Peak British Obesity?

Tyler Durden's picture

A funny thing happened in Britain... as calorie intake has fallen by 8% in the last decade and 4.4% since 2010, driven both by eating out less and eating healthier at home, so obesity levels are stabilising versus recent years with the number of patients diagnosed as obese also declined by 15% yoy in 2013/14, following a 7% decline in 2012/13. In the US, however, the latest data shows that obesity is still rising...

As Goldman Sachs asks, has obesity peaked in the UK? And what about the US?

The UK’s latest statistical release of diet habits and obesity in the country throws up some interesting observations. While the prevalence of obesity remains high versus history at c.26% and 24% for men and women, respectively, the levels are stabilising versus recent years.

  • Obesity in men is below the 2010 highs and for women the rate has fallen back to 2009 levels.
  • The number of patients diagnosed as obese also declined by 15% yoy in 2013/14, following a 7% decline in 2012/13.

Changes in food consumption behaviour are consistent with this observation; calorie intake has fallen by 8% in the last decade and 4.4% since 2010, driven both by eating out less and eating healthier at home. Has obesity peaked in the UK?

And across the pond:

In the US, latest data shows that obesity is still rising, but a deeper look at the information suggests that this rise could be stemmed. Calorie consumption in 20-year olds has shrunk by 9% in the last ten years, even though consumption in older age groups is still high and not really declining. Self-reported data points published by Gallup paint a consistent picture – the rise in obesity is being driven primarily by baby boomers and the soon-to-retire population, while younger adults are recording a more benign change.

The momentum in changing food consumption habits is even more evident in company reported data. Same store sales for US fast food burger joints have been declining over the last year or so, and our analysts believe that responses to this, such as McDonald’s initiative to introduce antibiotic free chicken and kale on its menus, is unlikely to move the needle on millennials’ attitude toward the brand. Volume declines for carbonated soft drinks tell a similar story; note that less than a decade ago, energy drinks and soda accounted for over 9% of all calories consumed by teenagers and over 7% for 19-30 year olds in the US.

The bottom line:

We are beginning to see the initial effects of the ongoing health and wellness wave in DMs on obesity levels. However, we are far from concluding that the tide has turned.

Disgusting food for the corporate serfs everywhere, other than that if you have money and good taste you can dine very well or shop for good quality food (Waitrose is a good example) . This was once the wealthiest and most learned land on earth until the "chosen banker" engineered world wars deliberately killed off a generation of Anglo/Saxon/Viking youth in their  prime and impoverished and made stupid thru trauma those left behind

Is there a correlation amongst females with regard to BMI and number of visible tatoos?

Methinks there is at least in my anecdotal observations.

When I was a kid 50 years ago the only people who ate kale were my old immigrant relatives from Holland and Scotland. Kale was something poor people ate in northern countries because they couldn't afford anything good. Kale went with the  black bread, potatoes and turnips.

Seeing it become a foodie fashion surprised me a little but, what is there left to "discover"? All the good grub has had its 15 minutes of fame.

Arrr well you see the MSM can do something.  That is to say, Kale, they've got people drinking it as some super food.  Black bread, you know they stuck that on Wink wink, good'old Jamie Olivers' 15minute meals and it's as good as done.  I think he even sold them potatos and turnips too.  About the weight thing, one big change has happened; they don't sell jelly donuts in 10's anymore, just 5's for same price, some without jelly and put it down to sugar tax, don't mention inflation.

You should look up Dr. Hindehede's ration plan for Denmark in WW1. Food was rationed, there was no imported food available because of the blockade, and everyone lived on black bread, potatoes, barley porridge, and home grown vegetables like cabbages, kale, carrots and turnips. With very  limited amounts of milk, eggs, and meat. All the distilleries were shut down and beer production cut in half. No sugar, tobacco, coffee, tea, citrus fruit or other imported goods.

During this period of time, the death rate dropped to the lowest ever recorded in a European country.

Infectious diseases dropped slightly but lifestyle diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes dropped 30% - 40%. And this experiment lasted only one year.

I'd prefer stricter standards, though, and no GMO at all

I have met the enemy, and his name is carbohydrates and/or sugar.

High fat low carb diet = fat loss in spades, without endless hours of cardio.  The low fat high carb diet + endless insane cardio = feeling hungry all the time.

HFLC diet = eating as much as I want and still seeing fat melt away, sans cardio.

Just stronglift 5x5 3 times per week.  Take away sodas, bread, sugars, and TV and you could get back to your healthy weight without a gym membership.

But try to tell people that eating bacon, butter, and eggs won't make you fat and watch their heads spin.

The propaganda is strong in Murica.

FUCK YEAH!

One in three Americans (obese) is packing it on for when their "Special Period" hits, just down the road. Living pay check to pay check, mostly on entitlements, when that service comes to an end, they'll be living off the "fat of the land". Just make sure you can run faster than them. It's going to be a medieval circus; lot's of gourmandizing on what ever they can get their stubby fingers on. It's why I still stay in shape, although, they might think twice about burning calories over catching my lean body...output/input ration not worth the fuss for them. That is why anyone who plans to make it to the "other side" needs to have a sound bicycle.
