gentlemen, it is without guile or cynicism that i state the following: the inertia in back of armegeddon is implacable, intractable and incomprehensibly immense. and when placing all things in the balance, it seems to janus that events soon to follow (being inevitable as they are) do not represent a "war" as they will not yield any triumph; all the messiness in front of us is but a battle, the "war" is what's fought for whatever remains in the aftermath of these coming cataclysms -- wherein each and every finally gets the chance to exterminate the 'other' he's been raised to hate. i'm no longer naive enough to believe that mankind will suddenly 'wake up', that some crystallized message of distilled and inescapable Truth will pierce the calcified hearts of man and soften them to at long last love thine neighbor; it is clear to me that the majority prefers the lie, and will happily die in service of it -- to entertain alternative ideas would be unacceptably cynical, and janus is done with that shit.

janus agrees with Jesus -- two thousand years on, it's truer now than it was then; and so it is with this quote that i'll preface the story of janus and the occasion whereupon he was gifted with his first dredel, an occasion the recipient is not soon to forget.
{believe it or not, all of the following is true}
on the evening preceding the receipt of my dredel, janus met and spoke at great length with the former chief counsel to the ADL. and though these events are not interrelated they are nevertheless thematically akin -- just wanted to clear that up before proceeding. concerning our interaction, i'd love to tell you all that janus detected a spark of sinister malevolence deep in the glint of that counselor's eye. what better way to augment this anecdote with drama and tension than with an allusion to all the impressions associated with ZOG, AIPAC, abe foxman and all the rest...yes, for the purposes of narrative, it would be best for janus to suggest that this guy seasoned his matzo with the blood of innocent gentiles; but sincerity compels that i convey the truth of my impressions. in every measure, the guy was/is a gentleman...sorry to disappoint many of you, but facts are facts. i'll go further and say that i found him to be in every way affable, amiable and as well-mannered as any acolyte of emily post. damn it all...i admit it -- i actually liked the guy.
turns out, we're both finishing books -- his book to remind boundary pushers whose potency of thought and deft with language make them more dangerous than atomic weapons (folks like, for example, janus) that there is a responsibility attending the exercise of free-speech, particularly for those especially gifted; and janus's book, written to provoke and remind the powerful from whence their power flows. in the end, we both agreed that morality itself underpins the notion of free-speech, even though it oft manifests itself in immoral ways. i intend to read his book and thoughtfully consider the advice; because, joke though i may, i do take this shit seriously.
{side note: if you're wondering whether or not the most powerful jewish organization in the world retains first-rate lawyers, let me clear all confusion on the matter: even though hebrews aren't terribly prominent in the world of law (i mean, really, who's ever heard of a jewish lawyer?), dude was possessed of an exceptionally gifted mind...almost on par with janus -- the possibility of which made me nervous for a second.}
and on that note, i'm glad that janus and the ADL can finally clear the air and bury the hatchet...it took a long time for them to understand that janus was on the one hand not a threat, and on the other hand i was never gonna genuflect nor kiss any rings; and i admit that it took a while for janus to learn a bit of humility, that some jokes really were in poor taste, and, in all honesty, it's incumbent that i show some measure of respect. i sure have come a long way; and i'm never shy in patting myself on the back -- i'm so goddam humble i make a virtue of vanity.
the next evening, that in which i received the dredel, the onset of dusk brought janus face-to-face with karma. let me begin by saying that karma and i have a terrible relationship; in all my 40 years there's been nothing but the bad side of it. the way those hindus tell it, you'd think it a bank where-from a frequent depositor (like janus) should expect to withdraw good fortune frequently and with interest. for so long i condemned the hindus as frauds and peddlers of deceit...someone had frozen my account at the Grand Karma Savings & Loan and i've been pitching a fit ever since. looks like things are about to change:

