Why Is WalMart Mysteriously Shuttering Stores Nationwide For "Plumbing Issues"?

Tyler Durden's picture

Earlier this year, WalMart became one of several corporate heavyweights to lift wages for its meagerly compensated workers, around 500,000 of which are now set to receive at least $9/hour and $10/hour by Q1 2016 (that of course assumes they make it on $9 an hour for another 12 months and don’t seek out other employment by sheer necessity).

Meanwhile, as we noted earlier this month, the move by the country’s largest retailer to pay a few extra pennies to its (basically) minimum wage employees comes at a cost to the company’s suppliers because when you operate on the thinnest of margins in order to be the “low price leader,” someone has to pay for those wage hikes and you can’t pass along the costs to customers because many of your low-income patrons are operating from the same tax bracket as your low-paid employees. As such, the poor companies along the supply chain are forced to lower their prices and of course they’re going to comply because well, you’re WalMart meaning you’re your vendors’ biggest account pretty much by default. The outcome is that “while WMT (or MCD or GAP or Target) boosts the living standards of its employees by the smallest of fractions, it cripples the cost and wage structure of the entire ecosystem of vendors that feed into it, and what takes place is a veritable avalanche effect where a few cent increase for the lowest paid megacorp employees results in a tidal wave of layoffs for said megacorp's vendors.”

If that doesn’t turn out to be enough in the face of an economy which isn’t really recovering and in which low-income shoppers are constrained by lackluster (and by that we mean nonexistent) wage growth, some sacrifices may have to be made. The problem is that laying people off and shuttering stores two months after a celebrated wage hike initiative doesn’t inspire much confidence and could turn into a PR issue, but one thing you could do is get creative, and while we’re not plumbers, we do find it curious that five geographically distinct WalMart stores have been closed in the past week for “ongoing plumbing issues that will require extensive repairs.”

Here’s more from a local CBS affiliate:

10 News called the county. Officials say they have no record of any code or permit violation at the Brandon location.

And when 10 News was at the Walmart Tuesday, there were no marked septic trucks or plumbing vehicles in the lot.

"Where is everybody if they're supposed to be working on everything where are all the trucks?" asked shopper Melissa Dupuis.

10 News asked a Walmart spokesperson whether the five stores were built from the same design, whether they had the same contractor, anything to understand why all of them closed on the same day for "plumbing issues."

The only thing they have in common, the spokesperson said are the highest number of plumbing incidents.

Leaving some customers to wonder "how many things have they not said. That's scary," said shopper Norma Espinosa.

And here’s more from a local ABC report in Florida:

BRANDON, Fla. - Employees of a Walmart in Brandon that abruptly closed Monday were among more than 2,000 employees nationwide who learned almost simultaneously they were being laid off.

In a nearly identical manner at every store, Walmart corporate officials visited the five locations, called an impromptu meeting in the back of the store and told employees that the stores would be closing that evening.

Besides Brandon, the affected locations were in Pico Rivera, Calif., Livingston, Texas, Midland, Texas, Tulsa, Okla.

“The issues mostly relate to clogs and water leaks in the plumbing - we’ve had persistent issues over the last several years,“ said a Walmart spokesperson said.

“These incidents impact the availability of water and create drainage issues for critical areas of the store which impacts our ability to serve customers,” she said.

“Normally, we do our best to avoid disrupting a store’s operations. However, given this particular store had one of the highest incidences of plumbing issues in the entire fleet and in order to reduce the costs associated with these incidents, we felt it was in the store’s best interest to invest in making the necessary improvements to resolve these issues,” the spokesperson said.

The I-Team has learned that none of the five affected stores have sought any plumbing permits for future repairs.

“We’re in a holding pattern. We’re anxious to learn exactly what they’re planning,” said Pico Rivera City Manager James Enriquez, when we contacted him about the store’s closing Tuesday.

Enriquez says when Walmart notified the city Monday that it was closing the store, he offered his full support in trying to get it back open.

