Germany Slams "Stupid" Greek Demands For "Incomprehensible" €278 Billion In Reparations

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday we reported that in what may have been an attempt to stun the world, if not so much Germany, with the law of large numbers, Greece calculated that Germany owes it a whopping €278 billion in World War II reparations, or about a third of what Germany reported was its GDP in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for Greece, Germany does not appear to be rushing to wire the funds. As Reuters reported earlier today, Germany's economy minister had one word for the Greek demand: "stupid."

From Reuters:

Sigmar Gabriel, who is economy minister and German vice chancellor, called the demand "stupid", saying Greece ultimately had an interest in squeezing a bit of leeway out of its euro zone partners to help Athens overcome its debt crisis.

"And this leeway has absolutely nothing to do with World War Two or reparation payments," said Gabriel, who leads the Social Democrats (SPD), junior partner in the ruling coalition with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives.

Berlin is keen to draw a line under the reparations issue and officials have previously argued that Germany has honored its obligations, including a 115-million deutsche mark payment made to Greece in 1960. A spokeswoman for the finance ministry said on Tuesday that the government's position was unchanged.

Other Germans were likewise unimpressed:

Eckhardt Rehberg, a budget expert for the conservatives, accused Athens of deliberately mixing the debt crisis and reform requirements imposed by Greece's international creditors with the issue of reparations and compensation.

"For me the figure of 278.7 billion euros of supposed war debts is neither comprehensible nor sound," he told Reuters. "The issue of reparations has, for us, been dealt with both from a political and a legal perspective."

It may not be sound but from the standpoint of the Greeks it is completely comprehensible: with their back against the wall, and with sovereign and financial bankruptcy breathing down the Greeks' neck, the country may as well go for the Hail Mary pass: who knows it just may find enough supportive voices in Germany to reach the endzone.

And, to our surprise, not one but two political parties in Germany are willing to help Greece out with this particular desperation "pass" because members of both the Greens and the far-left Linke party have said that Berlin should cough up some of the €10.3 billion in wartime loan repayment.

Both Manuel Sarrazin, a European policy expert for the Greens, and Annette Groth, a member of the leftist Linke party and chairman of a German-Greek parliamentary group, told Reuters that Berlin should repay a so-called occupation loan that Nazi Germany forced the Bank of Greece to make in 1942.

Berlin and Athens should "jointly and amicably" take any other claims to the International Court of Justice, Sarrazin said.

Groth went further, saying: "If you look at Greece's debt and the European Central Bank's bond purchases every month, it puts the figure of 278.7 billion euros into perspective."

She said the German government should, at the very least, talk to Athens about how it came up with that figure.

"The German government's categorical 'Nein' certainly cannot be allowed to stand. That's disgraceful 70 years after the end of the war," Groth said.

It can't but it will, because with Frau Merkel it is all about keeping stern appearances. However, just in case Greece needed encouragement to continue the pursuit of this ultimately futile line of attack, the two German opposition parties have certainly provided it. Then again, the final outcome, one that depends entirely on Angela Merkel's decision, is clear. And sadly it now looks like Greece will spend even more time pursuing this lost cause with a final outcome that - at least for Greece - does not look good, than focusing what little energy and focus it has left on what it shoudl have been doing over the past 5 years - reforming.

Finally, let's not forget that this is Europe, where a little under a century ago, it was again the issue of German reparations thrust upon a far weaker Germany, that led to not only the rise of German hyperinflation and the rise of Adolf Hilter, but maybe even more importantly, led to the creation of that all important entity, the one which is the true committee that runs the world, the Bank of International Settlements, in whose Tower of Basel, every two months, unelected academics sit down and decided the fate of the world.

One can't possibly imagine what outcomes the question of German war reparations will lead to on this particular occasion.

Parts of it though. And I guess that is what he is refering to. Southern parts and the southwest of todays Germany were once governed by Romans - Colonia Agrippina, Augusta Treverorum, Mogontiacum, Castra Regina, Bonna. These are all major cities in Germany - some of them were inhabited by non-Germanic tribes at the time - like the Treveri. Nonetheless - not all of Germany was governed by Romans. Famously the Romans were crushed 9 AD in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (although the real location of the battle is closer to the Kalkriese Hill). And then came the revenge operations, the Limes and yada yada yada. Unlike the rest of Western Europe - Germany never was totally conquered or governed by the Romans. So you're both correct.

