Hundreds Dead After Devastating Nepal Earthquake Topples Structures, Starts Avalanches

Tyler Durden's picture

A little over four years after the devastating Japanese earthquake led to a tsunami that triggered the biggest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, overnight Asia was once again the epicenter of a massive, 7.9 magnitude earthquake, this time not on the Pacific Rim but deep in the Himalayan mountain range, striking the small country of Nepal and sending tremors deep in Northern India, resulting in at least 449 deaths, countless injured, toppling a 19th-century tower in the capital Kathmandu and triggering avalanches on Mount Everest.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, initially measured at 7.7 but upgraded to 7.9 magnitude, struck 80 km (50 miles) east of Pokhara. It was only 2 km deep.

According to Reuters, this was the worst quake to hit the impoverished Himalayan nation in 81 years. The tremor was so strong it caused damage in neighboring Indian states and Bangladesh. The quake was shallow, intensifying the amount of energy released over a relatively small area.

Reuters further reports that the death toll had reached 449 in Nepal according to an initial police estimate, most from the Kathmandu Valley. There was little information coming from the outlying areas of the mountainous country and helicopters were circling overheard to get a better sense of the damage.

"Hundreds of people are feared dead and there are reports of widespread damage to property. The devastation is not confined to some areas of Nepal. Almost the entire country has been hit," said Krishna Prasad Dhakal, deputy chief of mission at Nepal’s Embassy in New Delhi.

The following photos from the scene of the incident confirm the extent of the devastation.

Here is the first video from the capital Kathmandu:

As the oingoing reports from the scene of the quake trickle in, it is almost certain that the final death toll will be far greater, although it will hopefully not surpass the devastating 1934 M8.3 quake that struck Nepal and killed over 8,500.

"Hundreds of people are feared dead and there are reports of widespread damage to property. The devastation is not confined to some areas of Nepal. Almost the entire country has been hit," said Krishna Prasad Dhakal, deputy chief of mission at Nepal’s Embassy in New Delhi.

"We are totally cut off from most parts of our country," said Ram Narayan Pandey of the Nepal Disaster Management Authority, who was coordinating relief efforts from Kathmandu.

The death toll in northern India rose to at least 12, with six killed in house collapses in Uttar Pradesh and six more dying in Bihar further east, according to government officials.

Striking in immediate proximity to Mount Everest, the earthquake led to at least one major avalanche in its aftermath. It was unknown as of this moment if any climbers were caught in its wake.

The quake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, according to climbers there, raising fears for those on the world's highest peak a year after a massive snowslide caused the deadliest incident on the world's highest mountain.

Romanian climber Alex Gavan said on Twitter that there had been a "huge avalanche" and "many, many" people were up on the mountain. "Running for life from my tent," Gavan said. "Everest base camp huge earthquake then huge avalanche."

Another climber, Daniel Mazur, said Everest base camp had been "severely damaged" and his team was trapped. Please pray for everyone," he said on his Twitter page.

An avalanche in April 2014 just above the base camp on Mount Everest killed 16 Nepali guides. April is one of the most popular times to climb Everest before rain and clouds cloak the mountain at the end of next month.

The quake was so powerful, tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi and other northern cities in India, with reports that they had lasted up to a minute. "Massive tremors have been felt here in Delhi and several other parts of India," said a newsreader on NDTV in Delhi.

"You can see pictures of our Delhi studios, where the windows rattled and everything shook for a very long time, for a minute perhaps or longer," she said as footage showed studio ceiling camera lights shaking.

"We are in the process of finding more information and are working to reach out to those affected, both at home and in Nepal," tweeted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He convened a high-level meeting with ministers and top officials to assess the situation. There were no preliminary reports of damage anywhere in India, Home Minister Rajnath Singh told the Press Trust of India.

The massive quake concludes a period of relative seismic stability in the Asian region over the past 4 years. One hopes that this isn't a harbinger of many more earthquakes to come, and certainly none targeting already suffering Japan, because the last things its foundering economy, already on the Keynesian precipice, needs is an act of nature to seal its fate.

So why not throw in the disaster in Nepal as man made by evil people (take your pick)?

The Himalaya chain of mountains is still growing, by about 4mm a year (the Indian Plate is moving north at about 67mm per year), so seismic events are not unexpected, though not usually on this scale.

They do get quite a few, though....and ones like this every 75 years or so....pretty normal, hence it is a risky area.

Kokopo New Guniea had a 7.5 end of March....they get many more big ones than the Himalaya, and the relative plate movement is nearly 2x what it is in the Himalaya (plates converging at over 100mm/year).  Doesn't make the news, but living there must be a real rock-and-roll experience.

Would anyone like to speculate on God's love?

POEM ON THE LISBON DISASTER

Oh, miserable mortals! Oh wretched earth!
Oh, dreadful assembly of all mankind!
Eternal sermon of useless sufferings!
Deluded philosophers who cry, "All is well,"
Hasten, contemplate these frightful ruins,
This wreck, these shreds, these wretched ashes of the dead;
These women and children heaped on one another,
These scattered members under broken marble;
One-hundred thousand unfortunates devoured by the earth,5
Who, bleeding, lacerated, and still alive,
Buried under their roofs without aid in their anguish,
End their sad days!
In answer to the half-formed cries of their dying voices,
At the frightful sight of their smoking ashes,
Will you say: "This is the result of eternal laws
Directing the acts of a free and good God!"
Will you say, in seeing this mass of victims:
"God is revenged, their death is the price for their crimes?"
What crime, what error did these children,
Crushed and bloody on their mothers' breasts, commit?
Did Lisbon, which is no more, have more vices
Than London and Paris immersed in their pleasures?
Lisbon is destroyed, and they dance in Paris!

any chance you would change your programming on god? for starters, how about challenging god *nicely* to prove his existance to you. secondly, how about (allowing for the view) viewing that god is limited because we are flawed, or, independent and under multiple influences.