“My building official walked out there and didn’t see any work being done,” he said.

So there you have it, “clogs and water leaks” but no plumbing permits and 2,000 affected employees, many of whom were presumably just given the news that they would be getting a raise only to discover that they will get 60 days of pay before they’ll need to find a job at another WalMart location (hopefully one with no plumbing issues) or find other employment. We’ll leave it to readers to discern if these “clogs and leaks” are real or whether the company is just quietly shutting down stores across the country.

You are partly right.  The douche CEO has been whining for years that EBT needs a raise, so his customers can shop more.

But the real knife in walmart's gut is online retailers.  Most people I know shop online unless they need something like a light bulb.  Much better selection, much better pricing, much better experience -- and they deliver right to your door.

Fuck walmart.  If they go out of business, small businesses willl have a chance again.  I only hope someone hangs the executive ranks right next to the banksters.

Have you seen the huge (I mean huge!) people frequenting WalMart? So big you cannot see the poor machine their sitting on. Now picture them over one of those puny toilets. They must use some sort of high tech bomb sights just to center their ass, then it's "Bomb's Away"

I have seen those poor toilets completely filled with,,, shall we say,,, crap. Makes for a whole new shopping experience.

Wonder what the economic conditions are in those locations?  Probably vampired the area dry, and now looking for a legit way of moving on without drawing attention, or loss of revenue.  In fact their plumbing is probably insured somehow, so they do not lose there either.

I went to see the store today the one in Brandon, They had staged like 15 mobile contrainer cargo containers the bifg ones and had plumbing VANs in the parking lot. What is odd is that all of this must have taken some preperation yet they did not inform any of the staff to last minute ...

Fucking Waltons are worth billoins ans billions all on the back of their working poor and suppliers. When is enough enough? You can't share a little of that gravy with the folks in the trencghes? Everything has to be on the shoulders of the supplier and the employees? And thats why I dont shop at WalMart.

It’s not sharing, it fairly compensating. There is a very distinct difference. It’s not whining, It’s the mark of decency. I run a small engineering firm with 15 employees. I make a good living from my employees. I could make more…by not giving them 4 figure Christmas bonuses…by not providing them with 100% company provided health insurance…by not giving them incentive bonuses. So, I ask you again, YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE, when is enough enough? For you, the answer is it’s never enough. You are what’s wrong with the world. It’s not free shit, and it’s not giving shit away. It’s reasonably compensating the people that support you, because you can.

Stop lying.  You provide benefits because you need to retain skilled workers.  Don't try to tell us you are some sort of saint, who loves his employees.

Walmart competes with amazon and other online retailers, who have almost no overhead.  I hate the place and never shop there.  But at least I'm not some douche bag socialist who thinks every company has to be a mother to their workers.  Those workers are in dire straits because the don't have skills.  If they want a better job, they can work hard and obtain some skills.

Aldi does.  Their Aldi and Trader Joes stores pay the employees well.  They kicked the shit out of WMT in Germany and WMT left.  Aldi is owned by the Albrecht family who are Catholics.  I am not pushing religion but it seems like the family walks the walk as Christians with their employees.  They work pretty hard but they get paid better than WMT employees.

The Waltons are scum. They push for more EBT and more illegal aliens plus sell endless Chinese shit.  F**king corprate welfare queens.

That is the word on the net. But this sounds like a simple stealth closure to me.

Called one of the Walmarts (Midland, TX location) just now.  Phone was answered by a woman "Thank you for calling Walmart customer care, may I begin this conversation by requesting your first and last name?"  (WHAT?)  I just said I was calling to check store hours.  She asked if I was calling about a particular location.  I told her the one on Midland Drive.  She said that the store was closed last night at 7pm.  I said "Oh?  For good?" She said "Yes, at first they said it would be for maybe 6 months but after further review they have decided to close indefinitely."  LOL...plumbing problems my you-know-what.  Something fishy is up, whether it has to do with OJH or just Walmart closing stores because they are hurting.  Either way, very deceitful the way they are doing whatever this is they are doing. I don't dare call the other stores from my phone because when the phone first picked up I got the recording of "This call may be monitored or recorded....".

