When Iran "Deal" Falls Apart, The Pentagon Is Ready: America's Most Destructive "Bunker Buster" Gets An Upgrade

Tyler Durden's picture

Two weeks ago we noticed something quite "persuasive": ahead of the culmination of the March 31 April 2 Iran nuclear negotiations, the US had dispatched a huge naval presence to the Persian Gulf as part of "Eagle Resolve" a military exercise held in plain view of the Iranian coastline. The massive operation would consist of tactical exercises from the US Army, Marines, and various other military branches "with simulated portions of the exercise based on a fictional adversary." Just in case the intention of this wargame was not clear, a CENTCOM official was quick to point out that "the exercise is not intended as a signal to Iran." Iran quickly got the "non-signal" message and a few days later agreed to a preemptive agreement with John Kerry which has since been revealed, is anything but a "nuclear deal."

So as the world awaits the outcome of next Iran "deadline"- the June 30 conclusion of the finalization of the Iran deal - the US is already hedging its bets. According to the WSJ, the Pentagon has "upgraded and tested the largest bunker-buster bomb in the U.S. arsenal, senior U.S. officials said, readying a weapon that could destroy or disable Iran’s most heavily fortified nuclear facilities should a nuclear deal fall apart and the White House decide to take military action."

It turns out as the Nobel peace prize winner and his henchmen were talking peace, the Pentagon is actively preparing for war:

Even while the Obama administration was pursuing a diplomatic agreement with Iran to rein in its nuclear program, the Pentagon was readying the improvements to one of its most destructive conventional weapons, including electronic countermeasures to prevent an adversary from jamming its guidance systems.

“The Pentagon continues to be focused on being able to provide military options for Iran if needed,” a senior U.S. official said. “We have not taken our eyes off the ball.”

As noted previously, U.S. officials are unsure whether the terms of a final accord can be reached before a June 30 deadline. "Officials said major gaps remained over the technical details as well as implementation, and it is unclear if the U.S. Congress will pass legislation challenging the White House’s terms."

So, just to make sure there is no negotiating stumbling blocks on behalf of Tehran, the US is doing its best to "negotiate" with a gun to Iran's head. Or, as the case may be, a Massive Ordnance Penetrator, aka MOP.

A brief history of the GBU-57:

This is what the GBU-57 MOP looks like to scale:

Here is the MOP locked and loaded:

How the MOP is said to work:

Back in 2012, the WSJ reported that the previous iteration of the 30,000-pound (13,607 kg) bunker buster wasn’t powerful enough to destroy some fortified Iranian nuclear facilities. So work began to upgrade the bomb’s design and guidance systems. That upgrade is now complete.

The Pentagon declined to comment on any improvements to the so-called Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP.

“The United States military prepares for a broad range of potential threats to include developing munitions designed to address deeply buried and hardened facilities,” said Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman.

The redesigned bunker-buster is clearly intended to be unleashed on Iran's mountainous research facilities in a worst case scenario:

The Pentagon designed the bunker buster with heavily fortified sites—including Iran’s Fordow installation—in mind. Fordow is built into a mountain to protect the facility from U.S. or Israeli airstrikes.

To destroy or disable the underground facilities, the Pentagon envisages guiding two or more of the bunker busters to the same impact point, in sequence, extending the weapon’s burrowing power, the officials said.

The MOP is so strong, the WSJ compares its destructive force to a nuclear weapon:

Those upgraded electronic countermeasures, combined with improvements to the weapon’s guidance systems, will allow the weapon to be targeted with a precision previously possible only for far smaller guided bombs in the U.S. arsenal, the officials said. Steering two or more massive ordnance penetrators to a single entry point would have a devastating effect never before seen by a nonnuclear weapon, the officials said.

The White House has repeatedly said that Mr. Obama will need to look at other options if the nuclear talks break down. “If you say all options are on the table, you have to have something on the table that’s credible,” a senior U.S. official said.

What remains unknown is whether Israel is also in possession of the MOP, because while theatrical politics at the top echelons of power suggest a breakdown in US-Israel relations, it is behind the scenes where the real action takes place:

The U.S. has balked at providing its biggest bunker buster bomb to Israel, but Pentagon officials have shared details about its capabilities with their Israeli counterparts, and has shown them videos of the weapon hitting a target during testing.

In one of those videos, which was described by U.S. officials who have viewed it, a massive ordnance penetrator is seen dropping in slow motion toward a large “X” marking the target at an undisclosed test site.

The video then cuts to an image showing an underground bunker buried beneath the “X” and depicts the site’s destruction.

In other words, US officials are just waiting for the right Israeli offer.

As for the question whether the MOP will be actually used, which is basically a question whether the Iran "deal" will fall apart over the next three months, ask Boeing - the maker of the GBU-57 MOP - which stands to benefit (or lose) the most from any war (or lack thereof) with Iran.