So, how do you let god prove his presence? a few ways, I suppose, but here is one. Pencil and paper, write a number between 11 and 59 (just to make it easy on him(her?)). and then pick another number 1-9. Then pick another number from 1 to 9. Writing it down is just so YOU dont forget. The 2 additional single numbers are just so he can have fun doing tricks. Now remember, say to him, look how about these be OUR numbers, and you, being outside of time, can arrange things, and guide my eyes in key moments, and I promise to not be fucking oblivious to what I see around me, to not waste your efforts to say "HI".

Best to you. All I can say, is CLEARLY, god is happy to have fun playing with his powers (unless you really are a shit and should at least try to straighten up during this -prove yourself- challenge.)

In addition, men now have powers over earthquakes and weather, so it is REALLY unfair to attribute shit to him during this era. Better challenge would be this.....WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR POWERS? Are you a plus to those around you? What is stopping you? DNA? I dont think so.

Bob Seger's sentiments aside, I've seen enough dumps and squalid places all over the planet, to cure me of whatever "mystical" value they purport to have.  A hike to any mountaintop that provides a nice view, will do.  Thank you very much.

Nice and cool as it might be, you don't need to zip around the ISS or the Enterprise either, to take in the beauty and awe of Nature -- both from the microscopically small, to the cosmically large.  I suggest that you enjoy the View while you can, before you shuffle off this 'mortal coil', and seek to "make a difference", i.e. to either leave it alone or try to make it a better place than you found it.

And by "better place", I don't mean that you impose your worldview or brand of theology on others, but merely act as a decent human being and seek to "Add value" to the lives you touch.

imagine if you will, there you are, got essential powers, however that happened, and then got a planet of folks with constraints and freedoms, which allows for probably the most interesting possibilities, and you cant get a break from those who claim to know you, and they go around saying whatever, over and over, limiting their neighbors view of the actual realities. Its the assumption of distance that is really a key hurdle. Feel your breath.

"GOLD MINE: HILLARY CLINTON’S BROTHER GRANTED SUPER-RARE MINING PERMIT FROM HAITI AFTER STATE DEPT. SENT COUNTRY BILLIONS"

VCS’s coveted gold mining exploitation permit was apparently such a sweetheart deal that it outraged the Haitian senate, since royalties to be paid to the Haitian government were only 2.5%, a sum mining experts say is at least half the standard rate. Moreover, the mining project in Morne Bossa came with a generous ability to renew the project for up to 25 years. Nevertheless, the fledgling company proudly touted its luck in landing the deal.

“This is one of two permits issued today, the first permit of their kind issued in over five decades,” reads the only press release under VCS’s “news” tab on its scant website.

When I was a young kid in Japan in '69 we had an earthquake. That is some scary shit! The ground isn't supposed to move. Broke all the windows and threw everything of the walls. My older brother screaming naked running from the bathroom was hilarious though. No structural damage to the house but, the road had a large gap in it. Maybe the Chinese want Nepal after taking over Tibet and used the tech expertise given by Pres. Clinton to them for campaign donations like he did the missile guidance tech for ballistic missiles. Seems like every news agency forgot about the Chinese connection to the Clinton clan.

A 7.9 on land near a populated area is really shocking - the energy yield is equivalent to 10-15 megatons of TNT. At first I thought it might be the biggest one of its kind recently, but research shows that there was another within my lifetime: 2008 Sichuan, China, 7.9 magnitude. +87k fatalities. I am not looking forward to more news from Nepal, since they can only be of a dire nature.

Britain and Nepal have close ties through the Gurkha regiments in the British army - even though the government had treated them like shit until a public campaign to address this deplorable state of affairs in 2006 - so I expect we'll be sending token help to Nepal if we can tear ourselves from training terrorists in the ME and nazis in Ukraine.

Deep condolences to the people of Nepal and prayers of hope for their future go with this post.

Well, there is a giant tectonic plate under India that extends to Australia. And this plate is moving northward very quickly, diving under the Tibetan Plateau. This is creating the Himalaya Mountains, and also these earthquakes.

This latest quake shook Mt Everest, and was felt strongly in Delhi, India. RT is giving the best reporting I have found. They say that at least 1130 have perished. I'm surprised the numbers are not higher. It's very sad. I get the impression that India has the most influence and interest in Nepal, which I'm guessing is sort of on the "India side," while Tibet is on the "China side" of the Himalayas. India is sending aid of some sort, it appears.

I'm surprised there aren't more and even stonger quakes there. The Himalays are being thown up by Indian Subcontinent crashing northward into Asia. Each quake is earth being heaved upwards. I would have thought the place would have these quakes every few months, but I guess the earth moves very slow on our human time scale.

There is an entertaining book, titled "City of Glass", about LA and all of its natural disasters (including earthquakes).  One of the best quotes in the book is simply "you don't get topography for nothing".

It really sums it up.  We are attracted to dramatic scenery, but nature doesn't leave things dramatic & vertical for very long....erosion takes its toll.  Beautiful scenery is often due to extreme natural forces at work, and the Himalaya are one of the foremost examples.

Oh dear, out come the messiahs and [fill in doctrinaire handbook] thumpers.

Fact is Nepal is a failed state, always was.  Fourth world.  It's GDP is based on outside aid.  There are about 12 city blocks of walkable pavement in Kathmandu, centered at the royal palace; the rest of the city is potholes and carved-out pathways between buildings.  It's a remarkable place, mind-blowing and yet failed by western standards.  I can tell you their .gov is completely unable to deal with this; Nepal will need international help and I hope the US has the decency to move on it.  China will.
