When Iran "Deal" Falls Apart, The Pentagon Is Ready: America's Most Destructive "Bunker Buster" Gets An Upgrade

Tyler Durden's picture

Two weeks ago we noticed something quite "persuasive": ahead of the culmination of the March 31 April 2 Iran nuclear negotiations, the US had dispatched a huge naval presence to the Persian Gulf as part of "Eagle Resolve" a military exercise held in plain view of the Iranian coastline. The massive operation would consist of tactical exercises from the US Army, Marines, and various other military branches "with simulated portions of the exercise based on a fictional adversary." Just in case the intention of this wargame was not clear, a CENTCOM official was quick to point out that "the exercise is not intended as a signal to Iran." Iran quickly got the "non-signal" message and a few days later agreed to a preemptive agreement with John Kerry which has since been revealed, is anything but a "nuclear deal."

So as the world awaits the outcome of next Iran "deadline"- the June 30 conclusion of the finalization of the Iran deal - the US is already hedging its bets. According to the WSJ, the Pentagon has "upgraded and tested the largest bunker-buster bomb in the U.S. arsenal, senior U.S. officials said, readying a weapon that could destroy or disable Iran’s most heavily fortified nuclear facilities should a nuclear deal fall apart and the White House decide to take military action."

It turns out as the Nobel peace prize winner and his henchmen were talking peace, the Pentagon is actively preparing for war:

Even while the Obama administration was pursuing a diplomatic agreement with Iran to rein in its nuclear program, the Pentagon was readying the improvements to one of its most destructive conventional weapons, including electronic countermeasures to prevent an adversary from jamming its guidance systems.

“The Pentagon continues to be focused on being able to provide military options for Iran if needed,” a senior U.S. official said. “We have not taken our eyes off the ball.”

As noted previously, U.S. officials are unsure whether the terms of a final accord can be reached before a June 30 deadline. "Officials said major gaps remained over the technical details as well as implementation, and it is unclear if the U.S. Congress will pass legislation challenging the White House’s terms."

So, just to make sure there is no negotiating stumbling blocks on behalf of Tehran, the US is doing its best to "negotiate" with a gun to Iran's head. Or, as the case may be, a Massive Ordnance Penetrator, aka MOP.

A brief history of the GBU-57:

This is what the GBU-57 MOP looks like to scale:

Here is the MOP locked and loaded:

How the MOP is said to work:

Back in 2012, the WSJ reported that the previous iteration of the 30,000-pound (13,607 kg) bunker buster wasn’t powerful enough to destroy some fortified Iranian nuclear facilities. So work began to upgrade the bomb’s design and guidance systems. That upgrade is now complete.

The Pentagon declined to comment on any improvements to the so-called Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP.

“The United States military prepares for a broad range of potential threats to include developing munitions designed to address deeply buried and hardened facilities,” said Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman.

The redesigned bunker-buster is clearly intended to be unleashed on Iran's mountainous research facilities in a worst case scenario:

The Pentagon designed the bunker buster with heavily fortified sites—including Iran’s Fordow installation—in mind. Fordow is built into a mountain to protect the facility from U.S. or Israeli airstrikes.

To destroy or disable the underground facilities, the Pentagon envisages guiding two or more of the bunker busters to the same impact point, in sequence, extending the weapon’s burrowing power, the officials said.

The MOP is so strong, the WSJ compares its destructive force to a nuclear weapon:

Those upgraded electronic countermeasures, combined with improvements to the weapon’s guidance systems, will allow the weapon to be targeted with a precision previously possible only for far smaller guided bombs in the U.S. arsenal, the officials said. Steering two or more massive ordnance penetrators to a single entry point would have a devastating effect never before seen by a nonnuclear weapon, the officials said.

The White House has repeatedly said that Mr. Obama will need to look at other options if the nuclear talks break down. “If you say all options are on the table, you have to have something on the table that’s credible,” a senior U.S. official said.

What remains unknown is whether Israel is also in possession of the MOP, because while theatrical politics at the top echelons of power suggest a breakdown in US-Israel relations, it is behind the scenes where the real action takes place:

The U.S. has balked at providing its biggest bunker buster bomb to Israel, but Pentagon officials have shared details about its capabilities with their Israeli counterparts, and has shown them videos of the weapon hitting a target during testing.

