Iran Unveils "Suicide Drones" Amid Nuclear Deal Talks
While the deal to discuss the deal that may or may not become a deal in June is still lingering in the news cycle, it seems Iran (fresh from its demands for complete sanctions lifting) is comfortable with some sabre-rattling. As the Washington Times reports, citing U.S. Army analysis, Iran’s army is creating military explosive-mounted killer drones, increasing the risk for Israeli and U.S. ships in the Gulf. So while all eyes are firmly focused on the threat of nukes, the US military reports states that "no aspect of Iran’s overt military program has seen as much development over the past decade as Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles.. promises to make American operations in both the Persian Gulf and Gulf Aden [at the Red Sea] more complicated."
As Al-Arabiya reports, Iran’s army is creating military explosive-mounted killer drones, increasing the risk for Israeli and U.S. ships in the Gulf, the Washington Times reported on Thursday, citing U.S. Army analysis.
The army is believed to have tested the suicide drones in December last year against ship targets near the Strait of Hormouz, the report added.
The analysis report reads: “While it is easy to dismiss the idea of a suicide drone as more symbolic than real in an age of cruise missiles and precise Predators, utilizing suicide drones is an asymmetric strategy which both allows Iran to compete on an uneven playing field and poses a risk by allowing operators to pick and choose targets of opportunity over a drone's multi-hour flight duration.”
The report concludes: “Perhaps no aspect of Iran’s overt military program has seen as much development over the past decade as Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles Iran’s explosive emphasis on drone development promises to make American operations in both the Persian Gulf and Gulf Aden [at the Red Sea] more complicated and can also pose a proliferation concern should Iran export suicide drones to groups like Hezbollah or Bashar al-Assad loyalists in Syria.”
The Washington Times report claimed Iran was sharing drone technologies with “allies Hamas on Israel's south and Hezbollah on its north.”
It is believed that Iran’s drone capabilities have already been used at least twice – first when Hamas launched three reconnaissance drones into Israeli airspace and also in Gaza.
But while the report said the Iranian air force was no match for the U.S.'s, the drones could potentially inflict levels of damage similar to that caused by the Japanese kamikaze attacks during World War II, according to the newspaper.
Contract analyst to the U.S. Army Foreign Military Study Office Michael Rubin told the Washington Times "suicide drones could be especially effective in the narrow Gulf waters."
He said: “This makes the Iranian development of drones specifically to interfere with helicopter operations extraordinarily dangerous,.. The Iranians have long probed American ships’ defenses in international waters, but you can communicate with an Iranian boat. You can’t communicate with an Iranian drone, and so the slippery slope to a real military engagement has just gotten closer.”

You have to remember - this article is from the Washington Times. The collective IQ of their entire readership is barely above 20.
A cruise missile is fired with a definite target uploaded into its software pre-launch and is not human-guided during flight. A drone is human guided during entire flight (unless they are now using autonomous kill decision software, which is a really bad developement).
I expect the asymetrical aspect is that these boys will make thousands of these that will have non-human kill decision initiated once over target area. Kinda like what the Soviets did during SDI days (you can shoot down our ICBMs, ok, shoot down these 15000 missiles all at the same time).

I do wonder if swarms of min-drones might not work at overwhelming the defences of a carrier. Imagine if each drone 'pilot' controlled a swarm comprising 20 or 30 sparrow-sized drones that all just do the same thing. It would take hundreds of shots to knock them all out of the sky... any that got past defences could be flown down gun muzzles or ventilation shafts or aircraft engine inlets before exploding.
You'd have to be sure your control signals still reached them in the vicinity of the carrier, though, so jamming them might not be too difficult.

I know of two other systems but more powerful have been contracted for production and installation on F-35, B1, B2 and B52.
Such small high-powered gimballed lasers will proliferate like wild fire in the next five years. Killing drones has been one of the other drivers for their development (besides burning out missile guidance sensors that is).
Going to be a huge and unpredictable change to what works, and what then doesn't work, once that proliferation takes place.
This exploding attack drone swarm idea is not new either, as the US has been talking about it of course, like fill a whole C-17 with heaps of them in pallets, kick them out the door, and go attack a city or a battlefield with them, target soldiers and vehicles, etc. I guarantee you that such a weapon system already exists in US hands.

When talking about the gulf, I think that mines have the potential to be far more lethal than drones, and there are some very sophisticated mines.
just look at the coast line, and note that Iran controls about half of all the shores. They can, and probably already have, plant thousands of mines to work just like the IED's did in Iraq.
They would not even have to take out our battleships. Just release a bunch of them and take out a few tankers. No more insurance for gulf ports & $200/barrel oil almost instantly.

So, if everything goes right and according to plan then yes, they are invincible.

first EMP them hard, then fly your low tech aircraft in, along with thousands of diesel tanks.. get a foothold inside israel and fight old style... with small arms.
keep supply of soldiers coming.. after emp israel's stuff doesn't work... only their guns.. even their anti tank weapons don't work.. but rpg does.
