving it.
2 million gallons is about 6 acre feet per day, or the amount of water 7 average CA families use annually. Annually, it's water for 2500 households.
Plenty of water in Cali. Only problem it is not where people live. The Klamath river is all they need. So move Silicon valley there and Tesla production too. Hell, move the Gov residence and the state capital too. Maybe Yreka or Weed?
God, not Weed. ANYWHERE but Weed. Hell, Yreka is a paradise compared to Weed.
Weed, CA -- hehe.
Consumers use the least, and over 70% of freshwater is in iceburgs....no pipline proposals for water from Denali are there?

Funny to read how suddenly the Mises sheep is calling for a stronger state and more regulations to keep the problems for the public in check. Somehow the market is not caring about the problems individual greed is creating, eh?
The exclusion of fracking companies should be like music in the ears of neoliberal ZHers, since god market and individual greed was the best problem solver and the state was evil and government should be abandoned. And then crying for mummy...
I am also missing the sheep that have been hailing fracking here on ZH and denounced any regulation as an evil agenda? Where are they, celebrating neoliberal policy now?
Have you ever heard the term 'commisymplant'? I don't use it much (due to the fact that most people have no comprehension of it's true meaning). It's somewhat like the longest word in the English language that is actually validated ('Antidisestablishmentarianism'). It's made up of several contractions of words, you know. Communist-sympathetic (deep) planted (operative).

Sorry to jump in here, but just want to say poisoning the ground water is a crime and should be dealt with as such.
i do not see the problem, the ink entreprises will again make money with all the nice green weed you gonna paint all over the garden just to make you even better...
Never fear....Moonbeam Jerry will save us all!
Is the mike off? Yeah, we're screwed.
Facts are such vicious things.
QUESTION:
SINCE the frackers in California are using 2 million gallons of potable water per day (the 'offals' will give the 'human resource masses' a 'report' on this, as soon as they decide to, and since it's the GOVERNMENTOCRACY OFFALS PROCLAIMING to the sheople, it MUST BE THE TRUTH, RIGHT?); and these fracking waters are mixed with a list of chemicals to make their fracking job fracking easier; and these chemicals (some of them, or actually a great deal of them) render water unpotable at extremely small measured amounts (in the -less-than-ten-parts per billion range); and there is no way to separate some of these chemicals from the water to make it potable again; and fracking companies have been verifiably found to have dumped this toxic slurry into at least THREE MAJOR AQUIFERS within the state; and these (at least THREE) aquifers can no longer be used for irrigation, washing, drinking, or anything ELSE: How many 'litres' (over here in 'Merkuh, we spell it 'LITERS', but most of the sheople don't realize that this is 33.8 fluid ounces, or just barely over a QUART) of clean water is left over in the polluted aquifers for Kalifornicators to drink?
A list of SOME of the MOST COMMONLY USED chemicals may be seen HERE:
http://fracfocus.org/chemical-use/what-chemicals-are-used
Consider THE FACT that the Northern Pacific Ocean is dying (and it ain't because of 'warmer waters'). Only FOUR nuclear plants and their susequent detonations and full melt-downs have rendered the Pacific basically uninhabitable for ALL sea life.
Perhaps the frackers could build a nuclear plant in the Mojave Desert, to generate power to desalinate the pacific water so that Kalifornicators can once again flush their toilets (just don't say anything about the radiation, and increase the 'acceptable levels of consumption', OFFICIALLY. Don't worry if the bowl glows in the dark, either. If you notice a glow in your urine or feces, however, immediately report this to your local E.P.A./D.H.S. offal).

13 quarts of water for a tomato? Is it a Monsanto GMO tomato, or an 'heirloom' one (which they are working to OUTLAW)?
How many 'litres' of water does it take to produce a human, and sustain it's live throughout it's average life expectancy? Gee, looking at the food chart, it looks like WATER is the ESSENTIAL ELEMENT of LIFE (don't you think)?
Here; let me put some Triethanolamine Zirconate and some Boric Acid and some Ethylene Glycol and some Hydrotreated Light Petroleum Distillate into the 16,000 'litres' of water for an added tangy flavor in that 'one kilogram' steak.
Oh, by the way: that 'fresh water' in the icebergs (not '-burgs') in the Northern Oceans is being IRRADIATED.
THIS is PURE SPECULATION:
IF 2 million gallons PER DAY of water is being used for the purpose of Hydraulic Fracturing PER DAY in California, and IF some of these chemicals render the water unpotable at,say, 5 parts per BILLION, and IF 100% of this water was to be 're-injected' into the water tables from which they came, and IF some of these pollutants could not be removed (as the technology and/or the cost-profit balance were not conducive/available): THEN, 6 HUNDRED QUADRILLION GALLONS of water (that is 600,000,000,000,000 gallons; or 22 QUINTILLION, 800 QUADRILLION 'litres' (give or take) PER DAY would be rendered 'unfit for human consumption'.
I guess that the full realm of possibilities is UNPOSSIBLE to comprehend.

