Germany Orders 100 Tanks To "Ensure Troops Are Ready To Respond To Russian Assertiveness"
With Jean-Claude Juncker demanding a Unified European Army, it appears Germany is wasting no time in simultaneously boosting its own economy with warfare spending and comforting a 'fearful populace' with more military might. As Reuters reports, Germany plans to procure more than 100 additional Leopard 2 tanks, increasing its total Leopard 2 tank inventory by a whopping 45% a government spokesman said on Friday, as it seeks to ensure its "troops are ready for action in response to concerns over recent Russian assertiveness."

The decision to restock its military comes as NATO tries to hasten the response time of its rapid reaction force following Russia's annexation of Crimea last year and conflict in Ukraine.
"The ministry has decided to raise the upper limit for the future to 328," a defense ministry spokesman told a regular government news conference on Friday, confirming a report by German magazine Spiegel.
Just before the end of the Cold War, in the 1980s, the then West Germany had more than 3,500 tanks. Now, seventy years after World War Two, it has just 225. As a result soldiers have to share tanks and heavy equipment across different units.
Given NATO's new goals on flexibility and rapid reaction time, Germany has to ensure that it can deploy troops with the correct equipment to the right place in a short period of time, the spokesman said. "This can only succeed if the equipment does not need to be first moved around through the country," he said.
The Leopard tanks are made by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW).

They only have 50 Leopard II? Not even one armored division?
1) It is not important how many tanks a single European state keeps avaiable (...what would be the situation in landlocked states like Alabama or Idaho against a Russian Canada?)
2) A Leo ist not 1:1 a T90 (as e. g. 10 tigers easily could stop 100 T34 or more. The Leo is the product of all mistakes done before
3) What counts is the industrial and financial capacity to produce 100 tanks in a very short time. At home or simply requesting NATO-material in the West - this would be no conflict to be solved in isolation without raw materials, fuel and oil and people as it was in WWII. The Western industrial and financial capacity is hundred times higher than in Ivan-Country. Russia would not have survived WWII without massive Western aid (e. g. tenthousends of trucks).
4) in 2015 war is not the same. You need tanks to controll air-outbombed cities - and not to conquer them. Germany is not intenting to conquer Russian cities or millions of square miles anyway - the only purpose of Bundeswehr is to be part of the NATO-defending-strategy. Why spending unneccessary money to feed arm industries in peace time, if a whole NATO is backing security and sharing costs?
5) In a conventional conflict the actual threat would be only located in the East (single front) - not from the West, North, South, open Atlantic and from above. Not a years lasting full blown conventional war against the rest of the world supporting each other.
Last not least: Sell some nice cars to te oligarchs - the rest is networking and corruption. Beside of this there are still some intelligent people in Moskau & Berlin coming to the conclusion that finally peace makes more sense than war.

You know a better tank? (You really think that the 2015-product is the same to the first design?). Most weapons have a long tradition. E. G. B52-Bombers from the 50ths or WW-II aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41) until 2004 taking part in the second golf war.
If Russian tanks would be competitive Saudi-Arabia would not try to get Leos (...they could easily order another tranche of T90s as they did in 2007).

What would those 100 German tanks be good for? Stopping the Russians from rolling over Western Europe, and the US guys in Ramstein not doing anything but watching in amazement? They would surely have their fingers moved downwards before.

You confuse the Leopard 2 is much much newer than that scoring much higher than the T90 series. Lose something in the translation?

I live in Germany and can say that most Germans feel much more threatened by the nazis running the US than they do by Russia. In fact many here hope that Russia comes out on top as they see a future with Russia and China and nothing but misery in remaining close to the US.

No, those tanks will be built by Wegmann in Kassel, Germany. Until now Kassel was a boom town, partly because of SMA who build solar equipment. Now that the solar hype is over they are approaching bankruptcy, and thousands of workers need new jobs. So let them build tanks.