And just to make sure the outcome is one in which the most blood is shed...

Notice that the bomb penetrated the first layer, and exploded (with a delay timer) after penetrating the second one.

Wonder what would have happened if there had been a 3rd and a 4th barrier, all separated by airspace (to allow for explosive gases to expand and dissipate the energy).

Additionally, I wonder what would happen to the direction of travel, if the barriers were faceted with 60 deg. pyramidal cones on the incoming side. Would they not deflect the missile -- a bit with each barrier?

The point is, if you know what's coming at you, there is always a way to defend against it (via some combination of Deflection and Absorption). I'd start piling such layers on top of current facilities. Fuck the Neocons!

Indeed, a consideration naval men must have. Obama has spoke directly to the iranian people each iranian new year. He will never authorize attack. The israelis are, and know, they are on there own. Saudis may allow crossing the border with airplanes. Samson option is where you take down the house, us will find itself haveing to deal with the war, and then, obama may act.

Russia does not sell top shelf equipment to foreigners. That is why I averred to "monkey models" when referrring to the current Iranian ADA systems. This was the actual Soviet term for the stuff they sold to their Middle Eastern allies and I have no doubt that the practice continues as before.

This is not correct. Russia provided very modern "Kornet" anti-tank missles to the Hezbullah in 2006 and made the Israelis pay dearly for their incursion into Lebanon. Why? Probably for more than one reason, including the very usefull one of finding out how effective the "Kornet" is against modern armor (answer - very effective indeed).

Russia will provide what is needed to advance their own interests.

Yes. You are speaking of a military filled with low-interest draftees manning "monkey-model" Russian hardware and not performing the routine maintenance even to Soviet standards.

Personally, I'd send them from Whiteman to Afghanistan and come in through the back door. The first sign the Iranians will have that something isn't kosher is when their doors get blown off.

This bomb won't stop Iran's nuclear program because Obama will never use it. He'll just keep talking until Iran starts dropping nukes. Naturally, they'll aim for densely-populated East Coast cities packed with Democrats and RINOs. These people can't vote for Obama a third time anyway, so their lives hardly matter.

I'm pretty sure that was for the German-Russian Peace Accord.

And Herr Hilter would have been a global statesman (for rebuilding Germany), before the Nazi expansion into Austria, Sudetenland, Poland...

He should've stopped with Sudetenland, and let Stalin take the Eastern half of Poland. Since the Brits and France would not and could not have reacted to such a move by Stalin, he then could have taken the Western half of Poland. At that point, with precedent having been set (Russia taking part of Poland), no one could have squawked much about the German-Russian divvying up of Poland, or done much about it.

The Brits knew that they'd be toast against Germany, so they made sure that they got Hitler all lathered up about the Russian Bolsheviks, and get him to over-reach with a 2-Front war.

The rest is history: 1. PsyOps won ("By way of Deception..."), 2. Hitler lost it, 3. Germany lost, 4. Zio-Bankers won.

It is absolutely hilarious how many still have not figured out that CIA-Obama is a manchurian and CIA controlled candidate of the neo-cons.

He is playing along in making it look like he is anti Israel, amongst other things, so as to galvanize the neo-con and evangelical Christian sheeple behind the neo-cons and right.

This so-called deal is not real, it's a setup. A setup for the next Zion and Israel supporting 9/11.

When all is said and done the sheeple will be ready to follow a  ham sandwich over a cliff for the right. And it is not about winning the sheeple census, but gaining their unwavering support--their hearts and minds, what little they have.

The banksters need to repay us.

Correct. Obama was chosen by the CIA years before they put him up for president. He was their perfect candidate after the white southern conservative Bush had gotten his approval rating down to around 13%. With Obama on hand, they knew they could put their agent forward and liberals and Bush haters would EAT IT UP! And they did, two terms, war mongering, police state, uncontrolled spying, a war with Russia, threats to attack China, Iran, Syria and others.

Obama is, and was a total CIA tool, they picked him out while he was in college! They do that you know. They find tools when they are in college and groo them for potential use. When Obama was a Community Organizer, every thing her learned about the poor people's movement, were reported right to the CIA.

I could always be wrong about this. But I would put odds, given the evidence and past track record of CIA, I would say 90% chance I am right, 10% I am wrong [ And the official story of Obama is true]!

The Bunker Buster is an admirable weapon, all powerful and signaling that Washington DC enemies have nowhere to hide when the Washington Cabal comes looking for them. The only weak point in the Bunker Buster is that it must arrive on target and be dropped somewhere close enough to glide on down to finish off Washington's hit list of enemies. This means aircraft, our stealth wonders will fly in undetected and unleash death, the only thing worthy of a Washington DC designated enemy.

