"Surviving Or Thriving" - What Canada's 40% Surge In Meat Prices Means For Ordinary People

Tyler Durden's picture

On the surface, Canada's 1.2% inflation is negligible, and barely enough to keep up with the pace of overall growth as mandated by a few central bank academics. It is below the surface, however, that one finds the scary truth. Because when stripping away the sliding energy prices (which at the recent pace of short covering among oil speculators are about to surge) some scary numbers emerge, such as a 3.8% monthly jump in food prices, primarily as a result of a whopping 30-40% increase in select meat prices in the last 8 months.

How do ordinary people - which excludes those who work in central banks and have taxpayers fund their everyday purchases, which allows them to fully ignore soaring food and rent costs - survive in an environment of soaring food prices?

As the following brief documentary by CBC's The National reveals, food inflation means people have no choice but to eat "far less beef" than they used to, "or chicken." Others are ok with the runaway food inflation: "it doesn't matter to me, I buy the meat at the price it is and that's fine with me" say a gentleman who likely works for a hedge fund and BTFD for a living.

It is not just meat: prices of Canadian fruits and vegetables have also surged, driven almost entirely by the plunge and the loss of purchasing power of the Canadian dollar.

And, as a vendor of meat observes: "there doesn't seem to be an end to it."

So soaring food prices, flat wages, tumbling currency, and a generally deteriorating standard of living. In short: something Japan's prime minister Abe would call a smashing success.

You have to admit.

With constant inflation year after year, they'll eventually get the consumer to spend every last dime of income whether it be on gas, Obamacare, or food.

If you're starving to death, well that's so last century.

I hate to be the bearer of even worse news, but Canada is losing manufacturing jobs in areas such as automotive and automotive component production, steel, building materials, chemicals etc., at a dramatic rate.

Canada and Australia are near sister nations in terms of their dependency on over-inflated housing bubbles, natural resource prices (lumber, oil, mining, etx.), feeder output status to the U.S. and China, respectively, and their social/welfare program structure, and each has among the highest labor costs as well as debt-to-GDP ratios of any nations.

Although you are correct regarding Australia's dependency on a housing market ponzi and resource booms, Australia's debt/gdp ratio, while not great, is relatively low when compared to most nations. Aus debt/gdp~ 28%, USA~ 101%, Euro area~ 90% and Japan~ 227%

Aus has tripled their debt to gdp ratio since 2008 though so they are catching up... yippee.

Hey buddy, I only eat 10000 calories a day, primarily transfats, because my psychiatrist said I have an eating disorder. So it's not my fault I have been absolved of self-control.

I'm also not responsible for my excessive drinking, as I have been diagnosed with "alcoholism". Not my fault.

I'm also not responsible for my excessive use of pain meds/illicit drugs. I suffer from addiction there, can't control that.

I'm also not responsible for my destructive gambling. I have a gambling problem you see, can't control that.

I'm also not responsible for my behaviour toward others, that's just my sociopathy acting up again.

I buy boxes of ground beef from my grocer.  And repackage myself for the freezer.  On sale ground beef in Sept.2014  was (Yankee math)..$2.75/lb.   Last week?  $4.52.   that is not double but close enough to send a family trying to live into fits.

Chicken is the same.  EVERYTHING is shrinking in size and doubling in price.

Last week I purchased ground chuck in bulk from my local butcher at 4.10 per pound. The beef is freshly ground when the order was placed and the beef is not sprayed. As for the chicken, it too is local and bought in bulk and did not exceed 2 dollars per whole chicken. One heck of a good sale. I now only shop sale items and from local farmers in bulk.

For those who are interested in evolving (their worldviews etc), it has been established a long time ago, that if you want to get to a favorable outcome, you're better off to separate the people from the problem.

In this case, it might be a more useful tack to talk about things like... "Demographically aligned representation in Government and Corporate Leadership" (to counter too many of one identifiable group from monopolizing).

As another example, it might be useful to talk about the root evil of modern banking being the Modern Usury that has been established, with things like:  Fiat Currency, FRB, Derivatives, HFT, Compound Interest.

We can still get organic for $5/lb. All grasss fed and a little bit of corn fed just before slaughter. All local, and the farmer welcomes his customers to stop anytime and see exactly what is going on.

He is not in it for the money at $5/lb obviously. He does care very much about what he sells to his customers, and it's not the beef you see standing knee deep in shit in certain cattle yards, no room to move or roam.

Four of us would enter to 'cut' the ones to be shipped. The old man would make his selection then we'd have to direct it towards the gate. Yeah it's always the thyroid, and never the poor eating habits and absence of exercise... That's why with arms, chest and a back that caused some people to confuse me with a knuckle dragging neanderthal on the beach, my T3 & T4 levels tested at about 1/4 of minimum baseline for a normally functioning thyroid...

On the other hand- the prescribed 60mgd of armor thyroid got rid of about 2-3 lbs of fat off the the six pack that I was apparently just too fat and lazy to deal with... even though it was making pants from 20-some odd years ago a bit tight in the waist.

