Chinese Taxi Drivers Attempt Mass Suicide Protest With Weed Killer, No One Dies

Tyler Durden's picture

In what may be proof of Dr. Patrick Moore’s rather morbid assertion that drinking Roundup isn’t the most effective suicide method, more than two dozen Chinese taxi drivers were found passed out in Beijing with empty pesticide bottles scattered around them in what appears to have been an effort to protest a law forbidding taxi driver self employment.

As The NY Times reports, drinking pesticide is a popular method of addressing grievances in China when all other methods fall on deaf ears:

A group of taxi drivers drank from bottles of pesticide in central Beijing on Saturday to protest what they said was poor treatment by their taxi companies, state and social media outlets reported.

At least 10 men, some of them frothing from the mouth, fell to the ground on a busy sidewalk at the Wangfujing shopping center about 11 a.m. after drinking the pesticide, according to the Beijing police force’s official microblog account. The men were rushed to nearby hospitals and all survived, the police said.

Videos of the protest quickly spread on Chinese social media sites, showing the men splayed on the ground and large crowds staring at them from behind police cordons.

According to The South China Morning Post, the men were all from a city in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang and tried to kill themselves to protest the way taxi companies renewed their vehicle leases.

Drinking pesticide is a common way to commit suicide in China, particularly in rural areas.

People with grievances in China have long sought to petition the central government in Beijing. But the ruling Communist Party presses local officials to thwart those seeking redress. Petitioners are often detained for protesting and trying to file lawsuits. Many are beaten, threatened and sometimes sent away to mental hospitals to prevent them from airing their grievances in the capital.

All of the protesters were hospitalized and are "out of danger," according to local media.

The article gets pesticide and herbicide mixed up.  Chinese taxi drivers probably don't know the difference either.  Looks like some ZHers are also clueless.

Technically speaking, a herbicide is a pesticide. Pesticide is a general term. If you want to kill bugs then you use a insecticide. If you want to kill weed then you use a herbicide. If you want to kill fungi you use a fungicide. They are all considered pests. If you want to kill humans then you can use a humangicide. Ok, that I made up. But I am sure people thought about that (biological, chemical and nuclear weapons. TV also kills but slowly).

This was a publicity stunt. If they really would have wanted to kill themselves with pesticides they could have. If they didn't know how though, they should have asked farmers how much and which pesticides or combination thereof they should have used.

Yes it was theatre .... yes it was a protest .... yes certain pesticides won't kill you .... yes, I still wouldn't drink them .... even on a stupid dare from a journalist .... this story is about independent taxi drivers .... and the cruel, stupid, Chinese authorities .... this is not about Monsanto !

But we have the same shit problems as the Chinese. The taxi companies here are State controlled and that means a licence is very expensive which results in expensive taxi fares.

I knew that lobbyist was telling the truth

Now that the Chinese taxi drivers have proven his claim to be true there's no need for the BoD, executives or lobbyists to step up and take a swig or two

Now eat your round-up soaked harvest and shut up you worthless eaters. The global population reduction plans are behind schedule

Lazy fact checking ZH. Article says they injested pesticide, a popular method of committing suicide in China. Roundup is an herbicide. The WHO had a health bulletin on this method of suicide.  Organophosphates, like DDT, Diazanon, and Malathion, are similar to chemical warfare agents produced during WWII, and are highly toxic if injested.

"Organophosphates are of particular concern not only because they are often used in suicide attempts, but because exposure to them may actually increase the likelihood of a person developing a mental disorder. According to a recent study examining the link between organophosphate pesticide and suicidal ideation published in the October issue of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization this year suicide rates are higher in areas where organophosphates are used, while exposure is also a possible risk factor for Parkinson, and Alzheimer diseases. The report states that exposure to the chemical could also be implicated in the development of depressive and anxiety disorders, and in deaths ascribed to mental disorders. In 2006, WHO published a report on community interventions for safer access to pesticides and, in 2008, a document entitled Clinical Management of Acute Pesticide Intoxication to disseminate this information as widely as possible, particularly among policy-makers."

Hellz no!  Monsanto and Big Ag are poisoning our food supply with Roundup.  Now that superweeds have defeated that poison, they will be using a wonderful "cocktail", adding 2,4-d, an Agent Orange derivative.  I'd look into this for this kind of poisoning for things like autism, before I'd look at the measles vaccine.  Big Ag is right up there with Big Pharma as forces of evil embedded in our form of predatory capitalism.

Still, best to get facts straight.  No need to invent them.