In one of those videos, which was described by U.S. officials who have viewed it, a massive ordnance penetrator is seen dropping in slow motion toward a large “X” marking the target at an undisclosed test site.

The video then cuts to an image showing an underground bunker buried beneath the “X” and depicts the site’s destruction.

In other words, US officials are just waiting for the right Israeli offer.

As for the question whether the MOP will be actually used, which is basically a question whether the Iran "deal" will fall apart over the next three months, ask Boeing - the maker of the GBU-57 MOP - which stands to benefit (or lose) the most from any war (or lack thereof) with Iran.

And just to make sure the outcome is one in which the most blood is shed...

Cool. Tell me again why we have to go to war with Iran if the nuclear deal doesn't happen.

Because of the proposed Arab Pipeline running from the N. Pars field, across Iran, Iraq and Syria to the Med, and ultimately, Europe.

This directly competes with another proposed piple running from Qatar, across Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria to the Med, and ultimately, Europe.

Hundreds of billions (if not a few trillion) in revenue hang in the balance.

What benefit is there to American tax payers to go to war so Arabs can sell energy to Europe?

Can't the EU $18T economy carry its own water?

What am I missing?

This is like good cop / bad cop.   Eventually Israel will bitch slap the Iranians.   And the US will pretend to be shocked.

It was specifically designed to fit in the internal forward and aft weapons bay of a B-2 (two can be carried at once). There was an integration program for the B-52 (also carried in the intenal weapons bay), but in practice the AF is not going to waste a B-52 to deliver this on a heavily-defended target. Anything anyone buries that deep is going to have plenty of air defense capability - A B-52 would be shot down before or after it delivered the MOP.

The much smaller, less-capable GBU-28 'Bunker Busters' used in Iraq are not nearly the size of a MOP and be carried by all modern fighter-bombers. We have thousands and have given several hundred to Israel already - they love to use them in Gaza school children. Israel has no aircraft capable of carrying the MOP, hence their call last year for the U.S. to sell (=give) them a B-2 or a couple of B-52s and 'pre-stage' a few MOPs in Israel. The idea was to bomb Fordow this spring while the U.S. reacted with mock surprise and a strongly-worded protest. The scheme never took hold for some unknown reason despite AIPAC's whining.

The only concievable target for a MOP, courtesy of the U.S. taxpayers, is Iran's Fordow enrichment facility. It's impractical for any other purpose besides going up against undefended targets (schools, old-age homes in Gaza or Syria, for instance). In other words, the two-billion plus Divine Strake advanced nuclear penetrator program never had any practical use for the U.S. - it has been designed and developed solely for Israel's paranoid obsession with destroying Iran's Fordow and enabling Israel's Final Solution for all Persians.

The Divine Strake program was renamed several times by the DoD (RNEP, DSHTW, ACTD, MOP, etc.) but it is still very much the old nuclear penetrator. A conventional GBU-57 is just stupid and hardly worth the effort. It has always been planned as a nuclear penetrator. The GBU-57 described in the article for sheeple consumption today - its unclassified configuration - is advertised as an advanced penetrator with three tons of conventional explosives. In practice, the warhead's conventional explosives are easily replaceable with the physics package of the 'main' air-dropped nuclear weapon in the U.S. inventory: the B-61 mod 11. Since the U.S. probably has B-61s pre-positioned in Israel as part of the strategic reserve, we can presume that Israel has or can easily steal a B-61 core and create a 300 kTon nuclear GBU-57 at will.

With a massive enough air attack up front, the Israelis could almost completely degrade the air defenses of Fordow and drop a nuclear GBU-57 out the back of one of the C-130J's we just sold (er, gave...) them along with the KC-135 refuelers. That would also require the destruction of Syrian Southern and Northern air defenses and radar (done) and control of northern Iraq (between ISIS and the Kurds: done).

Israel WILL bomb Fordow. It's not a matter of IF but WHEN. It WILL be done with a nuclear-tipped GBU-57 (courtesy U.S. taxpayers) and U.S. citizens won't have a damn word to say about it. Why? Because nobody works for you in Washington D.C. - same as always.

In the name of God...

The everloving destroyer, and the terminator of life is come to us ALL.

Flying out of Diego Garcia, these munition-carrying B1-Bs and 'stealth arircaft' seek to rule the skies, and the ground below them. In the wet dreams of all Nazis before them, they carry munitions capable of penetrating to a depth of 200 feet (the rule is 9 divided by five plus a few for meters, or 5/9nths minus a few for feet).