GEE WHIZ! The staties at CAL-EPA FINALLY announced that 'SOME' of the air/other pollution in California is coming from the foundries in, gasp, CHINA! 30 fucking years later!
I've developed a terrible cough. Can you run to the store and get me some Ricolas, honey? I've got a deadline to meet in the marketing ad campaign... lets see... 'SWITZERLAND: The safest place to stash Nazi gold'... NO! 'SWITZERLAND: Officially neutral in European wars for over 300 years'... NO! 'SWITZERLAND: Where your money is saved and held, no questions asked'... FUCK NO! Hurry up with those cough drops, honey. My words are beginning to choke in my throat... I've got to flesh out this new idea...
That's IT! 'Switzerland: The safe, secure home of gold deposits, ever since the California Gold Rush of 1853!'
(cough, cough) Get me a Perrier Water, as well, honey child. My throat is SO DRY... Do you know when they got done building the Panama Canal, by the way?
As long as I can get imported beer, I'm well lubricated.
I'm guessing with all the Chinese smog fumigating Californee crops and Fuki radiation raining down on their soil ... perhaps Cali veggies are not that "organic" afterall?
Banish the thought!

Frankly I think potato crisps are the least of our problems. How about growing rice in an arid environment? Or say, alfalfa? Or the 35 million dollar Dublin water park? Sometimes I think we have reached peak stupid when I am shocked to see there is even a lower level we can stoop.
And to think, twenty years ago I was proud to be a resident of this state. We have been over run by illegals and Ivy tower intellectuals.

“If we don’t take it out of our ground, we’ll take it out of someone else’s,” Brown said.
Fuck that, take it out of the ground in a state with lots of water.
Each fracking well takes about 800,000 to a million gallons of fresh water per year. Once the chemicals are added, the water can never be reclaimed, and is usually injected somewhere where it contminates the local water supply, destroying as much water or more, not to mention the effects on the local economy and population health.
But don't expect Gov. Moonbeam or his sister at Goldman-Sachs to give a shit about that.
yeah --thats about one and a half olympic swimming pools full of clorine--- and don't for get the life guard--

Don't tell this the Mises sheep, which believe that god market and individual greed solves problems!
You are seeing the wolves in sheep's clothing.
Avarice and greed are an anathema to God's plans, but a diligent and faithful servant to his Master deserves duly-earned rewards. Most people are perishing due to a lack of knowledge and wisdom (and are too lazy to expand their horizons of the possibilities).
Ludwig Von Mises was a human being; and hence subject to all the same weaknesses as all of God's created beings. People, however, look to guidance from other people; instead of the correct paths; and can be deluded easily. Von Mises had a lot of really GOOD thoughts and ideas, however.
Tell everyone your opinion of Muhatma Ghandi and HIS ideas, as a backdrop of your formulation of personal opinion. When the British Empire dictated the disarmament of the Indian population, he was arrested and subjected to decade of 'prison time' for speaking out against this 'policy'. Is it your opinion that Gold and Silver should NOT be used as legal tender, in payment of debt; and that USURY is validated due to the greed of the unquenched avarice of those that love MAMMON more than they love their fellow man (and God Himself)? Are people who have this SAME IDEA 'sheep' to be slaughtered, as you espouse? This idea didn't work out too well for The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Cartel (The Indian people silently, forcefully expelled these ILK, in case you didn't notice).
Oh, well. I suppose you upvoted yourself. What does the MSM label this as? A 'selfie'?

