Throw those pathetic Greeks out of Europe already. It´s just a worthless third world country that doesn´t belong to Europe anyway.

That's a bit harsh, Greece is a cornerstone of what it means to be European. It was Greece that stood and kept Asia out for centuries. They developed the idea of self rule. They also were an advanced scientific culture nearly 2,000 years ahead of their time. It was religion and barbarians who shorted out their science. Had it been allowed to continue on as it was, man would have walked on the moon a thousand years ago.

But I will grant you that modern Greece is a cesspit of under-development and entitlement. They had NO BUSINESS being added to the EU. They failed to meet EU standards for debt and for financial position. But Goldman Sachs and corrupt EU officials conspired to add Greece. Germany then lent them billions to buy German products and nevre asked how this was going to be repaid.

I see no hope for Greece. They need to leave the EU, as they never belonged there. Only when Greeks are starving in the streets will they begin to go to work and beging to actually work. Till then, they will seek free money and early retirements.

Um, it was Romans that did them in (and rampant homo-pederasty).  But nice attempt at side-swiping "religion".

my guess from his previous comments is that wolfer is from east germany ... he doesnt seems to have any knowledge of the history or the world, except repeats whatever MSM is telling him ... one of intended consequences of communism.

@ Jack Burton

The role of the ancient Greeks in human history is absolutely overrated. They are just part of an greater process of human development and far from being a "cornerstone" or a "birthplace" of anything. And in regards to the role of todays "Greeks" we are in perfect agreement anyway.

And how many of them joined under the corrupt situation described by your post about Greece?

Germany. That's pretty much it. The rest were dragged in kicking and screamign against their will. From a supposetly "economic union" EU has quickly morphed into a political one where Bruksell tells the countries what they can and cannot do. Poor fux, and here as a European myself, I thought we the Europeans were smart and won't fall for such BS...

Wed, 04/22/2015 - 14:57 | 6019109 Wolferl
Wolferl's picture

The core of the EU is the old Frankish empire of Charles the Great. France, Germany, Benelux Austria and Italy. The rest of Europe is free to join if they want but they have follow the rules. Hint: Those rules have absolutely nothing in common with a Greek lifestyle.

Fri, 04/24/2015 - 03:12 | 6025169 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

that is, frankly, utter bullshit, particularly the "The rest were dragged in kicking and screamign against their will"

a few reminders:

- the founding members of the EU were France, Germany, Italy and the three BeNeLux countries

- accession to the EU meant many, many treaties, and still means that. the EU is a treaty-based organization

- each and every one of those treaties meant a vote in the national Parliaments

so in short, if you want to make the case that the eastern countries were dragged into, then do it. but spare the troglodyte case of putting it as if the western countries were "dragged in kicking and screaming", because it is just that: bullshit

I think Wolferls actual wording is relevant and more insightful than he/she may have intended/understood; "doesn't belong TO Europe anyway."

Even if English is not my native language i choose my wording pretty carefully usually. Yes, it´s "to Europe" and not EU or Eurozone.

Oh yeah, ancient Greece was SUCH a perfect model of the so called "democracy". The ONLY people who could vote were the rich while the women, the slaves and the poor had NO say in the matter. Gee, whataminit, this kinda reminds me of somebody else...lemme think for a minit here, oh yeah, the modern US of A(wimin didn't get voting rights in the supposedly freedom and democratic USA untill the 1930s)! Imagine that!

What a load of hogwash you just posted. Judging the cultures and mores of the past by the standards of today's world is the surest sign of feeblemindedness that I know of. Your history teachers should have taught you better than that.

It was deemed perfectly logical in the past that the electorate should be comprised of only those who had the greatest stake in the governance of the country, ie the wealthy and the actual landowners. Personally, I think that is a pretty good model and one we should seriously consider emulating today, just to get the Free Shit Army out of the electorate so that they can stop voting themselves a stipend and other bennies from the public monies.

Judge a culture by the standards of its own time, not those of your own. Otherwise you force your vision into myopia.