Yeah, sounds fishy.  However, Walmart doesn't necessarily need to pull permits to do plumbing work.  Depends on the local codes.  "Maintenance" work is often done without a permit as long as the person performing the work has a license and works for the company which owns the plumbing.

I heard rumors that this is actually part of a military exercise.

Given the prevailing tendency to surveil everyone, everywhere with advances in electronic security technology and also the lack of plumbers doing any work at these stores, it's entirely possible that a new security/detection system is being installed and tested.  For instance, if someone walks into the public or private rest room with a product, an alert could be sent to  security and they can follow the video back to see if it was paid for at checkout.  If not, grab'm and book'm.  The reason for the total shutdown is that the employees are also a source of loss by theft so to be effective they need to be unaware of any new system.

So if a WM building is used for a holding facility how many can it hold? A few thousand if stacked like sardines. How many guards does that take? Of course the parking lots can be fenced but right now prisons have individual toilets, TV and sinks, beds, music??? So 5 stores X 3000 people / by 350,000,000 = .00004% of the total population. Are you bad guys here at ZH really the ones they are after? Some of you seem to think so. Walmart is quietly closing stores - period!  Walmart does a nice job in a variety of market spaces, but they are no longer a 'leader' in any particular space.  In a less competitive market area they try to crush opposition in one space, and raise prices in another space to cover those losses.  The problem comes when they are in a competitive market with several stores -- and each of those stores 'out-Walmarts Walmart'.  Thus Walmart cannot crush the opposition in one space, because they cannot raise prices in the other spaces to cover it.

Eventually the predatory lion gets old, and becomes the prey.

reasonable assumption, in the drought based climate, that somebody at corporate checked the water usage and they decided to shut down the stores which exceeded standard usage, which may mean there are leaks under the foundation. less reasonable assumption, they are going to raise wages so to keep the labor costs side of the balance sheet in line they have to let some people go. a still reasonable assumption is that the port of entry in LA strike has caused a minor supply chain disruption, and they would rather not have the odious problem of empty shelves. a least reasonable assumption is that since all these stores are somewhat equally spaced, geographically, that the usg is anticipating imposing martial law and these walmarts are going to be back up distrubtion centers for emergency aid. and just because the emergency is never implemented that doesnt mean the threat wasnt real.

Radioactive pipes anyone?

All five Walmarts were built at the same time. Which means that all of the pipes and rebar were probably sourced from the same lowest cost supplier.  It would also fit with why they are closed immediately and are not allowing anyone inside. Walmart isn't going to leave that much inventory unsold on the floor when they could just as easily box it up and redistribute it to other stores.

Unless of course that it's radioactive.

I've long had a suspicion that Wal-mart is having troubles...higher-cost stuff in particular doesn't move and shoppers' baskets are often more-or-less empty.  And they cannot compete with warehouse discount supermarkets on grocery prices.  People are more and more buying past-expiration-date foods, day-old bread, bulk quantities on sale and little else.  Wlmart refuses to have decent sale prices and has a multitude of tricks to make stuff APPEAR to be on sale.  This doesn't exactly attract shoppers...

What Wal-mart is okay for:

name brand packaged foods that are not on sale/promotion at a standard grocery

items not sold at other local grocers

cheap tee shirts...cut is boxy and short, but they aren't see through

That is it. Will not buy meat or produce there.

Generic packaged food and produce are cheaper at Aldi.

Many of the same cheap products are available at Dollar Tree.

Best deals on most other products are to be found online or second hand.