I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.  Armed with Harmon’s tip to "place it on Lucky Dan", Lonnegan made a $500,000 bet at my fake betting agency on Lucky Dan to win. Now stay with me because this gets tricky. As the race began, my boy Harmon arrived and expressed shock at Lonnegan's bet, explaining that when he said "place it" he meant, literally, that Lucky Dan would "place". Lonnegan shat himself and ran to the teller window, demanding his money back. Just as this happens, my man "Agent Polk", Lt. Snyder, and a half dozen "FBI officers" storm in. "Polk" confronted me, telling Hooker he was free to go. So I pull a gun and shoot Hooker in the back. Polk then shoots me - I hit the floor - then he orders that slimeball Snyder to get the ostensibly respectable Lonnegan away from the crime scene. With Lonnegan and Snyder safely away, Hooker and me rise amid cheers and laughter. See Agent Polk is actually my boy Hickey, a con man, running a con atop my con to divert Snyder and provide a solid "blow off". Hooker even refused his share of the money, saying "I'd only blow it", and walks away with me. Easy money fellas. Easy money.

Grexit could very well mean the end of the Euro. The Greek can build on a long history of playing political games. They are not in a rush. They are looking for alternatives and other partners: Russia and China,  using their geopolitical strategically important position as negotiation. If they default they can start anew while creditors stand with empty hands. They just need to make sure that somebody else will buy their olives and come and visit their beaches. China wants their harbours, Russia wants to bring gas via Turkey and Greece to Western Europe, bypassing Ukraine. Yesterday Turkey, Greece, Macedonia (FYROM), Serbia and Hungary signed an agreement to that effect.

The only thing that might keep the Euro and even the EU together is Greek debt forgiveness. Greece will never be able to pay back its debts. It will cripple their economy and their recovery. But the Troika -I mean 'institutes'- wants to keep the perpetual debt machine going.

Germany has gold .. supposedly in some vault in NY or London. Doesn't matter if its there or not. Those responsible don't care to check. It is viable on paper as a means to create money. Couple that with German GDP and you got a good basis for a solid currency.

Germany sells more and more product into China. Who really cares about Greece? The debt writeoffs will create headaches but nobody in Germany will lose their house or go hungry over it.

The Russians already have a base in Syria. Suppose they get a few bases in Greece and Cyprus? They then can close off the whole MED, Black Sea and access to the Suez canals. The Americans have Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo. Their biggest base outside the US which can be seen from space. That was one of the real reason for the war with Serbia over Kosovo: to create a camp that if needed can be used to control the Black Sea. Well, Russia took Crimea and if they would get bases in Greece then Camp Bonsteel once of a sudden looks quite silly.

These are documents which were compiled by the german Wehrmacht during the occupation (and left behind), so trust them to be correct and complete down to the last gold tooth.

However, the demand is ridiculous.

Greece joint the European Community (EC) in 1981.

Since then, Germany put about 200.000.000.000€ MORE INTO  the European Coffers, than we got out of them.

Greece, on the other hand, received 100.000.000.000€ MORE OUT of the European Coffers, than they put  into them. With this money they should have modernized their infrastructure, economy, agriculture. Which they did'nt.

Case closed.

That would go over big.

This is just senseless stupidity by the Greek Government. Regardless of everything else that's ridiculous about it, even if Greece was somehow to get E278 Billion it would just waste it on lining pockets, public sector non-jobs and imported goods in a week and be back asking for more the following day. It crazy talk like this that makes you realise that the Tsipiras / Varoufakis act really haven't a clue what they're doing and they're not fit to be part of a currency or any other union.

Greece is embarrasing the hell out of the EU.  They will not stop and are getting more creative.  It's like an evil divorce on steroids.  Usually someone steps in and separates the two parties and stops the nastiness.  Not happening here.  Reminds me of the movie with Michael Douglas "The Roses" or something like that.

World War II was provoked by Jews.

World War two was fomented by England.

World War II was financed by jewish banks.