Somewhere in the Indian ocean, these 'keepers of Democracy' will watch as their fleets of ships become non-existent. Seeking a safe haven, they will eject these munitions and turn tail for their base; only to realize that they were being tracked and watched at the last moments before their runways are dissolved in front of them; seconds remaining to their final destiny...

The destruction will be the same, on both sides. The death toll rises to 2 billion eight hundred million; and the 'peacekeepers' and 'technocrats' sit stunned, watching while the entire world burns.

Meanwhile, in the 'Bat-Cave', 'Lost Word' is still seaching 'on the internet' for pics of 'the bomb' INSIDE of 'the bomb bay of the bomber'. Staring at a darkened screen, he wonders when the 'internet connection' will 'refresh', as BILLIONS DIE.

These are for show.  When Israel hauled off and bombed Saddams Osirak's Reactor in 1981 Iran noted.

And they put their centrifuges down close to a kilometer in the ground.  Something that will only penetrate 200 ft of dirt might take out 25 feet of rock, these simply will not do the job.

Iran will 'stretch the cheese' and 'stretch the time' by arguing minuta, playing dumb, requesting further clarification etc to buy a few more weeks and months, and when this battle really does finally take place it will be something more akin to a GBU-38S or something but I cannot remember  with an advanced boring warhead capable of a fusion drill penetrating a directed nuclear explosion.  I feel sorry for the tech's that have to build the circuit boards for these things because it has to withstand like 800G shocks when the warhead has to punch down into the ground 100 feet before the circuitry initiates the nuclear detonation, otherwise it will splash out all over the ground and just not penetrate.

Israeli Intelligence (Mossad) seems to have this inability to hide their real intentions via the propaganda they write over at Debka.com time to go read if they are going to false flag America just to fk over Obama for Bibi's interests and force America to nuke Iran right and proper..

The first dead give away is when I looked at that picture and saw the shopping cart wheels underneath it good for maybe 300 lbs a wheel -  I was like no way - that 'bomb' is a nice hollow propaganda piece. A MOAB weighs as much as a semi-truck load do you see semi-trucks hauling 30,000 lb loads on shopping cart wheels?

Here is a good piece on it : https://nationalpostcom.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/fo0311_massiveordnan...

Iran is using the "Muhammed Ali" float like a butterfly, sting like a bee tactic, a.k.a. "rope a dope".

They have done this before, and are masters. Remember that chess was likely invented in Iran (Sassanid Persia).

MOABs are overrated. The same techniques that can be applied to tank armor can be applied to MOABs, e.g. the principles of reactive armor can equally well be applied to mountain tops. It sufflces to put charges on the mountain top which go off when the MOAB strikes, but before it detonates - this will tend to counteract the MOAB effect, and either prematurely detonate the MOAB or cause it to deviate from its track. The surface charges don't even have to be that powerfull  to show an effect.

The Russian, masters at tank warfare, have probably already figured this out and passed it on to the Iranis...

As if Israel is the reason for all ills of the world and Iran is just trying to be fair ? If so why do they keep saying death to America and we will wipe out Israel ? No. Scratch a terrorist group hard enough and you'll find thugs bought and paid for by Wall Street. That includes every communist group you've ever heard of. Kahane was a Jewish patriot who got no financial or other support save from other Jewish patriots. The banksters were terrified of him. That's why he had to die.

Listen. Israel will get her land back---all of it, from the Nile to the Tigris---and the Amalekites and other sandniggers will be cleared off or put down like the dogs they are if they have a problem with that. And if they have the sense God gave granite the banksters will shut up and leave Israel to do in the Middle East whatever she thinks best, because she is done explaining herself to them.

If they won't give her her land back, Israel will instead settle for revenge. And what terrible revenge it will be.

The USA is involved because securing the construction of the Qatar-Saudi-Iraq-Syria pipeline also assures
strategic access to the product it carries a decade or two down the line.

This will come, in part, because it will be U.S. corporations who play a significant role in construction and
operation of the pipeline, not to mention of the fields themselves. Assure friendly governments are in place,
with U.S. corporations playing a significant role in the recovery and delivery of the product.....

Most of the major oil and gas fields in the world have already been located. The requisite geologic structures
are fairly easy to identify. Now it is just a long term process of securing access to those supplies ahead of
China and Russia tying them up.

