That's a common misconception among traders, and a bit lit saying Godzilla isn't eating Tokyo if I close my eyes and can't see him. Your net worth is what it is at any given second, whether you close that trade or not. If you are sitting on a million dollar loser, you just lost a million bucks whether you close the trade or not. Reality doesn't care about your intentions. It works in reverse too, if you holding an open trade with a million dollars of profit in it, you are up a million dollars. Protecting it or not protecting it, doesn't change that reality.

I believe it would be more precise to say "trend" is a subjective term, a qualitative assessment of whether you can make money from a given amount of price movement relative to your time frame, given the existing noise or chop.
There is nothing illusory about price movement, that's as real as it gets.

Smiddy...you used to be smarter than this. Prices are neither rising or falling - they either have risen, or have fallen. This is true over every time horizon - nano-second or 20-year view. Any claim that one can infer future moves in prices by extrapolation of prior moves is pure speculation (or manipulation). And if you are speculating, then you have moved your holdings away from its default store of value. Once you do that, your transient gains/losses are irrelevant until the position is closed.