They baffle em with Bullsh*t as they say. The average person, as a practical matter, has ZERO chance of being able to sort through all of the distractions in what passes for “court opinions”. Even the vast majority of lawyers MISS THE PLOT most of the time and get pulled off into paths that lead nowhere."
Once upon a time, Latin was used exclusively by the Roman CC. Although a dead language in practical terms, it was used by the Church to maintain their exclusivity. The ordinary peons needed clergy to translate for them when speaking to God.
Today, "law speak" is used for a very similar reason.
Worse. Unlike others, I've always conserved water and there is no where for me to cut without extreme hardship (no showers at all?). Will I now be penalized for failing to reduce by 25%?
I'm in the same boat (no pun intended)
They are clueless and just knee-jerking all over the place.
They need to set up a sliding scale where people who use minimal water get it for a very cheap price. But the price escaletes rapidly as it crosses various thresholds. They also can't just set usage levels by household. The family of 6 can't be stuck with the same amount of water as the old geezer living alone.
But all that would take some work, some effort and some thought. Far easier to just decree a 25% cut for everybody.
God market solves problems for many ZHers!
But you are calling for regulations and a strong state enforcing it! You are a communist and an enemy of individual freedom and entrepreneurship!
/s
Dude, dumping toxic chemicals into the aquifer / the ground water, is a crime. Other than that, some better questions to address is why is there a drought? Who does it belong to? The water that is. And where does California water go and why?
Thanks.
You just don't understand neoliberalism and that market solves problems. Your socialist behaviour is contrary to the religion, that individual greed and egoism is the solver of problems...
Between the lines I read, that you demand more regulations against water wasting. You are an enemy of individual freedom!
/s
Its pretty well known that Capitalism has a problem with the tragedy-of-the-commons. Ok, you made your point. Now what?
+1
Agree, GF and I cut water use in East Bay last year by 60 % plus from using shower water to flush toilet, letting all greenery go brown etc...
There is nothing left to cut and as water use goes down water costs go up. Of the 12 houses on our street, easily half of them still out front everyday watering their yards.
They need a billion dollar train to offset this drought, that should work pretty good and there is skittle farming and free dope and all so I'm pretty optimistic about the shortage of burrito coverings.
The average Cali golf course uses one million gallons/day in watering.
The 125 courses in Palm Springs use significantly more.
There are well over one thousand golf courses in the state.
Here's some math:
"A typical golf course requires 100,000 to 1,000,000 gallons (378.5 m3 to 3,785 m3) of water per week in summer to maintain healthy vegetation."
http://www.allianceforwaterefficiency.org/golf_course.aspx
You might be talking about this course:
"Set in the desert of Dubai, the Tiger Woods Golf Course uses 4 million gallons of water every day to maintain its lush appearance."