As ar as price, Aldi kicks their ass. Aldi kicked their asses out of germany,  Costco is probably cheaper than WMT or buying other stuff online,

Oh no like 5 stores closed for a little because of plumbing issues! Take the ripple motherfuckers!  Time for some wage increases.  Those increases will lead to unemployment, which will make some successful and others to perish.  How do you think we can get more unskilled employment?  If the workers of today were more skilled, we could have plenty of economic development; unfortunately a lot of people have jack and shit to contribute and physical labor ain't what it used to be worth, and shouldn't.

Yes they need to squeeze their distributors to remain profitable, because they "operate on the thinnest of margins."NOT

Wal-Mart Stores reported fiscal second quarter net income of $4.093 billion, or $1.21 per share. The earnings were deemed respectable by analysts matched the consensus estimate of $1.21 per share. The retailer’s quarterly revenue of $120.125 billion beat the consensus estimate of $119 billion.

The retail giant held on to the top spot on the Fortune 500, edging out Exxon Mobil for the second year in a row. For fiscal year 2014, Wal-Mart’s net sales totaled $473.1 billion, up 1.6% from the year-earlier period.

Three Waltons—Rob, Jim, and Alice (all children of Walmart founder Sam Walton)—own over 50% of outstanding Walmart shares. This fiscal year, Rob, Jim, and Alice (and the various entities that they control) will receive an estimated $3.16 billion in Walmart dividends on those shares.

Weird...our WalMart (that i rarely shop at ...honestly) had a big sign when you walk in listing all the open positions (quite a few).  No one in this area (big college town) likes to work :) or they expect $20/hr to work a cash register.

My guess is they are getting squeezed and these stores aren't profitable..instead of closing them , they are just using a "shitty" excuse to buy some time to figure out what to do...who knows.

I have to admit I had a stereotypical walmart experience that I usually haven't experienced at the ones I went to.

But as the economic fortunes of the area have fallen and being in California, who lets everyone and his uncle from anywhere and everywhere in to get on the dole, the experience was all to real.

They've tried to find places other than china for their stock. Not everything about walmart is bad, but what makes it bad is the corporate model itself that destroys the connection to the people who work for you.

I used to work for a small brewery that refused to sell out to the majors. However the desire to expand to has turned them I to the very thing that they fought against.

Not to mention the people at the top or near the top are all vying for their chance at power. It's in the process makes most peoe that work in that type of structure miserable and unhappy.

But the people who sleep in their parking lots are fucking crazy as we got to see not that long ago.

Still amazed by that video.

Plumbing is PR.  Walmarts stay open during construction and repairs.  Even restrooms and plumbing. There is no way wealthy Walmart will sacrifice revenue for repair-free shopping - for half a year. The closure were preceded by pro union protests at those locations. This is the reason

Pico Rivera protest last November-

Brandon protest last November/December-

Tulsa protest last December-

Texas protests lastDecember-

There were more protests.  I'd look for anther round of retarded "repair closures" in 3-6 months at other locations. Jersey, for example.

@Dignified.  The Food and Commercial Workers Union is a joke.

They are more corporate than the corporations.

NO representation, but full dues for even part-time employees.

Hell, the unions would HELP Walmart provide cover for their crap jobs and crap wages.

Meanwhile, the REAL jobs (at Walmart's American suppliers) are being chopped to "pay" for the raises of the unskilled and uneducated and un-educatable.

The REAL American success rolls on. For the 0.1%.   Our new normal.

I'm not pro union.  I was merely stating that there was pro union protesting at those 5 locations last November and December.  I was simply drawing a conclusion that this was their out based on the fact they hate unions, there was pro union activity there recently, and I worked at a Walmart many moons ago that was open during major construction. Nothing more.

Interesting.  Your link traced 2 billion rounds purchased they could trace.  Simple math shows that is several times the average body weight for all DHS employees. I guestimate .223 nato rounds are about 50 per pound give or take. Maby 40 million pounds plus crating, or rough math gives 20 thousand tons of ammo. For perspective, a midsized aircraft carrier is about 40,000 long tons. It Seems beyond excessive.