In the end, it is all a long term strategic play at securing access to an increasingly limited supply of product
for decades to come.

This is part of the reason why China is becoming increasingly brazen in their activities within the S. China Sea,
such as their recent claim that most of the area constitutes their territorial waters despite the fact their claim
violates the territorial claims of Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei, Philippines, and Taiwan.

The long range neocon plan starting with ousting Sadaam was to take down Syria, Lebanon and Iran.  Iran was always the big prize, and they had to take down her allies first.  9/11 was just the pretext for starting with Iraq.

The only way this stops is if Iran gets nukes first.  Then they will be left alone, like N Korea.  I fail to understand the drama, though.  They should be able to buy a few nukes from Pakistan, N Korea, Russia or China.  Why is it taking so long?

Times have definitely changed. When Israel bombed Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981, Reagan backed a UN resolution condemning Israel. Absolutely unthinkable today. It would never happen. We just had the leader of Israel address congress and insult our (admittedly retarded) president in front of the entire world.

Criminal progressive neo stalinists (obirdbrain and his regime) have to break the law to take power like that. Admittedly, they have been breaking the law for awhile now but I can guarantee you if obirdbrain decides to declare himself dictator he had better be ready to kill the millions of American citizens who would have the legal right to invoke rule .308 and would do so.

It does not matter how much obirdbrain purges the military ranks (a la Stalin) and installs his brown shirts, there are still many who "will not obey that order" to kill law abiding American citizens. The blow back to obama's illegal actions will be massive. The progressive criminal tyrants, and those who support them, their banker buddies (corzines) and all their drones in the media, hollyweird, and all other marxist/progressive institutions would be fucked if they decide to go that route.  But---knowing that---progressive psychopath criminals are really that stupid and I believe they will try.

Wake up. The whole "micro-nukes" meme is an attempt by TPTB and the Anglo-Zionist empire to frame any questioning of 9/11 as something absurd.

"Micro Nukes" were NOT NECESSARY to blow the WTC1,2 & WTC7. Thermite will do just fine. The "micronuke" idea is pure misdirection so that when people reject the Mossad  "micronuke" concept, they will throw the baby out with the bathwater and at the same time reject that 9/11 was carried out by the Mossad and the Anglo Zionists.

When you repeat the "micronuke" lie, you are just helping the instigators of 9/11.

If you read Wikipedia, isotope Colbalt 60 is very radioactive, and dangerous to anyone unshielded, too dangerous to put into any unshielded facility, or for the bomb maker to put into a conventional dirty bomb.

However, a Cobalt dirty nuclear bomb, the theoretical so-called Doomsday weapon, would contain Colbalt only in the form of Colbalt 59, which is much less radioactive, until the uranium or plutonium nuclear trigger explosion converts the Colbalt 59 into the much more radioactive and dangerous isotope Colbalt 60.

The radiation from isotope Colbalt 60 is more intense and longer lasting than from the usual metals found in uranium or plutonium bombs, rendering the nuclear fallout area uninhabitable for many decades.

The performance is likely overstated for propaganda reasons, and also because there is no way to verify/disprove it outside a leaked report. A more effective technique that is rarely mentioned is simultaneous detonations which can intersect for much higher over pressure that can reach deeper. The tail air brakes could be used to coordinate the timing.

15 metres is possible, but much more is unlikely.Concrete is strong in compression.

Compression strength and impact strength are two different regimes. When shockwaves are involved, things get interesting. Consider that a Hilti or Ramset powder-actuated tool can drive a hardened nail into concrete to a depth of one inch with a .22 caliber cartridge. When it comes to concrete in the real world, not everybody pours it and vibrates it properly.

There is absolutely no reason you can't use the same principle in defending a mountain top. A counterexplosion set off by a MOAB strike will blow the MOAB out from the point of impact, neutralizing much of its effectiveness.

If the P5+1 negotiate until late June, the agreement may be moot.  The Iranians could test a bomb and say, okay we are now a member of the nuclear club.

Per the framework, the breakout time is only 2-3 months away.

This statement is a non sense with no ground in reality. It might have charm as a plot line for a Johnny Quest cartoon though. Ever consider a career in scriptwriting?

If the P5+1 negotiate until late June, the agreement may be moot.  The Iranians could test a bomb and say, okay we are now a member of the nuclear club.