I'll say it because you seem to be out of the loop. There is a reason why the women and the poor have not been allowed to vote in most traditional societies. Women, slaves and poor = uneducated. The slaves and poor for lack of time to dedicate to studies and political analysis. Women, on the other side, because a woman with the desire to partake in and decide of matters of leadership is preposterous and indecent. A woman does not apply strong power without being subjected to extreme stress therefire a woman with political convinctions she wishes to impose on the entirety of her society is inherently defective. See feminists for an example of defective women. You don't like how it sounds? It's no different from saying that leadership in itself is a form of violence, let alone politics as an art, which is worse than warfare. A woman willing to partake in an act of violence worse than warfare clearly has to be deranged, am i not right? They were forbidden to vote, because voting for women was either unnatural or some man's attempt to double his own vote. Finally, thank your universal suffrage for Hillary 2016.

"Fantasy fables" never end indeed. To think there are so many people on ZeroHedge with pure, unadultered liberal notions so deeply radicated in them that they use them as sarcasm against the golden age of the USA (pre-'29). They must be here out of frustration with said liberal ideals not granting them the supreme happiness they desperately want to believe it does...

Jack Burton: "Only when Greeks are starving in the streets will they begin to go to work and beging to actually work. Till then, they will seek free money and early retirements."

A few years ago, we had a couple of kids at a private daycare, that was owned by a really nice Greek-American couple in their 50s. The woman went to Greece 2x/yr for health reasons. While there, she got all her medical and dental work done -- for peanuts, compared to US prices.

Not that I begrudge her or anyone of doing what she did, but the point is... as Jack and many others here have pointed out, Greeks will always look for the ticket on the Gravy Train that is Big Gov. They do this, while making the Tax Evasion an art form, a sport and a point of national pride. For some reason, they refuse to accept that you cannot get more out than you put in.

If 'Corruption' is the culprit, then they need to get off their tanned Tzatsiki & Fetta asses, and end the Corruption. And if the root cause was a Predatory Loan (courtesy of GS and EU-crats), then they need to REPUDIATE said loans, or simply default on them.

They're either part of the Solution, or part of the Problem. There no longer is a middle ground. Pay up, Repudiate, or Default. Enough of the Greek Tragedy cum Comedy!

Sorry, but my sympathy and BS meters have reached their limits.

p.s. I am beginning to suspect Syriza of playing a double-game, a mission within a mission, an agenda within an agenda. They know damn well that Repayment is no longer possible, and that either Debt Repudiation or Defualt are the only options left.

For some reason, they will not reveal this to the Greek public, even they know in their hearts, that this is the case. All they are doing is playing the game of “Pretend & Extend”, to buy time. “But time” for what? Santa Clause? They already have that – only in an Anagram form: Satan Clause.

did you read the book on BIS?  how do you think the Governors of main countries can meet every two months for 2 days for almost a century and none in the mainstream media knows anything about it?

they have a meeting of heads of states and it is a circus, here you have these guys meeting every two months ... and what kind of meeting?

a meeting where they discuss everything and the FED deputy Chairman compared it with the FED meetings where they dont even discuss with each other only read prepared statements ... you dig?

how can the governors go to such meetings ... i dont know about you, but I cant go anyqhere without authorization by my boss ... who is the boss?  how can these meetings go on forever, without interruptions on administration, personalities and so on ... and no coverage at all...

what else is there to know???

So true Capt. Kirk

They do this, while making the Tax Evasion an art form, a sport and a point of national pride.

Every greek i know in the states does this, then they burn down their pizza place, try to collect insurance, and head home to the Agean mist with a big IRS bill behind them, and even that is based on low estimates.

The particular one I am thinking of had their family work in the restaurant and were rumored to lick the ketchup bottles instead of washing them. I never ate there.

They should do what Charles Smith says and go on the "Dollaria"

They have plenty stashed.

The woman who owned the daycare center must have been well off. People who are well off in Greece of today don't deserve pity. But those who are not so fortunate are the ones suffering. The healthcare system is in shambles. At least 1/3 of the people have no health care. The people without means are the ones who were least responsible for the mess and they are the ones paying for it. I share your frustration with the politicians in Greece. I don't know what game they are playing.

Are you kidding? People are starving in the streets. They are dying to work, but with over 50% unemployent among youth and almost 30% unemployment generally you have to be lucky to find a job in Greece and even luckier if the job pays because many of the employed haven't seen wages for months. If you take one segment of the population-- those who are comfortably well-off and don't want to work-- and generalize it across the society you can come to hate any country. Think of all the rotten people in the US and what could be said about us Americans when our economy tanks.
