1971...Mom ordered me to take my sisters on a five mile hike to the catholic church. I was 11, they were 9 and 8. The only way I knew of that made sense of hiking in the desert was a straight line over the hill, through the quarry I'm now the controller for, and across the scrub to the church. Made it there with no problem.
Coming back, when we got to the quarry, we ran into a pack of coyotes numbering about fifteen. I found an old steering wheel with column attached in the quarry junk and kind of swung it slowly in front of us. Coyotes retreated a couple feet as we neared and we made it through with nothing more than wet undies.
If those had been feral dogs I wouldn't be posting the encounter.
also lucky it was in 1971 out west. the new wolfotes were bred and released, and actually admitted to by -authorities- are wolf. and coyote.
FYI Up here in northern NY and Vermont the coyotes are the size of German Shepherds and howl in packs at night around a kill. In VT the hunting season is all year while in Northern NY it's Oct. 1–March 29. They do not hunt alone.

Already happened- Cape Breton, about 5 years ago.A 26yo girl was eaten by two coywolves. Why these things aren't shot on sight, I don't know. The Canadian .gov actually put up signs at trailheads warning of these things. They are not natural or native to the area= shoot them!
