Radioactive Drone Discovered On Roof Of Japanese PM's Office

Tyler Durden's picture

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe awoke on Wednesday to find a half-meter-wide drone, contaminated with trace levels of radioactive cesium, on the roof of his office in Tokyo. Of course this is nothing new for Washington where a drone crash-landed on The White House lawn in January and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said that Japan is looking to tighten laws governing drones (ahead of next year's G7-summit and the 2020 Olympics). Of course, the police have explained cesium isn't harmful to humans (though we suspect they aren't stupid enough to drink it).

As The Wall Street Journal reports,

A drone was discovered on the roof of the Japanese prime minister’s office building Wednesday, and police said a tiny level of radiation was detected next to it.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police Department said an official from the prime minister’s office found the four-propeller drone, which was about half a meter wide and equipped with what appeared to be a small camera and a plastic container. She declined to comment on the container’s contents.

Later Wednesday, a police official said that trace levels of radioactive cesium were found near the device.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was in Jakarta attending an Africa-Asia summit when the drone was found, and no injuries or damage were reported.

“The police will conduct a thorough investigation, and we will take every possible risk-management measure,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said during a regular news conference. The police official said a special unit has been set up to investigate the incident.

Mr. Suga said the government had begun looking into tightening laws governing drones earlier in the year, as Japan prepares to host next year’s Group of Seven summit and the 2020 Olympic Games.

According to Japan’s transport ministry, no permits or licenses are required to operate drones, which have the same status under aviation law as remote-controlled toy planes. Their operation is unrestricted below an altitude of 250 meters in general airspace and below 150 meters under flight paths.

I'm guessing this is some kind of protest. The drone was probably used to scout around Fukushima.

From the Guardian:
"The chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, said the incident was a wakeup call to the potential dangers of drones, including possible terror attacks when Japan hosts the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo."

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/apr/22/drone-with-radiation-sign-l...

Are you FUCKING KIDDING US? An act of terrorism? How about the TERROR knowing you live beside not one, but multiple open reactors. What a bunch of fucktards. I'll never visit Japan or knowingly buy anything from it.

Most of the comments on the guardian site are all focused on the drone rather than the Fukushima disaster...

All the while the "experts" are still puzzled about the die off of life on the west coast and pacific from sardines to sea lions, what could it be...?

I am not an expert but you can believe I would be considering toxic water from melted reactors in Japan leaking into the ocean for the last 3 years.

Cannabis destroys some tumours. I've seen it first hand on two occasions one a nastily visible cancer, one just some warts.

Seems to work best against aggressively expanding tumours.

Rick Simpson Method seems the best so far.

It's illegal of course, and your pet won't like being heavily stoned twice a day, but if you love them, then you have to try, right?

IF you do try it, make sure you document what you did in order to help others as much as possible.

Strain of cannabis, dose given, howmany times a day, species and weight of animal, type of cancer, duration of treatent and (honest, please) achieved outcome, is the sort of thing that needs to be recorded.

And if any of you DO try it, I'd like to hear your story and collect your data. People in the states where it is legal and cancer treatments are expensive, ought to be doing this in their thousands. Conventional medicine is of limited efficacy against fast growing cancers, cannabis shows a lot of promise. You have to dose your pet quite heavily though and even the most pro cannabis hippy will tell you that large doses can be quite frightening, so it isn't without dangerous side-effects, but it's still kinder than gamma knife, surgery or chemo...

In black magic, it's required to give the target a warning (to allow the spell to take hold) and an escape clause (lest the spell backfire.)

Little events like these very much bring to mind the idea of foreshadowing on a planetary scale. These assclowns who thought they could control the whole world with sorcery are getting some bad hoodoo vibes from the powers they called upon. Black magic doesn't have to be used for evil, but when you defraud the spirit world loan sharks, they can be just as thorough about collecting as the most guillotine-happy mob.

Logic, reason, and science are useful - to a point. It's like obsessing over technicals in the stock market; if you don't understand how the abstraction of stock prices reflect deteriorating economic fundamentals, you'll draw erroneous conclusions by extrapolating from previous behavior instead of taking into account the Urgrund (in this case, the actual economy of services and things.)

Reason, logic, and math are tools in the human intellectual toolbox, but they are no more the summation of existence than the mind is the entirety of human existence excluding the organs and limbs and so on.

Natural Cesium consists of a single stable isotope, Cs 133. 30 other radioactive isotopes are known, filling the range from Cs 114 to Cs 145, with half lives ranging from .57s (Cs 114), through 3x10^6y (Cs 135). Cesium 137 (half-life 30.17y) is an important fission product, and one of the most biologically hazardous components of radioactive waste and nuclear fallout. Cesium 137 is also important as a source of high-energy X-rays in radiotherapy. The 660 KeV X-rays are actually emitted by a two step process, where Cesium 137 decays by beta emission to metastable Ba137, which then emits the X-ray. A few years back, an ampule of Cs 137 from a discarded radiotherapy device was recovered from a garbage dump in Goiana Brazil by local residents. Entranced by the blue-glowing contents, they painted it on their bodies as decoration. Several deaths reportedly occurred.

Yeah.  Someone probably got the bright idea to take their new drone and tour the Tepco facility, before going to spy on the Japanese PM.
I imagine that radioactive isotope was probably also a beta emitter.

Probably not radioactive enough to do serious damage to anyone, at least, not any damage that the scattered radioactive isotopes from Fukushima won't do on a persistent basis.  Who knows though?  Could have been a regime change plot from Krugman: Abenomics just wasn't big enough!  Gotta break the people down so that they accept that Third Arrow.  "When the market gives you lemons, hit the monetary accelerator and power it off a cliff."

Seriously though, I would not be surprised if the high-ranking Japanese politicians have a team of geiger counter wielding goons who sweep for radioactive pockets before the politicians tour somewhere local.

I recall that story. Kids found the discarded xray machine in the dump. Saw the ampule. They were putting it on their tongues....took it home. contaminated everyone. Everyone in the house died, as I recall, and they buried half the town with bulldozers....which were then buried too.

Absolutely incredible...the power contained in the hands of but a few tribe members that control the media. Fukushima was a disaster. I was there post tsunami establishing emergency temp power. Fukushima makes Chernobyl look like a bit of radon in the basement.

Remember. Now go do that voodoo that you do.