okay, the dredel:
before i tell the story of this dredel and how it found its way into my possession, i'll establish a basic philosophical point: ex nihilo. from nothing emerges everything. it is what is meant in the Gospel of St. John the Divine, "in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God, and all that was made was made by Him...". essentially, St. John was saying that God spoke Himself into existence, from the void -- the beginning. that He Is and has been from 'eternity'; He is the source of but is at the same 'time' distinct from all things. that He is One. Zero is the first number in fibonacci, and without it none of the following #s could be...everything from nothing. ex nihilio. this Truth won Socrates a cup of hemlock and cost him temporal life.
after a certain # of sloe gin fizzes, some suitable fare and even more stimulating conversation with the bar's denizens, janus found himself outdoors beneath the stars among company arranged in the shape of a triangle; janus flanked by two friends on either side, forming the other points of our trinity -- me, the bartender buddy and a cute little cocktail waitress. we 3 were smoking, chatting and laughing. can't recall the specific source of that evening's mirth, but i can assure you it was chuckle-worthy.
right at the stroke of midnight, all of a sudden and from nowhere rolls a little wooden dredel that nicks the insole of my left foot, hops in the air and lands with the "nun" side facing up. bending over to pick it up, i marveled over this little miracle. looking around for a suspect, i concluded that a group of wealthy young chinamen had launched it in my direction...well, they to me for some reason looked chinese -- in that i only saw them from a distance as they were walking away. it is my reflexive and default assumption that anonymous dredel rollers with dark hair and semi-swarthy skin are chinese; and though every preceding experience with dredel-tossers has conditioned me to assume as much, it turns out that the culprits were in fact 'middle-eastern'...my bartender buddy was rather adamant in his insistence that my logical deduction as to their far-eastern origins was off by some 90 degrees of longitude.
after some 45 minutes of fierce debate i conceded to the bartender and cocktail waitress that, remote though the possibility may be, there is a chance that the dredel-rollers may well have been jews of mediterranean extraction and not chinese. (fyi, it is very difficult -- and ridiculously tedious -- to dislodge a drunken janus from his drunken declarations)
after which, another debate erupted concerning the dredel's ownership and what rules would constitute its custodianship. it was then decided that, possession being 90% of the law respecting ownership, janus would retain the dredel, but would -- on certain and designated occasions -- deferentially release custody temporarily to the other two.
now it was time to re-enter the bar and start spinning.

and so there it sits in the top drawer of my wife's vanity, strewn in among several other relics from this adventure of a lifetime in beantown...so many adventures, so many curious artifacts, so many incredible stories...the 40 pieces of silver, the copy of lolita autographed by The Police's guitarist, the golden back of a missing diamond ear-ring, and now, at the ending, their company is completed with a little wooden dredel portending nothing.
that's all i ever wanted from the beginning -- to in the end exchange nothing for everything. now that's karma! i reckon Socrates would be mighty proud of lil ole janus -- but for my part, i find hemlock to be a bit acrid...i expect i'll stick with sloe gin fizzes.

i'll do my best to respond, as i'm glad you brought this up. it should first be understood that i do my dead-level best to avoid the temptation to at any time take sides. you see, we jesters sit safely at the left hand of The King; and that's a safe place to be -- our churlish and detached ambivalence amuses His Majesty. and with respect to jesters, they do one thing very well; and the thoughtful among us do it with intrepid intent. story-tellers must amuse and at the same time edify; and with stealth, sacrifice and patience some have been known to inherit the scepter...it's a story as olde as time.
i would never deny the palestinian's claim to injustice; nor do i think there's a plausible case against persia...and even if their intent were to build a bomb, it's difficult to fault them with 500 of the same tipped at the end of highly sophisticated delivery vehicles sitting in silos under diamona. i would also at the same time admit that 'israel' is a dream shared by everyone from the high-priests in tel-aviv to hard-core occidentialists in zurich (hitler, like hertzel, wanted a homeland and virtuous society for the jews). and then when considering europe and its domiciled population of muslims, consider how reasonable it will soon sound in the continent that europe is for europeans -- especially in light of europeans' recent acknowledgement that the world isn't their colony, that africa is for africans, etc., etc. -- and imagine the potency of that message in the context of resource, job & other scarcities (soon to come to a continent near you). and within that admixture toss in a few more 'terrorist' incidents, rioting in europe's ghettos, increasing chaos in the middle east, russia, china, the punjab, a helter-skelter north amorica fractured along every imaginable fissure...and, my friend, all i see is a world careening inexorably to ww3.

here is another way of looking at things: divide and conquer has been the strategy of the powers that rule this world, why not use it against them? turn about is, after all, fair play. and again, they have lived by this sword of division, and now they shall fall by it. when you adhere passionately to one side or another of any of these fabricated dialectics you end up serving their ends and ultimately losing.