No wonder there's a warning in the directions that thyroid hormones shouldn't be used for weight loss.

If my thyroid levels had been any lower- I wonder which would have happened first- falling into a coma, or exploding into a land whale?

I can see how a shot thyroid could contribute to weight gain, which could then be mitigated with exercise, diet, and/or a simple pill.  If someone is a typical westerner-  I could see additional contributions from interactions with other Big Pharma products that would never be properly tested in combination, or bio-magnification of BigAg products since most of the antibiotics given to livestock are to promote weight gain and ROI, not fend off disease.

Then I had an epiphany - when some human heifer says "I'm fat because because of hypothyroidism" - It raises the question - are they too fat, or too lazy, to GET OFF THEIR ASS AND GET A PRESCRIPTION?

Everyone is different, but based on my experience hypothyroidism is a cop-out.

there's some apocrypha related to John Wayne... people used to ask him how he stayed in shape for his roles, he'd reply he did a lot of two-hand pushes... invariably someone would ask what's a two-hand push... at which point he'd sit down at a table, put two hands against it, then push his chair back...

most people could stand to do a few two-hand pushes, for sure

I have been wondering for some time now if the US subsidies have had an increasing effect on global food health. Ingredient substitution in processed foods and the increased usage of soy and corn, have (i supect) correlated to negative health outcomes. Interestingly these two grains are genetically modified, its no wonder the corporates have control of our health and food costs as a result. When u say refined carbs, does that mean such ingredients as corn syrup?

Nope I think you are wrong.  Americans feed themslees on crap.  Canadians are a few decades back.  We still eat some good shite.  the fatness levels and diabetes are here.  No doubt.  But there is still some semblance of intelligence in the med professionn.   AS In the mediacal professions are NOT bought off yet.

Why oh why is America so obese?  diabetic?  cancer ridden?   Cause there is money in GMO and Glyphosate.   Let's just patent life and kill it all at once.....let's kill all bees.  let's patent food/.  NEXT we go after every source of water.

"If I can't control it then people have no righ tot it"  That means food, water, housing and SOON some idiot will figure a way to patentt air.

Corporations are taking over every single human need.  And Canadians (who sit on huge resources of water,) are now giving permits for Hydro development.  Yeah GE is going up a pristine coastline in British Columbia to develop "alternate hydro"  with control over a huge water source.

Last century power was oil...it has now become water.  And big corps are in on the ground floor.  AND TPP and all the rest are going to deny any challenge to to the rape.

Sun, 04/19/2015 - 18:36 | 6009386 WhackoWarner
WhackoWarner's picture

And I continue to watch large corps apply for "hydro" projects. Get approval and GE has control over a massive water source,  So tell me why GE would spend one corporate minute seeking some "investment" into Hydro/water in the backwoods of Canada?

Forward looking into control of fresh water. GE has a deal for alternate Hydro on one of the most pristine areas in the world.  Tell me this is due to some altruistic notion.  Yeah.  I call it rape.  And we get the TPP ot TTIP or other secret garbage that stips every living human being of any right to say "be accountable"';  that gives away local/sovereign rights....(sarc:  yeah corps are my bestest buddies)

BUT hey it gives Harper and Trudeau #2  board appointments ( after they sell our country out) .  And like lttlle rodents they will run a wee bit faster than the knowledge of what they have done.

I sold out 35 mllion people. Gave away my country.  Lied and lied.  Shat upon the native populations. Made sure Canada sold outI Sold out my country,  workers, I sold out the nature and gave up control, I sold out Canada.  Hey Harper.

But hey ho I got a Board Appt.  to Barrick (like Mulroney).   Stephen Harper nobody wlll give you more than that. You are far too stupid.  All the people who bribed you will shite on your head, They will treat you like Mulroney or less.  Stevie baby you have been played.  And have sold yourself and every Canadian for what?

( what am I talking about... stupid 'r us should be their motto )

the C$ is about to snap back up as oil settles around $75/bbl.

As for food inflation, there is a huge "stupid factor" in Canadian

retailing... why would you buy over priced from California when the same

or better can be had further south down that coast ???

The major "stupid factor" that I see when up in Nova Scotia is that there is no real competition in food retailing. They have two major food retailers (Sobeys and Atlantic Superstore) that I am aware of. Limited competition= higher prices. Heck, even the gasoline prices are fixed up there- the .gov let's them change prices once per week pretty much all on the same day.

Some actual prices from Switzerland (all prices in EURO): a 3-course meal for two - 200, curry sausage and french fries plus coke - 20, a kilo beef - 35, a cleaner per hour - 35, a gardener per hour - 80. A set of ink cartridges for a printer (2.500 pages) - 480. Nevertheless people are so indoctrinated, they still believe the 1-2% inflation rate per annum.

Groceries I can speak to. Switzerland's ag sector is small, inefficient and  heavily protected. On top of that there's basically only two grocery chains (Migros and Co-op), who shamelessly rob shoppers blind.

Petrol is also extremely expensive, so even driving to Germany where groceries are much cheaper isn't an option for most people.