Iran's only possible defense is to somehow upgrade their anti aircraft missile defenses. Mobile missile launchers, mobile radars [active and passive], mobile computer controlled command centers. These move around when night and weather permit, with decoys looking just like them running about to make the picture fuzzy. By day they are under something somewhere. They only light up their radars or turn on their passive detectors when warned by long range detection systems. The only one's around selling this whole package are the Russians. Iran's future probably hangs on how much of this type of defense they can pursuade Russia to sell. Otherwise, the Bunker Busters will have their day. And Washington cocktail parties will abound with stories of imperial glory.

The end result of a bombing mission if successful (highly unlikely) and if Iran indeed has nuclear fuel (doubtful?) for weapons will be a Reactor meltdown or Fukushima type radiation spill... most sane people consider this a bad thing... essentially humans shitting radioactive guano  in their own nest.

Even the most retarded of neocons should give pause to consider the optics of embarking on this mission. If failure (most likely)  photos of stealth bombers (or their tiny pieces should the bom explode) in the middle of the Iranian desert surrounded by puzzled Iranian goatherders. If successful.. a radioactive plume circling the globe at the same latitude as Bejing (not likely well received) and Los Angeles (sold by the MSM as a good thing).

For anyone who doubts that our president is a duplicitous, conniving, lying sack of shit the. Here you go. 3 YEARS AGO Obama warned against the very thing he is now doing. This was written by Thomas Friedman.

"Obama did this by making clear that allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons and then “containing” it — the way the U.S. contained the Soviet Union — was not a viable option, because if Iran acquires a nuclear bomb, all the states around it would seek to acquire one as well. This would not only lead to a nuclear Middle East, but it would likely prompt other countries to hedge their commitments to the global Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. The global nuclear black market would then come alive and we would see the dawning of a more dangerous world."

However, they keep us this "death to usa and isreel" stuff, so I would not trust them anymore than they would the US.

Iran has not attacked or invaded anyone in centuries, I think, but they do fund terrorists to fight Israel. But that is a chicken and egg situation, as Israel attcked Palestinians and stole their stuffs.

It's one big charlie foxtrot

You are an idiot.  Iran has built surrogate terrorist armies all over the world, including a sleeper fifth column that Val-Jar/Soetoro has built in the U.S.  They have been building a surrogate force in central America for years and now the Val-Jar/Soetoro coven is even using taxpayer money to import them by air into the U.S., jumping right over the border patrol.

Congress, of course, sits on its collective brains, worried about their lifelong political careers, and watches this muscum invasion and sinks into irrelevancy under the political aggression from the evil anti-american coven squatting in the white mosque.

Thank you Demoncraps and RINOs.

BRILLIANT....There's nothing like signing a deal with a country and then have the Pentagon make designs for blowing everything up.

Each and every American should realize that this is not being leaders of peace but as saboteurs to destroy every living thing in this world.

The USA should realize that with all the destruction in the Middle East that they've caused it has only created a further problem.  Take Libya for instance.  The country was destroyed and the lradership was handed over to a military organization.  This organaization has now joined forces with ISIS.  Does everyone understand that this occurring everywhere in the Middle east?

The only thing occurring is that the USA is propping up the dictators.   Suadi Arabia is a dictatorship of a family and nothing else.   Their only interest in Yemen is to prevent a takeover and to protect their own dictatorship.   Iran is backing a rebel group in Yemen.   The USA does not like this.   In Iraq, Iran is helping the Iraquis army.   The USA  is willing to bomb ISIS but not fight with IRAN's army in Iraq.

This is a giant cluster F---K of the worst order.   All caused by the USA's rediculous decision making.   It will only lead to a regional war and add to further deaths of over one million people in Iraq and 250,000 in Libya at current count.  There are countless more in the rest of the Middle East.

All courtesy of the USA.   It truly amazes me that very few people in the USA are speaking out against this problem.   Where are the marchers?  The Vietnam war is surely not the only war that you will show your displeasure.

It would have been better to have left all these countries intact with their dictatorships in place.   ISIS and the current problems would have been deterred by these countries.   Sad to say but true.   We have no right to try and change their culture as this has been the way for years.   Each successive dictatorship is replaced with another one.   All are tribal in nature and will never have anything to do with a democracy.

The only thing we should do in the west is refrain from imposing  our will on the Middle east to have our brand of government forced upon them.   The USA is not an example of a democracy for them to follow.   Most would concur with this conclusion.

This is kewl technology, y'know.  It seems that normal matter just refuses to stand in the way of a well-shaped explosion.  The trick, now, is to miniaturize this.  For one thing I doubt Israel has any way to deliver this kind of munition, unless we lend them a few B-2s.  I wonder what the technology is today on nuke-powered penetrators.  Even a megaton bomb at the surface won't penetrate like a MOP but a megaton shaped charge, now, could in theory be what, 200 times more powerful than a MOP and easier to carry, too.  So maybe a 10kt nuke penetrator could fit in a 500 pound frame and have the same power as this mf. Just sayin'.