Jews have to pay it all and I hope, they will pay it one day.

Dear Greeks, why don't you bother the jews, Britons, Americans? Why do you bother Germans?

Greeks have to enforce the payment from Germans.

Greeks do have an army, don't they?

Greeks should invade Germany and take their share.

/sarcasm off.

Only a military power can enforce repayment of any debt.

I derived the above statement from studying the history of the last 5000 years until today.

Ah Jano my brother , problem is Germany is still occupied by agents of Zion . If a majority of the German people knew the truth THEY would be demanding reparations off just about everybody who helped force them back into the shackles of international zionist usurers by gang raping , pedophiling, murdering and burning alive the civilian population of Greater Germany. But a majority of Germans have been "educated" to be "self-haters"

The Greek claim is obviously legal and maybe still enforceable. Germany would get into difficulties if Greece would take visible steps to pursue the claim. That is apparently a realistic threat to Germany and certainly a political nightmare that could turn into a Waterloo.

Took the words out of ma mouth.  Churchill's advisor Frederick Lindemann - a "German" Jew - devised a complex optimization program whereby 80% of Germany's building infrastructure could be destroyed by systematic carpet bombing.  Dresden was one result of the plan's implementation. As his biographer Max Hastings observed 'I also believe he hoped 80% of his erstwhile countrymen would be buried under the ensuing rubble but he was too genteel to say so".

If the Germans are paying Israel reparations for crimes against Jews done in WWII, then why shouldn't Greece demand reparations either? After all, the latter's claim is more legally sound, if at least because the beneficiary is more clear, whereas in Israel many people do not descend from those who have suffered from German WWII actions but nevertheless benefit from these reparations.

Tsipras, visiting Moskow today, could assign the Greek claim over about 300 billion Euros to Russia for the purpose of debt collection. After analysis of the legality of the claim (which is quite legal I recently read) Moscow could accept the assignment and transfer the claim to its debt collection department headed by Sergei Kuschugetowitsch Schoigu.

True dat, Adolph,s heart may have been in the right place and undoubtedly he was a genuine patriot and truely cared for his people in his authoritarian way ( he was a survivor of extreme physical abuse by his father) and a great many German people loved him for reviving their country and giving them their pride back and for giving the "finger" to the occupation "tribe". But he made some serious mistakes number one being he should have left the German military experts run the war . Number one rule of history you dont invade Russia if you can help it and definitely not half way thru summer.

Talking about "stupid " . Expecting the Greek people to pay a debt impossible to repay and expecting the population to be enslaved for generations .

" STUPID " expecting that at debt incurred by sobterfuge , tricks , bank scandals LIBOR , rigging of currencies , loans , FOREX , Golman Sachs and IMF machinations and incompetent and corrupt politicians would be repaid by a population .

Was there any lesson in what happend in ICELAND ?

" STUPID ' is expecting that after treating Greece like a PARIA state nothing wil change in the geopolitical alignenments ..

" STUPID " is the belief that EU modus operandi should not change . The so called uneclected Soviet EU leaders after showing their true allegiances ( BANK and Zionists ) , if they continue on the same track regarding sovereign debt ..... in a few years will not have any more members of the EU to tyrannize .

Italy debt at the monent is 132 % of PIL and it is staying up becasue of extra low interest rates ......

eh? who is expecting Greece to repay that debt? you seem a bit confused

what the creditor nations expect from Greece it two things:

first, repayment of the IMF loans (yes, they do take precedence before all others)

second... a balanced budget

but for propaganda purposes it's convenient for SYRIZA to point to the debt as such instead to the budget, because balancing a budget is against every fibre of their ideology

three quarters of this Greek debt is in the hands of a few european nations that bailed out Greece and don't expect any interest on it until 2023

but go on and talk about "the debt". lol, as if it would ever be paid

There is only one specialist in collecting war reparations and that is Israel. 70 years after WWII they still (rightly ot wrongly) find things to claim for.

If Greece had any sense they would subcontract the task to Israel in return for 20% of what they can squeeze out of Germany.

Having said that things have worked out quite well. Greece will not collect from Germany and Germany will not collect from Greece.

In private all Germans with clout admit that Greece will never pay her debt and the rest is just for public consumption.