This displays the unique 'american' knack for constructing layers of fantasy. The fantasy foundation, the very bedrock, is the imaginary Iranian nuclear weapon program. Never any evidence that such a program exists, but who cares? Call for evidences is just an opportunity for US citizens to display their fantaisist leaning: facts are only facts when US citizens believe them to be facts.

Next fantasy layer is the Johnny Quest "Breakout" episode. Neglects to mention that it is not possible for the 'breakout time' countdown timer to start unless Iran first withdraws from the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty and then expels all IAEA inspectors. Somehow I don't believe that would go unnoticed.

Russia put its missiles in Cuba after NATO put missiles in Turkey .. quid pro quo .. personally I think few understand just how much things have changed since the 60s .. when an entire generation of leaders had experienced World War II and Korea .. total war is a hell of a lot different than contained rgional war . the lunatics today think they can contain it .. they are in for a BIG surprise.    History of October CMC... American missiles located in Turkey could strike almost anywhere in the Soviet Union. Khrushchev feared that the imbalance would tempt the U.S. to launch a first strike.. ergo he put the missiles in Cuba . reember the election of 1960 was primarily about the US being behind RUssia in missile capability ... but in the end .. common sense reigned.. there is none today.

That is why Russia (trojan) helped negotiate away Iran's spent fuel materials and other materials.  Just like Russia did to Iraq and to Syria key weapons.  Under the pretense of being opposed to the forces intent to destroy those countries Russia negotiated away what worried the US/Israel the most and then refused to assist those people when the bombs started falling again.  Remember, Russia twice stopped the EUke's and forced them to accept a ceasefire and to allow the WUke's to withdraw safely just when the EUke's had large forces of WUke's trapped and were prepared to deal fatal blows.

Damn, Putin even cancelled a fully executed contract to sell modern missiles to Iran and Syria.  To keep them vulnerable to the attacks.

If Iran was so stupid not to see this then they helped bring it upon themselves.

Suppose Iran is not so stupid to not see this and are fully aware.  What options do they really have besides extend and pretend?

Although China also voted for the initial sanctions the history of Russia and Putin not only voting for the sanctions against Iran but facilitating the destruction of Iraq and Syria -  combined with China moving up and Russia moving downward should have signaled the need to move towards China long ago.  The request should have been for China to supply missiles, not Russia.  While Russia has naval capabilities it could provide Iran, Russia has not and will not utilize it.

When Israel was murdering Irans scientist Iran should have responded in kind.  Since when has "taking it" helped anyone being targeted by Israel/US?

Iran should have used the spent fuel as a deterent.  They should have announced it had been weaponized in types of sampson options and they were only following the path announced by Israel.  There are creative ways they could have used it.

The US is afraid of chemical weapons.  They kept the US out of Iraq until Russia "helped" Iraq by negotiating them away (so Iraq would not be attacked).  The same thing happened in Syria, the US made issue of chemical weapons, the Putin steps in and negotiates them away, then the fighting gets more intense and the US tried to get support for a direct invasion/total bombing.  Iran should have developed it's own program and weaponized it into missiles and other delivery systems.  If Syria was giving up it's ability in this way Iran should have scooped them up.  (Didn't the same thing happen in Libya, being made vulnerable with Russia help - with the false premise the proxy war would not escalate even further?)

Iran should have pursued in ernest getting antiship missiles and weapons from China.

This agreement will put inspectors/spys into Iran.  This will prevent their ability to develop a better response to hostilities and if the agreement is violated (or the corrupt inspectors claim it was violated) then the full force of the UN/US/NATO can be quickly justified (upon instructions from Israel).

Once targeted no one has escaped by peaceful compromise.  After what seems like a negotiated compromise is reached there are soon new charges and demands for the nation to weaken itself.  Better to keep all weapons and hope it deters rather than a sure death (even if slower).

Russia has never engaged in the defense of any nation it has helped become vulnerable by negotiating away powerful weapons of defense.

So, what 'options' do the Russians and Chinese have in this situation, since actions like this may directly or indirectly affect them in some capacity...?

- Pull the $$$USD rug out?

- Accelerate shipments of S-300 batteries?

- Garrison 'advisors' in key strategic areas?

You know that any direct action by AIPAC-influenced foreign policy of this nature will not go unanswered by Russo-China.

Iran has the right to selfdefence, including nuclear.

Iran should be prevented from having the bomb even it means war.