In the next real war B2 bombers will fall out of the sky like raindrops...

The problem with the US is that they have been fighting against third world armies, and with absolute air superiority.

While Israel can argue that "Iran having nukes" is fatal to Israel (eventually), what will be *REALLY* fatal is for them to try to take out the Iranian nuclear facilities, and fail.

Operation Eagle Claw guaranteed Carter's defeat in 1980, giving Iran breathing space until the Anglo Zionist Deep State convinced Saddam to attack them.

A failed attack against Iran, where either Israeli or US Planes are shot down in significant numbers, will loudly proclaim to the entire World that Israel, and the US, have lost their MoJo and can be defeated.

THAT would cause much more serious problems to Israel's existence that a handful of Iranian nuclear weapons.

Team_USA / ZIOCON might consider Bunker Busting:

  • Nuke Development Sites
  • Nuke Ore
  • Petrol Pipelines (just to be spiteful - can't have them earning any money by legitamite trade)
  • Any Petrol/Nuke Overlap Sites
  • Military Bases (Let the 5th Column/Revolutionary Friendly Forces do a Coup)

Making all the Dust/Debris become the WMD/Fallout, I.E., Dirty Bombing IRN - with IRN "providing its own radioactive" material.  Of course, the Teams' Depleted Uranium bits packed in those Bunker Busters "don't count"

Sites will be dirty - nasty to clean up - pushing bace any form of Nuke Development (including Medicinal) for years.

SIDEBAR
I once spoke to an Iranian Jewish Man (I'll "name" this guy as TEACHER.  Not a Rabbi -just a play on names) I used to be acquainted with before he, his son, and a few more Iranian Jewish (Mitzrahi), Christian (J4J/Jews for Jeezus), Seventh Day, Mormon, JW, Chabad(Includes an allged IDF Deserter), White Trash, and Conservative Jewish(Masorti) (Figure Masons and Jesuits in the Daisy Chain when viewed down from 10K Meters) Types worked with an Armenian(who claimed to be Jewish) and some TWNese in a "Hire to Fire / Sabotage Lawsuit" scam they set me up in 2007 at a Japanese owned Bank during a Consulting Gig.

The Client site used a product that looked like it copied my work in 1999-2000.  Bank had someone in HR with the same surname as the owner of a SME Firm I interviewed with - which was a hostile environment (had some Asian(TWN/VNM) mocking me and calling me names DURING the Interview).

I remember discussing the ISRaeli tensions with IRN with talking to "TEACHER"before that racket.  He told me that there were thousands of Jewish in IRN, some feeding them info (as ISR was threatening a First Strike).  I asked him - in an Abrahamic kind of way - if ISR would strike IRN if thousands of Jewish and those unrelated to the Mullahs may be stricken as well.  Would ISR give an evacuation notice for the Jewish to "head for the hills, find a new country to live in, and don't look back" - in a Lot's Family Edition kind of way; and he responded with "No way - they' won't be told so the IRNians won't know when the Strike occurs.
END SIDEBAR

I do sympathize with all the OpSec Requirements; but seriously - if it's a Govt vs Govt conflict, you'd NOT give general warnings - even humanitarian ones - to Civilians who are not invovled?

What kind of message are we sending to the World this day?  If we can't negotiate a deal for IRN to work on its own Nuclear Programs, we'll bomb them and poison their people and land with Nuclear Materials?  If that happens, do they think the IRNs WON"T work on a Fission Bomb?  If that happens, do they think IRN won't smuggle out a Nuke or two to set off in the USA or ISR?

Lot of risks here - planned by Morons who still believe in the Shock and Awe Strategy.  They'll need Boots on the Ground to shut all Operations down.

I imagine it wouldn't be difficult to design an apparatus to defend a small very important site from this device.

Very wide large tall tower...tierd with concrete layers, tierd explosives all the way down, 10 thousand metal bolts fired at an angle aka metal storm all the way down the structure. And high thin layer way above the top, or a dome even...that acts as a trigger... when activated....and so on... could be fun.

And the thing is you could build thousands of fake strucutres to look like the real thing and intesperse them around the place. Making a direct hit on the real site more difficult.

For every measure there are always counter measures. Except nuclear devices as it only takes one to slip through and your toast, regardless how smart you think your missile shield is.

You know, here's a case where I side with Iran.  We should arm them with nukes, too.  It would save them time and save us the pain in the ass of storing and maintaining them.  Let's fly some over right now and drop them off in Tehran and other locations around the country.  Just to show there's no hard feelings, let's make them a surprise present and fly them in with our stealth bombers and drop them off where everyone can enjoy them.  Iran shouldn't be forced to reinvent the nuculer wheel, so to speak, so let's drop some nukes off there today!