So when does brwon beg for a fed bailout?
What pisses me off is when they do 'feel good' publicity stunts like telling restaurants not to serve drinking water unless asked. All the water that 35 million californians drink in all the restaurants in the state doesn't add up to 1/10th of the water use of just one single mega corporate farm out in the central valley.
The shit that really needs to get done like ordering farms to convert to drip irrigation for every crop that can support it and letting golf courses and school fields go brown and covering exposed irrigation channels won't get addressed because it would step on politically powerful toes.
We should let in another 100,000,000 immigrants to help consume what little water is left.
DHS/ICE is on it, SOZ. Thanks for the tip.
I agree. Exactly. They deserve who and what they voted for--fucking morons.
Maybe there's drugs in the water?
I don't think 2,000,000 gallons* will fill up very many olympic sized pools so somebody is trying to provoke somebody else.
*that's the estimate cited for oil drilling
actually its three and a half--
Hell, Bill Gates (in his palatial mansion) causes this much use when he asks his bitches to douche before approaching his so-called 'manhood' (thus eclipsing both Larry Flynt and Hugh Hefner in the 'personal water demands' column).
OF COURSE, it takes MUCH MORE water to anally douche.
Strange, though. His penis isn't really that 'large'. Most of his so-called partners have descibed it as 'small', in fact. In a recent interview, Melinda kept holding up her pinkie finger, while describing her huband's ideas about 'geoengineering'. The bigger the checkbook, the bigger the DICKLOOK... (sage advice, for ZH'ers who haven't been laid recently).
Melinda WANTED to say 'Actually, it's only three and a half', but was pre-empted by Bill's handlers.
'WITHOUT CHEMICALS, LIFE ITSELF WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE'.
(This message brought to you by your friends at J. Paul Getty)
I gotta get me a 'nerd-pack'. I've already bought a roll of 3-M maskng tape to hold my glasses together!
The funny thing about Getty, and it is too bad about anybody's tragic life, is ... he had all that money. Money's a lot like booze. In reality, it really doesn't help.
Anyhow, about poor Getty, there's a lesson for us all in there somewhere.
2,000,000 gallons is 45 acre-feet/day. if this was converted to a flow measurement it would equal 22.7 cubic feet per second over a 24 hr period. Today, April 3, the Merced River flows at 260 cfs. so yes, 2,000,000 gallons is in the noise. But still, NO-ONE should be exempt. Fracking frackers, and their mother-fracking frack-fracks.
Or, we could give farmers the option of switching to more drought tolerant crops and let the market work things out. But part of that might involve them growing less produce and more of it being grown in other areas. Sometimes even locally. But that would be bad for big ag, so it isn't going to happen until there is no other choice.
Do you really think that a government solution to this is going to work?
You mean growing rice in the 'paddies' between Sacramento and the Bay is a waste of water resources? Say it ain't so!
Vaquero, had to up vote your post for the sarcasm of your last sentence. Starting to look like they don't want to fix anything.
Good point. Sure, it's "in the noise". But it sends the wrong message. It lets us know that the pain of the drought will be borne by residential users while powerful corporate interests will get a pass.
Farmers won't get a pass, unless they have enough $$ to be "important." They're the biggest users. But people want to argue about "fairness" instead of looking at where the biggest parts of the actual problem actually lies.
Totally true amigo. Nobody should get a pass for poisoning the water, but other than that, this is a well aimed distraction from bigger issues.
McCormick, one acre foot is 326,000 gallons.
2,000,000 gallons is 6 acre feet ... which is what a Cali golf course uses every two days.
Generally, I agree with you Vac, as is 2 million gallons is noise, but it is NOT 'getting panties in a vise over nothing', it is about fairness (or the perception of same). I'm a countrty boy, and I am very concious of my water use, and always have been, but for city folks to cut their showers to 2 minutes, or not water their lawns is kind of hipocridtical when fracking is exempt, and the central valley corporatle 'farmers' are central pivot irrigating in the fucking middle of a 100 degree plus day in the middle of summer - I've seen this driving down I5. WTF??!!!?
The deal is: EVERY FUCKING BODY has got to start serious conservation, ESPECIALLY the former 'untouchable' central valley farmers and oil industries and anybody else that can buy enough politicans to get themselves exempt.
I agree with you too Nobody because of this -
##The deal is: EVERYBODY has got to start getting serious about what's going on, ESPECIALLY with the former 'untouchable's. I wrote some questions up thread. Like why is there a drought?
Your point is well taken, in 2010 it was estimated, by USGS, that California used 38 Billion gallons a day. However I think a point could be made that either we're all in this together or it's every man for himself. My feeling is that we all have a responsibilty to do what we can. I know that my familes per capita usage is 30 gallons per day, (average in my locale is 50 or so) and I'm looking for ways to cut back. As this wears on, and patience wears thin, everyone will look for their favorite whipping boy. Times like this will test the true mettle of citizens, and the true nature of our society. If folks opt to leave SoCal, and I fear it may come to that, I hope they stay South of Redding. :)
If fracking use of millions of gallons per day is a "drop in the bucket" then what do you call my daily usage, that must now be cut 25%?
The 25% cut should be across the board. Agriculture uses 80% of California's water. Maybe we should stop growing fucking rice in man made rice paddies in the middle of the fucking desert. Just a suggestion.
Circle jerking is a major component of GDP.

Now that you associated that word with circle jerk, it no longer seems like businesses are using it in a gobbledygook fashion. Thanks for clearing that up for me!
The biggest factor I have not heard one person, or politico address is the issue with immigration. Calculate the numbers, approx 100 gallons of water per day starts to add up, along with infrastructure costs, energy, etc.

Honestly though, not many people have died so far. Japan / Honshu has not been evacuated. How does this progress to extinction? It just occured to me that with the aquifer depleting, must be / could be harder to contain that stuff?

