Monsanto Furious At World Health Organization For Claiming Weedkiller Causes Cancer
Following Monsanto lobbyist comments recently that he's "not stupid" enough to drink the weedkiller that he also proclaimed was safe enough that "you can drink a whole quart of it and it won’t hurt you;" Reuters reports that the maker of the world's most widely used herbicide, Roundup, wants an international health organization to retract a report linking the chief ingredient in the weedkiller to cancer. The company said on Tuesday that a report, issued on Friday by the WHO, was biased: "The WHO has something to explain." However, as one scientist noted, "there are a number of independent, published manuscripts that clearly indicate that glyphosate...can promote cancer and tumor growth."
Monsanto, maker of the world's most widely used herbicide, Roundup, wants an international health organization to retract a report linking the chief ingredient in Roundup to cancer.
The company said on Tuesday that the report, issued on Friday by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), was biased and contradicts regulatory findings that the ingredient, glyphosate, is safe when used as labeled.
A working group of the IARC, based in Lyon, France, said after reviewing scientific literature it was classifying glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans."
"We question the quality of the assessment," Philip Miller, Monsanto vice president of global regulatory affairs, said on Tuesday in an interview. "The WHO has something to explain."
Monsanto officials have asked to meet with WHO and IARC members, and Miller said the company wants a retraction.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimated agricultural use of glyphosate in 2012, the most recent year available, at more than 283 million pounds, up from 110 million pounds in 2002.
Given its massive lobbying efforts, it is no surprise that the United States and other international regulatory bodies have backed the safety of glyphosate when used as directed, but the IARC report cited studies that raised concerns about glyphosate and impacts on health.
Monsanto says such studies are invalid. But critics say they merit attention.
"There are a number of independent, published manuscripts that clearly indicate that glyphosate ... can promote cancer and tumor growth," said Dave Schubert, head of the cellular neurobiology laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. "It should be banned."

What is 'CERTAIN' is that without the use of GMO's, hybrides, insecticides, fortifiers & fertilizers the world would experience lethal cycles of starvation. Many of these products are miracles of science that are much more durable, consume LESS WATER, and produce healthier yields! Critical drug & medical breakthroughs are all rooted in GMO process. GMO development has occured in nature since the earth was created! The entire human race is a huge GMO process in itself!
You exagerate the importance of these products. The mechanization of agriculture had a far bigger influence on yields than any of these products. Mechanization made food production on a large scale possible. Survival of humans always depended on the amount of food they could produce. Back breaking manual labor was replaced by mechincal one that produced so much more food, even before the invention of chemical pesticides.
The products you talk about merely made work and life for farmers easier. But pesticides kill not only pests but also the animals that eat them. And what is certain that without nature in the first place, there would be no food at all. You know, the vary nature that biotech is trying to destroy.
Currently around the world there are developments regarding natural pest control and natural fertilizers that work just as good and don't cause mass kill off of biodiversity.
Don't forget, often what biotech does is they buy producers of certain seeds that produce crops (developed by conventional breeding techniques) that are drought, frost or flood resistant, then add Bt or restistance to glyphosate and then claim to have developed a drought, frost or flood resistant crop. No, the crop was already there. They just added their 'genes' in order to sell moar of their poison pesticide or herbicide.

Remember Seralini's study? The French professor and his team that continued a Monsanto study where Monsanto stopped (after 90 days, the supposedly 'long term' study). They fed the four control groups of rats different diets of GMO corn in combination with glyphosate. Depending on the group all rats eventually developed tumours. A lot of outrage ensued from biotech companies complaining from ethical standards (crying over the fact that he didn't euthanize his rats quickly enough after they developed tumours. Like biotech even cared about animal rights....); about the type of rat they used (prone to develop tumours but it is a rat that is used commonly just for that reason); to too small control groups but in the end Monsanto only analyzed half of their rats; etc.
Anyway, the Seralini study was retracted but only after an ex-Monsanto guy was appointed editor in chief for that particular journal....The reason for retraction was not malice, plagiarism, falsification of data, etc. that are the usual reason for retraction but.....due to.... inconclusiveness. That is NEVER a reason for retracting a study. First of all, it was not inconclusive and even if it was: so what? The whole process of science is that if there are wrong conclusions in a study then another study can counter that.
In the meantime the study was accepted by another journal.
So, perhaps Monsanto and other biotech companies might try to get somebody on the WHO committee in order to retract the WHO statement that glyphosate is carcinogenic.

Yes, big scale agriculture has been the norm for a little while now, monoculture crops often heavily irrigated, fertilized with oil based fertilizers, sprayed with herbicides and insecticides.
Dependence on fewer crops and fewer varieties of those crops paves the way to famine too when the next insect or disease pops up. Genetic diversity is the best insurance plan we have.
Not likely to be sustainable long term. We've passed peak cheap oil, clean water has become more scarce and soils are widely depleted.
Even if GMO and ramped up herbicides are effective it is just kicking the can, and at least in the case of Round Up/Round Up Ready crops it isn't worth it. Weeds have adapted and farmers are having to use other methods including stronger herbicides.

The French Univ of Caen Seralini GMO Corn Toxicity study of Sep 2012 was squashed in the western media but was a bombshell in the rest of the world.
It exposed Monsanto's 3 month Safety Study of GMO corn in 1994 as a complete fraud. The French study examined the toxic effects for the first time of a rat population for it's entire 2 yr lifespan.
The French researchers anticipated charges of junk science would be leveled at them so they duplicated the Monsanto Study including the type of rats and went further by examining the effects of Roundup alone without the GMO corn.
The dramatic rat pictures of massive tumors as big as the rats that started showing up in the 4th month was a bombshell.

I have taken lots of abuse from what appears to be a legion of unemployed environmental activist trolls! Seriously, it is a bit scarey to read how delusional & uneducated so many are about the most important industry in the world! How in the heck do people expected the industry to keep up with the the demands for quantity, price & sustainability (to use a activist spin word)? How about we turn the clock back a few hundred years & watch food costs rise at least 500%? How about we produce 30 or 40% less food than the world needs for a few years? Or how about those that feel truly threatend cultivate, seed, hyrdate, weed, rotate, protect against inclement weather, harvest & store their own food source? I'll hold my breath on the last one!
You raise an important point, but I've talked to farmers in my area and those promises of more grain from less land are proving to be over rated. Most famers here are going back to more natural seeds.
Part of the problem is the diminishing soil. When your only priority is dollars/acre the land pays a price, and fertilizer can only do so much. That is a looming crisis that Monsanto never talks about. So now, there is a groing trend to rotate crops the old fasioned way, partly becase that can reduce pests just by swiching to crops a particular pest cant feed on.