don't worry, Cali. the entire industry will be out of business in your state soon.
It's what plants crave!
I call bullshit on the fact that only 2 Million gallons of water are used each day. I'm guessing it's a helluva lot more than that. See this. And this article is about two years old so the data is no doubt understated.
So doesn't it make more sense to save the water (which a body needs to survive) and TAKE the oil from someone else? (import) during this season of drought?
Why are politcians so stupid and stupid extends to BOTH parties!
Politicians are stupid because they reflect the californian electorate.
I lived in LA once, what a shithole, west coast so cal is all hype. San Francisco is pretty nice, and has better food...
LA restuarants are much better than SF restaurants. Generally speaking, San Francisco is just about the most overrated city on earth. LA has deteriorated substantially over the last few decades, but SF has been a shithole since forever.
frisco is the epicenter of liberal douchery of the planet. its amazing what one week of liberal arts studies will do. fucking hippie drum circles man. ive seen some things- and some stuff.
SF had some outstanding punk clubs in the '70's. And the Hooker's Ball? WOW!
The Central Coast and NorCal countryside has SoCal beat hands down, but the way things are going it all may be moot. Guess every Depression has to have it's Dust Bowl somewhere.
I hated the weather in San Francisco. Always a bit cold and cloudy.
I agree that LA has the better restaurants. Won't comment on the shithole part of your post other than to say there's certainly a lot of shit on the streets with the homeless and crazies here.
Bay area guy, I drove around the Tenderloin area of San Fran for several hours just this morning (considered the seediest/tawdriest part of town).
To those familiar with the city and area, it is somewhat shocking to witness the speed and extent of the downward human spiral these past couple of years.
All over the downtown area, including the relatively small financial area, armies (quite literally numbering in the hundreds) of homeless sleep sprawled out across all the sidewalks.
Come 7:00 AM or so, the limited number of poleese start to roust the sleeping to move on and not be underfoot of the arriving commuters/workers.
The amount of human excrement all over the sidewalks on small side streets is going exponential.
Once again, the size and speed of these developments is what I find particularly noteworthy as the past few decades were minor compared to today.
Just wait...
Long Galoshes.
I guess ignoring the homeless and trash must be an aquired talent...I find SF to be about as disgusting city as I have been in.
That Pelosi keeps getting reelected tells you everything you need to know about how contemptible San Francisco is.
SF used to always re-elect that evil Tom Lantos, which always seemed strange to me.
That's compassionate liberalism where you give your mugger/killer food stamps and a lecture on tolerance before thay shoot you.
Hey Vent, ever been in New York?
At least they don’t discriminate in Chicago.. affirmative action shootings have way more blacks than others receiving the lead.
Of course they are distributing the lead way more than others, too.
And 3-4 strains of HIV
Politicians act stupid because most people are dumb enough to fall for their dumb act. It's all just an honest "mistake".
That way things are going, California will be a desert within a year anyway. So it makes no difference who gets the water now.
keep it up and brazil will be a fuckin rainforest
“way things are going, California will be a desert within a year anyway.”
Either that or considering we are trying so hard to start a war with Russia, that a couple of Tsar Bomba’s on the fault line could make a chunk of the West Coast a better reef than McCain’s Oriskany.
Anyone notice that Sao Paolo ran out of water last month?
Time for us to face the facts - there's too damn many of us
I disagree with that. Every living human being standing side by side can fit inside the city of Jacksonville. There is plenty of room and the crust is full of untapped resources. GOD has forseen and provided for all in abundance.
Time for you to stop living in fear.
Time for you to learn the exponential function. In 700 years, at the current population growth rate, there will be 1 person on every square meter of the earth. Sounds like fun.

GOD is aware of it and has planned accordingly. That's all you need to know.
She does love her Mass Extinctions.
In number six right now. No Secret.
Keep Calm, Carry Capacity is on.
like Donkey Kong.
There was only one and it was called the Global Flood 4350 years ago. The others claimed are based on conjecture and opinion, with no hard science behind them.
Fukushima - and the many more to follow across the globe soon - guarantee there will be no life left in 100 years.
Enenews
I'll take you up on your stupid fucking bet.
Keep an eye on your and your famiy's white blood cell count, Bumbu. It's going to be going down.
Reducing groundwater hydraulic (static) pressure, then "lubricating" minor fissures via hydraulic fracturing? Seems the "right recipe" for increasing quake risk, in an already quake-prone area. http://sfpublicpress.org/news/2014-05/groundwater-depletion-is-destabilizing-the-san-andreas-fault-and-increasing-earthquake-risk
You don't need Russian nuclear assistance - the Californian Government is doing the job just fine . . . . .
"That way things are going, California will be a desert within a year..."
More acurately, BACK to being a desert. Most of California is a desert, made livable and green by pirating water from other areas.
Exactly.
All politicians at the federal level are millionaires – including Ron Paul.
To think any of them will toss their cash to help the constituents is laughable.
Ron Paul is a millionaire because he invested in precious metals starting in the 1980's.
